oh hell yeah @TimStone

Yeah, I'm still trying to wrap my head around that being something someone actually wrote
"How will he handle it?"
"I mean he almost definitely ordered the kidnapping/probable murder"
"Ah but will he un-murder him as a show of good faith?"
"...No? What?"

JUST IN: Supreme Court rejects bid to review Kavanaugh-authored appeals court ruling that nixed Obama-era climate rule
Reuters being a fair bit misleading in its implication there
It's not that Kavanaugh is bad (this time), it's that the EPA is now like "Actually HFCs are awesome pump them bad boys into the atmosphere after all"

wait are you telling me that both parties are at best Insufficient on climate change

Well yes, but this was a lawsuit by companies who wanted to use HFCs and now the Trump EPA has 180ed
So there's just not much left to review on account of the EPA largely abandoning its rule

Oh that makes slightly more sense

2:05 PM
@TimStone Oh good it's now technically news
uhhh
BREAKING: President Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation https://www.axios.com/donald-trump-nikki-haley-resignation-d25b64a9-264e-483a-a79b-ae8a48e367db.html?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=organic&utm_content=1100

Can't wait for our new UN rep, John Bolton or someone like that

@TimStone big question is why she is resigning

I dunno, no other outlets are reporting this yet so let's hope they didn't pull another Rosenstein
The paid D.C. protesters are now ready to REALLY protest because they haven’t gotten their checks - in other words, they weren’t paid! Screamers in Congress, and outside, were far too obvious - less professional than anticipated by those paying (or not paying) the bills!

we're through the looking glass people

Well at least now we know why Jared and Trump are meeting with Kanye on Thursday

2:13 PM
I'd normally say "Kanye West, UN Ambassador" would be emblematic of the hellhole we currently live in, but it seems like every decision Trump makes is somehow pretty goddamn emblematic of the hellhole we live in.

@TimStone Maggie's on the case
Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30am.
"IT'S MY SCOOP, MINE!"

@TimStone doesn't sound like fired, more like promotion

Reminder: This is trump we're talking about
Don't expect his words to have any relationship to reality

did Trump's attacks on the NFL actually impact ratings? @USATODAY analysis of viewership data finds that the quality of football, not politics, played a much bigger role: https://bit.ly/2RCZMPq
Ah who knew the driving factor for ratings was people's interest in watching the content
(not a swipe at the report, but at Trump's assumption he could sway viewers)

2:31 PM
maybe she'll be the new attorney general, or something even more insane

@TimStone I imagine that must be a really difficult job right now

Here they are.

@TimStone I hate you forever.

CNN is now speculating that Ivanka Trump is taking over as UN ambassador and I want to throw my computer out the window

@TimStone Actually, can we mod-delete this?

So that was the first time I used Porkchat's burninate feature.

@Yuuki I mean, we can!
BREAKING: Nikki Haley is leaving at the end of the year, Trump says. She wants to “take a break.”
She's running
But also weird that it's announced now, before midterms!

@Yuuki now I'm curious what it was

> The second Salisbury poisoning suspect was named a GRU doctor, who gave himself away by using his first name and real date of birth on his fake identity passport.
Honestly, that doesn't sound too dumb. Keeping your first name means you avoid the whole "person calls you by your fake name and you don't react" trick.
And it's not like your date of birth is going to clue anyone in to you being a spy.
> Dr. Alexander Mishkin's false identification papers also listed GRU headquarters in Moscow as his home address.

My favorite thing about the “college campuses are hotbeds of radicalism!!” is Have You Ever Gone And Talked To A Bunch Of College Kids https://twitter.com/yashar/status/1049673482332659712

apparently UC has some event where all the political orgs on campus debate each other, which sounds awful but there's a YDSA group there this year

I mean it is kind of absurd when you consider a non-zero percentage of college students were people who could painlessly afford to go to college and therefore aren't obligated by circumstance to pay attention

3:01 PM
it still sounds awful

@Unionhawk It would be better as just a cage match tbh

Exxon puts $1 million into carbon tax campaign http://hill.cm/3lRoMwe

yesterday, by Unionhawk

What's the gamble there, that smaller companies can't bear the cost so Exxon & co can scoop them up?

3:05 PM
Oh as in they want to look like they're helping

Yeah, the campaign is calling for $43/metric ton
I have no idea what's actually reasonable

all of it
tbh

Central estimate for social cost of carbon is ~$50/metric ton.

Hmm, yeah, it also seems coal still accounts for ~30% of US energy production, so that makes sense if Exxon thinks it can push natural gas sales

IIRC, Exxon is not involved in coal. Or at least minimally so.
So it would make sense that they'd want to push them out.

3:18 PM
Right, since natural gas plants are more efficient and less CO2-producing than coal, putting in the carbon tax would push the market in that direction barring the viability of other forms

Err…okay? No one even asked you Other Bob

Hmm... being a CEO and deciding to not run for president is probably way too low a bar for "welcome to the resistance".

being a ceo grants you automatic membership in the resistance as long as you aren't ceo of trump hotels

unrelated (partially related I guess, more related to the CNN piece going around today), from the Guardian last year:
100 companies are responsible for 71% of emissions
don't let CNN frame us all being about to die as an individual moral failing because you don't take the bus or whatever

5:10 PM
@Unionhawk yeah our individual moral failing is in not eating the rich quickly enough
@Yuuki NYT, wapo, and all newspapers do a lot of good journalism work. my main complaints with them are: 1) funding terrible take clickbait opinion pieces, 2) assuming that it is possible to write an unbiased article when the very act of deciding what to cover is tainted by bias, 3) assuming that doing both sides equivalence (and ignoring scale) "averages out" into a neutral article
oh and 4) not realizing that their own actions in publishing/not publishing stories contributes to how those stories play out
as a good example of 4, the whole "rostenstein joked about betraying trump in a meeting" a few weeks ago
as for what i consider good journalism work, most of it is investigative work that takes a lot of time and is very expensive to do properly, so mainly its big papers that can still afford to do it these days
NYT's extremely long read on how donald trump and his family did a lot of extremely shady if not outright illegal tax things back in the day is a great example of that

5:37 PM
White House just announced that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will speak to reporters on the driveway in 15 minutes.
Look both ways for busses

@TimStone so is javanka officially un rep now?

