Yeah, Biden will probably win now. This is the whole rea Dems are stepping down. Stop sanders from winning.

Yeah at this point the game is stop Biden
That's just very simply where we're at
Meanwhile:
> Chris Matthews, longtime MSNBC host of "Hardball," announces his resignation t.co/lhJtMqxkTk

And to drive this home, he literally got on the show, said he was resigning, and then noped the f out of there
Which is just incredible
Congratulations to the new Hardball hosts Amy Klobuchar and Mayor Pete

@Unionhawk Yesterday: John Oliver has a brief segment making fun of Chris Matthews. Today: Chris Matthews resigns. Coincidence?

It sounds like he just kind of walked out

He did, lol

12:29 AM
It cut to commercial then when it came back someone else was sitting there like "what the fuck just happened"

Some junior producer really cutting their teeth tonight

As a point of information, this tweet was posted while this rally was occurring

Furiously tweeting as Pete walks by you to the microphone

Really wild honestly that we just continue to gloss over the fact the former Vice President once threatened to choke someone with a chain

And just has open contempt for anyone who wants a better life

1:13 AM
Just extremely confused how dignity is choking someone with a chain and then making them go to an in-network ER

"hi Joe I would like not to have my student debt stick around in bankruptcy" "listen here jack,"

@TimStone at the same the later bit also applies to that Kobe guy who died a few weeks back. news outlets were scrambling to be the first to report on it and was saying how it was his entire family or his wife or all his daughter who also died
do you want to be first and have to make a correction because you said something wrong? or do you want to be last and have all correct and trust worthy information to report on

I mean usually you don't post that people are wrong and got info too early while the information is playing out to be correct directly in front of you

1:30 AM
@Memor-X The former gets way more views and thus revenue.
It's a chicken and egg problem.

Tim
When suddenly most other former candidates endorse someone else, ...
One in IN, One in MN, One in TX
Some VA officials
some (former) senators, including Hillary's former VP partner
the closest "friend" who isn't a friend
Bernie is so lonely in the party's leadership

Well if it makes you feel better I'm getting reports that folks are only getting assigned like 15 texts that's how many people are calling and texting right now

Tim
1:57 AM
Guess who is going to win TX?

I'm not getting many texts but I did get a lot of spam calls around 5 today.

1 hour later…
3:16 AM
@Unionhawk well imo it’s actually pretty likely Trump because that could cause so much anger on the left if a contested convention picked him if Bernie had a plurality
Hopefully they don’t do that
ugh Fox would never shut up about the “conspiracy” to stop Sanders and how the establishment Democrats (and probably AOC & the squad for good measure) are a bunch of satanist conspirators with Iran against sanders or other bullshit
and i mean personally I’d definitely be angry at the superdelegates

2 hours later…
5:44 AM
@Stormblessed but can bet you they'd say the same thing about Biden if he was winning before and that the establishment is trying to hide the whole Burisma thing bu stopping Biden

3 hours later…
8:35 AM
@Unionhawk Why exactly does student debt persist through bankruptcy? Is it a law? Or a SCOTUS decision? Or a government guideline?

8:47 AM
@Nzall Federal Debt
They can garnish Social Security Disability even.

Ah, so bankruptcy only cancels out non-government debt?

Non-Federal yes, I don't know about state or municipality.

What is bankruptcy, actually? Is it simply "I do some legal magic and now i've lost all my debt and all my possessions, apart from my federal debt"?
Or does it also involve prison sentences or something like that?

No prison.
That's the point.

But you do lose all your non-Federal debt and everything you own, right?
or do you get to keep certain things?

8:52 AM
You get to keep stuff. It depends how it happens what you lose.
I declared bankruptcy in 2015.
Medical expenses hit. I was unprepared for getting sick when I did.
Basically, my credit cards are screwed.

2 hours later…
10:42 AM
i generally find their videos factual

11:15 AM
@Memor-X That was informative, thanks

@Nzall In the US, medical emergencies are the #1 cause of people just being destroyed financially.

Like, I always thought you had to have sold off all your properties to pay for the debt before you could declare bankruptcy

I was riding high, in a job I loved when I woke up blind in one eye.
MS

Like, if you've already sold your house, your car, your phone, your computer and everything else you owned, then you could declare bankruptcy. Didn't know that the selling of stuff was a part of your bankruptcy

I went from everything being fine to 'I can't pay my bills' overnight.
I had no assets but my household goods.
You get to keep a home, a car, a phone, clothes, your pet, etc.
It can be denied.
It's not like an easy get-out-of-debt plan.

