@MadScientist and yet still an improvement
Although it'll be really frustrating when the GOP blame Dem for everything while they roadblock them
@Wipqozn Yeah, at least nothing will happen instead of actively going downhill
i for one am grateful that republican lawsuits and legislatures dragged the count out all week to give trump that much less time to trash things as a lame duck
That is very nice of them
@TimStone Now all that's left is the civil war!
I was hoping for a 269-269 tie so the House could just vote Report of the Week guy in
trump apparently is not going to concede and media is hand wringing over it like a concession speech changes the vote totals
17:05
@GodEmperorDune Lol yeah, he doesn't have to concede to lose
Rep. Clay Higgins, Louisiana's 3rd everyone
2011 was a simpler time
@Sterno too bad i can't star this
17:11
@TimStone jfc this looks like something from r/conspiracy holy shit
breaking news: it's going to be nothing
like that's been the case with literally every single "trump insider tell-all" book for the last couple of years
there's going to be like one thing where people might go "well, that might actually be illegal" but no one's going to do anything about it because god forbid a rich white dude breaks the law and actually gets punished for it
I mean it's extremely funny that of all the people who you wouldn't get to sign a NDA you'd pick Brad Parscale
Like he just looks like the kind of guy to scam you!
or it will be "here is all this bad stuff i saw that i didn't tell anyone at the time because it would be juicier in a book later"
"I beat my wife and so did Donald Trump" or whatever
17:21
will trump rescind his medal of freedom?
So I just tuned in to Rush and he just said "I think they're going to give North Carolina to Trump. And when I say "they" I mean the democrative operatives assigning states. I think they want it to look close."
Unclear if he meant "media/AP" calling that state for him, or like, talking about ballot stuffing
> just tuned in to Rush
why would you do that to yourself
I read conservative blogs too
it's like buying bad rats
I like to see what stupid shit is coming my way
17:22
Van Drew won, my god
NJ being NJ, smh
Oh god. Oh no
I closed the tab Rush was playing in, but it didn't stop
HELP
You're trapped now
@Sterno I'm sorry there is no escape
BRB, finding magnets
17:24
sterno you have to move houses, its the only way to be sure
@Sterno o7
i will go buy a recorder and play the titanic theme for you
Trump is raging about these "ballots past election day" which, to my understanding, have been segregated and not even counted yet
@Sterno somehow he thinks that ballots are being cast now and still counted?
Pretty sure he's talking about the ones that just needed to be postmarked by election day and could arrive up until today
But I'm pretty sure PA hasn't even counted those yet
i'd argue that he doesn't even know what he is talking about
17:27
"democrative operatives assigning states" - Yeah, those're called voters.
@GodEmperorDune Oh absolutely. See also: Him not realizing "Stop the count" would mean he'd lose.
He's STILL claiming the observers were denied access, even though it's completely false
Really terrified to see what the more extreme of his supporters are going to do
"These claims on Twitter by Trump's kids wouldn't make it to Fox Business, where all kinds of facts go to die." - Jake Tapper
@NapoleonWilson if he believed that, why didn't he concede the election before election day?
17:41
@fredley So a comment I saw on McCains speech that I thought was interesting is that the people supporting Trump now and showing up at his rallies are the same people that showed up for McCain. A key difference is in how the presidents react to these people.
@fredley Lol
When they "booo" and yell racial slurs... McCain trys to calm them. Trump, on the other hand, incites them. He encourages them.
@TimStone We already saw that the boats themselves turned on Trump
It's why he's so dangerous, and also why he's done so well. He's allowing these people to reveal and embrace their anger and hate, and whatever other inner terribleness they have.
@Wipqozn is that photoshopped?
17:53
@GodEmperorDune I'm not sure
I'm at work so I don't want to try and verify it by searching "cnn pornhub"
Although it was the IT Guy that sent it to me hahaha
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, it was photoshopped. Originally posted in reddit.com/r/gifs by user "Alphabunsquad"
@BradC His response is just so perfect
And for a hot second you probably weren't sure which Georgia I was talking about
True
Last Week Tonight is going to be soooooo good this week
Nevada just announced they only counted 30000 yesterday instead of the 51000 they said they would (roughly)
I think they're self-memeing at this point
@Sterno n-n-notice me media-senpai
@TimStone what is bannon in trouble for again?
18:20
Criminal fraud for the We Build the Wall shit
Saying he'd like to behead Dr Fauci
@Sterno yeah this is the new thing, i was thinking about the old thing
@TimStone oh right
@Sterno Seriously though
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The compact is designed to ensure that the candidate who receives the most votes nationwide is elected president, and it would come into effect only when it would guarantee that outcome. As of November 2020, it has been adopted by fifteen states and the District of Columbia. These states have 196 electoral votes, which is 36...
