A J
Afternoon. :P
08:43
Hi
Colleagues are trying to convince me to come to the work party tonight
Are they being successful? :P
But it's far away (at least 150 km from home), there's lots of people I don't know, it's probably going to be loud and busy, it's in an unfamiliar place, in a town I don't know... The only plus side is there will be food. But I have food at home too. So free food. It's not convincing me.
Ah. Well, 'I have other plans tomorrow. 150km from home is really to far, I'd be home too late. Maybe next time' :P
They went "It's going to be fun!". I told them, "You're assuming I think parties are fun. I don't think parties are fun.". That worked.
2
'maybe next time' always works for me ;) Either I go, or I don't and they stop asking eventually ;)
Yours is good too! :D
08:53
@Belle xD
Hello people :)
@Belle 150km :O
Here is how I feel today: My body hurt, I feel sick and I don't want to take some sick days because I feel like I have been taking too much of them already. So yay! /s
@Chump Give me a cat, would you?
Oh great, @chump isn't even here! :"( :"(
@CaldeiraG <3
Thanks @Cald :D
ugh I hate office parties
08:57
@Ælis you're welcome :D
@kscherrer Only extrovert people don't hate them. Too bad I'm an introvert too...
@Ælis story of my life.
@kscherrer Do you want to join the grumpy people group? We could be grumpy together!
What level of pain and unease is enough to warrant a sick day? Can I really be productive like this? These are questions I ask myself at least weekly
@Ælis yes, yes I do.
@kscherrer Also "Am I making my job and future promotion at risk by taking this sick day? How much sick day is too much? Will people at work thing I'm just lazy and making things up? How much do I care about those people opinion?"
09:05
@Ælis exactly
Yup. This seems accurate:
muahaha, muuuuuahahaha, MUUUUahahahaha
x)
the world needs a pinkie finger laugh emoticon
@CaldeiraG I work for a rather large (~4000 employee) international company. This party invited everyone, most people are coming by plane, so I'm relatively close :P
There's hotels booked etc. But attendance is not mandatory. In fact you had to sign up, so you could be assigned a hotel room, but I 'forgot' to sign up.
09:20
woah that's a massive offfice party. I'm gonna have nightmares tonight
That's another reason I don't wanna go
Too many people!
I see, that's a big party :o
but 150km is like 1/3 of my country lol
Well, I'm not sure if everyone got invited, but definitely everyone in the country, and this is the main country for the company.
Portugal - 561 kilometers (349 miles) from north to south (realistically it's like 450/500km)
Still, it's going to be over 1000 people. Nope.
09:27
xD
It's on the east end of the country, and I live all the way in the west
In fact, I live all the way in a corner of the country. The other corner is 300 km away, so it's technically halfway across the country

1 hour later…
10:49
I just resolved a work problem, and now I'm ready for the day to be over. Too bad it's not even lunch time x)
time to start on a new project for 5 more minutes, right?
@kscherrer I mean, how could one code from scratch? My all coding life consist in mastering the art of copy-pasting :p
11:49
All my colleagues except one left for the party already. The last one is leaving in a bit, he is attending his sister's graduation from law school instead of the party. Guess I'm the only one working :P
@Belle Oh, being alone in the office sounds very nice! I hope you'll enjoy it!
It is nice! So quiet and peaceful! I can actually hear the A/C :O
I don't like hearing the A/C. I have noise cancelling headphones though, which block that sound, but not voices, so I'm going to be so relaxed today.
@Belle do you know of noise cancelling headphones that do work on voices? (not a rethorical question)
@kscherrer Maybe they exist, but they are probably not cheap. Active noise cancelling works best on low pitched and (semi-)constant sounds. Voices are neither of those. You'd want passive noise cancelling (basically earplugs).
yeah that's why I asked 😀 I have my own noice cancelling headphones at work since some months, I was really surprised how much they help
12:05
Yeah! I like them too. I sometimes turn them on with no music, just to enjoy the quiet.
@Belle doing that right now
Oh cat videos! I have a friend with 15 cats, who sometimes sends me videos of them. He rescued a bunch of pregnant cats a little while ago, so that's why he has so many. He got them all neutered and is basically acting as a foster home while the shelter rehomes them showly.
He just send me a video of 3 of them chilling in his closet :P
12:20
Do you know how much space Brexit will create in the EU tonight? Exactly 1 GB.
May 29 '19 at 14:39, by Tinkeringbell
@scohe001 No, no.. you're getting that wrong. Britain didn't lose the EU, the EU has freed up 1 GB of space :P
;)
@Belle tonight? oh sh**
Yes and no... basically the formality is tonight, but they still have a load of time to arrange all arrangements or something :P
so, is the decision now final? is GB really gonna do it?
Yes.
They don't have any other choice.
12:34
I thought it still stood up to debate 😬
good job, boris
/s
Aw, my joke is old :P
@kscherrer Freude schöner Götterfunken... but not you, England :P
I heard they were having a music battle (Ode to Joy for remainers, some other song for leavers... I wonder what happened to it.)
The deal has been accepted, they need to talk specifics though. We're relieved there is a deal. The prospect of a hard Brexit was scary for us.
12:37
true
@Tinkeringbell I don't understand
We had a bit of a party when we heard there was a deal (pizza and cider :D). We still are adamant remainers, but the relief of a deal rather than no deal was such a relief that we believed it warranted a small party.
@Tinkeringbell LOL
hahaha I love that 17 millions song
Just ask their favorite sex position first. After a few awkward seconds then ask about the smoking, the interviewee will be so relieved he will answer happily ^_^ — Laurent S. 2 mins ago

