12:06 AM
@TimStone to me such a plan implies a dream act giving them legal status
Maybe that isn't his plan which ? But

12:45 AM
@Unionhawk Yeah but then why'd we go through the shutdown crap?
Turkey disputes the WH account of the Trump-Erdogan call, including *Trump did not share any “concerns [about] escalating violence” in Afrin *Trump said the US has stopped arming the YPG *President Trump did not use the phrase “destructive and false rhetoric coming from Turkey.”
Heh

@TimStone is he an anti-globalist anti semite and he honeymooned in israel?

@TimStone because he doesn't honestly believe anything except for whatever Steven Miller wants so this won't happen
He doesn't care

Right, hence the hissing
Ben managed to say something so idiotically pedantic that he was called on it by... the head of a libertarian think tank lmao
Trump: Fighting back against Russia investigation is not obstruction http://hill.cm/JXoqyaR

@TimStone fighting back against an investigation is exactly what obstruction is

Fighting back against the police is no longer resisting arrest either the President said so
Potus, obsessed with Clinton still, asked me in response to my q about under oath whether she did to the FBI. He doesn’t seem to know that lying to the FBI even without being under oath is a crime. Perhaps Flynn can tell him https://twitter.com/maggienyt/status/956300770873356288
🔥

1:00 AM
it's not a lie when the president says it?

@TimStone I'm not sure that's what "pedantic" means...

> Mr. Trump also said he did not recall questioning Andrew G. McCabe, the deputy F.B.I. director, during a job interview about how he voted in the 2016 presidential election, after White House officials conceded on Tuesday that the president had, in fact, asked the question.

“I don’t think so; no, I don’t think I did,” Mr. Trump said, adding, “I don’t know what’s the big deal with that.”

If you're not doing a joke about how you're being pedantic about the definition of pedantic I'm going to scream

> I don’t know what’s the big deal with that.

At @Wipqozn

1:03 AM
that is exactly the problem

@Unionhawk Well now I want to say it's not a joke.
Also, if health insurance is slavery for doctors, why is auto insurance mandatory in so many states?

@GodEmperorDune Classic Reagan

how can the president be so ignorant on basic things?
when you hire people for a business you are not allowed to ask about certain topics, does he not get that also applies for govt jobs?

I think the mistake is assuming he didn't ask those things while running the business

sad but fair point
they probably kept him far away from the hiring interviews

1:16 AM
GOP lawmaker says aide who accused him of sexual harassment "invited" behavior http://hill.cm/5YufaSb
> “That I would find later that that was not something that she was comfortable with, really hurts me,” Meehan told the The New York Times in an interview. “This was a person who specifically invited communication with me so that she would be able to have the ability to be there for me.”
has someone been living with their head in the ground during the whole MeToo thing?
just because someone invited communication doesn't mean they are also open to tell you to fuck off when your in a position of power over them

@Memor-X repost and that dude is just as much of an asshole as he was the first time he started explaining it away

Notable: DOJ says Rep. Nunes has not seen the classified materials on which his "FISA abuses" memo is purportedly based.

all these people "how dare a lady judge made a speech" can go into the sea

Wellllllllllllll
She did kind of allude that if it were up to her she'd let him get raped, which like, he is a monster but I can't get on board there
Except for that part though, I don't think it's uncommon behaviour for a judge and if we want to not have that happen here isn't the place to start

i'm fine with judges making a big speech that "you did something so bad that the justice system can't scale" and prefer that to a "boys will be boys" speech
there are also other issues, like how he got away with this for decades and the organization doesn't seem that upset that this happened
not to mention the systemic issues with rapes going unreported or uninvestigated or dna samples sitting around so long the samples rot
anyway she probably could've worded it better but that is not the side of the debate i want to stand on

2:07 AM
Yeah, I think if it's an issue it's a far more significant one for minor crimes, not heinous ones such as this where the defendant deserves it
(i.e. telling a low level drug dealer they're scum and worth nothing might potentially be harmful with regard to rehabilitation)
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, the only part I object to is the rape bit for obvious reasons