11:24 AM
@Jolenealaska unless your rich though it's less get out of debt and more avoiding paying back something so you can keep your money....or atleast that's how Trump makes it out since apparently all real estate people do it which is why it's not a bad thing he's declared bankruptcy before

It's one of many many things that the poor can barely hang on to, but that the rich just abuse. imo

@Memor-X that's not personal bankruptcy

And Trump says that too. As if only personal bankruptcy is failure.
If you play the game, it's just a card to play.
If you are trying to survive... well
LOSER

@Nzall yeh, nothing to do with the fact they are all Sonic fans that stayed up for it

@Memor-X I mean, you might think you're joking, but there are at least 2 people who have a hedgehog as a pet who took their pet with them to the theater

12:24 PM
@Nzall it's explicitly called out in the law and includes for-profit lenders per the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005
Biden voting Yea in the Senate, Sanders voting Nay in the house, Warren not yet in Congress

12:41 PM
Just one of the many examples of Joe having his hands in bad things happening in congress

Why the heck is the WP paying for an ad in Trending for #SuperTuesday
like how is that going to gain them moneys
oh they do have an ad on the top of the hashtag
but still kinda funny to see a promoted electoral process
@Unionhawk wow what a very smart fellow

@GnomeSlice I read this as "statements on cannibalism" and thought "did we devolve this far?"

how do you see the actual tweet a video with a "from @whoever" on it is from?
> As the conference opened in Washington on Sunday, Netanyahu, speaking to the group via satellite on the eve of Israel’s elections, derided the Palestinians as “the pampered children of the international community.” The AIPAC audience applauded.
good job bernie not even being on skype there
> In his Sunday remarks, Netanyahu told AIPAC he was moving forward with plans to annex Palestinian territory — a move that would make the long-sought two-state solution all but impossible.
> Netanyahu previously championed a law that demoted the Arabic language, promoted Jewish settlements and declared that only “the Jewish people” have “the right to exercise national self-determination” in Israel, which Arabic members of Israel’s parliament called “apartheid.” Even AIPAC scolded Netanyahu last year for aligning with an ultranationalist, racist party.
also this:
> Pence went on to imply that these Democrats were trying “to cloak their animus toward Israel inside the phony mantle of friendship” and that they “side with Israel’s enemies” — as if supporting Palestinian human rights means siding with Israel’s enemies. The AIPAC crowd applauded both.

2:08 PM
I mean, supporting Palestinian human rights does mean siding with Israel's enemies (Palestine), yes

Bloomberg fucking said that we should continue giving them military aid with no conditions...
like at least have the conditions of building less settlements. The settlements are a huge reason that the two state solution looks like it'll never happen
so yeah that's great
that's not how it works
like the flu vaccine only works on specific types of flu that it is made for, and this is a separate virus entirely

@Stormblessed any guess he saw that on Fox News?

@Stormblessed and by many accounts, was not a great vaccine this year.

2:24 PM
NOOOOO!!!!
john delaney is on cnn currently
this is a travesty

@TimStone ok that’d be cool

Minor blurb in the story, but lol

i do like that de blasio actually has achieved some things
the media should have stopped with the “funny” stories about how everyone hates him, that’s why he lost so much I think

Relatedly, apparently per friend of the show Mike Bloomberg, NYC's pandemic plan includes checks notes having Rikers prisoners dig mass graves
very cool

2:29 PM
lol in the latest installment of "I shouldn't have screenshotted my browser tabs", Brit Hume

yeah

@TimStone you mean the one with the amazon page for a BDSM bikini?
Maybe not Amazon, but I'm not about to open the tweet with the image that showed it

Saw it discussed last night, but many articles about the on-air resignation and huffy walk-off-set of Chris Matthews. Here's one of many:
I'm firmly on the side of "good riddance"
In happier news (sarcasm):
Here's a more "newsy" article about Chris Matthews, the above link was mostly twitter quotes:
lol, pretty on-point satire from the New Yorker:
> “We believe that Tulsi would be an amazing President of the United States,” Harland Dorrinson, a spokesman for the other eight Gabbard supporters, said. “But we have regretfully come to the conclusion that this is not her time.”

3:08 PM
@BradC Does Hawaii vote today?

> Dorrinson had nothing but praise for the way Gabbard had conducted her campaign, noting, “By not appearing in the past two debates, she did much better than Mike Bloomberg.”
@MBraedley Yes and no. Mail-in balloting from March 1 through 28. In-person on April 4.

She has a month before her own state fully votes? Yeesh, she might pick up a delegate here or there today, but not enough to make a difference.

