i would post the Last Week Tonight Video that actually suggests this if it wasn't region blocked on youtube
outside all of those options that's been voted no in the tweet there's 2 left

- Stay with the EU and take the public backlash of "ignoring the people's will" (might as well, May said she would retire if her deal was accepted, might as well repeal article 50 and retire too)
- find a way to remove the UK from Planet Earth
second option has the issue about Ireland though because the UK part will have to be chained and then ripped off the rest of the island which might lead to all of Ireland holding the UK to earth

@Memor-X The last option would just be pulling a Sokovia.

@Frank yeh but without the extinction level event to the world

@Memor-X Would make for interesting travel.

12:28 AM
Facebook has announced a ban on praise and support for white nationalism https://bit.ly/2HRVTnk
James Fields, who was convicted of murder after ramming his car into protesters at a white supremacist rally in Virginia, has pleaded guilty to hate crimes http://bit.ly/2FEzDMe

@Memor-X Why not just...ban white nationalism entirely from their platform?

@Memor-X At some point, tech companies need to stop disavowing their responsibility to police the platform they built.

keep the very fine people, just stop them talking/parsing about racist things

Applications are tools. They themselves are not good or bad, but how they are used matters.
I still think that programmers don't have the responsibility to police the use of the applications they make; it's going to get built one way or the other. But they should certainly push for ethical usage of it.

12:37 AM
@Frank yeh but in the US at least you're going to get people who bitch about first amendment which this should be a mandatory read for those people

Of course they will; it's not explained very well that the First Amendment doesn't apply to anybody but government.
And idiots will keep parrotting it, even if they know it.

US: N.Korea action 'inconsistent' with disarmament https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20190328_10/

I think we have a weird situation with tech companies where we want them to police their platforms and ban certain things, but I haven't seen an explicit set of clear cross platform rules for what should be banned
And I think the result of this is that these tech companies become de-facto unelected unrepresentative lawmakers
These rules aren't literally laws, but with how big a part these platforms play in our lives they have an impact of similar magnitude

1 hour later…
1:55 AM
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed the Liberal Party will preference One Nation below Labor at the May election http://bit.ly/2Ou6pT3
should have really done this already
though to my understanding preferences is just the suggested voting order that will be on the pamphlets they hand out. not like you have to follow them
so even of the Libs didn't say they wouldn't put One Nation bellow Labor in preferences i would do it myself

2:53 AM
@murgatroid99 pretty much this

@Wipqozn Everything is awful, just burn it all.

11:56 AM
In today's edition of "People are the worst". There were allegations of sexual assault made against a fantasy author recently, from several individuals. Turns out, it was all just from one person, who has spent the last year making fake social media accounts seems like real people, for the sole purpose of harassing this author: thefantasyinn.com/2019/03/27/…
They "Exploited" the #MeToo movement for it too from what I've see. What a piece of shit. "Excuse me victims, would you mind moving over for a second, so I can exploit this movement you started to harass someone? Thanks!"
People are the worst

@Wipqozn thank god they were thoroughly investigated
Did you guys see the thing about Cardi B admitting she used to drug and rob men after promising them sex

@BunsGlazing saw it on the Phillip DeFranco show yes. though i could barely understand what she was saying

Lol
I wonder if she'll get in legal trouble

@BunsGlazing drugging and robbing a guy i assume needs the guy(s) to file the charge against her yet she's saying it was consensual(?) which could mean she's actually bullshitting like "oh i'm a bad bitch because i'm gangsta" or some crap like that

@jonworth Went ahead and updated your flowchart for you. 👍

12:11 PM

Breaking: HUD has just charged Facebook with “encouraging, enabling, and causing housing discrimination through the company’s advertising platform.” https://www.hud.gov/press/press_releases_media_advisories/HUD_No_19_035

Yikes
Still, it's not like the tweet was being promoted

lol, twitter support finally got back to me on that one with a solid "it was deleted by the time we looked at it so we can't really do anything more"

Anyway
Lol. They aren't the morality police. Don't download it 🤷‍♂️

Have you considered that perhaps people who intend to do conversion therapy are using it
I dunno just throwing out possibilities
as to why this is a problem

@BunsGlazing no, but the person making it was, and it's not like that was the only example

1:05 PM
I guess, but that person also made Minecraft so

And he's still listed in the credits, just his name isn't being shown in the main menu each time.