Hey, weren't we supposed to have Trump's health care plan by now?
18:52
Heh, I actually followed a season of that.
Back a million years ago when he was just a random eccentric business guy.
@EddieKal "with remarks that were really removed from reality" ~ Reporter about POTUS
Hopefully just 4 more months
and then we can just ignore him
ideally because he's in jail, but that won't happen
"this face is not over. once the election is final, Donald Trump will be reelected"
It's just so absurd. Past absurd.
and also horrifying!
...so I guess after Donnie Jr called out GOP for not defending trump, they started to go on TV to defend him
Ted Cruze and Lindsay Garham. Don't forget their names. The worst of the worst.
Also don't forget literally any other GOP, since they're al equally guilty for the past 4 years.
@Wipqozn they're all gonna jump ship to the lincoln project or whatever
@Wipqozn Yeah funny that in 2015 and 2016 the pair of them both denounced Trump and then once Trump was elected they had instant changes of heart and became Trump fanboys
Tim
Tim
19:11
anyone seen analysis of remaining NC vote counts?
How close can the house change majority?
Not sure if it'll flip, but Biden doesn't need it with PA + Nevade.
dem have a nice healthy majority right now, basically.
...but not in the senate...
@Wipqozn 2 months, not 4
@Sterno yeah but it'll FEEL like 4 months
19:26
2016 will continue to last forever
Now Corona is here, the transition of 2016 can happen
@fredley The election has been distracting from it this week, but Corona is likely to get much worse in the US and most of Europe
Yuuuup. Christmas is coming, and Corona is still gonna be here.
Yeah, Canada is currently going through the second wave, and it's worse than before
Snap!
Although the atlantic provinces have been doing fine still
19:31
Aaaaaand we have Brexit coming up literally in a few weeks
Actual Brexit for real this time
Shit's gonna be so fucked
@fredley I could've sworn that already happened
It's worse here too. We just have 50% of our country pretending it's gone, because that's how you win
It's been a long few years
@Wipqozn It really helps with viruses if you have no people
@Wipqozn It's been a long 2016*
@fredley Really though
19:32
Like, your countries can stop faking it about COVID now that Trump lost. 50% of Americans know it's all a hoax and you were just lying about it
@Wipqozn that's what is happening pretty much everywhere. I remember when the virologist Christian Drosten talked about this in his podcast in April or so. There's a huge difference between containing localized outbreaks and containing the virus when it is equally spread everywhere already. You can get a much steeper increase in the latter case
I'm not sure it was posted since I can't remember everything that was posted this week, but did we talk about the whale tail statue metro yet?
@Wipqozn The same Lindsey Graham that said "I want you to use my words against me if ever we end up debating a new judge right before the election in 2020"? C'est incroyable!
@Sterno And a wall, and...
@EddieKal The nice thing is, he doesn't actually have to concede
19:41
@MadScientist Now that Trump can't save the people from it anymore of course it will!
@SaintWacko Why is that?
@EddieKal the votes being certified by the states does it, concessions are just a tradition to not look like a jerk
@EddieKal Conceding is just a way to end the vote counting early. When all the votes are counted, the election is over no matter what
@SaintWacko conceding doesn't even end the vote counting
@GodEmperorDune Oh really?
19:43
@SaintWacko All the votes always need to be counted
I guess that makes sense
@SaintWacko Unfortunately that is not how it works
So conceding really does nothing at all
Just the media stops caring once someone concedes
legally the states have to announce and "certify" final official count. dates depend on the state but late November or december timeframe
19:44
@GodEmperorDune Ah, too bad, would've been an easy way to stop the count.
@NapoleonWilson "easy"
@NapoleonWilson Haha
@EddieKal Why do you say that?
@NapoleonWilson i mean the media will stop caring once the concession is there'
although actually "I give up. CHECKMATE LIERBALS!"
@EddieKal tl;dw?
16 minutes is too long for a ountry I don't live in haha
The general election is by and large just showmanship. There is nothing you can do if (1) the slates of electors refuse to follow their state's general election results and (2) there is no state law in place prohibiting faithless electors
I would guess unless the country breaks down till January 20th, he'd just need to get dragged out of the building by the army or whoever.
Basically there is a loophole in the constitution that could allow a candidate who loses both the popular vote and the electoral vote to grab power
That is Van Jones' argument in that video and I believe he is right
@EddieKal via faithless electors, right?
