Since I was talking about Komi Can't Communicate a few weeks ago, I was looking up the definition of communication disorder, starting with Wikipedia. If I'm understanding this right, it actually seems like this particular term might not include social anxiety disorder or selective mutism. And the book summaries for Komi always mention social anxiety. There's different contexts for words, so I'm not 100% sure it's wrong to say Komi has a communication disorder, but I'm kind of suspicious.

It seems a communication disorder usually refers to someone who has trouble with comprehending and applying language. Whereas someone with an anxiety disorder like SAD understands social cues, knows what they should say in reply, but can't due to anxiety. I guess that's the difference. And it seems to me Komi's inability to speak isn't due to her not knowing what to say or from not understanding what's said to her. This psychology stuff is a bit out of my ken, of course, but it is interesting.

@ShayminGratitude SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) isn't an anxiety disorder.

I was using it as an acronym for social anxiety disorder.

I don't think Komi Can't Communicate is offensive, but I do think i lacks appeal for those who actually suffered from SAD. It has a slight paragon problem, since Komi is hand-waved away as the most popular person in school, which isn't a real problem we face. And "I want 100 friends" is just an extremely arbitrary goal to me, especially since I've found friends pretty annoying. I don't know though, it could be other socially anxious people really like Komi. I still think Watamote is better.

@ShayminGratitude Communication disorders, like blindness, deafness and aphasia, are disorders which are primarily about communication. Other things can impair communication but as a secondary issue.

@Peilonrayz Yeah. I've got selective mutism though, so I don't think by definition that's a communication disorder. If I go to the wikipedia page for selective mutism it actually says this disqualifies a diagnosis: "The disturbance is not better accounted for by a communication disorder." And so, I think I said I had a communication disorder or something when I was talking about Komi last time, so I was just trying to point all this out for the sake of accuracy.

@ᴅᴀɴɪᴇʟッ no, spam has a proper definition as content that exists to promote a product or service without disclosing affiliation, and will deduct 100 reputation from the user and possibly block their IP if the issue persists enough

if it's not a proper answer, flag it as NAA. if it's poorly research or just not great quality you can flag it as VLQ or if it's fine by site standards but just a pretty unnecessary or useless answer, that's what downvotes are for

what's the specific answer? I can only say so much for general policies (especially on a site I don't participate in) but I can probably evaluate a specific case much better
