White House memo also directs Pentagon to stop spending on treatment regimens for transgender people now serving http://on.wsj.com/2wosPhU
ugh fuck all things

@GodEmperorDune someone should point them (the people who are having the meds cut) to tap

@Avery if theres a way for this administration to fuck over trans people, they will

I mean meds are really the cheapest part
much less costlier than surgeries or even therapy sessions or blood tests or anything

its not really about saving money, it's about punishing trans people for being trans

yes of course

1:52 AM
Well... so.... I give up

@TheMattbat999 hm?

I'm also pretty irked by this whole "we have to stop paying for treatments! They're too expensive!" thing.

@Avery idk

@TheMattbat999 Try to make messages meaningful, especially in this room with a specific, more serious topic.

user15026
@TheMattbat999 The point of this room is to discuss news and current event type things, not to make random statements. This room is attempting to be more seriously topical than The Bridge, please respect that.

2:04 AM
@StrixVaria ok

user15026
Or you know, @StrixVaria can say it faster and more concise :P

@Unionhawk I find it quite sad that those that want to serve their country and are perfectly fit do so are not allowed to do so due to something they are, and even more so when that thing doesn't affect their performance.

Yes

1 hour later…
user15026
3:26 AM
hahaha they updated it: gop.gov/…

@Ash wooooooooooooooooow that is a stretch

why tax cuts for the rich is just like zelda: 1) is a game developed and published by nintendo 2) ???
wait what are we talking about
oh right the young people

6 hours later…

2 hours later…
12:30 PM
It's not starbait because there's a link, right?

It is a news article
So it's not @Strix's meme

This is probably a better way to do links.
That way you know what you're clicking on.
In fact I'm going to fix the star list.

I mean [description](link) is generally the best method
I don't know why people are so lazy as to not do that CC @Wipqozn
(Excepting when oneboxing)

@PrivatePansy I mean
I can see how it can be adapted to that

And also, with filibustering in congress someone is getting screwed

12:34 PM
Is that worth doing going forward?

I say people should always do that when they post stuff, but that's been my opinion for ages =p

12:46 PM
People say he's obsessed with his predecessor but I don't see it https://t.co/NbztxsKjyj
dunno where anyone would get this idea
also explainingthejoke.jpg
Is it hometime yet? I don't know if I can survive if we have that this early

12:59 PM
I wonder if a Trump Twitter feed into this room would simply get flagged to death ;-)

The only way I get trump tweets is fed through journo and weird twitter
and I intend to keep it that way

Every time I hear Trump's voice I have this overwhelming sense of abject disbelief that anyone can take him seriously.
I can't stand it; I can't listen to him talk.
His twitter is no more tolerable than that.

He also takes 9 minutes to type a continuation a lot of the time
So we get "I am something soeme3 thing something..." 9 minutes later and unthreaded "...a complete and total shutdown of..." etc

Maybe he's using speech-to-text and just stubbornly wrestles with it instead of just using a keyboard, like many other old people I know.

which is pretty much how he speaks so
@StrixVaria at that point hire an aide to type for you

1:21 PM
@StrixVaria Hang on, how long is there between commercial breaks on Fox?

must not star

@KevinvanderVelden do it... give in to your laughter

> Stars reserved for news articles/videos only.

Every time I speak of the haters and losers I do so with great love and affection. They cannot help the fact that they were born fucked up!
2014 but still

dam
ok
first of all
how dare you mr president
secondly
log off

@Avery How can you do something with "great love and affection" when it's clear that it's really derision and contempt?

Fake news
Fake news network lying about what I say!!!!!

I never said on many sides check what the script says right here:

2:20 PM
@MBraedley How can words meaning when words you don't know mean having?

[narrator] the tapes however show that he did in fact say these things

Daily Mail reports the State Dept. spent $100,000+ on car rentals during Tiffany Trump's recent Italy vacation. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4740690/Tiffany-Trump-s-Roman-holiday-cost-taxpayers-100K.html#ixzz4qWJCrSd7
I mean > dailymail but still

A federal judge rules that a new Texas voter ID law is discriminatory http://cnn.it/2xe9v4B https://t.co/EX9dSN6Yz3
USA USA USA

@Avery Look Tiffany deserves this

I'm unsure how one spends 100,000 on a rental car
Like, were you there for 10 weeks
did you accidentally buy the car

2:27 PM
There's presumably some company that rents those VIP SUVs
x n for the number of Secret Service agents
I assume "We rent you the car that you won't get shot in" lets them charge a prime rate

right, ugh

Om
Oh
My

Yeah, I'm gonna guess these are "bulletproof" cars

I literally got out of bed for this
They're saying that Gulen founded LGBT

@Avery wat.

2:34 PM
It's the Daily Mail, there's at least even odds that this is fake or at least grossly misrepresented

Müritlerinin geleceklerini garantiye almak için lgbt'yi de fethullah gülen'in kurduÄŸu ortaya çıktı. (Sevinin artık oÄŸuz'da sizden.)

@Avery That's like saying Erdo founded Nazism.

it's amazing
I'm like laughing so hard

What does that even mean

@Avery You won't keep laughing when you notice that idiots pick up on it and go arrest you for it...

