@GodEmperorDune I said good reason
The latest from Houston Police Watch Command A total of 3 suspects in a residence. One of them is dead. Two still inside. HPD was serving a warrant at the home. Five officers shot and transported to the hospital.
@TimStone something something good guy with a gun
BuzzFeed's director of quizzes, who was laid off: http://www.fluxblog.org/2019/01/how-laid-off-are-you/
Not that Stack Exchange is completely dissimilar in this regard but I feel like I actually get value out of content here so while I guess people could really, really like quizzes maybe also don't provide labour for free
#yourtimeisvaluable or whatever
#gigEconomyWheee
also looking forward to buzzfeed crashing and burning once QuizTeen graduates and doesn't have as much time to provide free quizzes
Seconds into Howard Schultz’s remarks here at Barnes & Noble in Manhattan, a heckler yells: “Don’t help elect Trump. You egotistical billionaire asshole.”
00:10
or just emails buzzfeed and asks for a tremendous salary
@TimStone hell yeah
heckler 2020
He gets taken out by security. Also says “go back to getting ratioed on Twitter!”
lol
i'm gonna be so proud for this heckler and the sup bootlickers guy to combine forces on a 2020 ticket
On @NY1: 53 y/o housekeeper trapped in billionaire's townhouse elevator for 3 days. Rich UES neighbor: "humans can last 72hrs w/o water... what she went thru isnt anywhere close to human endurance, but its beyond what we're used to be bc we've lost touch w our... strength." 🤯 https://t.co/JP4TgIKh5Y
I think my face is now stuck in "WTAF?" pose
The real shocking thing here is that the guy isn't Jack
A Trump insider got a board position right after the US lifted sanctions on a Russian company https://qz.com/1535650/ via @qz
Oh hm weird
over the weekend my colleagues & I spent 48hrs obsessing over a way to help our colleagues who just lost their jobs get treated fairly & get paid out PTO they’d earned working for BuzzFeed. 585 people who work for our company said they agreed. Today, our CEO said he did too ✊🏽
00:27
@TimStone so buzzfeed is paying out the PTO for all the people they fired? couldn't the company have done that in the first place if the CEO wanted to do so?
Yeah but he didn't want to do so until the remaining staff told him to pound sand
grats for eventually not being so much of an asshole, i guess
Well, correction, I'm sure he still doesn't want to do so
@GodEmperorDune this is where the 585 number came in
But you know
00:29
buzzfeed just unionize
do you like our new posters? we made them special for today’s bargaining session https://t.co/nFRqHHJ9vz
I'm actually headed to the centrist rally, i.e. Howard Schultz's book event at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square tonight. Who exactly is attending this sold-out event? I will find out. https://twitter.com/InternetHippo/status/881161169469403137
oh god
> GO BACK TO DAVOS
lol
Howard Schultz now addressing income inequality: “The inequality is real and must be addressed, but not in a punitive way. What is required is leadership." “We can’t continue to add onto the debt. We can’t continue to add onto the inequality.”
Oh, I forgot to post the video, and I've lost the link now
@Unionhawk uhhh but what if you define "anything that rich people have to do" as being punitive
00:35
But even the mild booing of the heckler was super-centrist
also not sure how government debt is related to income inequality except for that money is involved
@GodEmperorDune it's why actually what we need is to cut social security or some shit
income inequality is when you can only afford 6 boats and not the betsy devos 7th
@TimStone and buzzfeed is laying off more reporters in other countries today

