Q: Pursuing someone for friendship rather than dating

LucasMcGrawI want to form a friendship with another person of the opposite gender, who has also reached out to me on a number of occasions. I am not interested in dating. What are the dos and don'ts of building friendships for friendship's sake?

Q: Why was my relevant comment deleted?

RonJohnHow can I communicate my issues with a potential date's pushy behavior? It was not rude or abusive, and about how men need unambiguous signals from women.

@AJ yay!
@Rainbacon You seem to have made your mind already. If you go for another interview now, I believe you'll be upset should you have to do the interview with the person who cancelled without any warning. Your discomfort is likely to show through body language.
@Rain if your wife thinks you shouldn't dismiss another interview with this company, would it be possible to reassure her by showing her you have interviews with other companies upcoming?
that way she won't have to worry about you not finding a job that suits your needs and expectations better

Hi avazula Where are you? Is it night or day over there?
:51356165

@lllomh Hi there! I'm in space! (lol portal ref sorry, love the game). I'm in Europe, and it's a bit later than 8AM here! You?

6:19 AM
@avazula Asia here 14 o'clock.i first come this web. Do you often play?

@lllomh ooh, welcome then! Nah, it's been ages since I last played ;) I'm very interested in games but curiously, I'm not eager to play. I love watching speed runnings though.

@avazula I also like playing games. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V is my favorite. Do you play it? Team formation.
@avazula love watching speed runnings ? So you must play (Need for Speed).
These games are all good.

@lllomh GTA is fun :) but no, I don't play anything anymore. Last time I played was in April. Before that, it must've been ... 3 years, I think?
@lllomh haha
My spouse plays a lot, though. Right now they're on Minecraft. Sounds like fun :)

6:40 AM
@avazula I'm still learning English, and now my English is too bad. Now I'm talking to you with a machine to translate my language. Maybe my sentences are not smooth. lol (:
Thank you for communicating with you.

7:28 AM
@lllomh no worries! Stack Exchange is a great place to learn English. I improved a lot since I first got here :)

@avazula "We've had this new policy for more than a year and it has brought many good answers with citations, because restricting the usage of comments invited people to express their feelings in a answer instead." from here. I'm curious, do we have data for that? Or is it just something we observe with no data (like when someone posts a comment and then move it into an answer)

Sorry about the delay, I'm at work. I support other teams and therefore sometimes I have to be afk so I can help them :)

(also Hi :D )

Hi beautiful :D
how's the holiday going?

Nicely, even if I had to do a not so very nice hiking yesterday >< (the slope was too harsh which made me feel very badly and sick)

7:31 AM
You know me and my limited SEDE skills... I can't prove it with numbers (and I'm not sure somebody can). However, people who've been around before and after adopting the policy surely can testify the quality of answers has slightly but significantly improved

@avazula Seems like your job is going good. Is today as much a good day as yesterday?

@Ælis oh no :( I hope you're feeling better today?

@avazula Yeah, I don't see how we could prove that with data either. I was, however, surprised to hear that the quality of answers has improved thanks to this policy. It's nice to know :)

It's exhausting, but it's good. I love than I can help people with my job and that I get to do stuff I love

@avazula Yeah, but I'm a bit grumpy though. I don't mind it, but my family appreciate it a little bit less :p

7:36 AM
Yesterday wasn't such a good day though ;D Somebody horned me and I couldn't know why before I figured out that I took a one way street in the wrong direction. Fortunately there was no one except me and I could turn around quite easily. I also forgot my keys after switching purses and I got to spend 3 hours outside without anything to do ... Meh.
@Ælis haha! Time to spend some time alone :p
@Ælis well, before that people would answer without providing any backup and would use answers in comments. The new comment policy, alongside with the citations expectations, significantly improved answers (and drastically reduced the number of comments under posts)
I'm sad because I made a joke couple of hours ago and no one reacted to it yet :(

@avazula Doing things you love is always nice. Too bad it's exhausting tho :/ Also, spending three hours outside with nothing to do seems awful :O It probably would have driven me crazy to think of all the stuff I wanted to do and that I could because I was stuck outside my house
@avazula Oh, were is this joke? :(
@avazula Yep, the citations expectations and the enforcing of the backup policy definitively brought a lot of improvement

Somebody said in the conversation about the upcoming wedding of our friends this weekend ("Ils vont être beaux nos tourteaux" -> "our lover friends are going to be beautiful"). But instead of tourtereaux (which means "lovers" in French), he said "tourteaux" (which is the name of a cake and also a crab species). So I asked which one of them they were, the cake or the crab, and no one answered :p

@avazula Ahah xD (I didn't know that a "tourteaux" was also a cake, TIL :p )

@Ælis yeah, that wasn't nice. Weirdly I got it pretty well. Getting mad didn't seem useful at the time.

