Philly DA Krasner's bail reforms, announced 1 year ago, resulted in a 22% decline in defendants who spent at least one night in jail. And even without the incentive of a bail refund, defendants continued showing up for court. https://www.philly.com/news/philly-district-attorney-larry-krasner-money-bail-criminal-justice-reform-incarceration-20190219.html?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar via @phillydotcom

@PrivatePansy "What do Americans do about the other $20 trillion in national debt? $1 trillion would only cover a year's federal deficit (projected to be $985 billion in 2019)." - well there's like another 49 states isn't there? could sell off another 20 states

12:52 AM
@Memor-X sell texas back to mexico, sorry @Yuuki
@Memor-X looks like the only "deepfakes" reference is the headline and way at the end
i guess deepfakes is just going to be the "kleenex" term for all AI created content now

1:29 AM
My interpretation is that it's specifically AI-generated content emulating a specific person

1:41 AM
Which I don't think it is in this case
A BBC journalist submitted a prompt
It is actually quite impressive what it gets right
I wonder how contextual information is fed into the model

Right, it's not exactly emulating specific people, but it's emulating the writing style of the prompt (and by extension the person who wrote it)

I want to imagine "mechanical problem" is a euphemism for some sort of giant mech going around systematically destroying their planes

“All but one of 30 Flat Earthers interviewed said they hadn't considered the Earth to be flat until watching videos promoting the theory on YouTube” https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/18/researchers-blame-youtube-for-the-rise-in-flat-earthers/

@TimStone best you they were watching Soul Music or Wyrd Sisters

rubs temples I kind of get that stuff like, reaffirming your beliefs? But the production values are so bad, I can't imagine being like "Oh yeah this is super convincing in and of itself"

3:45 AM
@TimStone i get the feeling it's because either the people just like the Creator or that the videos are manipulative in a way. ofcause i don't know who the creators are or the quality of those kind of videos
that being said, did you not see the trailer guy's video about how the world was going on end in 2012 which was totally correct

CBC POLITICS EXCLUSIVE: Jody Wilson-Raybould says she will appear before the House of Commons Justice Committee but is still in discussions with her lawyer about what she can and can't say. https://t.co/XMa4RCPYYt
I must admit I haven't been following what's going on here at all
But, in this video there is a man holding the boom mic in one hand while walking and holding a coffee and a cigarette in the other and that's just Boss Level work
Conveniently CBC has an explainer

> the campaign was conceived partly in response to the recent reported execution by hanging of a young gay man in Iran, the Trump administration’s top geopolitical foe.
Did that actually happen because that's fucked
Who still hangs people in 2019, for starters
Second of all that seems like tricky wording, was he hanged because he was gay or was he actually a criminal

@BunsGlazing In a country like Iran where Sharia law is the default, there isn't a difference

That's bullshit. Hence the campaign I guess
Well it seems like a good start

I googled it, Iran has the death penalty for homosexuality

Ave
Oh yeah I should check if it's legal in kazakhstan

11:37 AM
Well it looks like the US is trying to push to end that worldwide
Which like.. about time?

@Ave same-sex sexual activity is legal since 1998, but they don't have gay marriage or anything like that

Ave
@Nzall okay, good, I won't be in trouble when I transfer through it.

I would just avoid having sex while passing through a country that criminalizes it

Ave
It's more than that, really.
Even if I don't have same sex sex in the country (I won't), the laws still help me know if being LGBT is seen as absolutely unacceptable or not.

It's good to be aware

11:49 AM
@Ave Are you passing by plane? As in transfer?

Ave
@Nzall yes, but as I'll have a long duration between my flights I'll need to enter the country
kazakhstan doesn't require a visa for turkish passport holders, and when I asked kazakhstan embassy if I'll need proof of having-place-to-sleep (such as hotel reservation) they simply said that Turkey is visa-free (which doesn't answer my question, but eh, if they needed it, they'd say it I guess)
so yeah I won't get a hotel reservation, I'll just waste time in airport anyways

@Ave keep it in your pants 🔒
Oh wait no, it's okay there. I wasn't reading right
I don't know much about traveling. Only been out of my country a few times
And just to the US

Ave
@BunsGlazing again, I'm not implying that I'll have sex, I won't.