I love spreading out my layoffs over the course of an entire week to maximize stress
00:42
@TimStone Cool, cool. Funnily enough in college my one friend had this happen where calling her would pick up before she actually picked up. No idea what was going on there
@TimStone way to snipe my feed
lol, in my defense I got it from a retweet of a tweet which quote-tweeted it
Ending the estate tax would give a tax break of up to: - $63.6B for the Walton family, the owners of Walmart - $39.1B for the Koch brothers - $27.8B for the Mars candy bar family - $13.4B for the Cox cable family - $0 for more than 99.8% of Americans https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2019/01/28/top-gop-senators-propose-repealing-estate-tax-which-is-expected-be-paid-by-fewer-than-americans-year/?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.38d860d50dd6
@TimStone sure, sure
"I will absolutely not run as a Democrat, I am a centrist independent 4 lyf"
@TimStone bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Schultz asked about @AOC advisor saying existence of billionaires is "failure of the system." Schultz: "It's so un-American to think that way…I think there is a problem that she has identified. But I think the way she’s going about it, unfortunately, she is a bit misinformed."
love to ignore all the privilege that i have
00:56
Not only that
But pointing it out is unamerican
@GodEmperorDune I don't know enough about him (see also: I know literally nothing), but even if he literally came from nothing that still doesn't somehow justify other people living on the street starving in the freezing cold just so he can a 10th yacht
@Wipqozn you cannot get to a billion dollars without some level of privilege
#ChangeMyMind
workers, billionaire
01:16
Asked if Dems could do anything to change his mind, Schultz replies: "No" "I don’t think their views represent the majority of Americans ... I don’t think we want a 70 percent income tax in America (???), and I certainly don't think we can afford the things they're suggesting"
When you've got your finger on the pulse of the american people
howard we're going to take all your money so nobody has to die thinking about whether they can afford a fucking ambulance or not
I like the stories about him giving people absurdly low-valued Starbucks gift cards
@Unionhawk i love how AOC's 70% marginal rate income tax is tanking for elizabeth warren's 2% wealth tax
@TimStone i like the way you think, here is a gift card for 2 cents, geddit?
He had like a whole bunch of $3.50 cards made when he bought the Sonics apparently and you can't even put that low of a balance on the card usually
Like why not just go $5? lol
Or do nothing!
Centrist niceties are just awkward af
also we is just people like howard
Here
"all my buddies at davos/the yacht club/the hedge fund are saying the same thing"
01:26
ow my brain
wait so putin is going to confiscate your guns but only with teams of exactly 29 men?
or is trump gonna do this?
wtf is cucker talking about?
Yeah I'm also confused here because the FBI works for Trump so if Trump is Russia then uhh
Okay? Then?
wow i finally agree with trump on something, he doesn't want howard schultz to run either
Look he has a lot of eager supporters like himself and only himself
wow he even stole hillary's forward thing
01:32
(I think you retweeted it but it's still funny)
yeah wasn't sure if it met the bar for the room
i have a new place to post dunks and it is great
I guess it generally doesn't but it ties in here so we're making it work
Schultz says he would ask tech companies to "solve border security"
There are two types of people: those who are honest and open about their political ideology, and those who try to convince themselves and others that their political, ideological positions are just common-sensical "doing what works" pragmatism.
throws a table
@TimStone ARE YOU GJDKGSHKJDHGKJSBDKJFHD
goddamit
01:34
Jan 25 at 23:14, by Unionhawk
I'd cc someone but that may be a code of conduct violation so I won't
i prefer the techbro who is "UBI but don't overlap with govt benefits" at least it is closer to workable (but seriously just do UBI for everyone and don't let there be games for eligibility)
protip: people on govt benefits today need the UBI more than most
and they will spend it faster and boost ur capitalisms

@TimStone gotta paperclips game it
@GodEmperorDune this is just the democratic line
Tbf
01:39
still terrible
tech is not magically free from bias or making shitty situations worse
Also "solve border security" is not a thing that needs to be done
i mean i'm for fully open borders but i can see how that isn't a mainstream position
i guess this means i solved it already, please give me the wall monies now, thanks
Yeah you literally don't have to do anything actually, no action is more solved than fuckin, more drones or whatever
Stop pouring out water stop prosecuting people who are against more people dying for stopping people from dying
Bam
Solved
Not fully
But solved enough
upon further reflection, i will split the border solving prize money with @uni
@TimStone SOLVE BORDER SECURITY WITH BLOCKCHAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
01:52
@Memor-X pretty sure this was already a talk at Davos

Can't wait for the Q take on Waming
@Unionhawk sighs
03:12
@TimStone this was a known outcome
@TimStone a long winded version of XKCD
Now we know which ones voted no out of "no fuck you it's the shutdown" last time
BuzzFeed will axe more than half of its workers in Australia, with 25 jobs to go as part of a broader cost-cutting exercise http://bit.ly/2RVm2I7
TIL that's BuzzFeed employees people in Australia
and which ones voted no or abstain out of "I'm running for president" at most cynical
03:29
@TimStone every damn time it gets cold
@Unionhawk what bill is this?
The "You Must Be Nice To Israel" one
@GodEmperorDune it's a lot of stuff but it includes "states can blacklist companies doing BDS no 1a infringement intended"
@Unionhawk damn i am impressed feinstein voted no
Kaine as no too
What the fuck is this mix
Brown, Gilibrand, Sanders, Warren, Booker, and Harris are obvious
welcome to the clown car baby

Kamala Harris's comments of "using the stick" to make poor families behave, or be arrested, is deeply disturbing. This is much worse than Clinton's "super predator" comments, because Harris's conviction belies a far more deeply held political philosophy. https://t.co/WhFkO4HOE4

