After being heavily downvoted and finally deleted the MSE University idea post on the Meta MSE, a severe suspension, and being converted the original MSE University room to a dump room, I have decided to create a new room for the MSE University idea.

user84215
During my suspension period, I was accused of being tyrant not listenening to others. But as I said in my original post, which has been deleted, that room has been created for people who are interested in this idea (It seemed that downvoting and deleting my post and suspending me are not enough for my punishment).

user84215
Now, I emphasize that this room has bean created only for people who are interested in this idea and want to develop it by giving constructive suggestions.

user84215
The previous room, whose name has been changed to Planning MSE University by unknowns, has been devoted to criticizing, scorning and insulting me and my ideas. The irrelevent posts will be moved to the Planning MSE University.

Please first read the following posts completely and then give your suggestions.

user84215
Let us construct a university in the MSE. Like other universities it would have classes (chat rooms), staffs (professors, directors, president, ...), research groups and etc. We would also have Bachelor and PhD programs in it and give graduated students Bachelor and PhD degrees. The following idea is so raw and may change basically by your helps.

First, I think, we should select a committee to make final decisions about the education instructions and other guidelines which are needed to manage this organization (All can suggest their opinions, but we need final decisions).

user84215
Second, each course would be held in separate rooms. For each class there are several students and a teacher (it is better to say "tutor"). The tutor would not present study materials as traditional classes do; instead, the tutor would determine an available source (It may be free or not, but it must be available for the students for free) and want the students to study a specific sections till next session.
In each session, which may last for an hour (it would depend on the tutor), the tutor would answer the students' questions or present interesting or important points or examples; the st

Third, for each course students would be evaluated by the tutor (It may be done by written examination, oral examination, giving projects or ...) to be determined who pass the course.

user84215
Fourth, For each program (Bachelor or PhD), the relevant instructions and information about required courses and proposals and etc would be determined by the committee.

@aminliverpool your idea it's great. Since I came to this site MSE I've notice that there are a lot of brilliant people, they give you an answer of a hard problem within minutes. It's awesome how they come up with those ideas/tricks. Therefore they would be excellent as teachers, so your idea would work perfectly. I don't see any disadvantages of your idea.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 5 at 7:23, by user400188
@Anneliset. I had similar thoughts about it: however we must consider the tutors. Is it fair to have a group of people teach routinely without pay? Some of these tutors may even have university jobs already (I know a few who dedicate a small amount of time here and help willing listeners).

@user400188 you may not know but there are like 10 users ( that I know) that spent their whole day here on MSE, but, what are they doing here the whole day?? They EDIT questions, answer questions, review questions, close questions, critique questions, etc. In my opinion the one activity that really matters is answering questions. So instead of editing,..., they might be teaching math to a small group of undergraduate students.

@user400188 I'm pretty sure those 10 users that I mentioned before don't work, otherwise, how is it possible for them to be all day here?

Amin: I confess that I don't quite understand the purpose of this room as it fits into the broader goal of MSEU. It seems that you want to push most of the decisions onto the committee (a good idea, IMO), but since the committee does not seem to exist yet, the room can't be a place for official business [yet?]. Is it fair to say that this is a public brainstorming session?

user84215

I want to provide ideas but it seems there is so little in the way of existing structure for me to grasp hold of, that it's hard to know what to say.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 5:03, by Eric Stucky
I will say this: the phrase "give graduated students Bachelor and PhD degrees" is... alarming. I'm pretty sure I know what you mean here— you want to give people certificates that they can put on resumés or CVs, but you and I cannot give Bachelor's degrees; there are actually very rigorous standards for doing so and this could very quickly get into legal trouble.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 5:05, by Eric Stucky
Or even if legality is taken off the table, we don't want to mislead a more naïve student into thinking we're giving them an accredited degree when we are not.

Something that might be worth thinking about is how we would "hold courses". The MSE chat room format is pretty poorly suited for teaching math, honestly, for at least two reasons that come to mind immediately: permanence (and thus implicitly, expectations for the students to 'perform') and one-dimensionality (at least we can use LaTeX but we don't want to expect competence with TikZ just to do something as trivial as discussing congruence theorems for triangles.)

