Morning :)
07:11
morning
MiG
MiG
That bad eh? :P
Had a couple of shitty days, ate something that didn't agree with me... But that's all finally gone today \o/
Did find session gone after waking laptop from hibernation this morning, but I suppose it's a clean slate
And found out that amazon.nl has expanded its collection, so now I can finally order a set of travel scales that would have otherwise been hit with a hefty import fee coming from amazon.com :x
07:24
It's wedding day. I don't like wedding day.
Currently stripping a load of 'pailletten' from a shirt I bought XD
MiG
MiG
07:37
@Tinkeringbell you mentioned the Big Day was coming :P :D
@Tinkeringbell had to look that one up :x
@MiG It's ugly XD
@MiG If you have any last minute survival tips... I have flint and steel, a good knife, solid boots, a change of dry clothes, a way of making a quick shelter, some rope, and food already....
MiG
MiG
@Tinkeringbell 4l of bottled water, bow and arrow, compass, physical map, some cash, poncho
07:52
Oooh, good ones!
Though I'm notoriously bad at map reading XD
MiG
MiG
Alternatively a hip flask with high proof spirits of your choice, if you intend to survive the ordeal for a while :P
Next upcoming wedding for me will be in Morocco, gonna tie some sightseeing to that :)
Not sure how well hip flasks are received in Morocco btw :D
Oh definitely a hard no on any alcohol with family around.
MiG
MiG
Not even beers and wines? At a wedding? :(
WHAT BARBARIANISM IS THIS????
No. Dad's side of the family definitely isn't safe to be drunk around.
MiG
MiG
eh? how so? :x
07:54
They will probably have any, I just won't be having any.l
@MiG They're assholes, which means that if I get even the tiniest bit tipsy, there will probably be a scene because I can't bite my tongue and pretend to be a doormat, and I will end up getting blamed for it
MiG
MiG
gah :(
I can see why you're not looking forward to this one :|
(I am never looking forward to any weddings, this is just another irritating factor XD)
MiG
MiG
ditto tbh... Although the two upcoming ones will be different cultures, so I'm half curious about those :)
apparently gf will disappear the entire preceding day for a henna ceremony... Not sure what the guys are supposed to be doing though
I don't know either... get a stripper and make crass jokes?
MiG
MiG
08:10
I'm guessing that's one way to quickly get thrown out of the country :x
Well then you don't have to go to the wedding!
win-win XD
MiG
MiG
Yeah, and then I also don't get to see Morocco, and try Moroccan food :*(
08:33
You don't have to go to a country to taste its food XD
And I'm sure you can see Morocco on TV.
MiG
MiG
09:10
I'm sorry, but no :P
I love experiencing places, especially after two years of being stuck at home :)
I know you do ;)
That's why it's so fun to say stuff like that to you :P
MiG
MiG
:*(
ENJOY YOUR WEDDING
:P
Hahaha NEVER XD
MiG
MiG
When does it start? :)
Or are you already there and is everyone wondering why you're pounding away at your phone? :P
Nah. I don't know what time it starts, I thought it was something like 15:30.
I lost the card.
Mom said last evening that she'd talk with dad about who drives and if they would come pick me up or if I had to drive myself there... But didn't reply yet. I sent her a message this morning, but she's working now.
MiG
MiG
09:18
Ah, at least it's not a full day event then :)
the Moroccan thing is... Two days even for gf :x
I'd be dead after an hour an two, I guess.
MiG
MiG
tbh, the only thing that would annoy me is having to wear formal stuff... But I think the invite said something like smart casual, so I guess I'll be fine :)
Just dreading the 38C that is apparently common that time of the year :(
gf is worried I will melt :D
Yeah, that's definitely not a survivable temperature.
38 or higher is called a fever.
MiG
MiG
09:43
:D
good training for India in december though
I'm not sure if it works that way, unless you stay in that kind of heat until december XD
You will probably 'de-acclimatize' once back here XD
MiG
MiG
I'm not planning to grow gills or something :P just seeing which strategies work for me
And I've been to Shanghai and Pretoria in july, survived those too :)
Especially Shanghai, that was two weeks or something at 100% humidity
10:28
Yeah, so not my thing. I love the wind today, house is cooling down again... had it at 19 last Tuesday, but it went up again even with everything closed... yesterday it was 21 when I came home :/
MiG
MiG
10:41
@Tinkeringbell I figured yeah :P
watching this one atm, the bizarre thing that royal house members get high military ranks without the required education and field experience
apparently he just contacted them and they gave him a position, then he became an officer in 11 months, where it normally takes 1.5 to 4 years o_O
Not just the royal house members, there was an article a while back that some people also use their influence to get others into these ranks.
I guess I don't really care all that much, it's royalty, they're supposed to walk around with a lot of titles and medals XD
MiG
MiG
this used to be the main reason wars were bumbling affairs when it came to strategy and tactics... with zee russians actively invading places right now I really don't want hobbyists commanding anything
@Tinkeringbell they're not imo, literally nobody elected them for any of that
Heh, no, that's another thing royalty is supposed to do... not be elected :P
MiG
MiG
world would be a better place if we could get rid of all of these - not just 'royal' people but dictators and anyone else who has appointed themselves and their offspring for eternity
it's the 21st century, like with many things I ask myself why we still have these around o_O
@MiG Because it's the 21st century and people from that century are at the same time electing stuff like Trump?
(not saying royalty should have any more power/money than they do now... just that democracy isn't everything either XD)
MiG
MiG
10:52
@Tinkeringbell that is one of the many things I have been asking myself... Are we devolving again?
I mean, history is full of periods of progress, prosperity and stability followed by dark ages with conflict, ignorance and poverty, perhaps we're heading to one of those again
I don't know, and to be honest I try not to think too much about it. I see stuff that I like, I see stuff that I dislike... but I would need to be a historian looking back to know the answer :)
If there even is an answer.
MiG
MiG
Usually seems to be related to selfish men getting their way
Even historians are often biased by the mores of their time.
MiG
MiG
@Tinkeringbell True, 500 years from now we can probably label this period when we know where it's heading... climate change and inability to act will definitely be one theme
@Tinkeringbell of course, you'll always have to consider the eye of the beholder - but with more sources available about this period that will survive the test of time, it'll be more difficult to paint radically differing pictures than it was before
You're assuming that stuff will survive :P
Digital media degrades, becomes indecipherable...
MiG
MiG
10:56
not all of it, but there will certainly be a hell of a lot more fragments than we have from 2000 years ago
I wouldn't be too sure about it.
MiG
MiG
you're making it sound as if there will be absolutely nothing left, I seriously doubt that
there are definitely fragile media, but apart from active conservation methods also so much of it that some is bound to survive
and then there are actual conservation methods, vaults of many kinds that contain various works
if there's a catastrophe it of course depends on the nature of it how much of those will survive - another Chicxulub will reduce that by quite a bit :P
oh ffs, speaking of data fragility... I replaced two disks in my 6x8TB ZFS2 array, and now FOUR have gone offline
if that didn't happen simultaneously, that's 20TB of data gone
not sure wtf is going on, I checked the hardware yesterday and it seemed fine - including the all important cooling fans
@MiG Not nothing, but I do think people generally overestimate. Like I said, for much digital stuff it a.) degrades or b.) in a 1000 years, all sd-card readers will be broken :P
Also don't overestimate what is being archived. Stuff like the wayback machine is nice, but probably won't forever be archived, I bet at some point the info there will be lost.
If Twitter ever ceases to exist, you loose another load of information. A bit like how many kids had diaries when mom was young, but if you ask them now, no one kept those diaries so all that information about kids in the 60s/70s is lost.
MiG
MiG
11:31
once again, I am making NO claim that all of that will survive! But considering both the sheer volume of data, and the plethora of ways we store things, the same percentually small fraction will be a hell of a lot larger than what we have from 2000 years ago