Joshua Tree national park 'may take 300 years to recover' from shutdown https://trib.al/J82TIQM
Thanks trump and cocaine Mitch
@GodEmperorDune Don't forget to thank those bozos who thought "hey, there are no park rangers here, let's do crazy-scale vandalism since who's going to stop us?"
Like, if your first instinct when visiting a natural park without rangers is "this really old tree is blocking my view, let's cut it down", then you shouldn't even be visiting natural parks...
Blame Trump and Mitch McConnell all you want, but there's still plenty of blame to place on those that blatantly want to disrespect nature and vandalise property and take the first possible opportunity to do so
09:57
@Nzall shouldn't even be visiting artificial parks, just stay in your home
10:26
Welcome to the latest Brexit hot take: “It would do the country good to go without food” https://t.co/U2vT1SENvz
Do you agree that it would do the UK good to go without food?
@Nzall We won't go without food, we'll go without fresh food.
We have plenty of stockpiles of non-perishable food, but there's no way to stockpile e.g. salad and soft fruit.
Going without food will make us appreciate what we had. Which, to be clear, was food.
So you won't die of starvation, but you will die of scurvy. Got it

Colombia's foreign minister says his government doesn't know why U.S. national security adviser John Bolton had "5,000 troops to Colombia" written on a notepad he held during a news conference announcing new Venezuela sanctions https://cbsn.ws/2RTGRUr
🤷🏼‍♂️
@TimStone doesn't Colombia share a border with Venezuela?
@Memor-X Yup, and most of the border is farmland, which is ideal for mass troop movements
14:05
@Nzall either it's a brilliant move to "leak" this to make the president of a crumbling government start getting paranoid about a US attack from a neighbour or this is sheer incompetence in leaking one of your plans like this
or it's all fake and he just walked out with a blank notepad to look important and dude this is the internet how do you not think that someone is going add something to that
@Memor-X It's real though. Many major news outlets are reporting on it, including Japan Times, CNN, Telegraph,...
14:22
I did make a Skeptics question, but then I thought "this is a news conference attended by hundreds of journalists, how would they fabricate something like this?"
14:41
The Trump administration says the federal workers who essentially forced an end to the government shutdown with a sickout will not receive back pay. https://m.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2019/01/how-trump-administration-handling-pay-and-benefits-shutdown-impacted-feds/154450/
@TimStone I'm sure those workers will find a work around, like "If you won't dock me a sick day, then dock me a vacation day."
15:17
@MBraedley Its just as likely many of those workers will find a workaround like "go work for a private employer".
@BradC Doesn't necessarily solve their back pay problems, though.
@MBraedley nope, just their future pay problems.
15:48
@TimStone way to be a jerk OPM
My latest: Some DEMS want to turn the tables on @AOC, trying to plot a primary challenge against the rising Democratic star and social-media sensation https://thehill.com/homenews/house/427364-some-dems-float-idea-of-primary-challenge-for-ocasio-cortez
Lol they can want to, I doubt it will happen
hi im mike bloomberg vote for me for ny-14
You’re going to find someone to the left of AOC with better charisma?
@GodEmperorDune Oh, I thought this was a "centrist" challenge.
no they're looking for someone to the right
wait
right?
The article doesn't really talk about political ideology.
It seems more like there were some rumors floating that AOC and a grass-roots group were planning on unseating a current Democratic Black Caucus representative.
15:59
I assume given that AOC is one of the most leftist politicians in the house right now, they want to replace her with someone a bit closer to the rest of the party
If I'm to take this article at face value, it's not about political ideology really.
If you believe that then I think Jared Kushner has a building to sell you
@Unionhawk If it's Trump Tower, I'd love to buy it so I can demolish it
If you think that everyone is always about political ideology only and has no interest in protecting their in-groups, then I think Kushner already sold you that building.
"protecting their in-groups" is ideological
even if it is just iron law of institutions too
@Nzall 666 Fifth, though it apparently sold finally in August
16:03
Lol if they are going to try to replace AOC with a centrist, good luck
they've got the money but we have the people
AOC is perhaps the best democrat at social media right now, I dunno why they’d want to give that up
It’s not like she’ll stop tweeting once out of office
Gotta love those "centrists" who are willing to turn on a dime against progressive Democrats but "we need to come to the table and compromise" with far-right hucksters.
whispers It's because they're sociopaths beholden to the donor class
the name of this trash can is ideology (and class interests)
16:14
I know we dunked on Schultz plenty already but come on
.@HowardSchultz on @KamalaHarris' healthcare comments last night: "Senator Harris...saying she wanted to abolish the insurance industry. That's not correct. That's not American. What's next? What industry are we gonna abolish next, the coffee industry?" https://www.cbsnews.com/news/howard-schultz-former-starbucks-ceo-on-an-independent-2020-run-i-think-i-can-beat-the-system/
1. That's a huge tell dude
2. Yes, absolutely. We are tearing down all the Starbucks and turning them into clinics. Done deal
Actually it is correct
NEXT
But imagine making a joke that belies your actual concern, threats to your business interests
He somehow found a level beyond access to affordable healthcare
"Everyone should have the right to access quality healthcare"
or something to that effect
@TimStone "What industry are we gonna abolish next, slavery?" - Howard Schultz, 170 years ago
Then again, no.
I'm glad we're going to have fun with Howard, it's better than getting extremely pissed off at the former california attorney general's campaign speeches from that time
