So I feel like my "alternative solution" may have been slightly misunderstood

So the problem is you want to avoid a complete migration

I see it as you want to disable the service and enable foundation search, then remove search express 2010

I'm thinking, since we know removing SSE breaks SharePoint I can leave SSE installed but disable the service from the "Services on Server" page and enable the Foundation Search again

I'm trying to do this cheaply as possible since, had I known this third party product the customer was planning on using was not compatible with SSE I never would have installed it

What problem are you trying to solve now?

The problem we have with the third party software is that it was poorly written. Basically its "If Foundation: Use Foundation Search; Else if Standard or Enterprise: Use Standard Search"

That might just allow them to work

They didn't handle a case with Foundation and SSE

Its a third part app that stores data in SP and uses the SP Search capabilities but makes poor assumptions on what search services to use

Its a product called Papersave

I don't really know anything about it. I'm just in charge of SharePoint for this customer

So the guy who is in charge of papersave kept coming to me with questions and when he finally got support on the phone they said something along the lines of "Well heres your problem! Your search service needs to be enabled!" And I told them it was... we use Search Server Express... they said something like "Search Server what??"

They aren't a Microsoft partner, and I can't see any SP accreditations on a lookup, I'm amazed your client went with them

Yeah I unfortunately know very little about them and their product

It would just need the name adding in for the correct service (At a hunch)

I know. It should be a fairly trivial change since they obviously have logic in there that differentiates between Foundation and Standard

If you want to update your answer I'll accept it and give you the bounty as you have covered all the bases. (My alternative should work, if not rebuild / migration is a viable option for "downgrading")

Sure. I should be fine as I've done rebuilds before but I wanted to avoid it if possible. And I didn't want to quote the smaller amount of work if I wasn't mostly confident it would work.

Yeah. All I've really got here is a monthly SPUG meeting which consists a few people from the rival consulting firm here and people who just want more info on SP for their organization. Sometimes we get useful tech conversation as well though

We have that at our local Microsoft Office, we have some massive companies in Edinburgh, probably 2nd biggest hub outside of London. It's really good to organise events, we take it in turns and invite companies to presentations, Banks, Universities etc.. It really pays off.
