To pick this argument back up, I rewatched the first episode of Bocchi the Rock (the reviews were only of this episode), and I stand by what I wrote previously: Even just with this one episode as a point of reference, Rebecca Silverman's point is invalid.
As UnrelatedString informed me, it seems to be the word 陰キャ that is translated as introvert (I tried to listen for it, and mostly confirmed each case). However, the term social anxiety also comes up two times in the translation. I believe I heard the term コミュ障 in these sentences.
Importantly, according to the translation, Hitori never refers to herself solely as an introvert, nor does she blame her introversion for her problems (as Silverman claims). We get this line: "The internet is filled with socially anxious introverts just like me!"
There is nothing wrong with this sentence. Hitori is an introvert and she is socially anxious. Anyone nitpicking this is wrong.
1. Hitori Gotoh absolutely has social anxiety. This line: "Not the flashbacks! Begone! Begone, filthy memories!" This is definitely a social anxiety thing, not an introvert thing.
2. Silverman is absolutely wrong when she writes this: "And while she does show signs of introversion – her comment at the end about being exhausted from too much socializing shows that – most of her issues seem to stem from anxiety instead." Getting tired from socializing is ABSOLUTELY an introvert thing. So while she's right that Hitori's problem is social anxiety, she's using incorrect reasoning.
As far as 1, Rebecca Silverman would not disagree with me. Though I could add many more examples of showing Hitori Gotoh has social anxiety.
Now, there's another line from Hitori: "A life as the archetypal introvert just seems to fit me best."
She is not calling herself an introvert here, but rather saying she would do best under the archetypal introvert lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with this. It is not conflation of the terms. In fact, most of the time Hitori uses the term introvert, it is to describe others around her.
"Yeah. A band is a place where even introverts can shine." This is a different character calling himself an introvert.
"but they're all indoorsy, shy introverts!"
"The internet is filled with socially anxious introverts just like me!"
There's nothing odd about someone with social anxiety trying to find comradery with introverts. So, yeah, I'm going to have to strongly disagree with what Silverman said.
