Morning :)
Had a good weekend?
@Tinkeringbell Yes
@DaveG SORRY!
@JourneymanGeek Did anything fun?
MiG
MiG
missed dad's bday due to regular flu :(
@Tinkeringbell uh, no
usual weekend stuff :D
09:41
@MiG Ah yeah you mentioned that. I forgot... That sucks.
MiG
MiG
still not feeling great today, I guess I gotta ride it out
Yeah, that's usually the case with flu.
Can linger for a long while too, those feelings of 'not feeling great' (even though you no longer feel very sick either)
MiG
MiG
gotta say the hot coldrex that gf picked up does seem to help a lot
that lemon flavoured paracetamol stuff?
MiG
MiG
basically a powdered drink that combines a shot of paracetamol with an overdose of vitamin C
yeah
09:43
Ya, that's good.
+ hot fluids
MiG
MiG
well, any fluids really... sometimes when I'm really busy I forget to hydrate, so I guess I'm at risk of dehydration at all times
this really sucks for multiple reasons, also considering friday was the first day with almost zero restrictions
and of course vlad providing distractions, even though I don't live in Ukraine I can't help but being glued to the screen
the geopolitical implications of this invasion are huge :(
I've stopped the doomscrolling/watching. I'm limiting myself to the morning and evening news bulletins, mostly. Though it's not exactly working, as news filters in everywhere outside of those two things too XD
Like about Putin wanting the nukes to be ready.
MiG
MiG
that one
that's been my main focus... wondering if the guy will test NATO with a limited release, for example an SLBM on Kiev
actually, considering belarus has changed the constitution to remove any restrictions on nukes in its territory, they could just drive a truck up to the border and launch from there
Meh. F politicians and their displays of power. Things like this... they make me feel like a hermit crab that has outgrown its shell :P I need a bigger rock to stay under, until something happens that makes me need an even bigger rock :P
It's not like my opinions are going to stop anyone, or my thoughts and prayers will save any.
MiG
MiG
nyet
not sure what we could do as individuals... apart from maybe starting a REAL Kingsman private secret service and engaging in covert actions :P
09:53
Well have fun. That sounds too much like exercise to me.
Keep fit! Stab Tyrants!
@MiG Any use of nukes basically crosses a line
Besides, it makes him lose his figleaf that its a war of "liberation"
MiG
MiG
@JourneymanGeek the line to cross I'm concerned about is the one that causes others to join in on the party and release theirs
@JourneymanGeek If one of them manages to come over here and ring my doorbell, I'll consider it.
I think at that point, there won't be rocks big enough to hide under ;-)
MiG
MiG
@JourneymanGeek the fig leaf of "war of liberation" already got negated by a full scale invasion of the entire country (not just the donbass region and the capital), and plenty of civilian casualties
@Tinkeringbell that reminds me of that TV show I need to start watching, "only murders in the building" (yes, literally about three people that will only solve murders in their own building) :D
@Tinkeringbell well, it depends on how close you live to a major target I suppose - basically any significant military targets and large population centers
I think one murder in my building is too many
MiG
MiG
09:58
@JourneymanGeek the joke of that series is that there apparently a surprising number of those :D
@MiG I think least for now, its going to be conventional and increasingly indescriminate.
and uh, apparently he's basically just thrown chechens into the war, and possibly belarus...
MiG
MiG
@JourneymanGeek I would expect so too, but with putin you never know - as one analyst said, he may not use all his toys, but if he puts them on the table he's crazy enough to use them
@JourneymanGeek where's-my-cat kadyrov has committed forces yes
@MiG assuming someone dosen't decide he dosen't want mother russia as a large glass parking lot
@MiG ... you don't give someone a nickname like that and not explain it
@MiG so you have people who are obviously not russian or ukranian, wandering around
... is painting big Zs on your vehicles not obvious enough?
