Q: How to not be obsessed/anxious about friendships?

boribobI am a quite sensitive person who takes everything kinda seriously. Also, I tend to overthink about things especially about relationships. I’ve always been worrying if my friends like me or not or when they “seem” cold or angry I get really nervous. I get this when my friend doesn’t answer my te...

Morning people!
JAD
JAD
hola
Can't help it. Ban me again. I just confessed to transgressions from 42 years ago elsewhere. Since then i've tried to be good and have succeeded for more than 30 years.
I sit down with everyone from authors with Pulitzer Prizes to sidewalk sleepers with shopping carts.
The professors get editorial advice. The sidewalkers get lettuce (money), now that i have some again.
In person, everyone sees me as equal (and shy), because i've been there. Here, i get banned, because i'm truly awkward.
06:54
Morning o/
Morning, @CaldeiraG!
I'm not trying to get banned. It's just that this is the site that calls out almost as much as puzzling.stack...
Two days ago an equally shy person and i wound up singing together on the bus.
Quietly, but we both knew the songs.
One was "Killing Me Softly" and the other was "If You Don't Know Me by Now."
@humn This isn't the place to talk about you being ban
Also, please try to have a conversation with the other users instead of monologing
@Ælis , but i've been banned here, which is confusing. I saw a lull and tried to stir the waters.
Also, @Ælis, i can be very constructive, behind or in front of the scenes. Test me.
If you want to know why you have been ban, talk to the mod in private. This room just isn't the place for that
@mods, please inform me.
(I don't know the back door but will take it if allowed.)
Awkwardness, again, is my adopted middle name.
I've done so much to overcome it, i'd like to type with someone likewise.
07:10
Oookay. Then let's start with some simple chitchat.
Good morning!
;)
Thank you, @Tinkeringbell! Have you sat with homeless/penniless persons who have the most amazing verbal skills? Along with deteriorated physical capability?
I do on a daily basis and am not judged.
@humn Ehhh... nope. I knew a few people who were poorer than us way back when (and I think they're still not fully recovered but we lost touch after our music club disbanded).
But they weren't penniless or close to homelessness.
?!?!?!?!
But that's not really chitchat XD
What is?
07:13
Smalltalk is usually more like 'Good morning to you too! How's the weather over there'?
Don't tempt me to quote "I Don't Wanna Talk Smalltalk" from a musical.
And the weather here is swealtering.
@humn Hmm. I know quite a few musicals, but I don't know that one... Which one is that?
"Pillow Talk"
Sorry!.... "Pajama Game."
@humn Same here. Dressed for a different kind of office that's always cold, but am now working in a warm spot :/
They keep it cold to see your goosebumps. (Now that's smalltalk.)
And they keep my environs hot to see me sweat.
07:17
Perhaps ;) I'm going to go, standup. Brb!
Thank you for a kind word, @Tinkeringbell.
More power to you!
. . . speak? Lurkers? . . . you can't do any worse than i . . . bring up any topic . . . inside my shell i'm a know-it-all who can't think of a better place than here to bare it all . . .
. . . you don't even have to speak perfect English, though if you want to learn it . . .
. . . Puhun Suomi syntymästä lähtien (my natural language is Suomi/Finnish) . . .
. . . and I teach researchers from every corner to write technical English . . .
(My Mother, again, grew up in Los Angeles, CA, Rockwell City, IA, and Stanford, CA, and taught me more than i'll ever know.)
@avazula, you are a hound who pares the branches! Please let me roam.
(and nice visual, by the way)
@Mithrandir, you're really here?!?!?! I'd be glad to meet you at puzzling, er, Troll. Was just about to slink there anyway.
07:49
Oh, come on! The truly awkard stackexchange chat room is (Troll)[chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/39978]. Take a peek.