@Tinkeringbell quick question: how do you add an url to a word in SE comments?
regular text [link text](link URL) regular text
MiG
MiG
Thanks :)
np. the same link formatting applies to chat and works in posts as well
MiG
MiG
In posts I usually use the gui, and I vaguely recall urls being placed at the bottom of the post and then referred to... I guess for posts there are two ways of posting urls?
indeed
13:26
@Mig thanks. I'll have to forward your link to my sister. I'm afraid my Dutch is pretty non-existent.
@MiG Now that I think about it, the issue may have been that she knew she could get it notarized in Holland, but our bank wasn't going to accept it. They tend to be pretty limited like nothing outside the USA exists.
MiG
MiG
@DaveG Google translate should get you the gist of it :)
@DaveG You'll have to contact your bank to ask them about notarizing abroad, maybe they can inform you what they accept
afaik fraud in general and with notaries in specific is extremely low in NL, so hopefully they'll accept it
transparency.org/en/cpi/2021 - #8 on the corruption perception index, if that means anything to banks though :)
@MiG In the particular case we are looking at right now it isn't the bank, so I think we will be ok. It's just that the bank we were dealing with was very, very inflexible. Rational discussion doesn't come into it... for this bank it was "here's our policy, done".

Sorry to hear :(

Q: Is it usual to speak to people who are not already looking at me?

SoldierOfMisfortuneI usually do not speak first to someone if they are not at least looking towards me (unless there is some urgent reason to). At work, people often speak to me when I am sitting at my desk, which means my back is to the door. When it's the start of the day and they are simply arriving at work and ...

19:35
@MiG sorry! I was rushing, making a card. Mom apparently didn't have any XD

For the happy couple? :)
No worries, Mythical helped out!

@MiG Exactly. I survived!