I would very much like to hear ideas about managing the academic calendar. There is no particularly good reason to use the same calendar as a traditional university, although I don't immediately see any good reason to do something radically different. In any case, if the tutors have some flexibility with how long courses can last, or if courses last for different lengths of time, keeping tabs on progress etc. seems tricky.

I think your second point from the OP is oddly prescriptive. This philosophy looks very much like an Inquiry-Based Learning approach, or a Flipped Classroom model. Which is great, but it seems strange to be talking about this in the same breath as such massive, institution-defining concepts as the third and fourth points.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 5:27, by Eric Stucky
(But as long as we're talking models: may I throw my Mastery-Based Learning hat into the ring?)

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 5:34, by Eric Stucky
Also, a thornier issue, somewhat more ideological: if MSEU claims to be "for all" then it must in particular be for disabled students. Clearly on an institutional level this is 'easy' to deal with, but providing these students with the benefits of the informal sessions that you suggest at the end of the second point, would also be our responsibility.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 5:35, by Eric Stucky
Independent of the disability concerns, serious attention needs to be paid to this informal aspect of the university. This is because it provides what I see as the only real advantage MSEU would offer over independent learning strategies— such as, say, watching Khan academy videos for two hours a day and asking questions on MSE proper).

It appears I found something to say, regardless :P

Also, the fact that you have not yet responded reminds me of another point about accessibility: the demographics of the tutors, specifically in which time zones they live. That will of course naturally determine when they are available, which in turn will have a strong influence on where their students will live.

user84215
in Planning MSE University, Aug 7 at 6:12, by Eric Stucky
Anyway, you may notice that these mostly aren't suggestions: I guess I'm just throwing ideas out there that I see as a little more specific than what you have in OP to try to facilitate the discussion.

user84215
@EricStucky Thanks for your constructive suggestions. First, I do not want to impose my thoughts on others. I think we are here to find people who are interested in this project, and then we will select a committee to make final decisions (But everyone can say his/her suggestions). When I see someone says his/her opinion, I also comment on his/her opinion. I think this is not bad since we need such conversations to reach the best way (My suggestions have no priority with respect to others).
Second, By saying "give graduated students Bachelor and PhD degrees" I do not mean "to give people ce

Q: What is the difference between the MSE University and other MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) like Khan Academy, Coursera, ...?

user84215
A: The MOOCs usually present their courses in video lectures with some pdf files and want the participants to do some assignments and also post their questions and issues in discussion forums (They are not online rooms). The lecturers have no direct relationship to the participants.

user84215
They are completely different with the MSE University. As I said in the original post, there is no one to present course materials; the students and the tutor can discuss with each other online; it is like a university having organized educational system (not just offering some courses), bachelor and phd programs, research groups and other things that a current university has.

user84215

user84215

Q: Why should people work as teachers in this university for free without earning any rewards?

user84215
A: As I said in my original post, it is better to say "tutor" rather than "teacher". Sometime I saw a heavily upvoted post on the MSE that asked: "Why do you post answers on math.stackexchange?" The most heavily upvoted comments replied: "helping others" I wonder why this sense of altruism does not work here.

user84215
This project does not need people who learn, teach or help others mainly for earning degrees, money, rewards, or ... . This project is only for people whose main concerns are learning math and doing research in mathematics (The history of science indicates that the revoutionary discoveries have been obtained by these people).

user84215
As I said in the original post, each tutor may spend at most 3 hour per week on this project (I think for some people it is a small amount of time in comparison to their spending time for downvoting, closing, deleting, ... math questions on the MSE and saying lol, xd, ... to each other in chat rooms).

user84215
.

user84215
12:24 PM
Q: The MSE is a Q&A site. Would this project not contradict with the primary goal of this site? And in this platform one can only ask, answer and post questions and comments; would this site with its restrictions be suitable for this project? Why do you not create a new website without such restrictions for it?

user84215
A: I think the best mothod for learning science and how to discover it is self-study and ask and discuss the questions and issues with others; this is the philosophy of creating the MSE University. This project would completely conform to the primary goals of the MSE. This would also be a Q&A educational system. In practice, the only difference between this university and the main site of the MSE is that in this project asking and answering questions would be organized.

user84215
So we do not need any extra facilities to perform this project. Why should we leave this great community and create another website and then then advertise for that while the platform of this website is sufficient for the project?

user84215
.

user84215
Q: There also exist many questions and issues about this project. Do you not think this project is practically impossible?

user84215
.

user84215
12:27 PM
A: As I said in the original post, it is a raw idea. We are here to give our opinions about it and see whether we can convert impossibilities to possibilities or not. If we succeed in performing this idea, then we will win; if we do not, then we will also win since we would gain a new experience.

user84215
Most novel ideas seem impossible at first (like traveling to the moon). Of course, there would be a lot of difficulties in this way (like suspension of your account, scorning you and your ideas, ...). However, I have not given up yet.