16:18
Slavery and health insurance are at least somewhat more related than health insurance and coffee, I think.
Baltimore DA Marilyn Mosby to cease all marijuana prosecutions. "If you ask that mom whose son was killed where she would rather us spend our time... on solving that murder or prosecuting marijuana laws — it’s a no-brainer." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/29/us/baltimore-marijuana-possession.html
> "Fox & Friends" host hits Kushner: He "hurt" Trump's "first two years" by blocking Christie from admin
It's pretty funny because this is absolutely true and also a sick burn that Christie is a better option than the people there
The guy that shut down the beaches and then went on those same beaches being the most competent one in the room, whew
@TimStone Yes, the ultimate goal is to replace the (for profit) health insurance industry with a larger, single, (not for profit) government-run single-payer.
I think it is responsible to acknowledge that this is a big deal; and will take time, and expertise, and will be difficult to do right.
it is actually unamerican to oppose my class interests - howard 2020
But there is a rhetorical approach on single-payer healthcare that I am dearly hoping that some of the 2020 candidates take:
(Everyone rightly focuses on stories about those who can't get any or enough health care; those should continue to be an important part of the story)
But what about focusing on how this will save money? (Yes, you have to divert money that both individuals and corporations now put into health insurance premiums and other out-of-pocket costs. But at the end of the day, both businesses and individuals will save money)
16:33
I think it is important to do both
Because while this is Correct just from a pure "you don't have to pay Cigna's shareholders anymore" standpoint
it is more importantly Right, morally speaking
What about focusing on how good this will be for small and independent businesses? How many more people would venture out and start businesses if they knew they wouldn't lose coverage?
There is that too yeah, "people say an important part of staying in their current job is their healthcare," "actually that sucks"
What about how good this will be for entire professions full of independent and contract workers (authors, adjust professors, artists, etc)?
@Unionhawk Exactly! How many people would choose a job they'd love more, if healthcare wasn't such a big part of the calculation?
Or take a year off to write a novel
Or stay home with their kids
Or take care of their elderly parents
This is the ultimate pro-business plan
Employers wouldn't have to manage (educate/negotiate/etc) their employee health care plans.
@GodEmperorDune skeptics.stackexchange.com did Howard Schultz come from the projects
How many people might go back to school if they knew they wouldn't lose coverage? Or take time off to tour the country?
16:41
@BradC it's a bit odd that the discussion in the US focuses on a single provide. You can have healthcare for everyone with multiple providers inside a common framework. Germany has a rather weird system, and parts of it are certainly not something to copy, but we have several different public insurance companies and private ones.
@MadScientist The idea is that when there is one buyer representing 300m people, the negotiating power of that buyer goes up
@MadScientist Yeah, there are somewhat different models, even among current talking points ("Medicare for all" isn't exactly the same as "single-payer", for example)
That's currently the case with medicare, every other insurance company pays like medicare+20%, depending, all negotiated per company
@GodEmperorDune Out of curiosity where is this place?
I think the German public health insurers negotiate together, but I'm not sure how it works
16:44
I can also see one morphing into the other; if the government option is better (because it scales based on income, for example), then it naturally replaces private plans over time, except for special niches
(Even moreso if our tax money goes into the plan no matter what, and we are faced with a "free" (already paid by my taxes) plan vs an out-of-pocket plan)
The big decision is to decide that everyone gets healthcare. You have to decide how much people have to pay for it, and the government has to pay it for everyone that can't afford it. But after that there are many ways to implement the details
And also the base level of healthcare that everyone gets.
public healthcare here costs 7.3% of your income up to ~4500 EUR per month. And your employer pays the same amount additionally.
@puzzlepiece87 It seems like his every criticism is word-for-word "that's not American".
As if American values were set in stone.
I think public opinion and momentum are on the side of some version of a public plan. None of the usual objections seem to be all that persuasive any more:
"But some people have to wait in Canada!" "Perhaps, but people in the US are literally dying right now."
16:57
the biggest danger is a bad implementation of a reasonable idea. You're distributing a shitload of money in a public healthcare system
"But it would be expensive." "Actually, no, it would save money. And nobody would go bankrupt for medical reasons. And nobody would have to decide between their medicine and their electric bill"
"But it would be hard!" "Yep, it would. So let's get started."
@MadScientist honestly even an incredibly wasteful implementation would probably be an improvement, since right now US healthcare is, IIRC, the most expensive in the world per capita by a large margin
Yep
Per procedure too, typically
(while also producing mediocre results)
like, even for fairly standard procedures across the entire world like an MRI
we spend more for worse health outcomes
17:00
@MBraedley No, you can't take vacation during those situations.
@ToxicFrog it's probably hard not to beat the current system in price, but I'm more imagining a gigantic bureaucratic mess collapsing onto itself when the system is launched. That's a worst-case scenario, of course