It was a joke
I know you won't. Just be careful

Ave
I've had friends and partners get harassed (even by airport staff) for being LGBT.
I had to pay 20% more to my ticket just to not fly through a country (and agreed to a 19 hour transfer period) where I wouldn't risk being executed for being LGBT. It's no joking matter, seriously.

Crazy Bernie has just entered the race. I wish him well!
so that's the best nickname he could come up with in all that executive time?

@MadScientist Better than Nancy?

I'm honestly surprised it took him this long
That's really unprofessional

@MadScientist I think it's the same one he used during the primaries

It is not. It is higher than Van Dyke's count, though

per capita though it's less then

2:51 PM
I guess there's an open question of how many rounds they fired, since this is just the number that hit him, but given that they were able to hit him in and around the face multiple times I suspect they did not miss too many shots

the question of how many they fired probably corresponds to how many bullets a police gun holds (which is apparently greater than or equal to 16 since at least I don't remember Jason reloading in his video)

> She said she's disappointed by the police's failure — more than a week after the shooting — to even call McCoy's family and identify him as the person who died that night at the Taco Bell
> "We only know," Nold said, "because we've seen him in the mortuary."

O.C. Lawmaker Proposes New Lanes on 5 Fwy With No Speed Limit as Alternative to High-Speed Rail http://bit.ly/2DXyvkx
What could go wrong?

ah yes because the speed limit governs the rate of travel on the 5

I think the speed limit becomes 0 once someone plows into the median at 130 mph anyway
> “You’ve got a lot of open space between the north and southbound lanes,” Moorlach told KTLA in an interview Tuesday. “So why don’t we just go ahead and build four lanes, two north, two south … and then the drivers on those two lanes would be able to use any speed that they wish.”
lmao
> Moorlach told KTLA he came up with the idea in part to help ease traffic and reduce greenhouse gases

I mean it looks like you might have a lane's worth of left shoulder each in that picture but certainly not 2 each
and also look ahead where it becomes an overpass and you lose that space altogether

He's referring to the stretches elsewhere I think, where they have a large grass median because if you put opposing lanes directly next to each other on roads with high speed limits people die

anybody who thinks building more highway will "fix traffic" just flat out doesn't know how traffic works lol

3:15 PM
BREAKING: Supreme Court rules that excessive fines clause applies to states and local governments, curbing their power to levy fines and seize property. Opinion by Justice Ginsburg.
Unanimous decision

oh shit I hope this impacts the local 26 in a 25 speed camera village
(they're in the process of suing the state of ohio for telling them to stop last I checked)

@TimStone Does this do anything about the absurd civil forfeiture seizings that are such a hot topic lately?

if only there were some variety of law podcast where I could listen to people who are smarter than me talk about cool sounding decisions like this one

Like those people that get their car searched on accusations of drug trafficking and get their money taken away because they say it's drug money?

@Nzall I don't know the specific scope here, we'll probably get an explainer later

3:18 PM
@TimStone Pretty much how I feel about stories about stories like these. The theses of those stories are all teens going "Well we're tired of biased mainstream media so we're parsing it our own way with unbiased sources." and I'm looking at the ones they are championing and going "Yeah, I hate to break it to you, but..."

and talk about how they're surprised this didn't go 6-3 with thomas, gorsuch, and kavanaugh dissenting on the grounds that actually law enforcement is exempt from all laws

Tfw you think you are discerning but you instead go for whatever meme/junk account hits your eyeballs first.

with the dissent written by thomas with his weird self-jurisprudence "as I have previously written" bullshit

@GodEmperorDune IIRC, Texas is actually one of the vanishingly few Deep South states that actually contributes more to the federal government than it receives.
We should probably sell Mississippi though.

@Unionhawk lol well funnily enough Thomas did have a special take here
Thomas concurs in the judgment, but would apparently hold that the right against excessive fines applies only to American *citizens.* That's because he thinks the right applies to the states through the Privileges or Immunities Clause, which does not protect non-citizens.

3:24 PM
...
"the law only applies to certain people" clarence thomas 2019
and 2018, 2017, ..., 1991

Oh, and somehow I only just heard about this? But it's pretty crazy!
She's apparently being investigated by Swedish special police now?

