10:39 PM
looks at email
🤔
I don't have anything particular against Tim Kaine or anything, especially as a fellow Tim, but like, I was counting on him and Clinton to not lose yet HERE WE ARE
We also need to have a frank discussion about the fact that the thinking face emoji in Microsoft's emoji set is god-awful

Not as bad as the previous Android cheeseburger and beer

> Nikki Haley says leaders who spread conspiracy theories aren’t fit to lead

Here's the Verge story on that flamethrower https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2018/1/25/16933812/elon-musk-boring-company-flamethrower-price

🤔

tl;dr Elon Musk has a flamethrower for sale because this is 2018 now

10:47 PM
@TimStone Doug Jones emailing about Tim Kaine is about the most DCCC thing

For years, Dutch intelligence had access to Russia's Cozy Bear hackers group. Crucial evidence for Russian interference in the U.S. elections was obtained, prompting a FBI investigation. That's what @Nieuwsuur and @volkskrant have found. https://www.volkskrant.nl/tech/dutch-agencies-provide-crucial-intel-about-russia-s-interference-in-us-elections~a4561913/
As I predicted: Ford files patent for self-driving police car that would communicate wirelessly with your speeding car & ask for ID https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/ford-patent-filing-outlines-a-self-driving-police-car/
Will the CarCops be able to shoot people?

Yes

I like the necessity of adding the lone tree behind which the CarCop is hiding

user15026
@TimStone patents don't always mean they're actively planning to do a thing, sometimes patents are "we wanna make sure no one else can do this"

Good point. I dunno what to make of this and I can't decide if it's bad or good

10:58 PM
I mean Ford sells cop cars so
I assume they are interested in doing the thing if the thing becomes a thing that municipalities want

user15026
True

Kris Kobach's office leaks last 4 Social Security digits of nearly every Kansas lawmaker (90%), and thousands of state employees, including Kris Kobach (sorry @BrettParker4KS!) https://gizmodo.com/kris-kobach-s-office-leaks-last-4-social-security-digit-1822415622
lol, classic

It would be much harder to do the super left stuff I want, but it would cut out the cruel and shameful. I'm in.
Plus the tax bill wouldn't have passed and Obamacare wouldn't have been up for repeal
In fact it would have had bipartisan, overwhelming support since it was originally a conservative idea.

11:18 PM
@TimStone Can someone tl;dr this? I keep trying to read it but I get lost and confused

We know the Russians hacked the DNC because the Dutch hacked a camera outside their base of operations and listened in for years beforehand
(I haven't read it all yet myself, to be fair)
Also important is that we were so happy the Dutch shared this with us we sent them cake

@Ash so there is a group of elite russia hackers that call themselves "cozybear". their expertise is in hacking other governments. we are pretty sure that cozybear is hacking on behalf of the russian government

user15026
@TimStone I missed the part about cake.

because cozybear is so notorious in what they do, other countries' govt hacking groups have been after them for a long time
the dutch's hacking group was able to hack them

@Ash And flowers! But they're Dutch so they were probably like "lol we have these"

11:29 PM
including a digital camera so they can see who the humans that make up cozybear actually are
the dutch govt figures out that cozybear is planning to hack the US govt, so it warns the US
now for a context tangent: in a regular war, you can see where the fighting is happening because bombs are exploding, leaving debris behind, etc. In hacking it is EXTREMELY hard to see what is being hacked
there are not really visible clues left behind

> Donald Trump tells Theresa May he won't visit the UK unless she bans protests

user15026
@TimStone lol yeah probably

> Alternate title: Snowflake Begs For Safe Space

to make an analogy to physical war, it would be like all the bullets are invisible, so the only way to know that a battle took place would be to look for shell casings across the entire battlefield
so back to the article
the dutch were able to tell the US govt exactly when and where the hacks were happening, so that the US govt could actually fight back
take compromised servers offline so that cozybear couldn't use them anymore
this type of thing literally never happens in hacks

user15026
Oh, okay, that's kinda great

11:36 PM
its usually months or years later that they find out data was missing and have to do analysis on everything to figure out how it happened
also govts tend to work at bureaucratic speed, but what the dutch were doing was so valuable was that they set up a direct line between the US govt people doing the cyber defense to the dutch hacking group

user15026
Okay, so how long have the US known that whatever was being hacked was being hacked? Isn't this like the smoking gun to say Russia did the thing?

and even more impressive is that until recently, the cozybear group probably had no idea why their attacks were failing and did not realize that the dutch had hackedthem

user15026
Also, related to this, once this all gets sorted, if it's Russia's "fault" the election went as it did...what does that actually change

user15026
All of this is so confusing to meeeeeeeee

@Ash Yeah, but our intelligence services already said that and Trump went "mmm I dunnooooo Putin said he didn't do it"

11:41 PM
@Ash they never give exact dates on this type of stuff because they don't want to expose more info than the y have to

@Ash Nothing in regard to the election but it does highlight the seriousness and truthfulness with which we should take the threat

the fact that we're hearing about this at all is pretty incredible

Sources tell me Stephen Miller had a pretty feisty conference call just now with immigration hardliners. Lots of them hate the proposal. Seems like the WH has managed to piss off just about everyone!

as for smoking guns, like @TimStone said the relevant agencies in the obama administration knew
obama personally told putin to cut it out

Miller being to the left of some people in Congress is disturbing

11:43 PM
obama told the leaders in congress
the proposal was "let's all make a joint statement that this is wrong"

@TimStone yeah what the fuck does Ted want, a giant blender he can throw people in?

and mcconnell (republican senate leader) said "nope, if you publicly announce it, we're going to spin it as you doing a pro hillary thing"

so the obama administration sat on it for the most part until after the election
if they had announced it publicly, would it have changed things? no way to know but i suspect it wouldn't matter to trump voters

11:46 PM
now that its out, does it change anything? not really, we don't have a do-over or anything like that

(which like, let's be real, is a sign this is god-awful, but)

there are tons of scandals and things that the trump admin has done that are despicable and wrong and this just kinda sits in that pile
long term how do we fix it? a lot of new laws that make things that used to be "frowned upon" explicitly illegal

The Puerto Rican government's new fiscal plan quite literally calls for a deconstruction of the island's administrative state
Jesus

mandatory for all presidential candidates to publish however many years of their taxes (and immediate family members' taxes)

user15026
@TimStone Christ. It's like they're trying to just eradicate the place

11:51 PM
mandatory procedures about what kind of financial stuff you are allowed to keep as president and what you have to get rid of and how
personally i'd like to see the electoral college banned because it's stated use case (keeping someone who won the election but is unfit to be president from being president) has been exercised and it didn't do a damn thing

user15026
@GodEmperorDune They had good intentions but good intentions are so easily corrupted

@Ash pretty much
basically the "assume good faith on behalf of the president" stuff needs to become "assume bad faith and put more checks and balances in"

@TimStone yeah in that case I'm more confident
Unless the deal is "but fund ICE to hire 450,000 more agents and more immigration judges setting 30k minimum cash bond" or some shit

user15026
@GodEmperorDune yes.
