The SO election already has 3 users with maxed out candidate scores (one being @MadaraUchiha), which was my biggest fear about them switching to this new system. Without being able to compare meta scores or helpful flag records in addition to that, I'm not sure how we're expected to decide between the (only slightly different) nomination posts. If more maxed-out users join in, it may just turn into a popularity contest.

Every once in a while, I see a question on SO I could answer theoretically better than the existing answers (for example, for stackoverflow.com/questions/29168283/…, there are some number-theoretic improvements that can be made e.g. via a FFT or by Wilson's theorem). But in practice, the algorithms there will work (albeit slowly) so I don't bother because most people just don't care.

@LoganM read their nominations. Read their answers to questions on meta. Look through their actual activity on the site...

True enough, and I agree candidate score is a better thing for people to blindly vote on than rep alone.

The problem with "helpful flags" is that it was both ridiculously easy to game (when the numbers were close, that is - no one was gonna beat bluefeet easily) and essentially meaningless for small numbers; great for identifying folks who'd never flagged or who flagged a lot, but otherwise...

There was a bigger issue as well, though: folks like me have pitiful numbers of helpful flags. Tons of close votes, reopen votes, delete votes, undelete votes... But not a lot of flags.

It's probably easy to game on SO. I don't know since I'm not active there. But on the sites I'm active, it's actually somewhat difficult to get flags, and at least is an indicator of how often the users are online, if nothing else.

This came up with one candidate in the last SO election, who was getting trashed in the comments for his low # of flags. He had logged thousands and thousands of moderation activities on the site over the years, but mostly just used the privileges he earned instead of tossing shit over the fence to mods.

It'd be like a baseball card with only RBI on it. Not exactly useful.

If you don't flag things, that's a couple of points you can't ever have on the new score - but there's plenty of room to make it up.
