@JoeW it was a test of the functionality. It was not an example of how it might be used. Tests and examples are different things. I'll now delete the test. But it does illustrate one thing, you tend to argue with an awful lot of what I post.
I used to put links here to politics-related questions in Law SE but you'd immediately go there and put argumentative comments under my questions, so I stopped.
I'll give this room one more try and see what happens...
Question: Hey news hounds! I'm having trouble finding out exactly what the latest "attack" from Israel to Iran hit, if anything. Was it purely demonstrative, or did something get blown-up or otherwise damaged?
(nah, I won't delete it now. I'd like folks to see that it is clearly labeled with "this is a test")
@uhoh And it is default behavior for how chat works. As I said on your question if you don't like it you should post a question on the main meta site and explain why you don't like it. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other users need to add text when providing a link to prevent the preview
@uhoh You are saying that users can't provide feedback on questions that are of interest to them?
As for your question, it appears that the attack was on an air base near Isfahan. From what I can find it the damage was pretty minimal. From what I have heard from the news that was in the background the talk was that the attack was a demonstrative act to show that they could hit them with attacks.
A better way to link a YouTube video without the preview is to put the title in square brackets and follow up with the link in parentheses which is in general the best way to post any link
@JoeW "You are saying that users can't provide feedback on questions that are of interest to them?" Again, the false and misleading statements. You always lead with that. And (it seems) always towards me. There is no "don't" or "can't" anywhere.
@JoeW The "You are saying that X" where X is something the other person did not say is trolling 101. I don't think you intend to troll, but you regularly use this form. It's disingenuous and makes a space unwelcoming to the people you do it to.
@uhoh I will admit that I am confused here. You provide a link of a post on another site and get upset when someone responds with something that you don't like.
@uhoh Not sure what you are responding to here, I was providing a way to post a YouTube link that doesn't show an auto preview and it isn't just a bare link that you have to add text to.
@uhoh Yes, I am objecting to you trying to dictate how other users are allowed to use this chat. Until now you have not been actively participating in here and you have not made any attempts to reach out to the users who are participating to let them know of your concerns.
@JoeW I simply tested that indeed the image does not appear as long as there is text in the line. One certainly has the option of additional formatting but it is not required.
It's a public chat room. I have not done anything that I feel disturbs, denigrates the quality or ambience of the room. Merely providing links as some sort of record based on my preference doesn't seem to be that incriminating, I believe.
@uhoh And you are talking about a default behavior for stack exchange chats, if a user wants to use that default behavior there is nothing wrong with it. You are free to post them in any way you see fit just as other users are free to post them so that the preview is shown.
@JoeW I could change my user name to "uhoh! JoeW keeps calling me a dictator" :-) or I can just start flagging you for targeting me. The attention you focus on me, often led with misleading misquotes is getting to be too much.
@uhoh You know that is not what I am doing, I am simply stating the fact that you seem to be driven to change how people are allowed to post in this chat.
I used in a haste rather blunt words for Speaker Johnson which was flagged. And I agree with that. Apart from that, I don't think I have used any indecent language that hurts someone, breaks the "decorum" unless it is made up by someone's preference. Re naming MTG, it's taken out of context as it is a characterization of her far-right rhetoric and brand of politics she resorts to.
@User1865345 what's wrong with actual names? The internet is full of places where we can call people derogatory terms. Klan wkth a "K" is not about forming a clan with a "c".
I don't know what's the issue actually is. For leaving links and videos isn't invented by me (ask Martin!). Personally, I do love engaging with others like JoeW. Few days ago, a user from India too conversed.
@uhoh I feel I am repeating again and again. There is nothing wrong or right. One can express how others do their brand of politics. Someone would not like it. As I said, if that is so in your case, I would refrain from using it.
When we paste naked YouTube links, the chat room software pulls in an image and displays it taking up an inordinate amount of vertical space that can be used for text discussion. It fragments the discussion and is visually distracting.
@uhoh If you don't like how they designed the chat to work you should make a post on the main meta site and explain why you don't like it. Otherwise let people use it the way it was designed to work.
@JoeW I love how it works (again! the false statement about me and what I think) - all you have to do is add a few words of text. What I've suggested here several times is that the functionality allows for us to suppress the big graphic by adding at least a little text to the line.
@uhoh Again, you are trying to dictate how people use a feature that was designed to work a certain way by stack exchange. If you don't want a preview to show you shouldn't be trying to get users to add text to a post to keep it from happening, you should be making a post on the main meta that is only talking about the preivew in links.
That question you link to seems to be a massive collections of issues that you have with this chat room. You really need to stick to a single issue instead of keep expanding it.
@JoeW information on that page explains the functionality of how the chat software works, and that it is "by design". That's all. You perceive fights and arguments that don't exist.
@JoeW If linking is merely the issue, then I think every room that Michael uses would be under the scanner. Personally, I feel it's the correct medium for such purpose apart from the fact that most of these rooms would otherwise be frozen.
@uhoh again, JoeW made a valid point and it just went straight rumination in circles. So it feels lengthy. But it was valid. IMO, it feels the problem is hugely exaggerated.
@uhoh Yet you are trying to get people to change how they post so that the preview does not show. If you want that by design to change you shouldn't be asking users to change how they post instead you should be making a post on the main meta dedicated to your request and explain why you think it should be changed. Until that happens there is no reason to keep asking others to change how they post so that the by design preview doesn't show.
@User1865345 I think how this channel gets used is okay, though I would like it if there was more people chatting in here.
@JoeW "trying to get" No. I have not yet tried. All I did was mention that I'm thinking about suggesting that. You persist in mischaracterization, specifically towards me.
@uhoh I see you are trying to argue with semantics again. You are making a "suggestion" because you don't like how people use this chat. That "suggestion" is trying to make people change what/how they interact with this chat. To me that sounds like you are attemping to dictate what/how people can post in this chat.
@JoeW if it were reversed, you'd go through the roof if I did it to you. You would not see it as semantics if the shoe were on the other foot. You'd see it as a a personal attack. When you systematically use wrong, inflammatory mischaracterizations, it's not a semantic difference. It's a trolling technique. I don't (yet) think you use it for that purpose, but it has that effect nonetheless.
@JoeW and you seem to focus it specifically on me. I think it's because I engage and others ignore.
@uhoh I am simply stating it how I see it, you are trying to change how people interact with this chat because you don't like i and I considering that attempting to dictate. You also complain about default behavior and wanting people to change how they post in here because you don't like it.
@uhoh I am focusing on it because that is what I see you doing, trying to change how people communicate in this chat even though you don't participate in here normally and didn't even attempt to bring it up with the people in this chat
2
@uhoh Again, I am just saying how I see your actions
@JoeW you are officially ignored now. I'll no longer engage. You're on my "never engage again" list because of this incredibly consistent behavior that fits into the "troll" category.
@uhoh Sorry you feel that way, but I will always speak up if someone is trying to force changes on how others interact with this site because they don't like it.
A good example is the attempts at getting people to change the way they post links to stop the auto previews but apparent unwillingness to make an actual effort to have that design decision revisited.
This is sad and frustrating. The conversation has been going nowhere. I have nothing to add anything here anymore.
@uhoh that's one thing you can always choose if you feel agitated from some user. But again imo, JoeW was trying to make an observation and not troll you. Anyways, don't want to repeat the loop again.
I hope you visit Agora. I enjoy your questions as well as your detailed pick of those news interviews. But this episode seems to be a bit too much.
@JoeW when someone is not eager to solve an issue and make problems out of nowhere, I don't see any good ending.