@avazula What did you end up doing then? Sleeping in your car or walking in your village maybe?

7:46 AM
@Ælis I went to another town to get dinner, then I called my grandma for half an hour. with the hour needed for the forth and back trip I still had an hour to kill in my car, scrolling on my phone :p

Here goes nothing lol
and o/ all :D

hey you!

heya :D how are you?

@avazula That sounds nice. Waiting seems always easier to do for me when I have something to eat :p (but it doesn't sound like you eat it right away but rather waited for your SO to eat with him?)
@CaldeiraG Hello there :)

@Ælis o/

7:56 AM
@Ælis nah, I ate right away. 3 hours in my car with nothing to do! Better stop at a restaurant and eat something haha
I didn't do much different things than what I usually do at home. It's just that I don't feel safe in my car or outside in general.

@avazula Yeah, I know that feeling :/ I might have tried to climb into my garden if I were you, just to feel safer (it might have been a stupid thing to do, but it would have kept myself busy at least ^^)

@Ælis it was raining outside ... and my garden is surrounded by spines and nettles on a radius of at least 10 meters ...
thank you neighbor! u_u

@avazula Rain is not nice when you are stuck outside :/ I hope the spines are at least giving you blackberries or raspberry now? (Also, you can do soup with fresh nettles, it's very good and you just need to take some gloves to pick them)

@Ælis nope! Plain useless spines :p
@Ælis yeah, I'd love to bake nettle bread or prepare a soup but they're too close to the road to be edible :/

8:12 AM
@avazula Oh, nettle bread seems very nice! Too bad those aren't edible :/

@Ælis it does taste great :D

Oh, I'm jealous that you already taste one! I would love to taste different things made of nettle too :)

@Ælis that was back when I was living in Northern France... it is common over there :)

@avazula Really? I had no idea! Now I want to visit there just for that! :p
(alright, time for me to go now, my dad is getting grumpy because we aren't "doing anything" ^^)

@Ælis I'll take you some day :) have a nice day!
take care

Well, i got 2 upvotes on my first answer \o/
and I have an holiday tomorrow XD

yay!
it's a good day :)

:p it is

@CaldeiraG \o/. bypassing vote anonymity, I did one :)
@CaldeiraG Our independence day, so ours too! India
@avazula So far, so good. Interview in the evening. :)

@ankiiiiiii yay! Fingers crossed :)

@ankiiiiiii here it is Assumption of Mary timeanddate.com/holidays/portugal/assumption
@ankiiiiiii thanks :p

9:50 AM
@avazula True! just revising some courses now,
@CaldeiraG ah! something new to know

A J
Lots of people have a holiday tomorrow. What's the occasion? We got Independence Day tomorrow.

10:09 AM
Chant at the Moon Day Special Interest Activities
Feast of the Assumption Religious
Indian Independence Day Government Civic, Cultural, Festivities, Hindu, Historical

@ankiiiiiii yap :p we got the Portugal Day (10 June), Restoration of the Independence (1 Dec) and Republic Implantation (5 Oct), not necessarily a independence day xd

@AJ three have been listed here already, rakhi wasn't, but now it is.

@ankiiiiiii nice :p

in The Screening Room, yesterday, by ankiiiiiii
@NogShine I'd be having rakhi wishes over call and rakhi tied to each others to/by my roommate and neighbours etc.
@CaldeiraG distributed events

10:25 AM
@ankiiiiiii Do you tie rakhi to your room mate?

@ankiiiiiii Yeah

Q: How to deal with pressure from stupid family members forcing you to do something stupid?

leeand00My wife and family “parents” came back to me after a long day (commute from home to office to site, learn new things, back to office back to home) at work and commanded me to talk with my neighbor, whom I really don’t know saying stupid cave man things like “be a man”. Which I really didn’t feel...

@NogShine lol not in that form, but just helping in tying the knot. Or if he can do it himself, no issues

@ankiiiiiii You tie to each other?

No, we tie ourselves, and help if required. My sister lives hundreds of kms away. Cant help it.
Also, were you notified again, for the @ in above inline quote?

No.
The quote came when I entered the room.

