Q: Can you manipulate someone with the death note, so that his person writes its own name in the death note?

user6399If i would write: John Zeürtö kills himself by writing his name in the death note? (In this example, John also owns a death note)

@ɹǝzɐɹʞ That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: maids

There are currently 3 maids in the Maid Café chat room: Me, Ruri and Taisho. I can search for things and play hangman in my room, Ruri can also play some games with you, and Taisho just posts pretty pictures.

A: Improve question quality by informing users of reverse image search sites

Shog9We could add this to the sidebar help on /questions/ask, but first let's try something a bit more direct: This will appear any time someone uses the identification-request tag. It won't stop them from posting the question, but it should catch their attention - and it provides a direct link to ...

^hopefully this will lower the rate of trivial image ID requests

A: How can I identify an anime using Reverse Image Search?

almousawiUsing Chrome for desktop Let's say you saw this image online and you want to identify the anime it's from. To do this, you'll have to: Right-click on the image. Click "Search Google for this image". and here it is: Using another desktop browser NOTE: If you are using Firefox,...

That first method is not a vanilla Chrome thing, as far as I can tell.
I definitely do not have that option on right-click.
I'm not using chrome at the moment, but when I was it was definitely there
Oddly, does show up in the Chrome help docs. But I wonder how many people don't have it, like me.
(Using Chrome 36, btw.)
It is showing up in the mobile version, at least.
What happens if you right click and press s?
save probably
19:57
Yup.
It should search
At least, it does for me right now
Actually, my mistake. Nothing happens.
there's an extension for firefox
numerous even that add image search to right-click menu
There's a chrome extension too, but I'm not sure why since it's already supposed to be there
it must have been an extension that was included by default and now it's not
firefox disabled 3D DOM view in alpha builds
what gives
20:00
Don't think so. The extension version has an icon next to the "Search Google for this Image"
maybe it's for non-chrome browsers
What is are you on
OS*
Me?
Windows 8.1.
20:03
Hmm, I have win7 and it works
I can check my Win7 computer later.
(shrugs)
If you open a private window does it still not work?
20:03
@LoganM Correct.
I'm wondering if it's a group policy enforced by work. But at the same time I doubt that.
I don't think it's related to anything in the settings.
@ToshinouKyouko that was fast some shog9 already checked your thread ;) he is the responsible on making that happen
@Eric make it a community question and update it to fit generically to most of our ID types and make the question a summary?
@Prix Make what a community question?
Why it's not showing up?
Hmm, no image in quite a while I see
I don't think 50 messages has passed

Q: Cartoon with girl on a wheelchair and a genie as helper against an evil entity

AvitusI remember watching a cartoon as a child, in the 80s or early 90s and I can't remember the title (or a lot of details about it). The setting reminds me of "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water": we could be at the end of the 19th century, but my memory does not support me much in this. Anyways, the ...

oh he implemented that
Seems to take somewhat longer than 2 minutes in reality, but it works at least.
While we're on the topic, is there any way to see chat timestamps including seconds? Clearly they store at least that because it can tell you that a message was e.g. "32 seconds ago". But AFAICT there's no easy way to see more precisely than minutes.
it stores up to seconds
20:27
Where can you see that?
from the socket if you're running chrome you can view it on the developers tab
"time_stamp":1408393673
Is there anywhere you can see it which is accessible directly from chat?

Q: Why Ryuk didn't dropped his own death note?

WebSocket is a protocol providing full-duplex communications channels over a single TCP connection. The WebSocket protocol was standardized by the IETF as RFC 6455 in 2011, and the WebSocket API in Web IDL is being standardized by the W3C. WebSocket is designed to be implemented in web browsers and web servers, but it can be used by any client or server application. The WebSocket Protocol is an independent TCP-based protocol. Its only relationship to HTTP is that its handshake is interpreted by HTTP servers as an Upgrade request. The WebSocket protocol makes possible more interaction between a...
I understand all the words there with at most 2 letters. Above that comprehension drops fairly drastically.
@LoganM gonna have to make an extension for that
@LoganM it's a very sophisticated internety thing, don't bother, I can't understand it too
same
each chat message could be injected with its precise timestamp and be visible on hover, along with flag/star/reply buttons and the dotted border
I'd really be fine if it was only visible in the history
20:34
it's really simple, you just gotta google how to make extensions and how to inject more code into code

Q: Why did they change the lightning cutter's name to Chidori?

QuikstrykeInitially they referred to Kakashi's move as lighting cutter (Raikiri), but then they stopped calling it that and called it Chidori from then on. Any specific reason for this? Seems really odd to change a moves name after establishing it as something else.

you just need to view the debug output to see the full message

Q: Is Zellogi story got cut?

Ankit SharmaIn Death Note, Zellogi made joke on Ryuk and told to other Shinigami that he will check on Ryuk but it never happened. Does his story got cut or it was deliberately left this way?

