Q: Can somebody give me some advice on this long distance relationship?

Anonymous UserI am in a long distance relationship, it is happy and there is a lot of love there, I am very grateful for that, I do have a small problem and am looking for any advice on what to do. Her and I have been together for 6 months officially (one year unofficial but exclusive) and have never gone mo...

Q: How can I get someone's attention who is listening to music without being rude?

teslajinAt work a few weeks ago, a coworker was listening to music with her earphones in, and I needed to ask her a question because a piece of code I was writing was not working and she often helps me debug things. I pulled her earphones out of her ear and she looked at me really angrily for doing that,...

I understand the point of it, what I'm curious about is how you bring up the "proof" without seeming defensive or arrogant? Personally I have no idea how I'd interject that into the conversation naturally, which is why I asked if you had an example. — Em C 1 min ago

Okay, this is going nowhere constructive.
We're not going to have that discussion this way and in here.
beat me to it!
There are reasonable things to discuss on those topics but ranting back and forth isn't exactly a discussion.
@Cascabel Took me long enough...
Let's drop it for now; it's not a discussion to have with folks too worked up. (and that includes dropping the meta "talking about how we can't talk about it" conversation)

I gotta run in just a minute, unfortunately, have a good morning/day y'all.
@Cascabel You too, nice <whatever timezone you're in> :)

Please ensure this chat is maintained as a constructive place for discussion about the site itself and with fellow members. Complaints about behaviour should be actioned constructively on Interpersonal Meta. This chat shouldn't be a space for rants, hatchet-grinding, nor directly disparaging other members of the community (non-diamonds or diamonds alike). There's been several kicks, trashings, deletions and I've had to issue a couple of suspensions over the past day and that's unfortunate.
Please maintain the space as friendly and welcoming and be respectful to your fellow members and their efforts.

(That might not always be the case, and isn't the case for all chats, but right now I gather we're trying to do Not That here after a lot of That)

Could not agree more with everything said. But here's an improvement suggestion: apologize for the past approaches. She might still be bugged out by them (I would be). — Cashbee 10 secs ago

Q: How to introduce yourself to a friend of a friend?

user18337The other day I went to an event which I'd agreed to go to with a friend of mine. She came with her Mum, who I knew, and one other person, who I'd never met before. Since there were no introductions extended to me, I didn't know what to do and basically ignored this other person, as I'm rather in...

@sphennings was there a ninja edit that I'm not aware of, or do you think the last sentence is not enough? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/15052/…
@Cashbee I don't think that sentence is enough.
Ideally I'd like to see an edit that provide some explanation for why this will work. Not just "do this, you'll get this response"
14:46
@sphennings I see how it is a little scarce, but at least they do have some amount of explanation to their approach. Your rather harsh comment could scare that user off
@Cashbee Can you suggest a better way of wording my comment?
@sphennings give me a minute ;)
@Cashbee Sure thing. I've found that this formulation is relatively successful in getting newer users to edit their posts, but I'm always open to suggestions to improve it.
People that say that sneezing is impolite are not to be listened to. It's an important function of your body. Suppressing it is unhealthy and can lead to internal injuries and it is so much more annoying to hear five suppressed sneezes than two real ones. Farting and burping are different due to smelly gasses. — Steffen Winkler 12 secs ago

@sphennings oh in that case i will not argue against successful experience. Then i will just say that maybe putting a question mark in the end, and saying "could" instead of "can" could make a difference
also IIRC you're native english, while I'm not 😉
14:54
@Cashbee I know plenty of non native speakers who have a better grasp of the language than the average native.
@sphennings that's true but you don't strike me as the average native
@Cashbee Thanks. :)

I have to say, I agree with @DmitryGrigoryev somewhat. This answer is about the legal and procedural aspects of maternity in the workplace. It doesn't focus on the best way to finesse the situation with the Boss. While good advice, If the OP wanted Legal or HR advice there are other sites for that. What is the polite way to inform said Boss and keep them "on-side" (no assumptions about illegal and inappropriate response?) I suspect the pregnancy is not as secret as the OP thinks and early disclosure is best, purely from an IPS perspective but, that is not what you say. — Jodrell 58 secs ago