@MBraedley yeah. Her only "path" (if you want to call it that) is as a 3rd-party spoiler, although its unclear who's votes she'd be stealing from
Not sure she'll be a further factor in the primaries, even if she doesn't formally drop out. Her numbers are well under the 15% threshold needed to award any delegates in any state.

I'm actually somewhat surprised that Mayor Pete ended his campaign before today, as he definitely had a chance to pick up more delegates.

@MBraedley yeah I was a little surprised, too. With Pete and Amy also

3:22 PM
it makes sense, The Party has decided at this point

I mean, I think that helps Warren slightly as well, so I'm not against it, but didn't expect it

why risk a sanders nomination when you could put your weight behind joe
the iron law of institutions at work

3:49 PM
Just to put your mind at ease that the US has this Covid-19 thing under control:
> In what may be the first case of coronavirus in South Florida, a woman who recently returned home from Italy says she was told by doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital that she “likely” has COVID-19, but that they are unable to verify it because state and federal officials refused to conduct the necessary tests to confirm it.
Thread from a heath care worker in Seattle, concerned she is showing symptoms of Covid-19, wants to do the right thing and get tested. Here's how that went
Basically, she got the runaround from primary care doctors, clinics, and hospitals saying they don't have the test and can't administer it. The COVID-19 hotline said she "doesn't qualify" for testing:
> So. Who does qualify? Those who have been out of the country in the last 14 days, and those who have had contact with one of the few people who have been tested and come up positive. That's it.
> The only way I can get treated is if my symptoms get so bad I develop pneumonia or bronchitis, which is very likely in my case. Then I'll be in the ER and quarantined for several days while waiting for a test and for the results to come back.
> To sum up: this is not contained. No one knows what the fuck is happening. I can't work. WASH YOUR FUCKING HANDS.

4:08 PM
China couldn't contain it. What hope does the US have?

@Studoku None

The US was forewarned and is far less dense population wise

And china is, to my knowledge, severely limiting the spread
America just... isn't

> I am not an expert in immunology - I follow doctors for that.

But I did spend 9 years as a manager at a pizza place that paid better than average wages for food service.

And I am terrified of #COVID19.

Not because the virus is going to kill people, but because poverty might. /
> Y'all, all laws aside, nobody in the restaurant industry goes to the doctor when they're sick.

There are health code rules about what symptoms exclude you from work - you have to go to the doctor and get cleared, or be symptom free for 24 hours.

And they are *never* followed. /

4:10 PM
No wonder China won't let me immigrate

I won't quote the whole thing, but the upshot is that there are whole categories of workers in high-public-contact roles, preparing and serving your food, who exist in a culture where health care is anavailable/unattainable/not followed

Country must be full right now :(
Thoughts and prayers to the third world countries affected by this, such as the USA.

Also the chinese government, while being horribly oppressive and such, does get shit done
Mostly bad things to be sure

@Elva yeah, cause they can shut down the country by force. Can't (and shouldn't) do that here

But they're not america, where every 4/8 years a new idiot gets elected who can kick out everyone with experience

4:15 PM
> And fine dining restaurants are worse - food is handled 10x more and those cooks will work through anything. I worked with colds, bronchitis, and once maybe tonsillitis, who knows, I couldn’t go to the doctor.

@BradC It's ok if the dumbest 51% get evryone killed, right?
Pardon my meritocracy.

Are you saying the people in service jobs are dumb?

@Studoku yeah, that's not it. Society has failed them; they don't have the choice. Read through the linked thread above; living paycheck to paycheck with no health coverage, miss a shift you miss a paycheck. No paid sick days

I have nothing against serive workers
It's the popularity contest based system that has failed everyone

4:18 PM
and people who say things such as
"they can shut down the country by force. Can't (and shouldn't) do that here"

@Studoku The US government literally does not have to constitutional power or lawful ability to shut down the US the way the Chinese government has. That's a good thing.

@BradC Because you want to die of coronavirus, or because you want other people to?

I don't see how that conflicts with my view that capitalism has failed to provide a society for which all our citizens are well cared for

I didn't say it does. Though I am saying that you'

@Studoku .... because I don't want the US army taking over the streets??
Because I don't want to live in a totalitarian society

4:22 PM
I didn't say it does. Though I am saying that you're willing to sacrifice lives for your ideology.

