12:00 AM
@TimStone hahahaha

@Frank I'm going to assume that they suspected them of being terrorists and funneling the money to ISIS or something but then found out it was just non-terrorism fraud and said "Well, why not?" of which there are many answers why not but

@TimStone The DOJ isn't in the habit of giving anyone a break. It would give them a bad name!

Still not sure if I'm more shocked by the VitaCoco piss jug or the horrible Matt Walsh abortion law take, just what an absurd day online

@TimStone coming from Trump's "my people" i bet. maybe Bolton too i'd bet
@TimStone "there's this guy who blocked me on twitter when i tried to point out to him that he was lying and Americans are paying for the tariffs he imposed on China"

12:25 AM
Two full pardons granted by @POTUS just announced by @WhiteHouse via @PressSec office.

Oh sweet Jesus

Unbelievably dumb day

1:25 AM
@TimStone surprised it wasn't Manafort

2:22 AM
OH GOD I SAW THE MATT WALSH TAKE
wtf
just wtf

Okay, but riddle me this, if they're evidence and the evidence gets destroyed by police and police are the law then 🤔🤔🤔
Very impressive that the President managed to top that by pardoning Conrad Black

3:06 AM
Hey @jack how come Twitter’s “moment” quotes all the snarky leftists making fun of my comments, but doesn’t include my tweets in response explaining the real point that NATIONS like China have already developed & tested weapons to destroy satellites? https://twitter.com/i/moments/1128794276677029888
lmao, sure, just lean into it buddy

@TimStone so are they defending against pirates or against nation states?

Yes
But yeah I think if you have to explain your "real point" because the point you actually made is something totally different and dumb maybe uhhh
The problem is on you?
idk
Unclear what interest China has in destroying our satellites if we don't have a big brained president antagonizing them with horrible trade policy but

@TimStone because China aren't pirates unless they became Tortuga

lol

Ivan Milat, the 74-year-old serial killer serving seven consecutive life sentences for murdering backpackers, has been diagnosed with cancer. http://bit.ly/2JmQ3vB
seems like [INSERT UNDERWORLD OF YOUR FAITH] doesn't want to wait him to serve one life sentence
Jacinda Ardern's 'Christchurch Call' to stamp out violent extremist content on the internet has been signed by world leaders and tech companies in Paris, but the US said it would not endorse the initiative. https://t.co/M7tpcB2c6I
> The White House said on Wednesday it supported the Christchurch Call's aims but was "not in a position to join", citing the need for freedom of speech.
ummmmm, does the US have an actual concern about the Christchurch Call on the freedom of speak beyond "we think extremist content is freedom of speech too"
because that's sorta what it sounds like
maybe their position is currently "we don't have the power to name opposing opinions fake news as extremist content"

@Memor-X Freedom of speech is a VERY complicated and touchy subject in the USA. It was literally the first thing added to the constitution and has been refined and affirmed a lot of times in various courts

2 hours later…
9:09 AM
@Memor-X that is essentially the legal status from my understanding
As in, something like unless it is literally calling for a specific person or group of people to be harmed it's legal?

In the United States, freedom of speech and expression is strongly protected from government restrictions by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, many state constitutions, and state and federal laws. The Supreme Court of the United States has recognized several categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection by the First Amendment and has recognized that governments may enact reasonable time, place, or manner restrictions on speech. The First Amendment's constitutional right of free speech, which is applicable to state and local governments under the incorporation...

Unless you're going to point at some specific bit of it that isn't really a helpful addition =p

9:25 AM
@Kevin The first paragraph shows most of the exemptions from 1A rights. I'm not a constitutional lawyer (I don't think any of us are), but there doesn't seem to be an exemption for the display of violence

I can't see that in the first paragraph? Which paragraph are you talking about

> Categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection include obscenity, fraud, child pornography, speech integral to illegal conduct, speech that incites imminent lawless action, and regulation of commercial speech.Within these limited areas, other limitations on free speech balance rights to free speech and other rights, such as copyright, protection from imminent or potential violence against particular persons, slander, and communications while a person is in prison.