Q: How to model argument as less subjective

hooray, it magically fixed itself! I'm considering that my reward for the frustrating meeting I just sat through :P
@EmC That bad huh?
user15026
@EmC Glad it sorted itself out :)
@Tinkeringbell "due to recent security incidents.." sigh
@EmC Ah, nice. Security. I'm going to work for a new client, which means I'll have to have a new laptop because the one my company provides won't allow me to access their environment and vice-versa
18:24
my favorite part was that we aren't supposed to install software that's not on their approved list. but we also can't actually look at the list ourselves, we have to call IT to check if it's on the list. >:(
Which means I have to start up a laptop I don't use every 3 months for updates and password changes, otherwise I'll get angry e-mails that my security isn't up to date and I'll be a security risk...
user15026
@EmC That's rather frustrating and time consuming :/
@Tinkeringbell ugh, similar stuff here, it sucks
@EmC Ah. Our company at least made the list public, sad thing is most of it isn't the best software for the job from time to time
yeah, with ours they have to approve version-by-version, so you're stuck using old versions until they add the new one to the list
18:27
@EmC Ugh! Yours is definitely worse :P
You win this round ;)
haha :P mostly I've gotten my workstation to a livable state
the guy who presented was talking in very general terms and then people started asking real questions like "so what about hardware drivers? or plugins" and you could tell he wasn't really prepared for us, lol
@EmC Oooh... that reminds me of some talks I was given :P Also, I can imagine his pain :)
@Tinkeringbell haha :) I just stayed quiet, no need to draw attention to my "creative setup" as the manager put it :P
My manager actively encouraged me to install a different OS on my laptop from the one installed on it by IT.
As long as I don't come running to IT when I break something IT official policy is that they don't care.
nice :)
user15026
18:40
We don't really have formal IT at my work, we're too small for that
You have my sympathies. I quite like being able to check out new software packages as needed.
user15026
Sometimes that's frustrating, sometimes that's a blessing
the local IT guys here are nice, fortunately. one of my coworkers has to work with them a lot, so we're all friendly :)
My partner has a policy of making sure to drop off some cookies with the IT department whenever they've baked some. It's always good to keep IT and payroll happy.
aw, that's nice. those are two groups of people you don't want to get on the bad side of :P
18:48
@sphennings Could IPS moderators be added to that list too? :)
@Tinkeringbell They're not on IPS so they have less of an incentive to bake cookies for you. I don't know how cookies hold up to international shipping.
@sphennings Pretty well, if packed right :) I received some for a secret santa last year :)
I have a feeling they'd tell me to bake my own damn cookies if I asked them. :p
Which is reminding me that it's been years since I've baked anything.
user15026
19:05
@sphennings You should fix this, cookies are tasty :D
@Ash I must admit, I can't remember the last time I made them either :P
I guess that'll be a summer holiday project too :D
@Ash They are. I tend to prefer savory over sweat though. If I was going to bake something some American style biscuits would be my first choice.
user15026
the last thing I made was brownies I think
user15026
@sphennings This reminds me I have the stuff for cheddar garlic biscuits :D
@Ash Those sound yummy.
19:08
@Ash Wait... cheese and garlic cookies?
I guess the only thing they sell here is sweet cookies :P
@Tinkeringbell "Biscuits" in the US (Canada?) are more like scones.
Goes to google scones
^^^ Biscuits.
@Catija That looks very unfamiliar
Reminds me a bit of Soesjes, but this seems solid? No cream filling?
They're savory. delicious.
19:10
@Catija Guess scones are added to the holiday list as well
I need more holiday :P
Those look like more of a pastry base?
Well, "scones" can be either sweet or savory. Biscuits are pretty much always savory.
@Tinkeringbell They're solid all the way through. Savory scone is the closest translation into British English.
I really eat to much 'boring' food :P
Depends, I guess. I love biscuits but they're pretty "boring". Especially in the South where they're practically a staple and are sold in pop tubes to bake at home.
Sid
Sid
do you mean biscuits as cookies?
19:18
:sigh: Nope! Biscuits in the US aren't cookies.
Sid
Sid
One of US or UK calls cookies as biscuits(or the other way round). I never know which one
@Catija ... O.o ... Then, what does an (American English) scone look like?
The US calls biscuits the first image I posted above... Cookies are the flat things that are sweet and delicious.
@Mithrandir24601 Same as British ones... It's just easier to describe a biscuit as a "scone" when people may have heard what a scone is.
@Mithrandir24601 An American scone is normally denser than a biscuit. Our scones are often cut into triangles while our biscuits are either rounds or blobs in the case of "drop biscuits".
@Catija I wonder, what do you eat them with
19:22
A Dutch biscuitje:
Or are they literally just salty muffins?
Do they ... contain anything spicy?
@Tinkeringbell That's not a Dutch biscuit! That's a rich tea biscuit - a staple part of the English diet!
@sphennings ::is confused::
@Mithrandir24601 American scones may also be sweet while our biscuits aren't.
@Magisch Butter/jam. Slice them in half, slather them with butter, devour... alternately, cut them in half, top with things like sausage and gravy, eat open-faced with a fork.... alternately, cut them in half, put things inside like sausage and egg and eat like a sandwich.
@Mithrandir24601 Well, that's what's known in The Netherlands as a biscuit, and is a symbol of stingyness :P
19:23
It's also an ingredient of a no-bake chocolate cake, which is the only form in which I eat them
So like some sort of bun?
@Catija That's just a way of making mini hamburgers :P
@Magisch Muffins are more cakelike.
19:24
Looks all delicious
and I can't eat any of it :P
@Magisch They're very bready... the ones I make are like... three ingredients... flour, leavening, cream, salt.
@Catija That looks similar to what I know as a muffin
@Magisch Why not?
lactose intolerant & some sort of allergic reaction to most types of meat
Where allergic reaction == violent stomach cramps
@Catija That's another thing I don't get: what's leavening?
19:25
I really want to give all of you the same biscuit recipe since it's so simple and hear your opinions after cooking it.
I can eat dairy with some tablets but it's still not ideal
@Mithrandir24601 That's what we'd call an "English muffin". :P But they're different. They are griddled to cook them (on a stove) and have a different sort of leavener that causes the bubbles to form... these are baked in the oven.
@Magisch Weren't you also not eating carbs? :P
@Tinkeringbell Yes
well, few carbs
My diet is weird and complicated
@Mithrandir24601 Baking powder/baking soda/yeast... the first two are "chemical leaveners" yeast is a mechanical one.
19:26
and often times entirely fueled by what's reduced at the grocer that day
Raising powder? I guess?
@Mithrandir24601 Leavening is anything that will add co2 to a dough to make it rise.
so like baking soda?
@Magisch Yes.
@Magisch are you ignoring me?
:P
19:27
raising powder = baking soda?
my english isn't so good
@Magisch Yeah, I don't know... I pulled that word out of my brain somewhere and I think it's an old term for... something. begoodorganics.com/products/raising-powder
I've never heard it called rising power before but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the term in another dialect.
@Catija I'm happy with that :)
@Catija Ahh, so it's not the name of a specific ingredient... Makes more sense now
RAISE YOUR BISCUITS ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ
Raise them!
Yes! It's a classification of ingredient.
19:30
Wait
you specifically mentioned baking powder
and I skimmed the entry only
If I ask someone "how is it leavened", I expect to hear whether it uses yeast or baking soda or baking powder or eggs... etc.
I never heard the phrase leavening before
I think a lot of people don't know it... I just happen to bake a lot.
It's an uncommon term outside of technical discussions of baking and certain religious foods.
19:35
We learned about things like unleavened bread in school before - we'd just normally use 'leavening' as an adjective and not a noun :P
Because of the peculiarities of English leavening is anything used to leaven.
Air is a form of leavening. :P
(usually in the form of whipped egg whites)
19:50
(unrelated I guess)
@Magisch ... long time no see. You probably don't know be, but I know you.
Sandcat?
Yeah sand cat
Why the sand cat?
It's cute :)
@Magisch why no smiley face anymore?
19:52
in my opinion, anyone can use a sand cat
If we're posting unrelated things:
My Triceratops so far. Guess I'm almost done until I have time to pick up some safety eyes
That looks like a multiseasonal bulbasaur