@TimStone yes i agree with you there

Latest 7zip has buffer overflows allowing code exec if a malicious shrinked .rar or .zip is opened. It's fixed in the latest trial version but not in stable and it's not described in release notes. https://landave.io/2018/01/7-zip-multiple-memory-corruptions-via-rar-and-zip/

@TimStone sorry but it still counts

2:59 AM
@TimStone did he show up at all?
Also regarding Chelsea Manning palling around with nazis
I really don't know how anyone with any kind of public presence these days can be completely ignorant of how Nazis recruit, but apparently a lot of you are, so here's a quick breakdown of what they do.
Looks like she got in over her head being groomed and really needs to disavow and cut contact
If this piece on Chelsea Manning is true (and the author claims to have spoken with her campaign staff to get the details), this is troubling to me. 😞 https://twitter.com/JackSmithIV/status/956246407547162624
This thread has more details

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, uh, @KFILE retweeted something earlier I'm not gonna link in here that would support this theory

John Kerry considering 2020 presidential run against Trump: report http://hill.cm/BMck6NO

@TimStone so...he's worse?

Not worse than Trump, god no, but he lost to Bush in 2004

Yeah I appreciate what he did as Secretary of State but you get one shot as a major party nominee and after that you step aside

@TimStone well when Trump sets the bar pretty low, you don't want it getting any lower that not even Hermes can limbo that
and still, could be a Republican theme, their candidates/presidents are just crap since Bush?

@TimStone delet
No
God dammit
Holy shit
Running the guy who lost to bush is some galaxy brain Democratic party bullshit lol
Like I thought Biden 2020 was a bad plan but this is next level

@Unionhawk but was it a bean burrito

@Unionhawk rekt
@TimStone I remember the mess when boehner retired, paul Ryan was the long shot out of that
Who would possibly try to replace him?

god, but, probably
Better than Ryan I guess
And idk who else

Ugggh. Everyone is too scared of nobody wanting to with with them anymore to have any kind of spine
God forbid you stick up for your workers

4:58 AM
@MBraedley he does specify world leaders currently in charge of a country which would eliminate him as it does Corbyn

Ah, Trump is doing an interview while at Davos

Oh no and or something about how that can't be worse than the one closed door meeting his labor guy went to that was literally called "replacing human workers with robots"

It's with Piers Morgan

Which, this being davos, has an implied ", but in a neoliberal type way" added to it
@TimStone oh no

5:23 AM
@TimStone my researcher is this researching Trump (and thus trying to dig up dirt) or someone who did research on voter trends during the campaign

It was someone involved with the "election commission"

@GodEmperorDune I'm confused. I'm happy AfD has lost a member, but I'm confused how this happened.

9:59 AM
@Arperum no idea, I don’t follow German politics

@Arperum Wagner says it's part of his personal life, so an explanation would have to come from another way
Not the first time right-wing extremists make a radical twist like that. There are tons of ex-KKK members who suddenly turned non-racist

10:17 AM
@GodEmperorDune AfD is basically the german alt-right/neonazi group.

10:44 AM
@Arperum They have a lot of supporters that are alt-right/neonazi but I wouldn't call the whole party that... But yeah they're pretty far-right.

she isn't the first judge to overdo it and won't be the last. there's cathartic value in what she said and i doubt the sentence will get reversed as a result. but judges who do this are usually yelling at teenagers on drug charges away from a livestream. that isn't ok either.

2:11 PM
@Unionhawk What happened?

This is the nasser case
where the judge was basically like "you're guilty per your plea, now die in prison"

2:22 PM
But wait! There's more!
Trump, in a scrum at Davos, just told a reporter that his message to the world is "peace and prosperity".
🤷🏼‍♂️

please tell me that there is another meaning for the word "scrum" in this context than like, the Agile(tm)(r)(c) context because otherwise "a scrum at Davos" is the worst set of 4 words ever written
like hemmingway might be able to do sad in 6 words but that's visceral anger in 4

A media scrum is an impromptu press conference, often held immediately outside an event such as a legislative session or meeting. Scrums play a central role in Canadian politics and also occur in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The same term is now also used for similar gatherings of journalists in the United States. == Origin of the term == A scrum in rugby is a procedure to restart the game. From the outside, it may seem to involve players from both teams clustering tightly around the ball competing for possession. Analogously, in a media scrum reporters cluster around a public...