I still can't believe that thomas found a way to bring his "according to the federalist papers" style to a 9-0 concurrence
that's incredible

tl;dr here being that the Swedish ambassador to China set up a meeting with the daughter of an arrested Chinese dissident wherein Chinese businessmen essentially tried to buy the daughter's silence

@TimStone Can't wait for her to run out of money since she was kicked off PayPal.

@GodEmperorDune I wouldn't say no to selling us to Canada though.
Actually, yeah I'm okay with selling us to Mexico too.
Get me away from Mississippi.
> A recent survey by scientists affiliated with Ocean Cleanup, a group developing technologies to reduce ocean plastic, offers one answer. Using surface samples and aerial surveys, the group determined that at least 46 percent of the plastic in the garbage patch by weight comes from a single product: fishing nets. Other fishing gear makes up a good chunk of the rest.
> Media: everyone stop using plastic because you're polluting the environment
> Also Media: but buy lots of fish and support the fishing industry which accounts for most of the plastic waste in the ocean

3:44 PM
@Yuuki Which media has been saying to buy lots of fish? Not denying but haven't seen that.

@puzzlepiece87 It's more of a dietary thing.
Which, to be fair, makes sense because cows are really taxing on the environment.
Plenty of health and environmentalist mags talk about eating more fish than other livestock.
Again, makes sense. But if you're going to tell people to eat more fish, you should also educate them on where to source their fish.

Breaking: Supreme Court rules 9-0 that the 8th Amendment's protections against excessive fines and fees is incorporated to the states, in case of Indiana man whose Land Rover was seized through asset forfeiture https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/18pdf/17-1091_5536.pdf

@TimStone I mean that part of the 5 could use more lanes, it’s a mess right now. But long term we need mass transit

Adding a whole lane isn't even a short-term project

@TimStone yeah the picture is of a different part of the 5

3:54 PM
75 through cincinnati has been under some variety of construction since the beginning of time

@Unionhawk it’s like 36 months, depending on how far and what they have to do

Yeah that's three years
if my math is right
it's a long ass time to be in the process of applying a band aid

@GodEmperorDune Increasing lanes won't improve congestion though.

@Yuuki nope it won’t
But it’s not like there are a lot of alternative routes through the location he mentioned

@Nzall I haven't read the entire decision, but so far it looks like states and municipalities won't have to get rid civil forfeiture entirely, but the effect of the forfeiture will need to be reasonable.

4:01 PM
@Yuuki sorry there is a no return policy on ted cruz, eh

Did the President of the United States really call high speed rail ‘Fast Train’ like a five year old?

@PrivatePansy is he making fun of it or promoting it?

The failed Fast Train project in California, where the cost overruns are becoming world record setting, is hundreds of times more expensive than the desperately needed Wall!

@PrivatePansy lololol world record setting cost overruns

These are English words, but somehow the tweet doesn’t read like English
The sentence structure and grammar is so bad
Although if POTUS wants to make alliteration his thing from now on I think I can get behind that

F—k Ken Paxton.

What was he indicted for?

Two counts of securities fraud
And then some other related charge

@TimStone is it really fraud if your wife makes it no longer illegal?

#ISIS teen bride Hoda Muthana, who left #Alabama, has no right to come back to the US, says @SecPompeo.
Kind of torn on this because on the one hand the government revoking citizenship but on the other hand idk just don't join ISIS like come on now

@TimStone Did she have citizenship from birth, or was she naturalized (and held dual citizenship)?

I'm not positive
Her parents are Yemeni immigrants, I believe she was born in Alabama where they live but none of what I've seen is specific on that point

did we post the cucker tarlson segment in here?

Yes, lol

6:52 PM
lol

FUCK IT WE'LL DO IT LIVE - tucker 2019

looks like a producer or something took cell phone video
this is why you gotta treat support staff well
(if you don't subscribe to the "just don't be an asshole to people" principle and need something a bit more self serving)
@TimStone revoking citizenship is pretty fuct, otherwise the govt could just go "hey you got arrested, we revoke your citizenship and now all the protections no longer apply to you"
it should be the citizen renouncing it, if anything
for the people eventually searching transcripts, i don't support ISIS, thanks for reading

7:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, I mean they can't technically do that, so I guess the argument here is that in marrying into ISIS and promoting violence against America she somehow did renounce her citizenship?
I think even the Fox take here was originally that she can't be denied entry but could be immediately arrested

@GodEmperorDune On the one hand, the whole "supporting a group whose stated goal is the destruction of your country" kinda lends itself to questioning whether someone should be a citizen. On the other hand, we don't revoke citizenship for murderers who actually kill US citizens.