@Tinkeringbell 0_0 thats what you were crocheting?
@Magisch Hahaha LOL :D That's a nice description. The official term for it is 'scrap yarn' or 'stash buster' I believe :P
@FreezePhoenix That's what I'm working on now. I'm always working on something, I hope to have this finished at the end of this weekend.
@Magisch hows RLemon doing?

Might take me a few weeks, instead of crocheting :P

This question seems to invite low quality answers. I've had to tell people that we need answers saying more than "Do this" 4 different times today.
@sphennings looks like two of them only just joined IPS today and the other two only started posting today. Probably not much we can do with one-off users like that
@scohe001 I know. I'm just frustrated is all.
I've now had this splinter stuck in there for 31 hours. None of the usual methods are working :(
@sphennings ahh I feel your pain. At least they’re getting cleaned up pretty well. I’d pitch in with a delete vote if I could :)
21:06
Hi everyone! :-)
@scohe001 I'd much rather see an edit rather than need them to be cleaned up.
The thing is that they all provided an good enough answer they just needed to provide some supporting arguments.
21:53
@Mithrandir needle?
havent been around in awhile, hi yall
changing comment button to 'suggest an improvement' is awweeesooomme
hearing about it, it doesnt sound like a big change (i think it was being discussed last time I was hanging out here) but i experienced it in action and it caused me to re-evaluate what I was about to write each time I moved my mouse over it
I've accidentally submitted a bunch of comments as answers because I saw a text field where my autopilot-brain thought "comment" behavior should be, and it didn't see a "comment" button. xD
haha, i guess thats a potential side effect of the change
22:01
It's still probably a more effective design, since it's being designed for people who are newer to the site and don't have the muscle-memory that I do
its amazing the way our brains subconciously interact with UI elements, especially one's we are used to