thank jesus

A scrum (short for scrummage) is a method of restarting play in rugby that involves players packing closely together with their heads down and attempting to gain possession of the ball. Depending on whether it is in rugby union or rugby league, the scrum is utilized either after an accidental infringement or when the ball has gone out of play. Scrums occur more often, and are now of greater importance, in union than in league. Starting play from the line of scrimmage in gridiron football is derived from the scrum. In both sports, a scrum is formed by the players who are designated forwards binding...
but I don't think that applies in this context

I mean they all come from the rugby thing

2:25 PM
well yes

I forget if i s

But I'm more just glad it doesn't mean in the project management sense, because that would imply that there was some weird Davos project to manage

I forget if I shared this as it's not actually news but it's the second time it's been promoted in my feed:
Your career starts here at OCPD! We're hiring for summer positions now. Visit http://joinocpd.com for more info. https://t.co/M0bWy3Fi9s

lol
yeah I've seen that one

(watch the video for the slow motion hug)
A driver is blaming the Waze app for directing her to drive down a boat ramp into Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. She said it was foggy and dark and she didn’t notice until she had driven 100 feet out into the water. All three people in her car were safe: https://t.co/HBG9nvnshg

2:31 PM
@TimStone no

Okay so I can maybe buy the fog letting you like, accidentally drive into the water but how do you not notice until you're 100 feet in?

It must have been really shallow for that distance

@TimStone listen, Israeli tech is really sophisticated
(Waze is from Israel right? Or are the people who are like "you can't use Waze if you support BDS" dumb)
(I mean, to be fair, the answer to the second one is yes because like there's more than one navigation app on the market and Google Maps is quite good?)

Also, Google owns Waze and it uses Google Maps data

That's also true
I forgot about that
They've shared data for a while but I forgot an actual acquisition happened

3:14 PM
Actually, what's new after the acquisition is that Google Maps uses Waze data

Ah, yeah I guess that did happen like a full year and a half ago or something like that
makes sense

@TimStone That's a shitty boat ramp if you can get 100 feet out into the water. The whole point of a boat ramp is that the boat starts floating before the water reaches the hitch, which means it's often steeper than what most people would expect.

3:31 PM
lol

@TimStone sure...

I mean
No
I think "speed is the new currency of business" is the winner but it's a tough race even among those contenders only
"optimism goggles" is pretty good too
Oh nevermind scratch that the winner was that whole thing where Davos attendees simulated the refugee "experience" last year

I mean, Vince McMahon is making some "major sports announcement" so yeah probably
Oh it might actually just be completely confirmed in addition to "yeah probably"

Not sure if it was already mentioned here but Doomsday Clock is two minutes to midnight (first time since 1953)

30 seconds closer yeah

looks like 1953 was because of the first thermonuclear missile test so fun stuff
love too create nuclear winters by accidentally falling asleep on my bigger button that works
on the other hand I'm sure Trump would love being implicitly compared with a thermonuclear missile
like that's a compliment

the xfl is wario football so of course it’s coming back hell yeah
It's hard to argue with that tbh

@GodEmperorDune what the fuck

This dude is a real winner, he expects his GF to do this cooking on schedule
I hope he gets trounced

@puzzlepiece87 Actually I think it was just this one, the rest are pulling from the original source so nothing extra added

@Unionhawk Agreed, just find a good candidate Democratic party! Stop giving us the sports-style managerial merry-go-round!

@GodEmperorDune where is he running

@quartata Missouri

4:40 PM
if he gets more than 35% of the vote then America has officially failed
probably will happen
I don't get it anyways, if we measure patriotism by percentage of GNP contributed then wouldn't it be more American to go to McDonald's than use the services of a homemaker. he must not believe in capitalism.