Yeah I actually have no problem with that now that I know that

Also note, he made minecraft up until years ago
'made by notch' is more and more, inaccurate

The first article I read made it sound like he was being expunged from any crediting

imagine becoming a gajillionaire on a mostly copied and refined idea and then just posting 4chan shit all day lol

1:07 PM
Man if I were notch I would do some lavish ass shit

How does one even become such a repellent person that even a ten thousand dollar donation to gdq causes the room to groan at your shit

@BunsGlazing "Hey, it's just an app demonizing $MINORITY, they're not the morality police. Don't download it"

it's both remarkable and incredibly sad

Actually, rephrased: "Hey, it's just an app demonizing $MINORITY, denying they exist and supporting traumatizing them until they pretend not to be $MINORITY, they're not the morality police. Don't download it"

1:29 PM
Also it violates the Google developer policies, but, surprise surprise, those are not reliably enforced
So yeah, this is not "we want Google to be the morality police", it's "we want Google to actually enforce their stated policies rather than randomly banning queer youtubers all day"

@Kevin I miss old Notch, who seemed like a really thoughtful guy.
I found a lot of his old writing at the time he was building MC really inspiring, as a developer

I'm just rephrasing what Buns said =p

@Unionhawk by getting so much money that a ten thousand dollar donation to gdq is like tossing a 1 cent coin, it just happened to land near the guitar case

Also by being a total asshole, relentlessly, in public, for years

From what I read it was a lot of "Oh my god that's great" when they heard the number, and then a lot of "uuuuugh" and silence when they heard who send it

1:41 PM
yeah

I don't think they should remove Notch's credit from the game, but I think it should be put in the smallest possible text at the bottom of the longest-scrolling credits page.
It's called 'deplatforming'

@fredley his name is still in the credits, they just removed the splash screen messages about him.

@ToxicFrog Yeah that's a good move
It's a kid's game, and I certainly wouldn't want any kids Googling Notch, they have enough Nazis to deal with already

2:01 PM
@Unionhawk It's honestly impressive.

2:50 PM
Oh wait this isn't Bridge
2 messages moved to The Bridge

3:04 PM
It's more disgusting then the headline suggests
The NRA is allying with white supremacists

3:15 PM
@Kevin I mean, is this a surprise to anyone?

Yeah, I thought that was old news at this point
I mean, not the specific contents of the playbook, but the "NRA is in bed with white supremacists" bit

It's not a surprise but still, it's evidence?
So that's 'good' to have I suppose

@Kevin "is allying with" is a roundabout way of saying "are"

Mar 21 at 2:59, by Unionhawk
We've also seen highly racialized gun laws in the past (see california's Mulford Act, designed explicitly to disarm the panthers, supported at the time by the NRA) so, the whole thing is complicated at best
relatedly!

@fredley Hmm, they may be staffed with them but they're not necessarily white supremacists? It's not their stated goal? It is quite a hair-splitty difference true

3:35 PM
@Kevin If it walks like a duck, tastes like a duck, and quotes mein kampf, then it's a white supremacist

If you're splitting hairs over white supremacy the goalposts may have been moved

I mean, in my book allying with white supremacists is as bad as being a white supremacist. Buuut it doesn't necessarily make you one, and unlike the political party the NRA's goal isn't a white supremacists goal, hence me saying "allying with" and not "are"

@Kevin To be clear I agree with you. I just wanted to make my totally clever and original duck joke.
Although I do think the vast majority of the people running it are likely white supremacists, so they basically are close enough

@Kevin I also agree with you and understand what you're saying. I just am comfortable not doing nuance around white supremacy. Happy to throw the entire lot in the bad bucket regardless of whether they are actually white supremacists or just allies. Practically speaking, white supremacist allies get no extra currency with me so the difference is not worth splitting hairs over, to me.

