@NathanMerrill The stars aligned. I used akabeko+pen nib+necronimicon+whirlwind to kill donu and deca with a single attack.
That is the most satisfying thing that has ever happened to me in a game, especially since I was debating whether akabeko would be good or not and then I bought it 2 floors before the boss fight.
Weird: I could've sworn that last time I played Snakebird I gave up after twenty levels or so (which also matches my Steam achievements). But I found a message from two years ago, where I said I beat everything except the bonus levels.

Did they change how combust+enrupture+tungsten rod works? I thought that used to still proc the strength gain, but when I bought tungsten rod it screwed everything up
