They're writing and producing, apparently? The show is basically a comedy about them without them directly

Newspeak is the language of Oceania, a fictional totalitarian state and the setting of George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the novel, the ruling Party of Oceania created the language to meet the ideological requirements of English Socialism (Ingsoc). Newspeak is a controlled language, of restricted grammar and limited vocabulary, meant to limit the freedom of thought—personal identity, self-expression, free will—that ideologically threatens the régime of Big Brother and the Party, who thus criminalized such concepts as thoughtcrime, contradictions of Ingsoc orthodoxy. In "The Principles...

They want to renegotiate the flat-rate agreement or they'll pull out and then shipping overseas will just be ????

@SaintWacko I'm not sure how much control you have or want to take over your current browser, but blocking can be helpful for getting around paywalls.
Like, I can't control my work browser, but I have Firefox with ABP, Privacy Badger, and NoScript on my phone and that helps a lot.
WaPo still sometimes gets me based upon fingerprinting, but not often, and it's awesome for getting around walls on other sites.

incognito mode works reliably for me

@TimStone are we not going to be able to send/receive international mail now
@SaintWacko incognito mode

@GodEmperorDune the democrats want open borders for mail

@Unionhawk how else can i mail order nukes in weed bales?

@GodEmperorDune If they don't renegotiate presumably we would still be able to just at the rate de jour? Which would be confusing and problematic for anyone who does it with remote regularity I assume

@GodEmperorDune right? "I was saying boo-urns"

I tried shipping internationally with UPS once and whew
USPS all the way

@TimStone sure the free market makes things less expensive and more efficient in theory, but in practice,

Look it's just economies of scale and the individual consumer is the scale of their middle finger alright

Oh wow, it's even more absurd than I expected
"Okay stand in this very specific spot and then wait for the gate agent anyway, a much more efficient and certainly non-intrusive way than them scanning your ticket"

5:11 PM
mobile boarding is a thing anyway

user15026
@TimStone so if I have to wait for a gate agent, why not just do it the other way

user15026
Like...why do this other than to let you randomly gather data

user15026
as I assume that's the true purpose

and if your phone dies then talk to the gate agent for a boarding pass

I don't even know! They claimed it was going to be faster which already seemed unnecessary but I don't see how it could even be that

5:17 PM
@TimStone I can see the benefit of this. It's simpler from the traveler's point of view

I don't see how though?
If you have to get the okay from the gate agent it's literally less direct than them handing you back the boarding pass stub

In one case, you need to make sure you have a boarding pass at the gate. In the other case, you don't

You still have to have the boarding pass to begin with though, so
Because you have to clear security

Maybe this is a test for loosening that restriction at security too

Yeah honestly "is it easy to verify whether or not you are allowed to board an airplane" is a solved problem
And if you don't want a piece of paper in your hand, most airlines have an app!

5:20 PM
Also you'd have to remember your seat number?

This just seems like it would be prone to problems

(since this is Delta and not South West)

Yeah, I'm not actually sure about the seat number problem

Just make every airline board like southwest tbh

I refuse, assigned seats are a gift from the heavens and everywhere including movie theatres should have them

5:22 PM
said the frequent single traveler who could not give any less of a shit

That way you don't waste money on shitty seats

other than the occasional A boarding group purchase

Other than that, though, I don't really see the downside here. Working facial recognition means that they already have a picture of your face. What data could they possibly be collecting here that they don't already have?

The thing is they don't currently have a picture of my face
Under the previous system

In the rollout at Dulles which oddly enough does not involve Delta, supposedly the pictures get removed after 12 hours

5:23 PM
What do they do, take the picture at ticketing?

So I'm like only kinda worried from that perspective? It just seems like an unnecessary use of technology while e.g. the planet is burning

and then verify that you are the same person when you get to the gate?

I assume they somehow have a partnership with TSA or something so that they do have your face, on account of requiring a federally compliant ID for any flight

@TimStone I literally only care about assigned seats if I can get an exit for cheap, otherwise southwest is usually fine for me
@TimStone the TSA doesn't just have that on file though

I have to pee with absurd regularity sometimes so I prefer aisle seats >_>

5:25 PM
I prefer window seats so that nobody ever climbs over me

@Unionhawk It does if you have a federally compliant ID, since they all require a photo?

the Ohio BMV does, sure
but they're not going to scan my driver's license to get a face recognition photo
I hope
because that would be dumb as shit lol

Hmmm

user15026
@murgatroid99 I also like window seats because I feel like I can make myself smaller and then no one has to worry about getting past the fat kid

The best seat is a window back row exit

user15026
5:27 PM
(although really flying just makes me hella anxious anyhow so anything that adds to it is just no thank you, because fat + shunts is a BAD airplane combo)

The one where there is no seat in front
Can I respond to spoken English commands and open this door? Sure

@Unionhawk DHS says that they don't have a central database but REAL ID requires that states maintain a digital copy of your face in a "transferable format" and I'm not sure what the utility of that would be if it didn't make it into a central database

How good is an up to 5 year old photo for facial recognition though

It also says that states must let other states access their data

So, you don't exactly need a centralized database, strictly speaking, just on-demand access to the various state databases

5:30 PM
I'm skeptical and it all just feels like an extra step even though it obviously isn't, but a boarding pass has less room for error

Ahhh
No, you have to participate in CLEAR

Oh lol
The private pre-chek?
That got pretty much completely replaced by pre-chek?
lol
yes CLEAR I will pay for you to have my photo and biometric data so I can go through your padded rope line at select sporting events and select airports

Ah, no
Sorry

Aw, that would have been way funnier

The thing at DCA is powered by CLEAR, the thing in the photo I think is CBP

5:34 PM
since apparently their service costs $179 per year

Having a SkyMiles account gives you special pricing on CLEAR, no worries

(TSA Pre-Chek is $85 for 5 years, but can show up randomly on regular tickets)

Yeah, so the CLEAR system is finger-print based and this CBP thing is facial recognition
And DHS does have a biometric database, somehow

I mean I'm sure they do
They just do not have my data

It's possible that this is only on international flights too which would require a passport, so REAL ID isn't even an issue there

5:38 PM
Unless an agent fingerprinted me in my sleep
or some shit
knock on wood I have yet to be arrested by DHS types

This setup makes marginally more sense but is far more dystopia-looking:
But much better than "Ah that gate agent actually didn't nod at you now you're under arrest and we have to evacuate the plane and put the terminal on lockdown"

Oh yeah it totally won't be extremely annoying to roll a bag through there

Nah, it's not that bad, they have exit gates at Philly for just "you're leaving the terminal" and they're about the same size

@Ash You feed it your face and if it doesn't like it the trap door opens and swallows you whole I think

@Unionhawk This is my feeling too personally, but I get why people don't like it
@Unionhawk The best seat is anywhere at least a few rows in front of the roaring engines

@GodEmperorDune I just got an image of the future. You're looking for a certain type of story, so you go to a website and choose some parameter, and it generates a story just for you

i mean current state seems to be machine learning and automated suggestions of snippets

@GodEmperorDune okay how did I know this was going to be Robin Sloan related

@SaintWacko Alternatively, existing targeting data is input as those parameters, and links to the generated story are posted to your social media

most of those "lol an AI wrote this script" are either heavily edited to make sense or quite bad and using the AI thing a a gimmick for an otherwise terrible script
@murgatroid99 jeez, microtargeted copypasta

@GodEmperorDune This is kinda a misrepresentation of the article, though, it's not a mass thing, it's just Robin Sloan doing a weird experiment thing as he is wont to do