MiG
MiG
@JourneymanGeek he's pretty delusional at this point, been painting the ukrainians as fascists and committing genocide on the russian speaking population... even though the Ukrainian president is a jewish russian speaking guy :D
@JourneymanGeek this looked pretty funny, if it was meant as a very crude form of IFF... nothing stopping the Ukrainians from taking a spraycan and applying these to their vehicles :rolleyes:
@MiG or just shoot at anything with a big Z
@MiG Identification panels are a thing
buuuut
MiG
MiG
10:03
@JourneymanGeek btw, John Oliver's Last Week Tonight is a pretty damned good show, picks up one subject and with great hilarity gives you an overview of the topic... Very much worth watching
It is
I follow him on youtube
MiG
MiG
@JourneymanGeek just a theory at this point, they're probably expecting to link up with russian forces from different regions and want to prevent flak, considering both sides drive very similar vehicles
another theory was that it would help russian traffic controllers (similarly to the Normandy invasions in WW2) help direct regiments to the right zones
there were regular Zs, Zs with circles around them, squares etc
this was the Normandy invasion's aerial variant: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_stripes
10:25
Another theory I read was it would let them easily work out their forces from the ukranians...
only the Ukranians read the same playbook (as part of the USSR) + trained with the west (who've been planning to deal with a soviet invasion for years)
MiG
MiG
oh sorry, that's what I meant with IFF
hence the "considering both sides drive very similar vehicles"
@JourneymanGeek yep, and the russians were expecting to be welcomed with open arms, even though they're basically facing mass mobilisation, crazy former presidents running around with rifles and oh, everyone mass producing molotov cocktails
Wait, which former president is running around with rifles?
MiG
MiG
it might seem a bit futile against armour, but they can really slow things down - this is one of the things that helped the Finns withstand those same russians during the Winter War
what's his name, poroshenko?
Is he the one they tried to poison?
Oh! The last one
10:32
ah yeah i saw that
Unlike my avian co-mod, I do actually doom scroll a bit
:) I think there were fragments of people making molotov cocktails in the news here too. Didn't even have to doomscroll for that ;)

3 hours later…
13:45
@JourneymanGeek ?
@DaveG We moderate MSE together. He's a canine, I'm avian (see avatars ;) ). I said something about not doomscrolling earlier in the transcript.
@Tinkeringbell I was just wondering because there was a comment way earlier about "sorry DaveG" and I couldn't figure out what that was about???
@Tinkeringbell LOL just went back and figured it out... duh
Ah okay good. Jokes are funnier if they don't need explaining ;-)
@DaveG see what I replied to 😁
@JourneymanGeek yeah... I had forgotten. The advantage of getting older, you can hide your own Easter eggs.
That question really is kind of over the top. It reminds me a bit of dealing with my ex-wife. I would get raked over the coals over things that hadn't actually happened. It was "interesting".
MiG
MiG
14:00
@DaveG How do you go from there? hit yourself in the head and find a note saying 'find eggs' when you wake up?
@DaveG hence 'ex' :x
@MiG Yeah. Let's just say that being alone is infinitely better than being with the wrong person.
@MiG Just mean that sometimes I'll run into something like some fudge sauce that I bought and tucked away in a kitchen cabinet and it's a big surprise, even though I bought it a day ago :)
MiG
MiG
@DaveG agreed, got some personal experience there... We tried again after a couple of years but she'd gone worse :(
Current gf is fortunately pretty amazing, we've only been together for a little over two years, but thanks to covid we've passed the living together test with flying colours
@DaveG :D
@MiG The thought of running into my ex again makes my blood run cold. Fortunately I ended up meeting and eventually marrying a really really wonderful woman so it all worked out in the end.
@MiG I knew we were doing well when we did a 12 hour drive together, which normally would have me crazy after about 2 hours, and it was all just fine.
MiG
MiG
@DaveG Glad to hear :)
@DaveG Still got my own house, but I spend most of my time working remotely from her place, and we've recently booked our first long holiday weekend abroad... Looking forward to that :)
Looking at houses too, although that's mostly dependent on her finding a job closer to mine (I'm kinda tied to one place for the next couple of years)
14:27
@MiG fortunately we were very close together, we actually snowshoed one time from my neighborhood to her apartment building. So no hard decisions about where to live.
@MiG off to the gym... have a good one.
MiG
MiG
Right back atcha :)