Well Haley's in until the end of the year, UN Ambassador is a Senate-confirmed position, the prospect of Ivanka in that role might be too absurd even for them
Especially when the alternative would just likely be some rando Pompeo lackey or something

or is this just a "nikki haley was so great, vote her in 2020" groundwork speech
stupid chat lag

I dunno why she gave Javanka shout outs though

the senate will just about confirm anyone these days

5:44 PM
congrats to UN assembly rep mark judge

@GodEmperorDune It helps if you come from a preselected list like Kavanaugh though

@TimStone so un rep dinesh dsouza then

Sorry I should have clarified that the selection list can't be the imitation Christmas tree catalog

oh i thought the preselected list was anyone on fox news

@Unionhawk Which is why Carbon Tax is really important, but of course, the right tries to brainwash people into thinking it's a bad thing for the little guy

5:50 PM
@TimStone dinesh is a serious intellectual who wrote and directed a film how dare you

Look I'll still turn to him for advice about voting fraud or whatever

@TimStone campaign fraud

Ah right
@Wipqozn Hmm this is actually a good question, of what the impact is on general folk. The 100 companies are all energy providers, so I guess we should consider what power they have to raise rates until the market corrects. Of course, dealing with that is preferable to, you know, baking to death, so either way 🤷
‘Not today,’ said Bill Shine, the WH communications director when asked for reaction to the UN climate report predicting a dire future. ‘It’s a Kavanaugh night’ https://nyti.ms/2zZl3fa?smid=nytcore-ios-share

@TimStone i'd be more sympathetic if they weren't so dickish about making solar a pain in the ass

the official white house position has already been "who fucking cares, it's too late anyway"

5:58 PM
@TimStone it's illegal to throw beers at wh officials, isn't it?

@GodEmperorDune Right I just meant like for people to be able to afford electricity, since it would presumably impact poor folk the most. The companies can go pound sand, obviously

@GodEmperorDune if a law is unjust, one is not only right to disobey, they are obligated to

@TimStone make power companies into co-ops imo
put the public back into public utilities

@Unionhawk I'm pretty sure what they really mean "We'll be dead by then anyways, fuck you everyone else hahahahaha!"

@GodEmperorDune Down with Exelon Corp!
But actually they don't even own any coal plants I don't think
So it looks like if we sent @Unionhawk south with a sledgehammer and some unlimited time off he could kick things back in the right direction

I was wondering what the hell that multiple-MW "Other" generation source along the Virginia/WV border was and it's presumably this:
The Bath County Pumped Storage Station is a pumped storage hydroelectric power plant, which is described as the "largest battery in the world", with a maximum generation capacity of 3,030 MW, an average of 2,772 MW , and a total storage capacity of 24,000 MWh . The station is located in the northern corner of Bath County, Virginia, on the southeast side of the Eastern Continental Divide, which forms this section of the border between Virginia and West Virginia. The station consists of two reservoirs separated by about 1,260 feet (380 m) in elevation. It is the largest pumped-storage power station...

8:09 PM
@GodEmperorDune These people should not be on the water
If you're gonna panic that much over whales, then you really aren't safe driving a boat
Actually that guy who isn't losing his shit is probably the drive, so that's good
I bet he'll never be taking any of them out on the water again

@Wipqozn He actually tells someone to drive the boat away during the video, likely because he realizes that everyone panicking is probably not a good idea despite the whales not really being any danger.
So I don't think he's the one driving the boat.

Ah okay I definitely return to my earlier statement then

Given that the boat didn't speed away before being told to, I'm guessing the person driving the boat also wasn't panicking and likely just didn't say anything during the entire video.

SCOTUS just upheld voter ID law in North Dakota that could disenfranchise thousands of Native voters & cost Heidi Heitkamp her Senate seat. "The risk of disenfranchisement is large" RBG writes in dissent https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/10/supreme-court-makes-it-harder-for-tribal-north-dakotans-to-vote/

@GodEmperorDune so what's this voter id law?

@Memor-X this specific one says that you have ot have a residential address to vote
however most native communities in the state use PO boxes to get mail so they don't have a residential address and thus cannot vote under the new law
the native communities voted strongly in favor of the current senator, who is a democrat and up for re-election and barely won last time
and the rest of the state is strong republican and passed through voter suppression mechanisms like this

A third of Maryland Democrats are backing the Republican governor. http://bit.ly/2yqw8UI

@GodEmperorDune was about to say that having a residential address would make sense but since you added about the PO boxes yeh i can see the problem

ah,

11:58 PM
not 100% but i think in Australia you do need an address but you can use a PO Box too because in all cases you need to provide photo ID when you vote anyway and the address just serves to indicates where you are to vote