@GodEmperorDune Thank goodness - we're lucky we keep getting weak candidates
Last time was the "actual rape" guy or whatever

@puzzlepiece87 are you kidding me that's a love letter to boomers right there. probably a winning strategy

@quartata Going to cry if you're right. Love too keep Alabama and Mississippi company at the bottom.

all I mean is keep expectations low considering the state
although hopefully making a lot of noise about it works like it did in Alabama, dunno

5:11 PM
Yup, we'll (Indivisible) be doing GOTV postcards for MO as we get closer to the election.
(I was super dumb and forgot the earlier cards we did were for a recent election)

Me, unskilled in politics: "Someone do something! The Republicans are passing a bill to grind up people who make less than 40k a year into a fine, snortable powder." You, paid Democratic operative: "Don't worry, that's gonna be really bad optics"
this, as it turns out, is Chuck's plan

nice

5:30 PM
@Unionhawk there's not a lot that the minority party can do to delay the agenda

@GodEmperorDune I'm just frustrated because like, no Chuck, they won't explain to dreamers why they didn't do the thing, they'll just unleash ICE who has literally all of their information
as voluntarily given under the promise that we would protect them

three things: 1) ICE is fucked up in general 2) what we are doing to the dreamers is goddamn reprehensible 3) unless the trump admin changes its mind, there's not a whole lot congress can do about it
ICE is already exceeding its authority when dealing with dreamers and is getting sued over it
trump has put people in charge who are going to follow some other law if congress passes a law that they disagree with
arpaio for example
we really should blame boehner for not taking up the 2013 senate bill that literally solved this because they DID NOT WANT IT SOLVED /OBAMA TO GET A "WIN"

Blame him too yeah
That shit was full amnesty at 68 votes just five years ago but now we're not even going to be able to get a fraction of people protected because everything is awful
I mean we'll see, but I don't trust the "they have to pass a dream act of some sort otherwise they look bad" line of reasoning wrt trusting McConnell

Oh good we got the text messages back

@TimStone wow

@TimStone cool now we can prove that the FBI did pizzagate or benghazi or whatever

@TimStone Strong conservative women like Melania Trump? Do we even know if she’s conservative?

@Unionhawk Johnson already caved and admitted that it could have just been a joke, so there's that

6:13 PM
To my knowledge, she hasn’t espoused any political views.

She said the Nazis were bad today, so

@TimStone Hmm, you mean people say stuff like "I'm part of the secret cabal that actually controls the world" as a joke
That's crazy who would do that

Conway and Sanders are both PR, so not really sure they count either.

The illuminati is no laughing matter

As their job is to basically tell everyone what Trump thinks, not advocate on their own views.

6:15 PM
@TimStone (statement)

They could’ve at least mentioned Collins or something.
@TimStone Did she pick now because Trump is in Davos and therefore couldn’t come along?
:thinking_face:

lol that's a good point, I have no idea why she didn't wait until Saturday
I mistakenly thought the observance was today

@TimStone seems the standard bland statement a first lady would give

Yeah, it's not remarkable

i mean remarkable in that its so much better than spicer's comments last year

6:19 PM
er, in the "there is nothing particular to say about it" sense

@GodEmperorDune At least someone in the White House is behaving like a normal White House person.

but only because spicer's comments were so bizarre and terrible

But the implicit joke was she'll be disowned by the far right for saying the Nazis were in fact bad

I mean to be fair I'm like 60% sure that Sean Spicer is just dril

@TimStone she didn't actually say that, that's just what the press release says

6:21 PM
Fair

her statement is the most passive voice thing

@Unionhawk I saw a take on Twitter the other day that I didn't appreciate at the time, Spicer used to get yelled at for his press briefings and that was why he stopped doing them on TV

"broken by the horrors of the Holocaust"

Because President McDeals wouldn't be able to watch him during his TV time
As the more stupid explanation for why that was a thing that happened, I have to assume it's totally accurate

A common description for poverty is people who've "fallen through the cracks". Basically, human exceptions. And algorithms aren't good at exception handling.

