Q: How to start the interaction in one online meeting in a friendly manner?

user1620696This question is related to this other question of mine. I have always had some issues to start interactions. Things usually go smoother when the other part starts talking. But as in the situation I asked about in the other question there are times I need to start the interaction and I often end ...

Q: How can I tell someone "you've offended me" without offending them?

wwlI met this person on a dating app. We exchanged numbers and started texting. I was offended when (in my view) they demanded that I engage in conversation with them. How can I convey that I've been offended, without offending them? (Also, was it reasonable to feel offended?) Transcript: They: I'll...

Oh how I love developing stories that change their acceptance criteria three times in a week :/
IPS question: How do I complain about this properly during the retrospective :P

2 hours later…
13:09
@Tinkeringbell By bringing it up, including its potential consequences, either with hard data for such or a plan to measure them.
Morning.
@Sarov Yeah, I know... usually though, this is exactly the kind of thing that's dismissed as 'it can happen'... and saying that it happened thrice this year is still going to be dismissed as 'and, so?'
Hence, hard data is your friend!
In this case, it would work against me :P People will argue it's not happening often enough ;)
Well then you'd need to come up with a proposed solution, too, with a cost/benefit analysis.
I'll stick with just complaining to the people changing things XD
13:24
If you're not part of the solution... :P
I'm not. I just need to build what's in the criteria ;)
Isn't that part of the solution, though?
maaaaybe
Yeeees.
13:49
Okay well, it's fixed now... luckily this was just a matter of deleting some code :P
Ctrl-a+del
All patched up. Now all that's left to do is attend a meeting and hope it finishes early, because the males expect me to cook dinner for them and have it done by 5PM.
@Sarov Actually not all code ;)
Though that would solve A LOT of problems :)
@Tinkeringbell Exactly!
@Tinkeringbell Bread sandwiches.
@Sarov Oh, you don't want to know the exact drama's around food here XD Can't wait, in about a month's time I'll have the keys to my own apartment, I hope to be living there in 2.
Anyway, suggesting they just eat a sandwich... isn't going to work.
I mean. Now I do want to know.
14:05
@Sarov Basically, they boil down to parents having one rule: You eat what is served. Which means there's always bickering over what to eat, and how often to eat junkfood.
"I served bread sandwiches. Eat them."
Hah. That would fall under bickering over how often to eat junkfood. While not extremely unhealthy, we all need to eat healthier (more vegetables, lean meat, less carbohydrates) and bread sandwiches aren't that...
So tonight it will be 'I served broccoli and chicken, now eat it'.
(I will make some potatoes for the males because otherwise they'll get upset)
Broccoli sandwich, with broccoli instead of bread.
Microwave it first!
14:13
Yeah, because nuking food always does improve it.
Almost always.
(To be fair, broccoli does lend itself well to being steamed in a microwave... but most food doesn't really improve :P)
I like microwaving fried mozza sticks. They get all soggy.
My family thinks I'm insane.
That sounds a bit like microwaving bread with cheese that some people do over here... (I do that, the bread gets soggy but sometimes it's better than really dry bread :P)
Never tried it.
May have to.
14:20
It's basically the same for microwaving bread without cheese on top... It gets softer.
Not sure is the same then. These get actually soggy.

Q: What is the maximum interaction where saying goodbye is unnecessary in the US?

Gregory FurmanekOften when you meet people on the street you may opt to say "Hi" and then be on your way. To my understanding this is not considered a rude behavior. It is also common to greet someone have a bit of small talk and then say goodbye. I am looking for guidance at which point not saying goodbye would...

@ExtrovertedMainMan Inb4 "Marriage".
Is what brings us together...
in holy acrimony...
17:24
no, no, no, no
the next line is "today".
@Mithical According to what?
Been way too long since I've seen that.
lol
If matchmaking works out, I think at some point I will tell hypothetical future Mrs Geek... "YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS"
(If I end up dating again, by some wierd quirk of fate, then its a date movie :D )

Q: Why is it hard to get reputation points on Stack Exchange sites?

Anil LondonI feel like I should be extra nice to others on these Stack Exchange websites. Granted it's not a discussion forum. However it seems too easy to vote negatively on the Stack Exchange websites bearing in mind it is a privilege to vote at all. Often a commenter will not even properly understand the...

18:46
@ExtrovertedMainMan Self-referential question, but not in the way the OP expected...
@JourneymanGeek Wait... so you'd marry someone who hadn't ever watched The Princess Bride??
@AnilLondon Hullo.
@Sarov hello
As an aside about your question, I do get where you're coming from. I tried to enter into English.SE a couple times, but decided to give up after my second closure.
The main difference being that when I posted comments asking/clarifying about the closure, I got radio silence.
Had my comments been addressed, then the se would have been functioning properly, imo. Including the closures (assuming they were valid, which I still doubt today).
19:01
@Sarov Tried meta?
@Sarov Yes it's better if it's addressed. I agree with you
@Tinkeringbell Nah, didn't think of that at the time.
@Sarov Could still do it :P
Hmm. Could, I suppose. I'd just have to work up the effort to care again. :P
@Sarov Those are some very good points of view. It really feels hard to have other contributors judge the questions so ruthlessly all the time
19:05
Ehh. I still think the 'harsh' is in your head. A close vote just means 'we don't think the site will meet its stated goals well by accepting answers to this'.
@Sarov okay well that makes sense at least
I throw out close votes like candy on pmse, because so many incoming questions are for software recommendations or homework questions. The former get a stock 'this is off topic' message, while the latter I leave a comment asking the OP to reword it to something broadly-applicable.
Sometimes for the latter, the OP even does, and thus I retract the close vote.
That's an instance of the site working properly.
For the former, yeah, it kind of sucks that we just can't help them at all. But if we did try to help them, pmse would be flooded with aged questions suggesting to use outdated software, and the quality of the site itself would go down.
A close vote is the only option.
@Sarov it's very good to hear all of that information from you. Thank you.
It's a definite balancing act between being welcoming and creating a useful repo of knowledge. But as much as it sucks to get downvotes or close votes, SE needs those things. Or else it'll just devolve into Youtube comments or Reddit.
@AnilLondon No problem.
@Sarov the positivity arrived in the end as it was hoped for. I'm pleased.

That is what I found upon searching 'how to use aspnet_regiis to encrypt web.config'
Me: "How to do X?"
Question title: "How to do X?"
Question Summary: "Everyone knows how to do X, but how to do Y given X?"

That is an excellent example of a difficult question to think about. Yeah Sarov it's not easy.