This was renamed to avoid confusion while figuring out if the idea is something the community wants to do. Splitting the discussion and confusing users won't help
I need to go for now, but I'll be back on later to take a look at things, but please use this room for discussion. If it looks like something that the community is interested in, one of the Math mods can unfreeze the other room or change the name of this one as they see appropriate

@MathematicsAminPhysics I think you'll find the key distinction here is that having posts that can be consumed by many (the goal of SE) is why people find it valuable. A small amount of effort can help many people. With tutoring, it requires a lot of effort to help one person with little persistent value

@user462339 Haha, yeah. The key to making my rooms somewhat flourish is keeping them open to many topics, letting them range in conversations from casual to serious stuff, though mostly casual... people do not want to come to rooms with a "laser like focus"
@MathematicsAminPhysics Feels a bit too constraining IMO

@SimplyBeautifulArt that can work either way though
chat rooms are designed to be more topical in SE's chat system
there are a few exceptions that are more general and they tend to be more vibrant, but the offline chat system makes categorization important for people finding the right info
it really depends on the goal of the chat, either can work
@MathematicsAminPhysics how does that differ from the normal Q/A system. Tags allow for organization and many reviewers work tirelessly to help keep things organized
@MathematicsAminPhysics indeed

@AJHenderson Yes, that is true. What I meant was that this room would need to have a certain degree of openness to the topics.

2:43 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt ah yes, shutting down concern even if not initially presented constructively won't really help. Still need to look at valid concerns and try to come up with ideas to work around it
and there are certainly some hard concerns to address
scalability probably being the largest
since pretty much every high rep, knowledgeable user I know (myself included) primarily answers questions because we know they'll not only answer it for the current individual, but all future users that come across it

@AJHenderson very much true

it's also why I use SE rather than Quora. Quora lacks the organization (ie, gestapo reviewers) that SE has, which makes it slightly more asker friendly, but ultimately, it's far less useful in the long term, scalable sense
because it lacks the necessary organization and discoverability

Yes... but I don't think these are really concerns of @MathematicsAminPhysics . At least not yet.

and outside of things like the way that Khan academy and similar try to approach it, I don't really see a good way to work around it

@MathematicsAminPhysics I still do not like the idea of a schedule.
@MathematicsAminPhysics I honestly do not see this as necessary. If someone is doing something out of line, people simply don't have to listen.

2:51 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt it could possibly work, having a schedule, if you could generate enough interest, could provide the scalability for interactive stuff

On the other hand, with a "board" that "keeps people in check", you will likely have conflicts.

I suspect it wouldn't work well given the way the SE community is as a whole though
@SimplyBeautifulArt yeah, the lack of facilities for that is also a problem
running an election would be hard, and not running an election runs very counter to the principles of the SE community
so even that itself is a big challenge to overcome

Honestly, just in general other people turning down other people they do not agree with should work fine in my opinion. If enough people disagree with someone, and that person is being disruptive to the environment, we can get a mod to kick/ban from the room.

@SimplyBeautifulArt yeah, I was more commenting in terms of the idea of some kind of committee would be difficult to implement with the facilities available
I think it can be worked around
but it's probably by working around the need for a committee
the whole thing about the idea of it being a Q/A driven university makes me curious though as I'm wondering how it would differ from the normal Q/A site. He mentioned wanting it to be more organized, but I'm not sure what he meant

1 hour later…
4:26 PM
@amWhy they weren't moved to the trash. They were moved from elsewhere, to here.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Okay... got it!

@amWhy aminliverpool had split the room and made another room. I just undid the split since it didn't help to have the discussion split over two rooms
so I brought them back and closed the other room

@AJHenderson I see. No worries. That makes sense, very much so. I hadn't know aminliverpool had (re)-created MSE University.
