basically every major company that wants to sell you stuff (e.g. netflix, amazon) has tried to come up with a working recommendation engine.

netflix alone employs several mathematicians to try to improve their algorithm

as well as quite a few programmers of course

in any case, easily hundreds of thousands of hours have been put into optimizing that algorithm, and it's still not that useful

I haven't seen that "notes" feature anywhere so it's as good as absent without any markers of its existence