Ah, the third paragraph

Note: that's paraphrased since the actual paragraph is too long for this chat
Yeah, misspoke. I meant the summary

'imminent lawless action' seems like I was basically right?

9:32 AM
@Kevin yup

2 hours later…
12:22 PM
I like "speech integral to illegal conduct" because like: that's v arbitrary what does that mean
(does it mean criminal anarchy is a valid exception? wait no that's "incites lawlessness")
you are allowed to say whatever you want as long as you don't challenge power

@Unionhawk It can be interpreted simply as "fighting words" and nothing more. Importantly, hate speech doesn't actually fall within this category most of the time.

@Memor-X they also agree with the aims of the shooter but think those goals should be pursued through the political process.
and state violence

12:57 PM
@Wipqozn huh. I'm not sure how I feel about this, as someone who flies regularly on both.

@ToxicFrog I've only flown once in my life, and I was young.

Air Canada in exclusive talks to buy Air Transat
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/air-canada-transat-1.5138180
Earlier article was mistaken

1:39 PM
@Unionhawk it can also be interpreted to talking people into scams, that is it's still allowable to make laws that say scamming people is illegal even when you're only at the 'talky' bit of getting people to fall for the scam

2:05 PM
@Wipqozn I flew a lot as a kid because my dad's business travel racked up a lot of air miles, and then a bunch as an adult because business travel + family and partners in other countries.
And it's usually on Air Canada or Air Transat.

@Memor-X I don't have one of those :P

> The block is significant as previously China only blocked the Chinese language version of the site.

> On Friday (May 10), detectives spoke with Bishop’s son’s father, and the man said the boy is no longer with her because ‘she is too violent’.
At least the kid isn't with her any more
> After asking her to be nicer to her fellow passengers, the arrest report said Bishop pushed the man ‘with enough force that he never touched any of the steps’ on the bus.
I hope the kid is young enough he doesn't really understand what happened, since I imagine watching your mother murder someone in front of you would be traumatizing.

5:36 PM
@Unionhawk lmao
The President's policy is based on Twitter likes

5:59 PM
wtf is wrong with these people's brains?
"Hahah yes I am bored being mayor of an iconic city let me run for President just for kicks"
Imagine running for office and having a laundry list of unsolved problems and deciding doing anything about them is unfulfilling

6:13 PM
Cool, cool
To win the trade war we've got to prop up checks notes a Brazilian political corruption front company

6:58 PM
So, is twitter no longer auto-expanding? Or is that just in my browser?

yeah twitter machine broken

boo. I'll have to take the extra 7 seconds to make well-formed links. totally. unusable.
Clickbait title, but I strongly agree with the content of the video.
Get it done, House Democrats; that's why we put you there

@BradC Not just you

So, fun fact: twitter one boxing doesn't actually happen automatically. It requires mod intervention. @Ash was just manually and instantly making all tweets one box before. Now you're just stuck with @TimStone and I, and we're really lazy.

@Wipqozn seems entirely plausible

7:11 PM
@Wipqozn They just got made room owner yesterday! Change is bad!

user15026
@Wipqozn I guess you are just revealing all my secrets now that I'm not a diamond. Booo, turtle. Boooooo.

:50318733 Oof you are exactly right, I'm sorry @Ash. I apologize.

user15026
No worries :)

:)
@Wipqozn Thank you for the reminder!
@Ash Where did you retire from?

@Ash Pretty much yeah

@Ash Thanks for your service.

It was a good 5 years!

@Ash Have you met any SO friends in real life?

Wait, I thought you were created from the diamonds at the creation of the universe?

user15026
(I am just finding that my meatspace life is...exploding. Like I went from "oh hey wonder if there are Baha'is in my area" 3 months ago to being the social media coordinator for my local LSA/community)

7:28 PM
@puzzlepiece87 I married one :P

user15026
(I've met a small handful, and yeah, met my husband here :P)

@Ash tbh I chuckled at that question because of this
I've met @Frank and @MBraedley in RL.