@CaldeiraG I don't know this music, but the tittle sounds a lot like me :p
:p
You have linkin park, Avenged Sevenfold and probably many more tracks with the same name :p
I'm not really surprised, this sounds like a good music tittle
10:48
@IPSCommentBot well that is a unexpected comment
11:23
@Mithrandir dogs exist, therefore they are better than people
@JAD yeah but non accessible to me in a portable format. Thus makes me less of a creep.
In a different manner, I can watch a movie in a browser, I cannot store it due to copyrights etc.
So funny fun fact, but no thanks.

Interesting discussion topic based on the recent meta about deleted comments. One of the things the OP mentioned is "This management over comments is a very different experience from many other communities on SE."
This got me thinking
Should IPS (by nature of being a SE site) provide the same user experience as the rest of the network, and if not how different is it reasonable for it to be?
12:55
@Rainbacon Normal, he is a regular user of SO and many technical websites so most posts address something relevant to the answer while on IPS it's a bit of "I agree/disagree", chatty comments, commenters addressing other commenters, etc
But comments are third-world citizens like Jeff Atwood says, I don't know why people get mad because their comment was deleted
it is Jeff, just checked :p
most comments*
@Rainbacon We try to fit within the system. But every site is different... You don't have to back up your code on SO or mathematics on Physics with personal experience either ;) I'm kinda sure that if we're going to be unreasonably different, SE will just pull the plut on this site or step in and tell us to be less different ;)
We are all equal but all different :p
So far though, I feel this site is sticking (out of necessity, perhaps) closer to what SE sites are meant to be: Comments for improvements, answers backed up... It's just difficult communicating that up front to newer users that are used to other sites.
@Tinkeringbell I agree on this :)
[needs backup] interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/22925/12962 or deleted since it's a link-only answer

@ElizB Morning o/
@CaldeiraG \o
just found out the first available appointment is 2 months away for getting my cochlear implants set up.
kinda frustrated because I have the implants that I will be using but can't use it for another two months
I'm also concerned about if the current ones break
13:54
First time I see this, GPDR is really going forward apparently :\
What site were you trying to access?
@CaldeiraG There's a load of overseas (mostly smaller) news sites that do that. It's cheaper for them than trying to hire a DPO
Yeah, lotta websites out there that don't want to deal with GDPR and so just block EU users. Which I think is scummy, but eh, what can ya do.
@Tinkeringbell I can see
@El'endiaStarman Basically
13:58
Personally, I'd go the route of "don't store information about users" rather than block a significant segment.
Project Euler did that, actually.
@El'endiaStarman Why a news website should store your IP, browser and personal info that identifies someone just to show more "personalized" ads
+ cookies but that is standard now
Honestly I just want to see the news on non-paywall websites as most here or more known websites already have it
Not that you shouldn't pay for it but i don't read all of the articles in just 1 website
which would mean more subscriptions
14:21
Interesting news of the day (aka it's not just SE that's facing ads backlash): github.com/standard/standard/issues/1381
14:41
@scohe001 That was an interesting read, to be sure. I found it particularly interesting that the author uses adblockers (and installs them on his family's computer) and yet, still seems surprised/disappointed that people hated ads in the terminal. Maybe they're willfully ignoring the fact that a major reason to use an adblocker is to supress the intrusive attention-grabbing behavior of ads?
Reminds me of this, in fact.

Q: Why do people not notice our enormous, prominent, clear and contrasting purple banner?

user2979044I'm part of a MediaWiki site called D&D Wiki. Among others, one of our longstanding issues in the public eye was our failure to label clearly enough that certain pages are categorised 'Homebrew', as opposed to 'Official'. Consequently, we pushed through a solution wherein all pages that are not ...

