@Makoto do you think we could build an external suite of algorithms and tools to get data from SE and provide us with addon functionality to do better job at moderation and helping users while still being limited to the official functionality of the sites?
like someone would host a database and a webservice which would serve as a cache for its users so as not load up SO with requests too much, and do algo calculations for content filtered by whatever criteria is needed to give useful data, better than SO officially does
coz you talk about moderation tools which are not being developed and I wonder if it's something we can solve externally
I have practiacally 0 experience with mod tools so idk what you'd consider useful
only examples I can come up with is custom external flagging not visible to anyone but this addon's users, to then translate into officially supported flagging decisions, and replacing main site page (list of new questions) with a better one with filters by custom filtered content, such as my proposed [non]trivial votes
I think this could work because interested experienced users who participate in meta and in chat would hear about it from their friends there, and others don't need to know about it at all
also I think it would not be seen as a problem in the eyes of the corporation
doesn't solve any of the community issues tho… or actually maybe those are the issues?
all in all when I decided to take a break, I suppose I've already stopped contributing majorly to the sites, and it was a net positive for the world by then, and if the situation is already so good from a bystander's point of view, even if it seems bad to us from our point of reference, it's still the best place to be for Q&A of this sort, and I can't honestly say things are objectively bad right now, they're just bad for users who have burnt out, and it's probably to be expected.

@Memor-X I don't know man. Kyoko and lancer are both rather brazen, Shirou and Madoka share philosophical ideals of trying to save absolutely everybody even when the circumstances shouldn't permit it, and Sakura/Sayaka share similar plot archs.
Which is to say they started out as cheery and loving, only to end up emotionally broken dead by magic.
'course if we're being honest here, there's no way Rin and Mami are anything alike.
Besides that, while Shirou doesn't look especially flattering in Madoka's frilly pink dress, their school uniforms share some thematic similarities:
@Memor-X Nah, Madoka's Magical Girl outfit is more symbolic than anything Shirou ever wears as a human, I think. It's more representative of the philosophical ideals they share.
Shirou just wears practical clothing for the mostpart.
@Memor-X Although they share ideologies, Madoka never shared that particular aspect of Shirou's philosophy though. She ultimately defied it as a matter of fact, and that's why Shirou may never wear the Ultimate Madoka dress. =P

@Hakase Oh yes, totally. I've been interested in building a proper mobile app for the site which also dealt with those kinds of things. The tricky thing then is how easy/straightforward it gets to be when you're dealing with the volume of requests you get. It can be done and I've definitely thought about it before. The issue is one of getting the right level of support; the API is limited in power and a lot would have to be layered on top of the actual site, which feels a bit odd.
@Tonepoet actually i would not be surprised if she's still actually 2d there. for that kind of place you only need to render the front to the audience, not the entire body
@Memor-X I don't know about that. Even if the audience is generally in front of the audience, some of it at least depends on how far off to the side the viewers are. More importantly though, I think everywhere reported it as a 3D hologram. It'd be somewhat unremarkable if it was just a 2D projection, and there doesn't seem to be a projection screen.
@Memor-X Hmm, I suppose what we need to settle the matter is coinciding photographs from multiple angles. Our perspective should influence which parts of her we see if she's really 3D.

@Memor-X My point here is that the entire U.S. military only consists of somewhere between 800,000 and 900,000 people, and naturally most of them won't be at a single base. If all three million people who showed interest in the event really showed up (which I admit is improbable) there'd be a serious battle, especially if they were somewhat prepared.

@Memor-X The silliest thing about it though is that if you announce your intentions to storm a secret base, most of the sensitive stuff is probably going to be moved elsewhere. Heck, Area 51 is so well known that I'd actually be surprised if anything of worldshattering value was kept inside even before that.

@Mysticial Most of hem are going full-out against staff. Hot Meta Questions (which uses a server-side script to detect the "hotness" of Meta questions and feature them) was removed without consulting the community and the ability to feature Meta questions manually was given to mods instead. Mods are now considering writing a script to re-implement what staff took away.

@Mysticial It could be taken to imply that since implications are uncertain, but it is also possible that they had more recent off-site backups of the progress made with the Violet Evergarden movie, or maybe there are staffers among the dead, and they have to prioritize tasks that could have been performed concurrently beforehand.