@Yuuki we don't revoke citizenship from hate group member's whose stated goal is to "peacefully ethnic cleanse" the country either

Meanwhile the UK did indeed strip citizenship from their person in a similar situation

@TimStone the UK is also stripping EU membership from all their citizens

Ziiiiing
But yeah, the Home Secretary has the legal authority to do so there, which is untrue here
> GOP lawmakers urge Pompeo to label cartels as terrorist organizations
OH WOW I WONDER WHERE THIS IS GOING
🙄🙄🙄

7:10 PM
@TimStone i'm surprised they are not already
@TimStone oh is this a wall is terrorism defense therefore funding opens up move ?

Listen, we had 2 forever wars (the war on drugs, the war on terrorism), why not merge them
that way we will END ONE OF THEM
it just makes sense

I was thinking more about using AUMF powers to invade South American places but that probably works too

lmao

@Unionhawk the war on druggerism, 3 wars now
@TimStone that is also bad

as if this president doesn't think he could get bipartisan "lets invade south america"

7:12 PM
@TimStone Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
I gather that the government's argument is that she was born to a diplomat who was in the United States on official business, and so was not entitled to birthright citizenship. That's correct as a matter of law if it's true, but it's not true just because the government says so.

@Unionhawk pelosi claps
@TimStone and you thought it couldn't get sillier

@GodEmperorDune I mean tbf
This is extra absurd given that Trump has spent all this effort telling other countries to repatriate these folks and like he could just do that and charge her with terrorism and get an easy win

@TimStone trump seems to be allergic to doing sensible things
maybe if hannity proposes it

@TimStone hell yeah this will be great
and ruin the bodyguard's gravy train

Still pretty crazy the bodyguard was paid to say that Trump definitely declined an offer of prostitutes in Moscow
President Trump says Andrew McCabe :"He really looks to me like sort of a poor man’s J. Edgar Hoover. I think he's a disaster.” https://t.co/SMcnqPbG8I
I mean, they still named the building after him, so while this is a technically correct burn I'm not sure if he's stuck the landing

@TimStone if anything wouldn't he be the rich man's J edgar hoover because he was investigating trump?

I think it's more of an allusion to him doing a half-assed job of Hoover's partisan spying activities
Asked if he's considering replacing Dan Coats as his intelligence chief, President Trump tells me, “I haven’t even thought about it." Trump ally Chris Ruddy, who saw the president in Palm Beach last weekend, raised questions about his future in recent days.
I mean I also believe he hasn't thought about it
@TimStone She also apparently destroyed her passport
Which I guess they're saying was indeed intentional and therefore symbolic
We are back from lunch, but instead of Mark Harris, we will be hearing from his son, John Harris, who is an attorney and representing himself. #NC09 #NCpol
lol

@TimStone Given what happens in other places in the Middle East (cough cough Qatar), I wouldn't be surprised if ISIS demanded that she destroy her passport or would've otherwise restricted access to it.

That's true though this was also pretty apparent in joining ISIS I think
New: FL Rep and Trump superfan Matt Gaetz is on a creepy, sustained media blitz about how much he loves AOC. 7:42 PM
@TimStone bruh wtf
oh this is a different creeper than that reporter with the AOC obsession

@TimStone uhhh

@GodEmperorDune Yeah Matt Gaetz is the guy who got out of the DUI because of his daddy and pals around with Chuck Johnson and conspired with Trump to discredit the Russia investigation and was an asshole to those Parkland parents

8:48 PM
@BradC I mean, "the end of the First Amendment as we know it" is quite hyperbolic

@MBraedley I mean, a fundamental change in how libel/slander works does seem rather major.

actual malice is pretty key in stopping SLAPPs I feel
probably

A @gwupoe scoop: A LT in the US Coast Guard was arrested this week for drug and gun charges. It looked like a run of the mill case until the detention memo filed yesterday. He had a hit list, contacts with white supremacists, guns, and, again, was an Coastie assigned to HQ.