@Studoku what the fuck are you talking about? I'd have to sacrifice freedom to ensure safety? You're creating a false binary

With all due respect, what the hell are you talking about

Ok, I know when a mod is talking to me

I'm just talking in my capacity as a guy who is here, I genuinely don't understand

Not going to respond with the same level of abuse and give you a reason to ban me

4:25 PM
O...kay then

That's certainly a stance

Clearly there are some other options than "allow a totalitarian military takeover of the US" vs "whistle happily while my countrymen die of Covid-19"
Those other options might include things like:

We do have ways of handling a public health crisis, yes

* Ramp way the fuck up on the testing in the US
* Agree to pay for testing (and treatment) so we don't encourage people to not get tested/treated
* Put people in charge who know what the heck they're doing, and aren't afraid to tell the truth if it makes little Donnie sad
and stuff like that

@BradC also that's what the police is for, they're about as well armed, maybe a year or two out of date and they haven't gotten any of this pesky training about diffusing situations and only shooting when needed

@BradC Except they really do. Maybe not full on martial law, but they do have the legal authority to impose quarantines (with force, if necessary) for the purposes of public safety.

Not with the ease or to the same degree as in china though

@Elva Exactly. China has its shit together.

4:49 PM
So, can't believe I need to say this, but regardless of whether you think the actions of the Chinese government (quarantines, field hospitals, etc) was more or less helpful in containing the spread of this virus, it is indisputable that their attempt to suppress accurate information about the origin, symptoms, spread, and threat of this virus have been incalculably harmful

Indisputable means you don't need me here, right? I'll leave and you can make your argument.

@Studoku I believe you're the only one that considers the abillity of a government to, essentially a whim, imprison an entire city a good thing

@Studoku That'd be great, thanks. I don't have the energy today to argue about whether totalitarianism is a virtue

@BradC yeah, I've not seen anyone even attempt to dispute this

I mean, maybe you can argue that the US federal government ought to be accurately conveying information to state and local officials and medical professionals, while still balancing that against the risk of inciting widespread public panic? But that doesn't sound like your argument at all.
Ah, my hometown:

5:01 PM
Circle circle jerk, hey!
ok, I'm bored
cya

Bye! :)

That's like arguing with someone about the current (unsettled) state of LGBT discrimination law, then in the process discovering that they are totes ok with businesses discriminating based on race and sex (much more settled matters)
And at that point you're like... the rest of this discussion is suddenly moot. No, unfettered capitalism isn't a magic elixir that will fix everything
(An experience I've had several times, annoyingly)
"Like, why did we even need the civil rights act, man?"

@Unionhawk This is a wonderful gif, thank you xD

I'm in a Super Tuesday state. I was planning to vote for Warren, but at this point it seems like she has very little chance of winning

@murgatroid99 Please vote for who you want to win. Vote warren if you'd prefer her as President
Don't over-pundit yourself this early in the game
Plenty of chance for punditry in the general

idk at this point it seems that the game is to beat joe

Warren would be electable if people that like what she stands for would just vote for her

I'm not really clear on whether there are spoiler effects in the primary. If I vote for Warren instead of Sanders, does that make it more likely for Biden to beat Sanders?

7:55 PM
I'm voting for her, in next week's MO primary
@murgatroid99 Impossible to tell at this point. In the primary, vote for who you want to see as president
@murgatroid99 I think if less people asked themselves this question, she'd have a stronger chance of actually being the nominee. Actually, she does have a chance even now, despite the (consults thesaurus) political sideline commentary she's been subjected to lately

shrug The centrist wing has combined their forces. Why shouldn't we? That's where I'm at

@Unionhawk So great! Encourage Bernie voters to switch to Warren!

Unless I'm misunderstanding though, voting Warren does not increase Joe's chances of getting a 1st ballot win
What happens after that is a free-for-all though
So it's complicated

But voting Warren (if you truly prefer her), even if she doesn't come in the leader, still grants her leverage in the convention via all her won delegates
For her plan and her vision, if nothing else
@Unionhawk I think this is correct? That Biden, by himself, would need 50%+1, and your vote for Warren or Bernie wouldn't change Biden's percentage

I wish we could just have ranked choice voting

8:03 PM
Yeah
This whole thing is dumb

yep. Ranked choice, no caucuses, state primary order is randomized each 4 years
So Iowa doesn't always go first

We most likely wouldn't even be talking about pete being out if it were ranked he could just stay in and feed his ego

@Unionhawk probably, depending on how exactly the rank-choice voting works. I mean, would your ranked choices carry all the way through? (Meaning, if you voted "Gary, then Sally", but Gary didn't drop out until 2 months after your state primary, would the second choice kick in then?) Or, would the ranked choice voting only apply within the window of each state's primary? (Same situation, but your second place Sally vote only matters if Gary doesn't reach viability in your state?)