Yeah, I mean even if they were (somehow) all nice people that just happened to support white supremacists... still as bad as white supremacists
@puzzlepiece87 they don't get any extra currency with me either but I do prefer being specific

3:46 PM
My hair splitting is definitely more in the "are liberals good or not so good" region

> As we say in Germany, if there’s a Nazi at the table and 10 other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with 11 Nazis.

Because saying "The NRA is a white supremacists organisation" might, arguably be incorrect. Saying they ally with them is a fact

@Kevin Sounds fair :)
@Kevin I do support facts.
(For anyone wondering, I feel like some issues, like climate change, are so urgent that it can arguably be not so good to take local road speed measures on them when highway speed is arguably what is needed)

It is not a stated goal of the NRA to kill all commies either, but they'll tell their members to arm themselves to defend against the socialist wave so I mean, do the math

Listen, I was mostly trying to prevent arguments that 'well they're bad but they just want everyone to have guns for $$$, they're not necessarily white wupremacists'
WHICH GUESS WHAT. THAT FAILED MISERABLY.

3:52 PM
It is not a stated goal of the NRA to enable abusers, they're just looking after their own members in opposing the violence against women act.

@Kevin You're doing fine - this is a simple "preferring to be specific" vs "not really interested" difference. I understand what you're saying and it's a good position and reasonable. I'm too lazy/otherwise occupied to take the same position.
@Kevin You're right, it did fail miserably.

@puzzlepiece87 I just said the line above for that line
I'm not at all concerned or feeling attacked or anything
I just think it amusing that my attempt at preventing arguments caused so many

@Kevin Good :)

I haaaave been a user of this chat for a 'while' now ;)

@Kevin Agreed, I remember your old name too.

BREAKING: Supreme Court refuses to halt bump stock ban.

That was just Kevin with my last name attached

^ Wouldn't have thought of that - unconscious sexism affecting car safety
@Kevin Right.
> On Tuesday, Autocar reported that the EU has finalized new safety rules that will mandate autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, intelligent speed assists, driver drowsiness and attention warnings, advanced driver-distraction warnings, and several other features as standard on all new cars from May 2022 (and from May 2024 for existing models).
Good

I would imagine that the "existing models" bit would be "models that have been designed before may 2022 but are still in production" and not like, retrofit all the things?

@Kevin Yes exactly.

Cool

4:13 PM
@Kevin I didn't link the article, just further answering your question, this was also in the article and answers you:
> While the XC90 has been on sale since 2015, it's about to go through it's mid-life refresh, hence the bashed-up orange ones you see illustrating this article.

Yeah that's been a thing

(Because they are doing crash tests on the refreshed one)

What level of capitalism is corporatization of selling stuff out the back of a truck?
@Unionhawk Yeah no I'm still avoiding Twitter so nothing exciting

@TimStone missed opportunity to call it the "trending truck"

4:15 PM
You'd think it'd be the healthier option but I largely just worry about missing out on something I could actually do something about, like donating to some small cause or something

It looks like a swamp monster is trolling Interior nominee and former oil lobbyist David Bernhardt at his confirmation hearing. Fun fact: Bernhardt has more conflicts of interest than Pruitt, Zinke, Price and Shulkin combined.

lmfao
But also how is that even possible?

@TimStone a dude in a loch ness monster mask sat behind the guy at the hearings

Oh I meant the conflicts part

oh the corruption? trump admin must've missed him on the first pass

4:20 PM
Who has the time for that much corruption?
It's like you took self-dealing and made it a job, which feels like it would stop being fun at that point

maybe his resume didn't have enough crimes keywords so it didn't get recommended on monster

@GodEmperorDune That feeling when you never have any idea wtf you're talking about and you google the wrong thing for 5 minutes before you speak in public

@GodEmperorDune Hang on, is that an argument for or against?