19:47
@EddieKal Well, yes, if the electors desert, I guess it's fucked. But provided the election goes through as planned.
the thing with all of this is, if you are going to seize power, you don't need a constitutional loophole to do it, you just do it
@GodEmperorDune which I suppose is exactly what he's trying to do
trump could say "screw you, make me leave" and just do whatever he wants
@GodEmperorDune This is exactly what I expect to happen tbh
I'd like to be optimistic as the next guy but I think this is far from being over
19:49
@Wipqozn i think the GOP establishment's appetite for doing that is too low for it to work now
the reason trump survived impeachment is congressional GOP support
States can send in a different slate of electors and basically just push away the legit ones
@GodEmperorDune oh I didn't say I think it would work. I just think he'll try it.
I would be more pessimistic if I hadn't seen a lot of GOP support drop for his weird crap lately. If he loses them, then the only (albeit not zero) danger comes from civil uprisings.
Also the president could theoretically declare national emergency
Like they do in authoritarian countries
Actually I hope he does. I'd love to see him being dragged out of the white house. I mean it'll probably lead to civil war due to his most insane supporters, BUT STILL.
19:51
@EddieKal Don't really have time to watch it, but from some other non-video resources it seems like if he doesn't concede, and it's contested, there are other things that could happen to cause trouble, but the actual lack of concession doesn't really affect anything
@EddieKal and yet for 200 years, how many faithless electors have there been?
@SaintWacko legally he doesn't have most options left. the margins are likely too high for recounts to fix anything. Faithless electors don't happen, practically speaking. He doesn't really have any sort of legal arguments to try to stop ballot counts at an opportune time like in gore v bush
@GodEmperorDune That's my opinion, too
I'm seeing a source that says 90 faithless elector votes and only one was ever for the nominee's opponent.
About/more than 2/3rds have been for another candidate because the original candidate had died.
@Yuuki there is still a pandemic going on...
19:56
That's a "failure" rate of 0.3%.
@GodEmperorDune "Another candidate" meaning "another candidate from the same party because the original died".
Of course you could simply do anything you like. The question is if he has institutional support. I guess there are forces within the army or police that might support him, but broad enough for a violent power grab? The only chance I saw was through a pseudo-legal thing with the whole vote-fraud narrative and a corrupt court. But I can't quite buy into a real third world military coup after almost anyone seems to be just waving his hands at his antics.
@Yuuki of course
@NapoleonWilson the GOP establishment is satisfied with a biden presidency after what they've accomplished with judiciary and such over the last 4 years. trump is not useful anymore
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, they got what they wanted
And they still have the Senate.
@Yuuki From 1968 to 2004, there emerged a total number of 6 faithless electors. But in the last election (2016), 10 cropped up.
19:58
@Yuuki Maybe
@GodEmperorDune Indeed. And they're distancing tehmselves already to make everyone forget how anti-democratic they are.
This country is extremely polarized now
I wouldn't be surprised by anything any more
Also true.
I'm just glad I got home while the count was still happening
20:00
Just in case things go to hell
Ah, the paywalled Post again.
There is an interesting turn of phrase people say in Texas: just hide and watch. I think Trump is going all-in this time and I am apprehensive about the prospect of hundreds of thousands of armed Trump supporters mobilizing all over the country
It is already happening in Arizona, Florida, New York even
Unfortunately this is exactly what the 2nd amendment gave them their weapons for, to defend against "tyrants" trying to suppress them. Just that they've been misled who the tyrants are.
@NapoleonWilson The op-ed makes a point that while Trump's words are authoritarian, the institutions and even his own cabinet have not (yet?) cooperated with him to back up his words with actions
Which is also why the rest of the GOP have also not (yet?) fully backed Trump
Trump is preparing to hold a victory rally this weekend.
Someone needs to tell him.
20:08
> More significant than what is being said is what is not being said — or done. So far Attorney General William P. Barr, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and acting Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf — the men in control of what, in other countries, are known as the “power ministries” — have not publicly said one word to support Trump’s baseless accusations of fraud and have not made any public moves to save Trump from defeat.
If you think your election is stolen from you, you need to rise up. And if you think the state organs are complicit in it, what does it help when everyone tells you there is no fraud. Eddie Kal made an excellent point that it wouldn't be much different if Trump had actually stolen the election. The other side is equally confident they're right and got a moral duty for defending the elections.
Ultimately you have to trust that people at large aren't completely delusional, which does get harder and harder.
Right, that's my worry too. But I'm not actually concerned (perhaps overly optimistically) until I see the actual US government being mobilized
Which Trump could very well do if he actually believes what he's saying, but I rather hope he either does not or is too incompetent to act on them
@Sterno I'm starting to think he actually thinks these ballots are fake, and doesn't understand his own lies.