11:23 AM
@ankiiiiiii lol thanks for the website. TIL I was born on National Maple Syrup day :p

11:40 AM
@Ælis I promise I'll always be nice to you :p

@Rainbacon hahaha

11:57 AM
@Rainbacon what did you decide to do with the interview?

12:08 PM
@avazula Well, it's been more than a day since they cancelled on me and I haven't heard anything. So it doesn't much matter, but I definitely wouldn't take an interview with them if they hypothetically offered me one now

@Rainbacon :/ courage to you

@Tinkeringbell That's awesome

Thanks!

@CaldeiraG That's a nice answer you've written

12:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell Noice :p
@Rainbacon Well, thank you :D
Not even related because it's her sister, not the fiancé sister

@CaldeiraG It got triggered because it's on an inactive post (the reason is listed right next to the toxicity rating)

@Rainbacon Oh, what about the toxicity? It got 0.6/1
Guess there is no trigger for that

Yeah, that's pretty high. I think there is a trigger for it, but I'm not entirely sure. @scohe001 or @Mithrandir would know better

good :p

@CaldeiraG I deleted it
@Rainbacon I believe the threshold is higher (0.7 or 0.8?)

12:52 PM
Ah yes, I just found it in the bot code
toxicity >= 0.7

yay

1:20 PM
yay

what's up with chatty comments today?

Perhaps the heat of the question?

1:44 PM
@Rainbacon yup looks like you found it. You can also "huh?" a comment and it should let you know if it got reported for toxicity

1 hour later…
2:46 PM
Wow, @avazula was right. So many chatty comments today
I guess the good folks of the HNQ want to help me get the Marshal badge :)

@Rainbacon haha :)

Oof, I'm doing a Udemy course and the professor is Australian. I'm currently watching the videos on mute with captions because my headphones need to charge a bit. What or whoever made the captions really struggled with the professor's accent.

haha

Apparently "License Key" => "Lawson's Kaye"

oof

3:14 PM
That's actually hilarious

3:41 PM
It's really bad. I could mostly understand what she was saying, but only because I'm a decent way through the course and I had hear her talking about a lot of the things we were working with. But if I hadn't had that experience I'd have no idea that Sophia is actually a sphere

3:54 PM
Hello friendly people

@scohe001 I too find this hilarious. Largely because I'm not dealing with it. :P

"The volume of a Sophia increases wrt r^3"
"Are you calling me fat?"

@Rainbacon I believe that most of Udemy courses are auto translated (that'd explain a lot of things)

@avazula That's my guess

Idea: help writers write realistic accents by putting spoken samples through an auto-transcriber.

4:30 PM

Q: How to advise a friend trying to deal with a 'dead-beat' dad?

paulI live in Germany and have a friend who is being harassed by a man who is the father of her 2 year-old son. She is early 40s, he is about 50. The father lives in Macedonia and has provided no financial support either before or after the birth of their son. After initially indicating that he woul...

Hey @El'endiaStarman, I'm starting a new project next week at work using Python (specifically a backend project that uses django). If you had to pick one thing about python that people commonly get wrong, what would you say it is?

6:41 PM
WOOHOO PYTHON
*clears throat* Um, right, I will answer your question. (Also, it's neat that you're using Django because I also have experience with that.)

I'm not excited about the Django part

@Rainbacon That only way to create an array is appending to list and then converting it to array.
sorry to cut el'endia

@ankiiiiiii Uhhhh.....what? There's no distinction between arrays and lists in Python.
That's not an easy question to answer. I'll think on it.

@El'endiaStarman I cannot pass both to some functions interchangeably.
some NumPy functions.
Oh hi Mod!

@bruglesco Heya!

6:52 PM
1 min ago, by ankiiiiiii
Oh hi Mod!

@ankiiiiiii Oh yeah, numpy is special.
numpy != Python

@Rainbacon (1,2,3) is a tuple, which is immutable. [1,2,3] is an array, which is mutable. And {1,2,3} is a set, which is mutable.
That confused me when I was first starting out lol
Also iterators are interesting

7:08 PM
@ankiiiiiii Hey too!
(no one said hi to bruglesco... Where's all the well mannered people?)

7:19 PM
@Rainbacon Counter question: what language(s) are you used to? The experience going from JS -> Python is very different from Java -> Python.

I'm used to JS, C#, Haskell, and c++

oooh
Unlike the typed languages, Python lets you set variables to whatever. Unlike JS, Python doesn't let you do all manner of arithmetic operations between objects of different types.
Personally, I think that Python syntax and functionality tends to follow the principle of "does it make sense to do this?" and non-ambiguity.
Some decisions may be initially surprising, however.