4:29 PM
@SaintWacko in her mind, against

I vote for!

well obvi, lol
if i could get machine eyes that let me see better than with glasses, i am 100% signing up for that

Or just like, average vision

well i have worse than average vision so average vision would be a step up for me

Exactly
also has glasses

4:37 PM
I also have glasses, but just upgrading to average would seem like a waste, when you could get telescoping lenses or infrared vision. Or built in VR/augmented reality capabilities

@murgatroid99 that stuff sounds cool but also scope creep

user15026
@GodEmperorDune waves in cyborg

Yeah and also when you've already got the cyborg connection bits I assume upgrading is easier

@Ash pls share :D

user15026
@murgatroid99 go big or go home, right?

4:41 PM
Yeah, I just want zoom and AR
Maybe also low-light and infrared

user15026
Honestly the only extra I'd want for my eyes would be to fix whatever makes blue lights shifty and painful and hard to see.

i don't want AR actually, i want something simple that i can trust as being accurate and not as prone to security issues

Hmmm, yeah. The only network that kind of thing should be on is a body-wide-network

user15026

Thoooooough, I wouldn't mind facial recognition with a popup of "This is $person, these are your $notes"

4:50 PM
@Kevin Seriously that would be so useful

But would you want everyone to have that?

user15026
I feel like that would get info overload and also weird and what if someone hacked that and then turned it into some weird social scorign or something

user15026
I trust nothing

user15026
Like I am very content with the fact all of my non-bio bits are passive.

@Ash yeah it would have to be only notes and stuff you enter into the system yourself
i would not trust a wikipedia system of notes on people

yay those are nice pics

Oh my god one of the guys actually went to prison? That's awful

user15026
Okay, wow, that's...one heck of a sensationalized article. Like I'm not discounting anything it says, but how it says it is...certainly a thing.

6:35 PM
Port Moody Mayor Rob Vagramov charged with sexual assault globalnews.ca/news/5106620/…
I give up on trying to make that one box
@Ash Are you referring to the headline and the excessive use of pictures?

user15026
Among other things yes

Here's a different source, the BBC: bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-47738892
I think I remember hearing about this case when the conviction first went through. Pretty fucked all around. I can imagine it's really frustrating for survivors s for a variety of reason, including the fact her sentence is far harsher than what most (all?) convicted rapists get.

@Wipqozn and now I'm glad /r/fatpeoplehate got banned years ago, because they'd have a field day with her. Probably saying stuff like "who would believe a rape claim coming from her?"

@Nzall ...

@Nzall I mean, I'm sure there's no shortage of people still doing that

Yeah, true, they'd probably congregated someplace else

Like everywhere. It's not hard to find people willing to shit on sexual assault survivors, woman or obesity.

user15026
6:56 PM
@Wipqozn That's definitely a part of my anger yes

user15026
@Nzall While I appreciate your point, I am not sure it needed to be made? We know full well there are monsters spewing shit. :/

@Ash Yeah, true. I'm also a bit shocked at myself at how easy it was for me to come up with something they might say.

@Nzall I am also shocked

user15026
I'm not.

user15026
It's everywhere, it's not like these views are hidden or unusual.

7:00 PM
It's really one of the aspects of myself I'm struggling to deal with: the constant struggle between my inner snarky bigot and my urge not to be bigoted
I've touched on this subject before years ago

Yeah, I don't see saying "An awful person might say this thing: [awful thing]" as being that different from just saying the awful thing

As in, there's a bigot in me and I'm not sure how to deal with that
because I don't want to be bigoted

If I were a less forgiving person I might say something like "you're a bad person and you shouldn't have posted that"