@Wipqozn He does like to go on and on about the senility of old age
I'm really curious to see how long this goes on for. IS he just going to keep claiming victory even after he's no longer physically in the office?
is he going to just like, hold rallies randomly !?
20:15
I think he will claim victory forever.
He'll leave, but he'll say he was the real winner and was cheated
There is no scenario in which he concedes
@Wipqozn He still complained about Obama and Hilary after he is already the President
I could honestly imagine a reality where he holds rallies for the next 4 years and his supporters all show up
That'd be great. Split the Republican base
@Wipqozn Yeah, I could see that
President-in-exile
Unless you jail him away, he'll probably stay "president of the hearts" for years on Twitter.
20:16
A much less fun Emperor Norton
@NapoleonWilson I don't think him going to jail would stop that
Well, okay, maybe not in a rich people jail.
Gotta get him into a real GOP-funded hell hole, but that's not going to happen.
Trump might get GA. 8k+ (already forgot exact number) military ballots outstanding that haven't been counted yet.
@Sterno Yeah, that's what I've been hearing
I just saw some crazy in trumps replies saying they were going to leave "this country for good" and go to new jersey instead
what
20:20
@Wipqozn lolwut
@Wipqozn Trump claimed it, duh. He used 'hereby' so it's legal. It's called Trumplandia now
There's also some copy/paste going around about leaving for MExico
@Wipqozn “When the United States sends its people, they’re not sending their best... They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with them."
let them fight . gif
20:39
@Wipqozn I mean, lots of people feel like NJ doesn't belong in the US.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! The difference between Trump and Biden is less than what the Libertarian candidate got in Michigan and Nevada! Michigan and Nevada
So in this case, third party vote is in fact a vote for Biden
@TimStone i really never thought i'd see the day that crenshaw is the more reasonable side of a debate
also, i see crenshaw posters everywhere and it makes me sad
Yeah :(
(and also worried for my safety, but i try to ignore that)
20:55
Exclusive: RNC seeking to raise at least $60 million to fund Trump legal challenges - sources reut.rs/38h5Urd
> The Republican National Committee has reached out to donors as it seeks to raise at least $60 million to fund legal challenges brought by President Donald Trump over the results of the U.S. presidential election, two sources familiar with the matter said.
21:19
@fredley I just got up and am catching up on the transcript. That brought me to tears.
21:32
@Wipqozn lawyers all over the country have been salivating since this whole thing started
21:43
So I guess is on Reince Priebus CBS talking about how Arizona could be a "psychological lift" for the Trump campaign and what they're next step forwards is and I'm just ???? You lost. It's over. There is no way forward.
It's probably a good thing I can't view the video in Canada or I might lose brain cells
22:18
ignoring 2 minutes edit is the best partof modship
because I'm not sure how I managed to leave out pasting the name, but I blame mobile
abuse of power
^that was one of the articles he got-off on
@Wipqozn Is he... still the campaign manager? Because if he is then I guess it is in his best interest to ignore reality and pretend the campaign needs to continue so he can collect a paycheck
@PrivatePansy I don't think so.
When do they swear in the new president?
I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen until January.
22:33
@user6232128 january 20th or so
> Donald Trump is sworn in as president of the United States Donald Trump's current term as president began on Jan. 20, 2017. It will end on Jan. 20, 2021, at noon.
High noon at the OK Corral
22:46
POLITICO: Pennsylvania Republicans ask Supreme Court to enforce separation of late-arriving ballots.
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/06/pennsylvania-republicans-supreme-court-mail-ballots-434744
Yet, Wikipedia says the gun fight occurred at 3:00 pm at the OK Corral?
> The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in September that ballots arriving up to three days after Election Day would be counted. However, Republicans contend that decision usurped the role of the Pennsylvania legislature.
@user6232128 time zones
> Pennsylvania Republicans and legislative leaders took the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court back in September. The court turned down the request on Oct. 19 on a 4-4 vote. However, the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the court could affect that balance.
And also late ballots are already being separated
@GodEmperorDune riiight.
22:49
@Wipqozn it flipped already though, late ballots are not going to flip it back, the margins are too big
@GodEmperorDune Indeed. But I doubt Trump understands that.
They're going to have to drag him out kicking and screaming
They probably just want SCOTUS to side with them so they can use it as precedent for their future voter suppression attempts.
@Wipqozn if SCOTUS was smart, they'd throw it out on standing grounds
Voter suppression has and will go on for many generations to come.
Nobody can tell a business owner how to schedule his workers.