@Wipqozn There's photographic evidence, even

@MBraedley Yeah it's like we're all real people instead of sock puppets of @Ash

user15026
Oh, I just let you believe that ;)

user15026
7:36 PM
The simulation is very convincing.

@Ash Oh lol, I didn't know that. Glad you have had such a great experience with SO and made some lifelong relationships :)

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 grins Yeah, it's been pretty good to me.

So.... there is a lot here I agree with, from his characterization of Comey's distasterous press conference and letter before the election, to his defense of the Russia investigation as well founded
But I have ZERO confidence in this statement:
> As acting Attorney General, it was my responsibility to make sure that the Department of Justice would conduct an independent investigation; complete it expeditiously; hold perpetrators accountable if warranted; and work with partner agencies to counter foreign agents and deter crimes.
> We achieved those goals.
> As a result, our nation is safer, elections are more secure, and citizens are better informed about covert foreign influence schemes.
Maybe its true, because (unbeknownst to us) there is some crack FBI hacking team that has taken down a couple of more Russian hacking operations, but we have ZERO reason to think that "our nation is safer" and "elections are more secure".
I see no reason at all to believe that, in fact, based on the actions of this administration, I believe the opposite is true.
Now maybe Rosenstein was saying this in a very narrow sense; that one less Russian hacking operation (as exposed by Mueller's indictments) is better than it continuing to operate. If so, I guess. But overall, I'd say "heck no"
> While Trump is selling this immigration plan in an attempt to curb illegal immigration, it doesn’t really do anything to address it. The plan would drastically reduce the number of family-based visas and green cards that allow spouses and children to live in the United States. It would also impose educational requirements such as English language proficiency and a civics test, and prioritize immigrants with a higher educational background through a points-based system.
> The diversity visa lottery program, which offers green cards to citizens from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States, would be eliminated.

lol Roy Moore says the judge in his lawsuit against SBC should recuse himself and the case be retried because he didn't refer to Roy Moore as the thing he isn't
Felix Sater supposedly provided the government Osama Bin Laden's phone number which is confusing to begin with but also raises some important questions about timing because uhhhh??
Ban against Huawei & co from buying components and such from US companies without government approval

Chelsea Manning has been jailed again for refusing to cooperate with the grand jury
Her objection seems to be with the grand jury process generally? Which like, okay, but :/

Gross

> For the second time in as many months, Congress convened a hearing on the rise of white supremacist violence, in an apparent bid to brainstorm solutions. But for the second time, Congress derailed its own hearing by inviting a bad-faith witness who denied that hate and white supremacy pose a threat at all.

> t’s unclear why Congress would need a dissenting opinion during a hearing titled “Confronting White Supremacy: The Consequences of Inaction” and predicated on the notion that extremist violence is indeed a problem.
I'm going to say it's because most of the GOP support them

9:27 PM
RIP I.M. Pei
The Daily Caller is claiming that Trump plans on using the Insurrection Act powers to evict illegal immigrants from the entirety of the country?
Which you know, seems extremely impractical and insane, but also using the Civil War law to do white supremacy seems entirely on point

9:48 PM
@TimStone sTaRt WiTh Ur GoLf CoUrSe, or better yet just build an platform for yourself, declare it Trumpistan, and keep immigrants off of it.

Former Halifax transit worker receives record $593K award in harassment case cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
> A Nova Scotia human rights board of inquiry has handed down an award of nearly $600,000 to a former Metro Transit bus garage worker after finding he was the victim of racial harassment and discrimination by management and co-workers.
> Y.Z., who is white, is married to a black woman. He told the inquiry his marriage made him the focus of racial taunting.
> In 2007, the former Metro Transit worker attempted suicide and since then has been "largely housebound" due to his fear of encountering employees from the bus garage.
> Connors also drew attention to recent racial tension at the bus garage. According to a 2015 workplace survey, 61 per cent of employees at the Ilsley Avenue facility reported dissatisfaction on being treated with respect and consideration, and "bullying, racism, [and] intimidation" were examples of disrespect they experienced.