@Unionhawk Man, good thing you're not, huh

@Ash It's also always exactly the same shit

7:04 PM
like, every time I read a story like this involving a minority or a person who is visibly different from the average, my first inner reaction is a snarky and pretty bigoted and awful thing to say, and I really don't like that

@Nzall Not saying anything will definitely get you out of the habit

Yeah, a good starting point is just not saying it

@Wipqozn Thanks. I googled cause I didn't want to use Unilad of all sources
Don't know much about the Sun. Did find some nudity in a linked article image at the bottom though so good call

@BunsGlazing The sun is very tabloidy

@Wipqozn Somebody spent jail time for it
I think that's a big factor in why she got so many years, some guy spent almost 3 in prison because of her

7:09 PM
@BunsGlazing To be clear I agree perfectly with the sentence, but it's frustrating how much harsher the system treats this then a convicted rapist.

user15026
@Ronan Yep.

user15026
@Nzall That's something you need to deal with, and may I suggest that you...refrain from mentioning the things even in oblique ways like this? Trust me, all of the marginalized humans know what sort of shit people say about us, you don't gotta tell us about how people are doing the thing.

user15026
If you wanna work on your bigotry, cool, but talking about how you are bigoted or whatever is...not how you fix it.

user15026
Do the work, get help as you need (but don't expect marginalized people to just drop everything to help you), but...yeah, we don't need to hear how much garbage people spew. We know. We hear it every day.

@Ash Yeah. I think that's for the best

user15026
7:13 PM
@Wipqozn That's where I am mad - I don't care they punished her, that makes sense, but it makes me so mad that it ended up being more than convicted rapists etc often gt.

user15026
@Nzall trust me, I know it is.

@Ash While on the one hand I agree with you, on the other hand she did put an innocent man in jail for almost three years, and attempted to do the same to 14 others

@SaintWacko And sexual assault survivors need to deal with trauma their entire lives

@Wipqozn Yes. I'm not saying that the sentences convicted rapists get are fair, but I feel like hers was

@SaintWacko I don't think anyone is saying that hers is unfair. I think hers is perfectly justified, and I'm happy with the sentence. But the fact that she's punished far harsher than the vast majority of convicted sexual offenders sends a really poor message to survivors.

user15026
7:27 PM
@SaintWacko I'm not saying hers wasn't fair.

Okay, we're all on the same page then

Yes seems like it. I just think there was a bit of misunderstanding.

user15026
Sorry, yeah, I'm a touch more sensitive about this than perhaps I should be, so I wasn't explaining myself well.

9:14 PM
@puzzlepiece87 i agree that having children is the #1 thing you can do to expand your carbon footprint, but mandated population control is extremely fraught and historically has been used directly on oppressed people to further oppress them. The one child policy in china was a clusterfuck that had no scientific or demographic data to back it up when it was proposed, let alone implemented.

@GodEmperorDune Yes, and also, I'm also somewhat skeptical of the lasting absolute worth of anything outside of my Christian lens, so it's like, if you go to the natural conclusion of that viewpoint (which is not mine), humanity is close to extinction or dramatically diminished in 100 years, which is certainly more sustainable, but sustainable for what? To me, sustainability is not an absolute good - it's more something you do to prevent unnecessary human and animal suffering.

at the same time, i agree with her stance that if you don't want to have biological children and want to adopt, excellent, more power to you. And american society in particular is kind of weird about children in that we expect people to have them, shame/pity those that can't or don't, and also shame/pity those that have too many, and also make it difficult for people who are raising the "expected number" of them

@GodEmperorDune Yes agreed about American society and children. Mrs. Puzzle also has a hangup, she doesn't want to adopt if we can't have children. She says she'll have bonding problems.
It's great to know yourself and avoid your weaknesses and put yourself in position to succeed, so that's good. At the same time, that's a clear hangup in my opinion.

we don't have any sort of federal paid parental leave policies, state ones are still catching up to "not every couple is a stay at home mom and a male that works", not even to mention the bullshit that goes on with LGBT coupes trying to adopt

So we're going forward with that operating assumption even though, ideally, things would be different.
@GodEmperorDune Agreed.