but from what I could understand in the song, it seems like it's an anti leaving?
why would the leavers choose this song
12:50
Wait. I need to look things up.
No, the Ode to Joy is for people that want to stay in the EU (so anti-leaving), and the 17 million people song (with the line 'And when the time came to speak, the British said fuck off') is picked by people that want to leave the EU.
One point worth considering is that "I'll check my schedule" implies that the event being proposed isn't very high up their priority list... so far down their priority list that they can't remember of all the other things they'd consider higher priority. If it was clashing with something REALLY high up their priority list, such as partner's birthday party they'd been planning for weeks, they'd be able to give a straight "no" pretty quickly... and if YOUR event was pretty high up their priority list (so they'd re-arrange their schedule to attend) they'd be able to give a "yes" pretty quickly. — Steve 6 secs ago

yeah, brexit is really tonight
kinda surprised by that
I knew they got a deal but I thought it would take like 2 weeks to go forward
@Tinkeringbell but the song has many many other lines that show how stupid leavng would be. Or are these lines just satirical? I guess I missed some key sentences
@kscherrer No clue, but that's what the game is :P
I do like the game
I lost, btw
12:58
Nooooo
Why would you do that Cash? :'(
@chumpbot wat
@chumpbot pewpew
@chumpbot you broke or am I doing it wrong?
@avazula i am so sorry x)
@chumpbot do you still offer cats
but also happy that somebody knows what I was talking about
Help! Chumpbot stopped offering cats! This is an emergency!
Sorry, I was too busy freaking out over lack of cat pictures to realize I also lost the game.
13:05
why has chumpbot asked a question 2 years ago? :D
5
Q: Is a move-in gift a good idea?

chumpbotOne of my coworkers is moving out of their parents' house this weekend to get an apartment of their own. I think it would be a nice gesture to get a small "move-in present." I'm on friendly terms with them, but I only started working here 4 months ago and see the coworker maybe four or five time...

Chumpbot appears to do some cooking too :P cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/84614/…

Q: Should I give more than 2 weeks notice if I'm out of office before my end date?

chumpbotBackground I work at a large international company as a software engineer. I'm part of a small specialized team of me and 3 electrical and systems engineers (I'm the software specialist of the team). In two weeks I'll be taking two weeks of approved PTO, and two weeks after I get back (6 weeks ...

Yes, chumbot, you should give us notice when you cant give us cat pics
One point worth considering is that "I'll check my schedule" implies that the event being proposed isn't very high up their priority list... so far down their priority list that they can't remember of all the other things they'd consider higher priority. 13:27
@chumpbot what about koalas?
@kscherrer @chump don't do koalas, but it can give you a dog :)

Are you looking into places like that, or did you just stumble across it? :)
The latter, I wasn't looking.
@Belle darn that seems lovely
I'm always wondering... I have a cousin living in an apartment complex for people who can't live on their own, and I had a coworker that did the same. They would always complain about their neighbours and how 'crazy' those people are/were. Don't you think you'd go crazy?
I used to live in housing for autistic students. It was bad, but that wasn't because of my neighbours, as most of them were lovely. The problem was the people who were supposed to offer care.
14:02
@Belle yeah, you mentioned that guardian who once thought it'd be a good idea to move everything elsewhere ...
@avazula Yes, exactly. I did go somewhat crazy there. I lost a lot of trust in healthcare providers. And so did my housemates. One turned into an alcoholic.
@Belle When you thing about it, being an alcoholic is kind of auto-medicating yourself (which really isn't great and you shouldn't do it. But it's understandable when you don't trust healthcare providers)
@Ælis using that argumentation, eating would also be self-medication
@Tinkeringbell Just a note, but I recently learned that "people with special needs" have a negative connotation and that handicap people prefer to be referred as "handicap people" (just like most autistic people don't really like to be referred as "people with autism")
14:11
I've heard americans use the term handi-capable
@Ælis Hmm.
Fixed :D
@kscherrer Yeah, this is owefull, don't use that.
Jan 24 at 9:25, by avazula
You might find this interesting ... it describes how refusing to use the word "disabled" for disabled people tends to make them being invisible and that one doesn't show respect to them when they call them people "with special needs" or "with impairment" ... It doesn't seem obvious so I thought it might be worth a share :)
:p
@Tinkeringbell I forgot you can edit ^^ Thanks :)
Yeah, I read that... I can understand it, but I've just never heard anyone refer to my cousin as 'disabled'...
14:14
People are afraid to use the d word :)
(including herself)
@Tinkeringbell I usually don't call myself "disabled" because I already know people will react (badly)
But yeah, some people on the autistic spectrum prefer the form "with autism". Most don't. Both is fine as long as it's the concerned people who get to choose (which is often not the case)
Eh, in this case, it doesn't matter much.

2 hours later…

@chumpbot TGIF cat please! :)
