@Mr.Normal both of those are interesting points! If you want them to be seriously considered, can you post a new meta question and tag it with sandbox so we can have a more fleshed out discussion about this? — scohe001 yesterday

Welcome to IPS. That sounds like a good problem to ask about here, but we need more specifics. For example, you can provide more example problems: "how do i talk about X (my hobby) with complete strangers" or "how to start casual conversation with people i just met" — aaaaaa 19 mins ago

As written this is a rather broad question that seems to focus more on your fear of being weird than any particular interpersonal skill. Can you be more specific about the challenges that you face when talking socially with strangers? — sphennings 3 hours ago

This is definitely the right answer. If I'm interested in buying a hybrid car, why should go circuitously about the seller asking him about petrol, and batteries, and renewable power sources, or about how much I actually enjoy hybrid cars? I'm just asking if car X is hybrid. I am Italian, and in Italy no customer would have a problem asking, and no seller answering, such a question. — DaG 6 hours ago

I wish I would have read this answer 10 years ago. I would have gone a lot easier on my GF (now ex-WF) who frequently blitzed me with such hypothetical questions. My response was almost always to shut the question down as absurd. I don't think this realization would have saved our marriage, but it would have made me a nicer guy. — Michael_B 12 hours ago

Find out what I told you to. Send out a demand letter via certified mail/registered mail. I suppose you could talk to him/her by phone, but since he/she lied once already, you can't fully rely on that mode of communication. Then, if there is still no answer, sue in small claims court. In my State, there is a waiting list and it takes 4 months to go through Small Claims court. But I have no idea how long it would take in your State. Are there any local/city government organization that could arbitrate your issue? That might be the quickest. — Stephan Branczyk 13 hours ago

What did your lease say? How long did you stay in that apartment? You shouldn't be charged for normal wear and tear. Do you know why you had to move out early? Did he have someone else move in early? Try to find out if someone moved in right after you did. If someone was in such a hurry to move in, it's possible that the landlord didn't even need to paint anything (in which case, asking you to pay for something he didn't even do is fraud). Any new tenant should be willing to talk to you. After all, they'll most likely run into the same problem with the deposit when they move out themselves. — Stephan Branczyk 14 hours ago

@ArwenUndómiel - I'm not sure why you singled me out with your request for more info. I don't see any of the other answers going out of their way to explain 1) why they think that theirs is a good idea. 2) Why they say to take their recommended course of action. 3) and especially NOT: What was their thought process. I'll try to edit this to address your concerns, but I also feel that parts are already addressed: "Why do you say to take this course of action?" because as stated, asking by phone will allow him to be anonymous and avoid possible face-to-face confrontation. Hey, thanks for the answer! Can you please explain exactly why you think that this is a good idea? Why do you say to take this course of action? What’s the thought process behind this answer? As this currently stands, this is essentially a “Try this!” answer. We require that answers provide some sort of explanation for why they are suggesting this solution, and unfortunately, at the moment this answer doesn't appear to do that. — Arwen Undómiel 15 hours ago

As horrific as this situation is, it's really a "what should I do?" question, which is out of scope here. This seriously needs the help of competent professionals, not well-intentioned strangers on the internet.
