@Zanna I am interesting in your thoughts that you consider to be fluffy.

sorry for my absence
the quest for a document here has a tendency to turn into the quest for another document
for instance I am seeking a certain item, let us call it Document 0, from a certain authority. let us call him The Sub-Registrar. Having obtained Document 0 I will eventually have some useful rights. The Sub-Registrar insists I must present Document 1 in order to receive Document 0.

The authority that could issue Document 1 insists that I must present Document 2 in order to receive Document 1.

The authority that could issue Document 2 insists that I must present Document 3, which I feel nobody would be able to obtain by any means, along with Document 4, which I am not eligible to receive,
I'm taking a day off from that...

@EliahKagan your help was invaluable haha idk how long it would otherwise have taken me
@EliahKagan unfortunately I am not sure which of the things I did were actually needed... finally I just had to change the order in the submenu of the "OS Boot Manager" option in the UEFI settings to put ubuntu [...] first
when I ran boot repair, it wanted to reinstall GRUB, but it refused to do anything, saying "run this program in a live environment to enable that option"
obviously it was a live environment, but I couldn't figure out how to convince it that was the case
so I just chrooted into the installation and installed grub-efi-amd64, which seemed to work, I mean it didn't say it was already the newest version and it pulled in a bunch of related packages, so perhaps that step was meaningful, not sure
Windows still booted though so I tried the bcdedit set {bootmgr} path thing... that did something, because the boot process looked different, but the result was the same
after that I went into the UEFI settings to have another look at the options and changed the order and that worked
Lubuntu booted instead of Windows. Still no GRUB menu. But having to go into the UEFI settings to boot Windows isn't a problem for me since I'm not going to boot Windows, I just don't want to delete it or break it
anyway I'm running updates and installing stuff and trying to get things working now

@Zanna Ugh. :(
That sounds like the sort of thing Kafka wrote about.
(That's not to say I can't think of examples from contemporary life.)
@Zanna Are some things, then, not working on your new Lubuntu system?

@EliahKagan exactly like a Kafka novel :)
except, less awesome
@EliahKagan had to fix the wifi
as predicted
I haven't tested everything but, seems to be working fine, and Lubuntu is very nice
audio sounding good
This bureaucratic nightmare seems somehow entirely out of keeping with my daily experience. It's almost as if this sprawling administrative apparatus had been set up originally by some foreign power intent on suppressing and controlling the population rather than helping them... odd!

Almost indeed. :)

I'm very curious to hear your "very fluffy useless thoughts" about the logic.

12:50 PM
I'm reading the transcript hoping any thoughts at all might come back to me :D

1:29 PM
@Zanna This is what happens when you leave fluff on the ground unsaid -- a gust of wind comes by and blows it away, and the insights in the fluff are lost! :)

Hahaha true!

Having reread the transcript--specifically the parts about sentences, formulas, and truth value--do you have any reactions?
My two more specific questions are Am I making any sense? and also Which convention do you prefer for what we call a "sentence" in the context of symbolic logic?

I didn't manage to read all of it. Actually I only read the first two days of it. I am somehow being very inefficient in the evenings and wasting huge quantities of time somehow. I don't know why this is happening or how to fix it. I have a feeling I should try to write some notes on the conversation to work out whether I actually understood anything
I got as far as definite descriptions and I liked those
We had trouble with smith's umbrella. Or rather lack thereof, or excess of.
Maybe you were saying that if a sentence is ambiguous then we can't tell if it's true or false
I wondered about this context problem. I mean, the context may not be supplied, but it exists somewhere, doesn't it? If I say "she is an astronomer" then I know who I'm talking about