2:35 PM
Do they think it's like
an organization

"it was revealed that fethullah gulen founded LGBT to guarantee the future of his followers"

@Arperum No, it's like saying that some guy founded gravity.

"(be happy, now oguz is one of yours)"
oguz is a name
not sure who said oguz is

@Avery I'm very confused right now.

Nazism was actually founded, at some point, by someone.

2:36 PM
@TimStone And also bulletproof cars are expensive.

@Arperum same

@StrixVaria True. I got to something like that too, but brain is slightly not paying much attention here, because coding stuff at work.

ok this oguz person was apparently in jail with this person for, what, 5 years?
replies are all fucking crazy I love this
(nope I'm terrified as shit but who cares)

Us
Technically
I mean I don't know about that @KevinvanderVelden guy but other than that

2:41 PM
I normally block these idiots but there's so many of them haha
oh and
I believe either this person who posted the tweet or the oguz person was recently busted with like a 15 yo kid
it was oguz
also in turkish news: head of second biggest party had a picture with him in undershirt, eating with his family at their own house (that's a common stereotype actually) and people are insulting him over it
oguz bulut.

thank you for the periodic reminder that at least the United States is only 57% askfjjasdl;kfjsa;lkdfjsad;lf

ok this sedat peker person is a big personâ„¢ apparently and like close to AKP/erdo
Also close to akit apparently which is an islamic extremist media network
going through his biography, he's like a john mcafee sort of person, or like a walking GTA
like killing drug dealers and sex workers etc

2:59 PM
Does he also kind of look like a potential jungle murderer like John McAfee does

he looks like jontron
just with a less lovable face.
terrorist relations, countless murders, extremist ideologies... why do people even like this person
And apparently he has statements like "we'll make terrorists bleed [heavily, probably to death]" even though he had been arrested for terror relations and has quite some stuff he did.
going over his articles, he's a person who wants to get away from europe and western world and embrace the middle east and shrug just why
oh nice
he's calling arguably best presidents in history of turkey dictators and denying that erdogan is one
yeah the more I read the worse this person gets

1 hour later…
5:24 PM
wait what
I turn my head away from Turkish media for a second and white nationalists pop up.
well
turk nationalists who don't see non-white turks as turk.

I think you have a "not" too many there

yes

3 hours later…
8:09 PM
I wonder if Trump will use the sovereign citizen argument if/when Mueller brings obstruction of justice charges.

9:01 PM
oooooooh
apparently a single district in trabzon, turkey was won by a communist person
he:
- made water free (not sure if drinking or the household water but still, amazing)
- started giving away scholarships
- made transport free (and uses it himself, he has no car)
- made 2x libraries with 10k books
- releases list of all transactions done by the tax money they get for sake of openness
but he's being called a terrorist because communist = bad, xd.

10:11 PM
Joe Kennedy remarks on Trump's ban on transgender service members. Take a moment to listen to what he says. https://t.co/revGnVpOwU

Correct. https://twitter.com/votevets/status/900532942841167872

10:47 PM
question is good for CMV, but fighting on comments when you want your views changed is not the way to go.

@Avery CMV in a nutshell

there are some quite decent threads and quite decent people

Maybe it's partly that my view of CMV is through the filter of SubredditDrama

but the MUH PROTESTORS JUMPING ON CAR I CANT GO TO JOB people are not one of the decent people

@Avery hypothetical: replace "job" with "hospital". Does that change anything?

10:57 PM
Hmm

That's the example that always makes me uncomfortable with the idea of blocking traffic as part of a peaceful protest. The protesters can't distinguish traffic based on urgency, and it can end up trapping people for whom getting to their destination is objectively more important than the protest

user15026
@Avery I dunno, I understand the feeling of needing to do something to disrupt people to draw attention to your cause, but this sort of thing doesn't really endear people to you, and depending where people are headed (hospital, other medical places, other important things like job interviews or other life changing event things) can actually be a big problem

user15026
@murgatroid99 You phrased it better than I could, thank you :)

@murgatroid99 or if said person is a medical expert trying to get to their job

I can see how it can be problematic and how it can be not problematic at the same time
but I believe on nearly all peaceful protests, you should be able to communicate and get people to let you through. No one wants to cause a death on a peaceful protest.

user15026
10:59 PM
I get the need for peaceful protest, but when you block traffic, you're saying that the protested issue is has a greater need than any of the traffic on that street and that's a really hard judgement.

user15026
@Avery Should, yes, but it never works that way

@Avery The problem is that if you're behind 30 other cars, the only solution is to shout ahead 30 car lengths and then have them open up all traffic

user15026
because a) if you let one person through, everyone's going to take that - once you start the flow of traffic how do you stop it b) how do you judge what is "worthy" of going through

yes I can totally see one side
but on the other side you can't really protest on only sidewalks can you

@Avery yes you can

user15026
11:00 PM
@Avery I don't see why not?

user15026
Like i get it, road is maximum disruption

user15026
but it's also dangerous and disruptive in ways that aren't necessarily helpful.

user15026
Not all disruption is good disruption

i see plenty of people protesting on the sidewalk

I mean on a big scale protest you have so so many people that keeping people only on sidewalks might not be possible

11:02 PM
That leads to the question of what the goal of your protest is. If you put people in danger and get people pissed off at your cause, is that worth what you wanted the protest to accomplish?

then go pull a permit for a for it so that police can direct traffic around it

counterpoint: corrupt govt, won't give permit for your cause.