Well, ideally we'd do national ranked choice at once none of this one state at a time nonsense

@Unionhawk no, I actually think a single one-day primary isn't a good idea; you'd just be nationalizing all the advertising and stuff.
Having a rolling primary is what makes it important for candidates to get on the ground in each (upcoming) state
We just shouldn't have Iowa go first every year
Regarding Warren:

8:12 PM
Anyway, the calculus for me is pretty easy with the system we're in, Sanders probably needs a majority, not just a plurality, to win, and anything less will probably hand the thing to Joe knowing the DNC.

@Unionhawk Well, like I said, I think that's over-thinking it at this point, but you do what you think is best

I mean that's just looking at what the polling and history suggests

@Unionhawk but your vote could just as easily throw Warren from 14.9% to 15.0%, making her viable in your state

I'm not particularly interested in tautological analyses like "if more people vote for warren then she will win"

Tim
@murgatroid99 please vote for Bernie. He has all the plans that Liz has and his are more concrete and he has more
Plus Bernie is more coherent
Bernie does not attack friends sharing the same ideology
He stands with people and doesn't not sell himself to elites
No other candidates are comparable, as far as I know

8:24 PM
@Tim Look, there are a lot of reasons people like Bernie, but to say he has MORE and MORE CONCRETE plans?? That's pretty laughably false. I mean, vote for who you want, but don't pretend I'm stupid

Tim
Consider how long did it take Liz to figure out how to pay M4A
Then backed off from M4A with a two phase transition plan, which will likely to be killed in the first stage
When the plan reaches the congress, there will more or less be some compromise

Sorry, I'm don't have time to go point by point, I'll just simply say that they both have plans for how to get from here to there, and both of them involve several steps. He's no purist

Tim
But if compromise at the beginning, you will compromise even more

And I trust her to get more done.

Tim
Bernie is not a saint
I absolutely hope there will be more candidates similar to him
Liz is not comparable

8:28 PM
@Tim Exactly. She's head and shoulders above him

Tim
I am afraid she has some credibility problem

@Tim Some have tried to paint her that way, yes. I don't believe the concerns have any merit. There are ways you can paint Bernie with inaccurate labels, too.

I'm definitely wishing for ranked choice with a single national vote date right now as well.

8:48 PM
> Coronavirus: Student in quarantine after classmates shook hands with Mike Pence
@Tim The whole reason why she's a good candidate is because the banking industry has a credibility problem. She led the CFPB back when it was actually a good agency.

@Yuuki yep. The banks were so worried she would actually be able to protect consumers effectively that they convinced the Obama administration to not appoint her as head of that agency (that she created single-handedly)
So she ran for Senate instead
and now, this week in Trump authoritiarianism
These suits have zero merit, but are an attempt to chill the freedom of the press

Okay, so it looks like the student's mother worked with a patient that tested positive for coronavirus.
Not that Pence's propensity for blowing his nose on his hands and then immediately doing handshakes got someone else in quarantine.
> Colonel Christina Bowman, executive director of schools at SMA, said: “We have been in touch with the Pentagon, so we assured them that particular cadet was not present for that occasion.” Mr Pence’s press secretary, Katie Miller, stresses in a tweet that the vice president did not meet or come into contact with the student.
but he did come in contact with the student's classmates
man, incubation periods are fun

@Yuuki I read it more as "the Vice President, who heads the task force in charge of the government's response to the viral epidemic, engaged in activity that could have plausibly exposed himself to the virus"
Yeah, they're saying Covid-19 has, like a 14-day incubation period? Which sound long?

I remember reading a news piece about how Trump is an extreme germophobe, imagine Pence not being allowed in the White House now.

@Yuuki Lol. Maybe this'll work toward his (rumored) choosing of a different VP candidate at the GOP convention
In more Trump administration authoritarianism:

> 1. has coronavirus?
> 2. bud light, miller, or corona?
> 3. recently stared at the atmosphere of the sun?

> Like the old questionnaire, the new form asks candidates whether they have ever appeared in the media. But now, applicants are asked specifically whether they have "ever appeared in the media to comment on 'Candidate Trump, President Trump or other personnel or policies of the Trump administration.' "
> The new questionnaire also asks applicants to describe their "political evolution" and to list "thinkers, authors, books, or political leaders" who have "influenced you and led you to your current beliefs."
> Candidates applying to join President Donald Trump's administration will now have to explain what part of Trump's campaign message "most appealed" to them and why.

@BradC I credit a lot of my thinking on current beliefs to the German writer, Georg Ohm.

@Yuuki helped you develop your thinking on resistance?

@BradC And re-volting.