It also certainly doesn't help that we've created such a patchwork
and with the literal crack that is the gap between qualifying for medicaid in a nonexpanded state and qualifying for subsidized healthcare.gov plans
because of course the law was written in such a way that it assumed that every state would expand because why wouldn't you

8:09 PM
@Ash people designed the systems with cracks, people design the algorithms to implement the same systems with the same cracks

user15026
Taking the humans out of the human centered things just....augh people no

user15026
not everything can be solved with computersssssssss

@Ash part of it depends on what the goal is

user15026
Well, yes

a lot of times, the goal of adding technology to the process is to make it cheaper for the organization running said technology

user15026
8:11 PM
@GodEmperorDune yeah, I know

if the goal was instead to make it easier for people to be awarded benefits, we'd see a different result

user15026
but cheaper =! better when you're taking the glorious variety of humanity and reducing it to little checkboxes

user15026
You can't account for individual situations

user15026
and I nkow they don't want to because it's all about the $$$

user15026
but hot damn this can and does KILL PEOPLE.

user15026
8:12 PM
Can we have star trek utopia plz

and from working with rules engines, rule interactions are VERY HARD to figure out in advance
so some of this is also shitty laws being passed
that then get implemented instead of "accidentally misinterpreted"

I mean to be fair shitty laws have shit consequences with or without automation
See: KY, soon

but at least if humans are there, they can be like "oh this process isn't going to work for you, lets do this alternate thing"

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Ideally, yes

user15026
I mean they don't do that, all of the time

user15026
8:14 PM
but at least there is that option

like a lot of the govt funding stuff is in how you word things
not lying or embellishing, but mentioning facts that are relevant to the funding rules but wouldn't appear that way unless you were already familiar with the system
yonatan zunger has an excellent piece about this with regard to machine learning
about how it doesn't make sense to tell the system to optimize for things we don't know that we want to optimize for
because of cultural context and such that gets taken for granted

@Ash A cool thing that Tim brings up a lot is medical/legal partnerships; so like, someone comes in with a frequent/persistent cough or something and they ask "how's your living situation", and when the answer is often "pretty bad but my landlord sucks", they get sent home with medicine and a form letter to the landlord threatening legal action unless the building is brought to code, or something to that effect

@Unionhawk Tim?

medium has a weird paywally thing, but incognito mode solves that

@Ash Tim Faust, he does single payer advocacy

user15026
Ah, I am not as aware of all of that sorry :(

That kind of work is essentially his answer to "what about people currently working in health insurance administration" is "hire more people to do this kind of work"
But that's kind of the thing in a lot of cases, people need help navigating the legal rights they have and a computer isn't really good enough to do that thing

JUST IN: Cruz breaks with Trump, opposes path to citizenship for Dreamers http://hill.cm/jKeJp4Q
Hello, Canada? Yes, I'd like to make a return

I oppose a path to citizenship for Ted Cruz specifically

IT HAPPENED BEFORE IN 2014 https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1zzzq0/ponzicoin_operator_steals_money_investors_get/

lmao apparently Ponzicoin has been a thing twice and exactly the same thing you'd expect to happen happened twice

Ah fantastic
I WAS AT THE STORE

@TimStone Wow. Why is he a senator from Texas?
As a state, we're more flexible on the issue of immigration than most deep red Republican states.

Yeah it does seem like eventually you run into the "But what about my friend X, one of the good ones?", which is still super racist but less addressable with a blanket policy of intolerance
But nah Ted's gonna dive right in there like it was a bowl of Campbell's

lol that was the best unforced error
just like, that being a thing that the campaign released
at all

I mean, I'm pretty sure multiple polls have shown that the average Texan is far less supportive of THE WALL and other anti-immigration policies than other Republican states.
Don't get me wrong, we're stupid conservative on other topics.
But the state as whole is relatively moderate on this one.

@TimStone the good news is that democrats are backing down from dream act as part of their negotiating position more broadly

Yeah, I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more play that border states find it arrogant that other Red states tell them what they need on the border

which is super cool thanks guys

The whole issue of eminent domain here is really serious
@Unionhawk Love too cower
Just ended. Judge seemed skeptical of DOJ’s plea to throw the case out. If he lets it continue, DC & MD want to examine Trump Hotel’s books. https://twitter.com/oconnellpostbiz/status/956616193024188416
The White House wanted a Van Gogh. The Guggenheim offered a used (gold) toilet. http://wapo.st/2E8dljs
lol

@TimStone I think with the sole exception of Arizona, all of the border states are like "why the f--k you guys so angry?"