So even without privileges deleted messages are visible if you use this?
Or just their timestamps?
post a message and delete it
wow that pinged me
I edited it after it was deleted

So you can see the timestamp and edit count but not the content

How do I interpret the 1408394281?
I guess it's something like the number of seconds since Jan 1st, 1970
I have no idea, but it's probably something like that
@user1306322 @LoganM epochconverter.com
If I assume that's what it is, it gives the right answer
@user1306322 :P taking hours to get things done he goes in and get the 2 features out in less than an hour
20:49
das da pro at work
not to mention the vndb you had to use a tcp socket to get data from it -_-
I also helped! by… not interrupting!
@user1306322 and we got that improvement thread taken care of
trying to get a good timing for the star thing
wish it had more up votes ;/
lol me too
wonder what's up with that
seems to me more useful than mal onebox, but the scores say otherwise
yeah
hopefully Crave will reply to my email with who we need to talk to and we can get that sorted and include MAL
20:54
or you could just… you know… do it anyway
I wanted to but their API isn't even working
if you copypaste something from a MAL page, it inserts "Read more at MAL via this link <link>" which is already included
I mean their documentation doesn't reflect the API
oh right
if you mean you need some tech guys over at MAL to code something, I wouldn't hope much for that
that only comes if you use a browser
if I were to scrap it for instance that would not come out as it seems to be some javascript interacting on copy
but if I need proxy for that then that did be a no no
20:59
@user1306322 So how do I access this?
crhome
right click page
inspect element
network tab
refresh the chat page
in firefox, you gotta press ctrl+shift+i to open up inspector and I remembered you have IE…
check websocket
that image is from FF?
21:04
I'm trying on chrome right now. How do I check websocket?
in either firefox or chrome find a "network" tab in developer's tools menu and refresh chat page
Yes did that
@LoganM Click Network, and to filter the traffic shown by the Dev Tools, click WebSockets (all the way on the bottom)
not sure what to look for on that page
click some treeview branches to see events
the request should be POST "events"
returning json
check out its response
it should be a treeview of json objects
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ I don't have those tabs at the bottom
that's a old chrome ver. click the filter icon to bring up the tabs
Okay I think I got it
Now have to figure out how to do it in IE
@LoganM what version?
9 has no support for it
21:13
11
@LoganM use F12 to bring up the Developer Tools
What you want might be under Network
you'll probably have to tell it to start listening before things will show up (hit the play button)
@user1306322 mmmm my firefox doesnt show websockets
I'm using Aurora which is alpha build
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ @MadaraUchiha @LoganM @user1306322 would it be possible to change the subject of the question meta.anime.stackexchange.com/questions/793/… to something more generic that can fit the proposed improvement at meta.anime.stackexchange.com/questions/1083/… ?
y u ask me tho
21:28
So basically instead of just say "for image reverse search" more towards of question related to ID and at the question
we have a summary and the answers as how to do things
or something like that
@user1306322 opinion? pov?
no idea, these things you should ask the other guys
I think the important names are pinged above
the update is already working
well, I meant them, yes
I think the most important thing is that people at least try some reverse image search.
what I mean is that we could improve that question as maybe a community question that would cover how to reverse search for an image along with how to post a question for identification request
which would pretty much entail our guideline for ID
9
A: What criteria should we use for QCing for ALL "identification-request" questions?

ɹǝzɐɹʞTaking cues from sites like TV & Movies.SE, Sci-Fi.SE, and Arqade, I've come up with the following guidelines: An identification-request should have as many of the following points as possible: Any description of the leading/recurring character(s) (i.e. physical description, behavior,...

21:31
I don't think the guidelines work very well in the case of image ID requests
That warning message does not open just for image ID
I'd rather it just stay like this
The problem it's trying to correct isn't overall quality concerns with ID requests. It's people giving us ones which are too easy. They're pretty orthogonal.
I was thinking we could perhaps improve it a bit so it would prevent questions like:
-1
Q: Anime with a girl who has blonde hair and a red headband who says "I won't let you sleep tonight"

jordyn holdenI saw this picture once, of a girl with blonde hair and a red hairband/headband. She also had blue eyes. She had a school uniform on, I believe it was pink. She was saying "I won't let you sleep tonight." And she had her hand on her chin. She was talking to a taller girl with purple or blue/black...