Trump has no idea about his administration’s push to decriminalize homosexuality around the world, per WH transcript from today’s pool spray:

@TimStone I hate that this is happening and I also hate that very few people who comment on it seem to understand the difficulty in getting a perfect 0% error rate for detecting problematic content.

@TimStone Damnit, why did someone tell him about it? Now he'll probably try to shut it down

@TimStone so the Fox News morning shows didn't report about it, obviously

@murgatroid99 True, though I am curious how much harm would be done in just starting from a known bad example and purging most of the highest recommended related material
Since per the Wired article the algorithm is very adept at exposing you to content the paedophiles like in a similar vein to the flat earth stuff

@TimStone So, I read the original (I think) reddit thread about this issue, and the main type of content involved was videos that are reasonably innocuous out of context, but are viewed/treated as sexual or exploitative by viewers

9:44 PM
Yeah, it wasn't clear to me what the motivation for these videos were
Like if they were being posted by people who were aware of that angle or not

E.g. young children running around playing shirtless.
@TimStone The questions then are: can you distinguish between those posted innocently and those posted for this purpose, and if not, is it worth just banning everyone who posts any video showing kids in bathing suits?
One of the commenters mentioned posting a picture of their kids in bathing suits on Flicker and abruptly getting a bunch of creepy followers before making their profile private

@murgatroid99 as a more extreme opinion, maybe videos of small children on a public place are a bad idea anyway. They can't consent and you can't unpublish from the internet really. (this is an exaggerated version of my unease with people posting their children's life so publicly)

Right, I'm not sure there's any value of publicly posting stuff of your kids like that but at the same time I've probably shared a few pictures of my son so I guess in those circumstances I disagreed with myself?

@MadScientist I would not really disagree with banning that, but that's a big policy change for YouTube to make and it would probably make a significant number of users unhappy.

@TimStone one hell of a list
Apparently

9:50 PM
And there are YouTube channels run by/with clearly consenting young(ish) children. Should those be allowed?

@Unionhawk Indeed

@murgatroid99 IIRC, children legally cannot give consent.

@TimStone It's really a matter of how public the place is, who actually sees the imaged/videos, and how private the content is. There's a big difference between posting an image of your child in a chat room like this, and posting an embarrassing video on Youtube that goes viral

I am curious how much "going viral" is a goal in people letting their children post a ton of these videos to begin with
Like there was an example in the Wired article of young girls going through morning routines and that...just seems like a weird thing to be around, filming, then uploading to the internet?

@Yuuki I mean, if a kid sets up a camera and films their self playing music or whatever, and then uploads that to YouTube, you can't meaningfully claim they didn't consent to being filmed.

9:53 PM
@murgatroid99 do they understand the consequences? (I'm not disagreeing entirely, it's a very different thing than the parents posting stuff. But it's also not exactly the same as an adult doing the same thing)

I have also seen channels with stuff like "kid does science experiments with his dad". There, the parents are involved, but the kid still wants to do it.
And I'm not exactly opposing the idea of just blanket banning all of this, but I want to point out that there are multiple groups of people who would be pretty unhappy with such a decision and it's worth taking that into consideration

I'm not seriously proposing a blanket ban, but I think that the type of legitimate video you might hit with an aggressive removal might just be the type that's better to share in private anyway

Well, whatever the rule is, the other problem is that you have to be able to define it in such a way that a machine can detect violations.
The problem right now is that the problematic content now is "stuff that might be sexually suggestive in the eyes of a pedophile", but that's not exactly a rigorously defined category

10:31 PM
I'd be interested if, when a video is flagged, there's anything that says "And these are the videos we think people who didn't have a problem with this video would like", since that seems like a possible improvement to get more of this content handled at once, at least until the problem becomes so small that stops being useful
BREAKING: Chicago Police: Jussie Smollett is now "classified as a suspect in a criminal investigation" for allegedly "filing a false police report." "Detectives are currently presenting evidence before a Cook County Grand Jury." http://NBCNews.com
:/

@TimStone yeh this is getting more fucked up

11:00 PM
@TimStone I would guess that would just be too much extra work, if you consider all of the flagged videos across all of YouTube
And determining before hand whether a flagged video falls into this category probably involves solving the machine identification problem anyway

For all the horrors that the Jewish people suffered during the Holocaust, Israel jumped pretty quickly onto the "crimes against humanity" bandwagon.