Personally, I lose a lot of sympathy for a cause when it looks like they are what I see as callous about creating a dangerous situation on the road

like, pride here was denied permit for 3 years in a row now, EVEN on streets with no car traffic.

if disruption wasn't okay, we wouldn't have strikes
incidentally strikes were like very high on the list of things to be banned by fascism #lawandorder

Protest is one of those ridiculously complex things - I want to be like YES FIGHT THE SYSTEM RESIST MAKE CHANGE but then I just...I worry when the fighting for change can potentially lead to a dangerous situation

user15026
(I mostly don't ever want to see anyone get killed the way that woman did with the person driving into the protesters, and I get that that doesn't stop if the road is clear but it just terrifies me)

well, this thing actually helped change my views on protests
though I'd still attend them, I'd be a bit more careful.

user15026
I want to see change made I just hate knowing that my loved ones and friends could get hurt for it

user15026
and yes I know if there was no risk there'd be no need for the protest

user15026
11:10 PM
blergh

user15026
this stuff makes my head hurt

I imagine being in a car, and discovering that a protest has blocked off the road several car lengths ahead of me. I have no idea when it's going to dissolve, there are cars all around me so I can't just drive away, and I don't want to just leave my car in the middle of the road. So I'm basically trapped in a small metal box for an unknown duration. Even without the issue of needing urgent medical care, that seems pretty scary

That's not a situation unique to this event though and happens on the regular, so we kind of have to have a way to deal with it even sans-protests
Which doesn't make it not A Thing, but eh

I know traffic jams and highway accidents cause similar situations, but I think there's a psychological difference between traffic jams, which generally dissolve on their own, accidents, which you would expect that someone is trying to fix, and a protest, which someone is causing on purpose.

Usually in those situations you don't know what the cause is though, so from that perspective it's just the Frustrating Unknown
Though I must admit the time I was stuck for three hours waiting for the toll at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, knowing did not make it better >_>

11:26 PM
Maybe it's simpler than that: traffic jams are bad. Inflicting them on people on purpose is not OK

In any case it's never ok to just try to power your way through a traffic jam, regardless of the cause

Unless you believe that you are in immediate danger

also I didn't actually read the article (sorry)
okay I read it, it really is just what the title says

user15026
11:42 PM
@Unionhawk truth.

@murgatroid99 I promise you, there's no way you'll get somewhere faster trying to power through traffic
It's at best an excercise in futility
At worst 2nd degree murder

@Unionhawk "I need to get to my destination faster" is a different problem from "I am in immediate danger"

I mean even if you're in immediate danger, putting other people in immediate danger seems kind of counterproductive. Unless something's hunting you and will instead go for them but that also raises some uh, issues

If you're in immediate danger why did you risk traffic vs employing emergency services which are explicitly designed to tell people to get the fuck out of the way

sorry for stumbling into this convo late, but are we really discussing how awful it is to be INCONVENIENCED by a protest?

11:52 PM
That's one of the most basic rules of the road, "if you hear a siren give way"

@TimStone OK, to make my point more concretely, here's a hypothetical scenario: a bunch of neo-Nazis carrying guns assemble in the street in one of these protests that blocks traffic. You, visibly a member of some minority, are in a car near the protesters. Some of them see you and react as you might expect neo-Nazis to do.

user15026
@GodEmperorDune I don't think that's exactly it, no

user15026
We are discussing how blocking the road can cause harm to people if they need to get through in, say, an emergency situation.

I don't buy that there's a real scenario where you're in immediate danger and you're also traveling to not immediate danger in your car

user15026
@Unionhawk I'm more thinking about if they don't let emergency vehicles through

11:54 PM
@GodEmperorDune Hypothetical: you're a surgeon paged to provide medical help to someone in the ER. Your passage is blocked by a surprise protest, and you can't make it in time to help.

@BlueBarren I mean
that everything happens with teens everywhere probably

@murgatroid99 so this protest that is large enough to block all ways for me to get to the hospital sprung up in between the time i left my house and got partway to the hospital?

so why is only one nation affected
#tinfoil
also how is "enlarged testicular veins" blocking people from entering military?

that scale doesn't make sense

@GodEmperorDune It just has to be close enough to you that it's too late to detour

user15026
11:58 PM
...and this is why discussing hypotheticals like this is frustrating

@Ash yes

user15026
I'm not even sure how we got here

user15026
so instead, since it's 8pm EST, I'm going to head home and try to figure out why I cant hear right out of one ear.

What about the reality where Hitler cured cancer

@murgatroid99 if this is an urban area, this is no different that going my usual router, only to find that a street fair is blocking several blocks, so i go out of my way to detour

11:59 PM
The answer is still don't run people over

user15026
@Unionhawk That is an excellent answer.

user15026
Running people over is never an answer to anything.
