that was diablo 2/3 forums, terraria and something else for a very short time, I forget what game it was
oh it was a site, not a game
coincidentally it basically died a few months after I left it :p
I checked it out a few motnhs ago and it turned out they had a management change and they killed the old design, old forum structure and turned it from a community site into a news blog site
aka kotaku but shittier and without any good sponsorships/ad campaigns
all the people I knew from there also immediately left coz what were they gonna do − post comments under non-user posted articles?
the whole thing was about users posting their own articles, like it was a crowdsourced gaming journal
eh, I never liked that community anyway
there was a competitive factor built into the base of it which makes people hostile to each other, especially since it was targeted at middle-high schoolers to first year college students
I was posting some of my original game mechanic and sprite ideas on terraria forums for a while but then I realized it's never gonna get implemented by the devs and I could only hope to do something like that in my own similar game
and that's when I dropped all that shit and started making my own terraria clone
still have some paper notes with mechanics ideas and sketches not digitized
I've since made my base game 3 times over and halted coding to actually develop the world, mechanics and characters properly in text and sketch format
there's also art, sounds, music and proper storytelling to think about
then there's also level design, procedural generation and editing tools for all that
like a fucking ton of work to do before it's final
idk if I'm ever gonna finish it but I'm gonna start from basics and move my way up into more detailed implementations over the years
I know I can't stop thinking about it coz I always get new interesting ideas to write down
it's not something I'm doing like my primary job, I don't think I could do that and not start hating it, so it's a weird thing that I do
before doing any more coding than I've already done through the years I wanna write more stories, glue together separate arcs and figure out how all the characters tie in together
there's lots of games with the shittiest most basic graphics, sound and gui, and they somehow succeeded because of the one thing they did right