11:16 PM
@BradC wtf

Austin firefighters are in a cherry picker trying to convince Patricia Okoumou to come down from the Southwest Key building. She has been up there for several hours in protest of family separation at the border. https://t.co/SIkubfWYGG
@Yuuki With this in particular it seems kind of crazy that everyone's kind of known about it for decades and we're just like "Eh"

@MadScientist yeah this is why age of consent laws are a thing
if someone is too young to understand the consequences, they legally cannot provide consent, no matter how much they want to do something
usually its parents consenting on behalf of the child

@GodEmperorDune I find that more problematic than children doing something by themselves in many cases

user15026
@TimStone That is awful.

Keeping with the theme of being awful let's see what Jack has been up t...what the hell?

11:25 PM
wtf
@MadScientist it depends on the thing and the age of the child and so much else. Young children do extremely dumb and dangerous things, and science has proved that the impulse control sections of the brain don't really develop until the early 20s

I actually don't know if satoshis are an actual thing or some slang for Bitcoin and I don't know which one would be worse

@TimStone an extremely wealthy CEO going "lol give me tips" is just a bad look

@TimStone a satoshi is a specific fraction of a bitcoin as far as I know

Of course
@GodEmperorDune Especially on account of all the Nazis, still
Erick Erickson thinks it's totally unfair we're "ignoring" the Smollett developments in favour of the uhh checks notes actual domestic terrorist with a far-ranging list of targets and an established plan
A very normal and healthy perspective
Venezuela’s military attaché to the United Nations, Colonel Pedro Chirinos, has announced his official recognition of Juan Guaido as Interim President of Venezuela. He has chosen democracy for Venezuelans over Maduro’s tyranny. https://twitter.com/ConflictsW/status/1098143231836073985

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, like....wtf

user15026
11:37 PM
"The general unit structure of bitcoins has 1 bitcoin (BTC) equivalent to 1,000 millibitcoins (mBTC), 1,000,000 microbitcoins (μBTC), or 100,000,000 satoshis. While the exact figure is unknown, it is estimated that Satoshi Nakamoto may possess 1 million bitcoins, equivalent to 100,000,000,000,000 satoshi."

user15026

@TimStone i mean the smollett development is still not settled and chicago police are not exactly the most trustworthy when historically dealing with POC
how long ago did they fight the release of the tape showing them killing a POC unprovoked? 2016?

@GodEmperorDune add that to how they all have phones with camera and it's easy to upload them to get people who love seeing people do dumb and dangerous things (Planking, Bird Box)

Yeah, though that they're moving to charge him for filing a false report is at least substantiated. Still quite unimportant next to the actual terrorist in any case, though!
Good god.

@TimStone holy shit

11:39 PM
Like that seems pretty damn blunt

user15026
@TimStone ELI5 please?

2 hours ago, by Tim Stone
A @gwupoe scoop: A LT in the US Coast Guard was arrested this week for drug and gun charges. It looked like a run of the mill case until the detention memo filed yesterday. He had a hit list, contacts with white supremacists, guns, and, again, was an Coastie assigned to HQ.

@Ash A lieutenant working at the Coast Guard HQ in DC was looking to murder various left-leaning people including Democratic politicians, media personalities, DSA figures, etc

user15026
@TimStone That's delightfully terrifying.

the link has a thread with details

11:41 PM
But yeah, the thread there goes into the details of the charges
Ahhh @GodEmperorDune inb4ed me

@TimStone i mean inb4d with your own thread, does that still count

Well and the follow up comment about it being a thread with details :P
But yeah, I think they usually just represent someone as "a danger" or whatever instead of saying "Lock this dude up because he's 100% gonna do murders"

nvm missed the sentence where he was

I mean it's really quite fortunate that these people continually do the dumbest things

if people are going to get killed for hot takes, it's a lot of people

11:46 PM
A counterpoint here though is the Las Vegas shooter I guess, who seems to have not done a lot to jeopardize himself and we still don't really know what that was about as a result
