@alex.l And yeah.... well, I usually do so too. But whenever I start overthinking it I don‘t, as I am afraid I might be mistaken. And thats what I hate about the generalization of sexism. It forces me to overthink things. Not that I want to play down the problems of sexism.... But generalizing it makes things horrible for me.
@scohe001 Sure! I do play sometimes. But I really prefer watching Portal speedruns than playing, plus Mr Ava monopolizes the widescreen that is in the living room haha
@scohe001 Nah, I'm really afraid that this internet law saying that "think about something. There's a porn version of it" will prove me that I shouldn't have searched for it
@scohe001 Let me find it, it's a French startup that does the textures, the result is amazing. I would like to work for them so badly, it's a shame they're literally in the middle of the country.
@scohe001 Well, as I said, it's his hobbie. This and baseball, thrice a week.
@avazula Creed uses a French Startup for their textures? Really?? That's awesome! Dang that'd be the perfect blend of Software and Art for you too, huh
@avazula ooh does he watch or play? (also I didn't realize baseball was a thing outside of the US and Korea)
@avazula oh that's awesome! What position does he play? I grew up playing baseball from when I was 5 but had to quit at 15 when it messed up my knee :/
@avazula dang he's so serious about his games he even worked for a gaming company! That's a tough job to land, he must be talented
@avazula Oh yeaaaaa you told me this, I'm just terribad with names
@scohe001 Right? We were also very lucky that I was already coming in town to meet with a bunch of friends and took advantage of my trip for meeting Noon IRL!
How do I convince a girl who happens to be my batch-mate for group studying? She happens to be a complete stranger to me and I would like to group study with her because she is sincere. How do I convince her of my intention.(I am a boy).
I've been living at my current address for just under 3 months. I'm not renewing the lease for another year after this one is up, so my landlord has just started to take viewings for the property.
So far, we've had:
One individual viewing, booked for something like 14:00 on a Friday. We were g...
We are 4 close friends and all are well settled and prosper. I am initiating business proposals among us but the problem is none of them takes the conversation serioulsy. However they all says that they will start any business in near time but not paying attention to look for a business opportuni...
@Noon adding the right tags to questions is good... but can you please only do so when you actually encounter a question that needs it? You're flooding the front page with old posts this way, and with our lower levels of activity that's a bit bothersome.
(So please, don't go looking for questions just to add a tag :D)
@Tinkeringbell I just wanted to add the "request" tag or the "saying no" tag to every question that have a "request" in is body. Link here: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/…
@Noon Ehhh. That doesn't really seem necessary ;) 'request' seems a bit of meta-tag to me (something that doesn't speak for itself). See e.g. this one, it's tagged conflict-aversion which is a much better tag than 'request'. They want to request, yes, but while avoiding conflict.
@Tinkeringbell I must admit, I don't see how this is a meta tag. saying-no isn't a meta tag and, to me, request is kind of the opposite of "saying no" (in one case, you ask for something, in the other, you are saying no to this thing)
Yeah, I was a bit thrown off... it's probably request as in 'to request' or 'requesting', not as in 'a request'. I think it at least should read 'requesting' then ;) Just so it fits in a bit better with our other verbs (convincing, saying-no, making-friend etc.)
Anyway, small amounts of edits should be okay. Try to do five old posts or so a day, preferably spread over the day a little ;)
(That's a totally arbitrary number we just came up with :P)
Oh noooooooo, I was trapped! :P (but don't worry, I currently editing new questions and I won't stop!)
So, in order to impreve tagging, I want to add tag to this question. Since we don't have the "landlord" tag, I thing I should create it. But now, I also want to edit every other questions that might need it XD (there is 40 questions but I can't edit them since I'm only "allowed" to five a day :P )
Yes and no... I'd say we don't have to have a tag for every professional you can possibly interact with. From help: If the tag can’t work as the only tag on a question, it’s probably a meta-tag
I'd say just tagging something 'landlord' won't work ;)
(But I realize that just tagging something 'netherlands' is just as problematic. All of our tags are a bit off, right now, if you take that rule)
I think family, friends, co-workers... they might have a little bit of a benefit... there's definitely coaches for interacting with family or co-workers or spouses, people that have made it their job to help out with those interactions and the skills they involve.
> Tags are a means of connecting experts with questions they will be able to answer by sorting questions into specific, well-defined categories.
So yeah, the landlord may have a lot of power, but I'm perhaps thinking that for a site like this, it may be too specific of a category ;) Just like our driving and cars (IIRC)
You might expect 'cars' to work on a site about vehicles, but for a site on Interpersonal Skills it's kind of a weird category
@Tinkeringbell driving and cars have there is only 7 questions. For "landlord", there is potentialy already 40 of them. So, I'm not sure that is realy too specific
well, take your time, ideally try to make your edits fix everything you can in one go
and try to make sure you're making substantially useful edits (not just like a couple commas, or rephrasing a sentence that was already grammatical), especially when you're bumping an old post (this isn't directed at anything in particular as I haven't been able to look at all the posts you've edited today)
"I merged your code, then committed and merged my own version because I was done with discussing it" O.o ... Guess who learned how to never have to do her own rework today?
I've been through 3 other senior devs and a few managers today. We're not done yet, there'll be a meeting tomorrow.
He seriously wants to do the magik equivalent of public static final ErrorList<String> ERRORS = ErrorList.of("error1", "error2");
And then never use the constant in the class itself, just have it their for an unrelated script to pick it up and spew it into some wiki page html... :/
What he meant was: Add an 'else' after your outer 'if' statement, to return and break from the method if needed.
@EmC Yep. But I've decided that this is bad enough that it requires professional help. He's a subcontractor (he's his own boss), and he's making a mess of stuff. I've seen other stuff that I found iffy, but this is bad enough for me to draw a line and make sure people get feedback on how he is and how he works and how he's not making maintainable code.
Especially because he's now apparently telling people that 'I'm new, and slower than he expected' (we already had a talk today). I can live with the new, not with the 'slower than expected' because my velocity is the same as his every sprint.
So I have at least one other senior dev backing me already (I mailed him yesterday to ask about it), and my manager will drop by the office tomorrow to talk with managers at the client side...
I have a few review comments that don't make sense lined up, and a few interesting chat conversations to share.
I'm tired from today, but I also feel a bit like a big bad spy :P
almost sounds like he's trying to make sure he keeps his work.. I know there were a couple problems at my last job where someone purposely created trouble for new employees and checked in bad code, so they'd be guaranteed a contract later, because "they're the only ones who know the system"
@EmC Well, they should at least work out a promise that I can definitely switch teams in January again. Because I already have permission from my manager to switch to a complete other project/client/team if not ;)
It's so annoying... He thinks that because he's been programming for 25 years, he knows so much better. But he isn't used to Agile working and hey do I have news, clean code standards have changed too in 25 years!
Context
I work in IT services companies and I've seen several colleagues and/or friends of mine that are in power positions (project leader, tech expert...) take on too many responsabilities, with the consequence of severely impacting their private life because they work a lot of extra hours (un...