Answer: it looks like an ad and people instinctively don't look at ads.
Idk I mean for me the reason I use an adblocker is because of the skeevy/intrusive practices that are employed with ads. If I had a guarantee that every ad was just going to be an image and maybe some CSS, I'd be fine with it. And it sounds like that's what they're doing there. It's just a print statement with no strings attached
The attention-grabbing stuff is annoying and a bummer, but it's by no means my first concern. I'd be willing to accept it if it meant going back to a time when ads weren't so malicious and scary
I agree about the intrusion, but I don't really want ads in my terminal because they are going to get in the way and make it even harder to parse through the output in the event of an error.
15:17
@scohe001 100% agree on this, I also use adblock at home because of intrusion reasons
And if i'm opening a website to see something I don't want video ads automatically playing with sound and taking half of the screen to it
15:31
Yeah, ads with animation, video, or sound are a no go for me
While we're on the subject of ads, I really really like this "presentation": idlewords.com/talks/internet_with_a_human_face.htm

I saw that this question may be more suited to this stack than some of the others so I'll try it. -- I used to be a freelance website designer/developer ( first under a Business Name and then under My Name Freelance ), but moved away from it to concentrate on writing an online music magazine. I've enjoyed doing the music magazine, and fully intend on continuing to

@ExtrovertedMainMan I'm not really happy with my comment there. Felt a little too harsh :/
@scohe001 I have a feeling I've seen a very very similar question before. I'll dig around once I'm home. But don't worry about the comment.
16:09
@Tinkeringbell I believe this question as already been posted here at least twice by this "same" user (they are using the same language/words, but it might not be the same account)
16:22
@scohe001 Agreed, that was really good.
@Tinkeringbell yea it sounds extremely familiar. I'm pretty sure they went and posted about it on Meta.SE too
Let me see if I can find that
Here's what I was remembering
Looks like a different user though

Could be 2 accounts from the same person

There is no peace without . . . tickles

Makes sense
Kalashnikovs are terrible ticklers.
@Ælis Bet it's the same people that go "of course he's not crazy, he's just doing it for attention".
Tom Cruise in Rain Man.
When he was Ethan Hunt. In MI2.
@Rainbacon Meh, people develop impressions pretty quickly. I wouldn't read too much into it. Eeps is of course more restricted, but it's not like continental drift or something. Just what they happened to notice and they're comparing one case to zero.
Of course, mathematically, that's infinitely different.
@CaldeiraG . . . Never go to meta.ELU. Never.
@CaldeiraG I am moar equaler than you.
@M.A.R. You make no sense.
19:49
@scohe001 It's happened more than I care to admit. I open a question "alright, I'm feeling happy today. Let's spread some love." Halfway through the comment, I'm more like a devilish gargoyle choking on a hairball, and once I'm done, I'm like "Screw it, I'm going kitten hunting. Who's with me!"
@Mithrandir You make less sense than none.
Or maybe "fewer" sense, I dunno which Fowler would approve more of.
Or was it that other guy.
That is illogical. *pointed ears twitching*
Obviously, I'm in ELU chat mood right now
@M.A.R. ... that's quite the comparison D:
On the other hand, I can relate to gargoyles choking on hairballs.
@EmC Did I mention I also lose some seconds of sleep over it. Once the day is over, I'm lying on bed, suddenly thinking "Oh man, I sounded like your stereotypical white mustache eye-patched frowny thick-eyebrows general in that comment".
Followed by "oh well".
And "sigh"

Q: How to casually invite a distant colleague for an afterwork?

Arthur HavlicekI work with three colleagues in a small open space. We're developpers. We've been colleagues for almost a year and got to know each decently. I'm a shy, socially anxious person that don't have many friends. I would appreciate making new ones. I get along well with most people. So far, I maintain...

Then "what if this is what I am? A soulless online troll feasting on low quality questions and memes"
Then another "oh well"
@M.A.R. haha, that part I can relate to
hmm just ran into a problem that was asked about on SO a couple months ago, +7... and no answers :'(
maybe if I figure it out I can win fame and fortune some rep
Lol aren't those synonymous?
20:05
@scohe001 If you're getting 2003 results, the technology you're using is probably extremely outdated.
@scohe001 it probably won't be THAT much rep :P
@Mithrandir the COBOL devs at my company sit about 50ft from me. 2003 results would be too new /cries/
@Mithrandir Don't you know NASA operates on alien technology from 1960?
20:23
@M.A.R. Alien technology error messages probably won't be on the 'net, though.
Now, I need to sleep, I have to catch an early bus tomorrow. *yawns* night folks
'night!