7:38 PM
Which decisions might be surprising?

Easy example:
In [15]: "abc" * 5
Out[15]: 'abcabcabcabcabc'
Meanwhile, "abc" + 5 will raise an error.

I like the concept, but not the implementation

There you go. You might experience that often. TBD :)

JS has some quirks like that
For example:

"5" + "6" => "56"
"5" * "6" => 30

JS is basically entirely composed of quirks.

7:44 PM
but "5" * 6 = Nan

It's surprisingly hard to generate NaNs in Python, actually. You basically have to do float('nan').

Wait no
"5" * 6 is actually 30
But if you do "abc" * 6 you get NaN
The best explanation of JS destroyallsoftware.com/talks/wat

@Tinkeringbell No worries. Thanks for the hello!

@Rainbacon Haha yes! I love this one.
Anyway, @Rainbacon, treating Python as "saner Javascript" will probably get you pretty far.

Mostly, I'm just going to have to fight the urge to put a semicolon after everything

7:54 PM
@bruglesco Just teasing the room a little.. this is IPS after all XD

@Tinkeringbell That does add a little irony

@Rainbacon Funnily enough, JS doesn't require a semicolon after every statement (thanks to automatic semicolon insertion). It just bites people hard in a few edge cases and therefore, the recommendation is putting semicolons after everything.

Especially considering my initial salutation was to call everyone friendly (I still think this is one of the friendlier rooms on SE)

Like I said...Python is like saner JS... :P

@bruglesco Yep! Can happen though. Sometimes the room is quiet for hours, then there's people talking about JS ;)
I think the correct answer to that discussion was 'use jQuery' ;)

7:56 PM
That's true, unless you are in strict mode, but also being the saner version of JS doesn't actually guarantee any good results
I would say that being the saner version of JS is roughly on par with being the saner version of the Joker

@Tinkeringbell I haven't done JS in years, so I'll stay out of that conversation ;]

@bruglesco I envy you

@Rainbacon Oh, unfair! Bruglesco just said they wanted to stay out of the convo :P

@Rainbacon Don't! I'm a chef. I'd gladly accept a job working with JS if I could

Chef as in cooking?

8:00 PM
@Rainbacon If you put it that way....hmmm.

There's a programming language called chef

@Tinkeringbell yes

@bruglesco Nice! Sounds fun but hard work...

@Rainbacon indeed, but no rational person would use it for a reasonable codebase
@Tinkeringbell yeah I'm over it.
It isn't nearly as glamorous as television makes it out to be
and yes, it is hard.

@bruglesco Hmm? You don't get to curse every other word? :P
I've never really seen anything on TV that made it look glamorous. Just stressful and physical

8:07 PM
@Tinkeringbell there is that. Which is nice.

Hahaha oh it really is like that? I actually thought it was just Gordon Ramsay doing that ;)

oh no that's a thing

Oof. Sounds like more stress ;)

the targeted yelling is a bit unrealistic. (From what I heard even Ramsey isn't like that, it's just part of the TV personality) Most of the yelling is done at inanimate objects
Or in a nonconfrontational manner to simply be heard over all of the excess noise.
Kitchens are LOUD!

@bruglesco That's true! So what's the best insult slung at an inanimate object you ever heard?

8:11 PM
@Tinkeringbell But, if you watch Gordon Ramsey you would think everything is sophisticated and creative. No matter how creative the menu though, you will be making the same ten dishes over and over for at least 4-6 months. And then you usually only change one or two items

@bruglesco Yeah. My brother worked kitchens once, just as a side job... Lots of dishwashing but also just microwaving prepared stuff :P He quit within three months
He's still whining about it though

I don't blame him. dishwashers get treated pretty poorly

But only 10? Most restaurants here have more than that on their menus. That sounds even more boring

@Tinkeringbell but each individual usually works one station which is responsible for only a small portion of the dishes.

@bruglesco Oh. And you only get the same one each day?

8:15 PM
@Tinkeringbell I can't think of anything interesting at the moment. It's mostly just unintelligible expletives.
@Tinkeringbell depends on your training. But almost certainly yes.

@bruglesco ah. Don't worry :P I'll figure out my own cooking curses then! (I hate cooking)
@bruglesco Oof. Yeah. Are you looking at other jobs already?

@Tinkeringbell What, that's sooo cute :D

@CaldeiraG Thanks!

i just only got the time to see it because twitter was blocked at work lol
you're welcome :p

@Tinkeringbell NSFW strong language This one is one of my favorites.