23:01
@user6232128 some state laws mandate several hours paid leave for any employee who claims to be voting on election day
national mandatory paid day off would be better
The employee still has to ask the employer.
Best would be ensuring that early voting is available everywhere so that people don't have to be available on one specific day to vote
"Operational needs" out weight mandate.
23:33
I never got why people just don't vote on sunday.
Probably the founding fathers threw a 7-sided die and now it's the rule for eternity, because the founding fathers of course planned it deliberately for the millennia to come in their eternal wisdom.
@NapoleonWilson black churches historically did a "souls to the polls" the sunday before election day, where everyone goes and votes en masse after church service. White politicians literally banned voting on sundays to end this practice
@GodEmperorDune I'm shocked that's not at the federal level
@user6232128 Actually, in Canada (and I assume the states with these rules) employees don't need to do anything of the sort. The responsibility is on the employer to schedule their staff in such a way they have time to vote.
@Wipqozn to get it to the federal level you have to go through people like trump
23:39
@Wipqozn This entire election will serve to further shit like that by undermining itself and the democracy.
@user6232128 But Trump hasn't been ruling since the dawn of time.
"People like"
You're losing sight of the forest for the trees.
@user6232128 huh?
You can't see the forest for the trees.
Trump is just one tree.
23:45
@user6232128 I think you're taking my statement of "Trump" too literally. I did mean "Trump and people like him". I just didn't think I needed to typeit out.
Soon to be cut down to be a stump :-)
Obama was in office for 8 years, and since democrat voters are normally the ones targeted by voter supression efforts, I'm surprised they didn't push something through at the federal level.
but I also know federal vs state is a weird and sticky subject so not sure what that actual process is
I think it's hard for the federal government to mandate something like that because the Constitution makes the states responsible for running elections
@Wipqozn so people like him have been ruling since the dawn of time, right?
Don't worry, I see various GOP members telling Trump how important voting is. I'm sure they're about to make a 180 on their decades of voter supression. They're good and righteous now!
23:49
@murgatroid99 Can't they just amend it to the constitution? or does that require a super majority?
@Wipqozn You need a lot of support to amend the Constitution. I think it's a supermajority of both houses of congress and 3/4 of the state legislatures
@murgatroid99 I take it there hasn't been any amendments in a very long time, then? lol
@Wipqozn The last one was in 1992
@murgatroid99 and it was proposed in the 1700s?!? what
Thirty-three amendments to the United States Constitution have been proposed by the United States Congress and sent to the states for ratification since the Constitution was put into operation on March 4, 1789. Twenty-seven of these, having been ratified by the requisite number of states, are part of the Constitution. The first ten amendments were adopted and ratified simultaneously and are known collectively as the Bill of Rights. Six amendments adopted by Congress and sent to the states have not been ratified by the required number of states. Four of these amendments are still pending, one is...
@murgatroid99 supermajority in congress OR 3/4 states
23:51
@GodEmperorDune Seems easy. Just gotta grab the right 4 states! (yes I think I'm very funny)
@GodEmperorDune It has to be proposed by a 2/3 majority of congress, and then ratified by 3/4 of either congress or the states
wait prohibition was added to the constitution!?
Weird
@murgatroid99 actually we have it backwards, 2/3rds of states or congress has to propose, 3/4ths states have to ratify
@GodEmperorDune Wikipedia says what I just said
> An amendment may be proposed and sent to the states for ratification by either:

The U.S. Congress, whenever a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives deem it necessary; or
A national convention, called by Congress for this purpose, on the application of the legislatures of two-thirds of the states (34 since 1959).[2][3][4] The convention option has never been used.
To become part of the Constitution, an amendment must be ratified by three-fourths of the states (38 since 1959) by either (as determined by Congress):
23:53
@murgatroid99 Oh snap get rekt @GodEmperorDune
That's a lot of red tape.
@GodEmperorDune Right, proposed by 2/3 of congress (or a constitutional convention, but that's never happened), and then ratified by 3/4 of congress or the states
@murgatroid99 Does congress mean senate + house?
No, I misread the second bit. It's just 3/4 of the states, in two different ways
@Wipqozn yes
@murgatroid99 3/4 congress cannot ratify. it needs to be 3/4 of state legislatures
@murgatroid99 ok same page now
23:55
But it's not 2/3 of the states proposing. It's 2/3 of the states agreeing to convene a constitutional convention, which then makes proposals
Maybe the reason there's been no new amendment since 1992 is because no one understands the rules. Congress is just too embarrassed to admit it.
You know what's going up besides just Biden's lead? checks notes COVID infections! Good times, good times
