@bighouse I'm mainly just saying to avoid saying things that are emotionally satisfying in the moment but which might make it look like you are the one being unreasonable. At the moment, you seem in the right. He owes you money and you want him to pay it or at least tell you when he is going to pay it. If he doesn't, you will want to go to a court of equity for redress. And a court of equity requires clean hands. You aren't a legal expert, so you won't know when you step across that line. So stay away from it entirely. — Brythan 1 min ago

I don't think that the question scenarios being impossible have nothing to do with it. What if the question was "If I would die now, would you ever love someone else?". I don't know why anyone would ask such a question, and if you wish him to answer "no", then you probably are very insecure and selfish. Of course OP should recognize that his SO is insecure, but I'm not sure why you're trying to make it seem like OP is wrong for not answering "right" to ridiculous questions. — FINDarkside 21 secs ago

The last point you make, about being diagnosed with Autism, is in fact one of the most important points. Two of the side effects of Autism is an inability to see how our actions impact those around us and also to become obssesed or fixated on somthing. Right now your fixation is your new friendship, in your head it is just platonic and you will struggle to understand how your wife doesn't see it that way. But you will also struggle to see subtle hints. To an outsider, despite Katie's insitance otherwise, it would look like she may want more and you may be giving indicators without meaning to — Richard C 1 min ago

The problem isn't "her take on the concept" per se, it's that she's expecting an unrealistic answer. In-universe in Dr Who, we have two immortal characters: the Doctor, and Captain Jack. I forget if The Doctor was in love with anyone for that long before a regeneration, but he typically finds new friendships and sometimes loves (e.g. Rose). Jack Harkness definitely did fall in love for a long time at least once (not 60 years, though), but eventually found new love with other people. OTOH, we have Roman Centurionified Rory who waited 2000 years for Amy, but he knew she was alive. — Peter Cordes 1 min ago

@Flo, there is nothing the OP can do to make them accept his decision. That is completely up to them. So while this isn't an answer, it does provide an answer to make the current situation go away. Then when they are older, the argument that they'll change their minds, or that they don't know what they're doing doesn't hold as much weight. Perhaps too, the in-laws will already have children from their other offspring and it won't be as important to them. While it may not be an ideal solution, it may offer some relief from the incessant questioning. — CramerTV just now

Note it is very important that your spouse knows what you actually want if you go with this approach. For example if your spouse hears this and thinks you want kids later when in fact you never want kids. That could lead to awkward problems down the line once your spouse is ready to have kids and realizes you do not. — Anketam 1 min ago

Ah, glad to see an answer that says "your parents have a valid perspective, too." One point I'll add is that having children is a temporary window -- a long one, to be sure, but it'll eventually close for good. You might not even care when it closes, but eventually, most do. if OP says some of their arguments are hurtful, that is out of bounds, but the general idea of your elders encouraging you to think critically about a choice that only gets more difficult and dangerous with age should NOT be considered out of bounds. — bvoyelr 35 secs ago

You call it "authorship slight" I call it an error from myself or conference side. You may not believe, but I did not do that intentionally and as a friend he was supposed to know that. Even if we were no friends, it was a talk (not a conference paper) and for a talk no one gets credit except for the speaker. He knows that. And I have never dictated authorship and will not do if I become a supervisor. I assume by dictating you mean the order of authors and not removing my co-supervisor's name and in that case, my supervisor already mentioned that I made a reasonable decision. — Opt 1 min ago

Not sure if this could really help, as most of the people (at least that I've met) that tend to pressure others to have kids, don't see with good eyes the fact that the couple in question wants to "enjoy" their time first (i.e. travelling, studying, etc) as it is considered by those people as somewhat selfish. That being said, I can't really see in the question what you've already tried... When family members bring this stuff up, what exactly do you say, and how? Why are you fearing conflict? Has something already happened? Are these always the same family members? This is too broad. There are so many different types of friends, friendships and ways of obtaining them that we can't know where you are coming from and what you mean/want by a friendship. Also, are you asking about how to meet new people? How to act after you meet people? How to act after meeting particular people to accomplish particular goals? If you want us to try and answer in relation to one of the examples you gave you need to give more details and outline your goals. I am voting to close, but that said... meetup.com — Jesse 1 min ago