8:18 PM
Hahaha. I would trade a Twitter block for my company's blocking of Spotify ;)
@bruglesco Hmm? Shouting that you hate cooking?

Well, open.spotify works on mine but because i still got the fb login, FB is blocked

@Tinkeringbell no. forgot to add link then i couldn't
gimme a moment
fixed
ohh NSFW!

@CaldeiraG :/ that sucks. I've resorted to putting my phone on the company guest wifi, then listening to it on my phone
@bruglesco Ooh. Raw chicken is baaad.

It is

@bruglesco Added the warning ;) now it should be safer

8:21 PM
thanks!

@bruglesco I once managed to blame half a bite of raw chicken for a seriously bad hangover XD

@Tinkeringbell Well, i got amazon prime so the Amazon Prime Music is included but it's only 2mil songs which sounds a lot but actually isn't
i can hear the classics lol

Having worked in food for twenty years, I have had a lot of hangovers blamed on me

I got spotify premium for the 3 months so that helps quite a bit

@bruglesco XD. In my defense, I didn't even know I had had alcohol, soooo...
And the chicken really was raw, it was a BBQ with a student cooking ;)

8:24 PM
wait, someone spiked your drink?
That's super effed up

@CaldeiraG Nice! I never really felt I needed Spotify or Netflix, but now that I have both, I don't think I can give them up easily either

and if a student is working the grill then someone trained should be supervising them.

@bruglesco Yeah. :/ Worst part: this was a girl. Mom and dad always warned me for boys so I never paid enough attention to my drinks that night. It also wasn't one drink, but more like 10 with increasing amounts of alcohol, apparently

@Tinkeringbell They're a bit expensive and Netflix doesn't have the content I like (except Originals, most of them are good)

@CaldeiraG I'm sharing both the Spotify and Netflix with family members. There's apparently family type subscriptions, I pay only 3,5 euros each month for each ;)

8:27 PM
That's awful. Sorry you went through that.

@bruglesco Ehh. This was very informal. No restaurants involved ;)

Well that's different

@bruglesco It's okay. I can smile about blaming the chicken, learned something about going out and watching my drinks, and I can say I had a hangover once ;) I also learned to be angry to someone's face ;)
And it showed who my real friends were ;)

Well that last lessen is very valuable
that too
Once? That's your only hangover?

@bruglesco Yep! I usually don't feel sorry about it, though I sometimes think of myself as a bit of a coward when I don't immediately want to drink around new people. But I think even that caution is also valuable, so I usually just tell myself not to be crazy ;)
@bruglesco Yeah. I do drink, but know my limits pretty well :)

8:31 PM
I find it hard to imagine not noticing alcohol. Then again, it's super bitter to me so I'd have no trouble identifying it. (Or at the very least go "hey, someone put something in my drink!".)

@Tinkeringbell We've had very different lives.

@El'endiaStarman Bacardi and cola... Very little Bacardi isn't very noticeable and considering I'm missing part of that night, I don't really find it that unbelievable that the last three or four were regular amounts of Bacardi. This was waaaay back when I was in University, and I had never drank any alcoholic mix things before so maybe now I would taste it because I know how it tastes... But back then, I don't think I would have
I don't often taste alcohol as bitter... If there's a lot I get the burning sensation in my throat though ;)
@bruglesco I'm not a party animal ;) most of my drinking is one or two in the weekend, just before sleep ;)

@Tinkeringbell I was a party animal.
Not any more though

@bruglesco Never really got the hang of it. I like going out with a friend or two, but usually we just have dinner and since almost always one ends up having to drive, we all stay sober ;) if not though, we can drink and giggle a lot :D

@Tinkeringbell What is friends? Family member are not likely to enjoy the services either
I know about those family accounts but putting together friends is hard lol

8:43 PM
@CaldeiraG Yeah, then you might've run out of luck :(

:(
I'll live with Spotify free and amazon prime lol

I just tuned back in and people are talking about parties! :o Hey everyone, come to my board game and Rock Band and Smash and VR party on September 7! ;-)

... maybe I should narrow my scope a little......

@TheTinyMan Sorry! I can't get a visa in time...
@CaldeiraG Good luck. YouTube has a lot too, and you can make playlists ;)

Well i can do that :p

9:11 PM
Super cool website: everynoise.com

9:45 PM
@El'endiaStarman i agree
wish you could lower the volume though

10:00 PM
@CaldeiraG Yeah, I did that immediately after the first click. :P

:p