@BradC B-b-b-but he said he wouldn't talk about the crimes!!!
Yeah I'm not sure if there are like....people who believe they actually went forward with that the last time and won, or something?
Because it seems like a dumb thing to keep saying when you know they're not going to follow through with the lawsuit

@puzzlepiece87 I thought you were in Chicago not Alabama.
@Yuuki Missouri but I was in Chicago that weekend and found someone who needed serious medical help but couldn't afford it.
@Unionhawk helped me a bit just trying to figure out what could be done
That's still not Alabama though.

@Yuuki boo
@TimStone I thought that one was pretty bad too lol, I tried to politely ignore it but then he doubled down xD
+1 for effort +1 for knowledge of mid-sized American cities -15 for lack of (actual) humor xD
I still appreciate you though @Yuuki xD
@puzzlepiece87 There is no knowledge too obscure to learn in the pursuit of wordplay.
@Yuuki Fully agreed haha
> Second verse
Same as the first
A little bit louder
and a little bit worse
> So, an idea so poorly thought out and impossible to achieve that it sounds like a lobbyist-conceived grift. Gee, what a coincidence that our acting SecDef also happens to be a former top Boeing exec.

Calling it a wall is a little disingenuous, I pictured the US in a bubble :P But I like how he just seems to think he can just....ask allies to pay for it and they will?
19:53
@puzzlepiece87 ... what?
> We will terminate any missile launches from anywhere, even if it's a mistake.
I am amused at the assumption that this wasn't already part of our missile defense policy.
"Oh, Russia launched an ICBM at us but they said it was a whoopsies so we'll just go ahead and let it in land in Nebraska."
@Yuuki yep, no one previously thought of stopping the missiles before they land
genius move by the trump admin
@Ash yeah i was thinking a dyson sphere type thing and that would actually be extremely impressive
"we're going to build an iron dome around the united states, it's going to be great. iron is very strong" "sir that isn't--"
@Unionhawk perhaps we should make some sort of "iron curtain" instead
(the joke is Iron Dome is the brand name of an israeli missile defense system)
@Unionhawk sorry i have BDSed your joke
20:06
@Unionhawk Trump would definitely call it the Steel Dome instead.

epic choice!
@BradC So there's going to be a SotU after all.
yeah I think feb 5 or something
they decided basically "no we can't do it tomorrow but with a week to plan that's fine"
Another thing to add to the list, I suppose.
@Yuuki the SOTU was always going to happen after the shutdown was lifted
@GodEmperorDune Lifted? There's a more permanent funding solution now or is it still just the three weeks?
20:24
@Yuuki well less than 3 weeks now
Then it's still going on the list of caves.
I mean it occurring annually is literally Article II Section 3
(actually that just says "from time to time")
Gbp is really low, I should take this opportunity to invest in Gbp
@fredley It's not as low as it can go

This is fucked up
@Ash yep and they're still not calling it a racist attack
not sure how yelling racial slurs and tying a noose around the neck of a black person doesn't qualify it as racist, but here we are
user15026
Yeah, I thought that was an interesting, albeit frustrating, omission
@GodEmperorDune Everybody knows an attack is either homophobic or racist, never both at the same time. Because who would want 2 charges of hate crimes for the same assault /s