9:22 PM
@puzzlepiece87 yeah i wouldn't want to try and raise a kid in an environment where all the involved adults weren't on the same page, it's difficult enough even when everyone wants the child

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, we're on the same page thankfully :) We're only having kids if both people want it - both of us want biological kids, only one of us is interested in adopted kids, therefore we're only jointly down for biological kids.

gotcha

9:46 PM
@GodEmperorDune Pretty sure the #1 thing you can do to expand your carbon footprint is to get bigger shoes.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 " I'm also somewhat skeptical of the lasting absolute worth of anything outside of my Christian lens" I am curious about this statement.

user15026
(as in I can't quite figure out what it means)

> The original title [of the article about Notch being removed] was going to be "Mein Kraft"
Hehehehe
@Yuuki Does rubber have carbon in it?

@puzzlepiece87 yes

@Ash Thanks for asking! As a Christian and using that lens, I feel like human souls and the way we impact the rest of creation has eternal worth. Putting that lens down for a second, I don't necessarily feel like many things tied up with life and sustainability, such as Planet Earth in its current form and climate, have intrinsic worth.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 Ah, yes, my Baha'i self is in relative agreement, I think. (I say relative because some of how we look at community building and unity and such might vary)

@Ash What I'm very awkwardly trying to say is that I don't agree with the subject of the Political Confessional column that it's morally wrong to have kids, because I do think as far as anything has worth, people can also have worth, even if human existence is ultimately unsustainable.

It seems to me that one of the main conflicts here is between the worth of a person and the worth of humanity as a whole

@puzzlepiece87 I very much agree with you there! Humans are making a mess of things, but that doesn't mean people aren't worth a thing.

user15026
Individuals are worth things, humanity is also worth things, I just...we need to stop thinking that the individual is worth more than the whole.

Like, say someone from the future came and said, "Hey, I'm the last human alive, by 2100 the planet is an absolute hellscape, eternal 2016 continued for 84 years and now everything is dead and gone, but I have this button here for you to erase humans from the planet. I can't push it, but if you push it, it will full-Thanos snap every human off the planet and then at least the animals and climate will survive." I probably wouldn't do it.

user15026
I know I couldn't.

Humans have a worth, as does humanity, we've just gotten so so so wrapped up in the individualist materialist capitalist ideas of "you must have more for you and yours at the expense of everything else" that it has turned a large number of things to absolute garbage.

For me it wouldn't have anything to do with murder, it would just be more kind of a question of "What is the point of continued green existence vs continued hellscape, what makes one worth more than the other?"

@Ash I think framing this as a capitalist thing is not really accurate. Tribalism has been around for the entirety of human history

For me, keeping the Christian lens aside for one second, worth comes mostly from like fostering love and kindness and avoiding suffering, and I don't think either has like a clear clear advantage in that scenario.

It just gets expressed differently in a world with modern technology

user15026
@murgatroid99 It's not entirely accurate, no, but it's not exactly a positive factor most of the time.

@Ash I completely agree.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 Right, is it loving and kind to take away everyone's right to exist, so that we have this happy animal and plant utopia?

My opinion is that you can't place a meaningful moral value on a world without humans. How can you meaningfully decide whether one environment/ecology is better than another if we're not around to get impacted by it?

user15026
@murgatroid99 Agreed, you can't make that judgement.

10:04 PM
@Ash Exactly, not to mention that animal existence is arguably not utopian just because carnivorism is still a thing that exists.

Maybe you can place a general value of "a lifeless hellscape is worse than a thriving ecology", but life in general survives in a variety of environments, and if it's not completely gone it will probably re-evolve in varieties we can't anticipate

@Ash Thanks again for asking. Have a good evening!

tbh there is probably no way to actually make the entire earth permanently lifeless. Bacteria and deep sea things would probably survive and eventually evolve into new things

@puzzlepiece87 You too! :)