since its a tag-wise warning
That seems like a different problem, and once that we're already equipped to solve
I see both as connected issues, if some one is about to post a poor question but sees a warning where it says hey "you can post it like this, this and this" which will make your question more likely to get an answer or you could check this this and that to make sure nothing war found
we would avoid having poor quality ID and image ID or at least to some extent as there are always those who don't read it
21:39
21:50
@Prix like what? "How do I use Reverse Image Search to find where a particular image came from?"
What should I know before posting a Identification Request question?
or something along those lines?
@Prix then we should me a a new meta for this
and link to the guidelines and reverse image search tutorial
why not just make that one a community wiki or something and update it with the informative points one should know about it?
@Prix we can do a general faq of how to use anime.se
we just need to outline what we need
I'll start a planning meta if we can figure out what items we want to include
well either way my point is that perhaps we could "group together" the essential information people posting ID questions need to know
21:54
IMO it's a separate issue. This is a case of people not doing research because they aren't aware of how to do it. Low quality/undescriptive ID requests are more a problem with text-only requests.
which would essentially show up on that warning link
now are we doing a general faq for identification requests?
this is just me thinking to myself not sure if it would look good
but the question would keep a list of the answer with their title as simplified as possible
for example
it's not a bad idea per say since most ppl don't read the help center
In any case, before getting rid of the current working version in favor of something overly generic, IMO we should at least test to see if this accomplishes its intended goals firlst.
21:57
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ Yes, exactly and the warning shows up generally for the and is already in place
@Prix what would you say are the intended goals?
It isn't a warning so much as a notice.
I think at the very basic we want people to know that:
1) they need a minium amount of information provided and certain tidbits in a format
2) they can do some basic reverse image search before posting
Why can't we just continue to moderate #1 with comments?
This is my personal opinion, I think that every time a new user comes here to post a ID question and gets shut down because of the information provide
21:59
The problem is with #2. The questions aren't off-topic or disallowed in any way, but they also mostly could be answered without posting.
that in most cases make that user not want to come back or just throw away that site
if we have a simple yet complete warning that can fill him up of the basic he should know
@LoganM I think we should only do to to reinforce things that have already been interated to them
he might post a more consistent answer and actually come back or stay within our network and become a potential user
I don't think we need to tell people everything about ID requests before they even post one.
unfortunately I feel that 80% of id-reqs are throwaways
22:00
we aren't telling them everything we are telling them the essential needed to for it
even if they're answered
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ and I think we could work that out
In any case I like the current version, which is about teaching people how to do research. I don't like the idea of telling people policies before they ask a question.
if the decision is to actually keep ID
@LoganM you don't like telling them the policy before they commit a crime but like making then regret after they commit it, is pretty much the same context in this specific scenario
@Prix No. Rather, I don't believe one should be forced to memorize every single law before one is allowed to go outside.
22:03
How about we put the reminder/notice thing to a vote? I agree that we shouldn't tell ppl what to do, but I do believe we should educate them on how they can go about doing it, to be more efficient
no one is telling you remember every single law but they do teach you to look both ways before crossing the street
That information should be in the tour page and/or help center
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ yes, what you have in mind?
@LoganM which less than 5% no one reads becoming rather pointless
@Prix And no one will read this either unless it's concise and clear. Including a huge amount of irrelevant information for any one user is neither.
"unless it's concise and clear" that is exactly what we need
22:05
Right now it is concise and clear
we don't want a wall of text and ...
Precisely because it's focused on exactly one thing
hmmm...
we just want a rather direct warning they can read, digest and make use of
@Prix No, we don't want a warning at all
22:06
we already have a warning
its been implemented a few minutes ago
No, it's a notice, not a warning
Telling people every policy ever associated with ID requests is way too overbearing. Telling people how to solve their own questions without asking us every time is perfectly fine.
"warning"
how about this, I'll make a meta about this and you each present your points, we'll leave it out for about 2 months, the one that has at least 2 votes more prevails, if there is a tie, I'll arbitrate a compromise
Not really in favor of debating this yet again on meta
IMO we already have this
@ɹǝzɐɹʞ im not good with those sorry
22:08
Let's stick with it rather than trashing it
we do, but I'd like this to be the end all be all
I don't like dragging this thing any further either
At least until we have some data regarding it, debating it right now is just stupid
we are losing a lot to Movies & TV
What are we losing?
I will be back after Ao Haru
22:09
I don't think we're losing anything to them
I agree
you mean questions about anime that are being made there rather than here?
bbiaf
I think one of the reasons ppl go there instead of here is that the moderation team has done such a terrible job of outreach
or that ppl misunderstand the purpose of the site
@Prix Not sure what you're talking about. This year they have 11 questions total tagged [anime]. We have something like 1500.
They're getting less than 1% of what we get.
@Prix most of them aren't very good and involve id-reqs
22:13
I have a hard time being even remotely concerned about that.
right now since we don't have as many active users as I'd like, I don't think putting a notice will have that much of an impact, but I believe some helpful hint tool tips here and there and be helpful.
if we ever get more traffic and avid uses, it might be something to look into, due to the sheer volume of potential traffic coming in/out
After reading some volumes of Get Backers, I suddenly want a Subaru 360...
that car is indestructible!

Regarding the idea of extending the notice on [tag:identification-request]s to cover low-quality text-based ID requests, I decided to write the skeleton of an answer in case it does get posted to meta. I'll leave it here for now in the absence of a meta post, but if someone does make one I'll edit this into a more complete answer.

---

For low quality ID requests, the problem is fixable via edits. Whether or not the user does so is a question of laziness, but for the most part someone who puts in the effort and knows at least a little bit about the series is capable of asking a good questi
