Q: How to approach Co-Worker who seems to avoid talking to me?

SomeoneElseSo, I recently started working and so i'm new to the workplace. I came in around the same time as the girl who sits opposite me (she has about 3 months on me). That being said, my first two weeks in, i had lunch (in a group of 4-5 people) and talked with her a few times after work on the way to ...

Q: Breakup etiquette/ interactions with Ex.

GeardaddyI had a break-up a number of years ago in which I feel that I was treated badly. There are a number of reasons why, but my main gripe is this. It was a serious relationship: it lasted a bit over four years, exclusively for all but a few months, and we had had many discussions of our future togeth...

03:50
You hear from her every couple years? I'm baffled. Hard to imagine breaking up with someone, being unable to face them and then going out of my way to make punctuated appearances in that person's life when I couldn't be bothered to have a final rship chat years earlier. I'm unsure if she is a) rude; b) oblivious; or c) Didn't feel as heavily connected to the relationship all along and therefore honestly doesn't think it was a big deal and thinks you shouldn't either. But I just don't understand why she shows up every couple years. I'd permanently end all communication. But that's just me. — Kathy Smith 1 min ago

Your question is a bit unclear: You need to be part of the chat to get information about school events? The chat also contains personal conversations? People in the chat want to exclude you, claiming your attitude is the problem? What exactly is your question: Do you want to know if you are at fault? Do you want to know how to not seem "boring/annoying"? Do you want to still get Information in a environment where you feel bullied? — TheSexyMenhir 2 mins ago

@Mithrandir Hmmm.. I think I'll look up a related facebook group that allows pattern requests.. :/
Or shake up the Literature.SE meta ;)
@Tinkeringbell how much info do you have on the book? I don't know if it would be allowed on A&C, resource requests are off topic but identification q's are ok
we even had one question on "what brand of paint is this in my photo" crafts.stackexchange.com/questions/2649/… .. which consensus seems to be would have been ok, if the picture wasn't so bad :P
I know it was a book on tatting, that it's format was something like lessons, going from simple things to more complicated things... that it included patters for things to try, and that the thing I made was a little cute hat. I also remember that that hat was probably in the book as a basket, with the recommendation that you could leave off the handle to make the little hat.

It was mostly black and white, with I believe some color pictures and a pretty old-fashioned font...
I feel like pattern requests are off-topic on A&C though ;) And I'm only looking for the book because I want the pattern?
ah, yeah I think they are
tatting is neat!
@EmC Surprised you know that :) Not many people know what I'm talking about when I mention it, or think I'm talking about tattoos :P
Do you tat as well? Have you made anything really big?
@Tinkeringbell I only recently learned about it, haven't tried it :)
14:26
@EmC Do it! It's fun and it makes some really pretty stuff..
I think it was a random youtube recommendation after I watched some videos on spinning
I usually tat little shoes to attach to baby-congratulations cards ;)
@Tinkeringbell sure :D right after I clear out my ravelry queue haha
@EmC So do you spin? :P
aww, that sounds very cute
14:27
@EmC what queue are you talking about? :P
I think I'll be focusing on cro-tat (crochet with tatting combined) when I've finished the current WIP :)
@Tinkeringbell I've tried hand spinning some, I'm not very good but it's fun
@EmC I still need to try that one ;) It would be cool to make my own yarn
@Tinkeringbell do you know lion brand homespun yarn? I took that apart and used it as roving to practice haha
the tricky part I think is keeping everything consistent so using that helped to focus just on the spinning technique
hmm let me see if I can find the rav link
@EmC I've seen that brand on some international groups before... I know it by name, there's no stores nearby that stock it though ;)
@Tinkeringbell ah, maybe it's a US thing. I keep getting gifted it but it kind of sucks.. it's basically just roving with a couple strings wrapped around it
14:35
@EmC That sounds like it's not a nice yarn to work with, except if you're making bulky stuff?
We have some cheap brands here too, they're mostly acrylic and itchy, they split easily and are a pain in the ass when you have to undo your stitches :/
I always go for the more expensive cotton... My skin doesn't tolerate wool or acrylic yarn very well anyways..
@Tinkeringbell yeah, exactly

As it stands, I've been letting her make small comments without knowing how to respond, as I didn't want to start fights or ignore her request to "not know", but I'm tired of that double standard. — Jess K. 1 min ago

A: Responding to my mom's remarks about my love life when she refuses to accept/acknowledge it

AaronThe Answer It's actually fairly simple - that is, not complicated; it might not be easy to bring yourself to hold up to it though. You just keep pointing out that you are not allowed to talk about that. Mom: You should... (or "Why don't you..." or "You need..." or whatever) You: I do...

@IPSCommentBot heh, perhaps this should be upgraded to not trigger for OP's comment on their own question
I do agree with your edit, @apaul
@EmC I'm not referring to this case, but I've seen enough cases where OP's wrote delete-worthy comments
Just flagged a bunch today already
@AnneDaunted I thought it was a major improvement, but it's still a weak answer.
With the question being popular enough, everything gets upvotes
@AnneDaunted True.

It's not like there was a shortage of sites on the Internet where everyone can post their personal opinion on everything they want

Q: How do I recognize false praises?

SidBackground: I am part of a club in my university which deals primarily in public speaking, debating, etc. It's been close to 6 months since I joined and to be fair, I haven't done quite well in debating tournaments. Since, it is Asian Parliamentary Debate, much of the results depend on your teamm...

is this answerable?
I hope he posts a meta question if/when he decides to roll back the edit. Seems like a case that could be used for reference later on.
@apaul If he does roll back the edit, but doesn't post a meta question, you could post one yourself
@AnneDaunted Ish. The answer is you can't/it's entirely situational.
@AnneDaunted Probably will, but I don't have the best track record on this site's meta.
@AnneDaunted Looks fairly opinion based, at least the first question.
@sphennings Maybe the OP is hoping for subtle cues (e. g. body language) to tell truth from lie
Paul Ekman (born February 15, 1934) is an American psychologist and professor emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco who is a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions. He has created an "atlas of emotions" with more than ten thousand facial expressions, and has gained a reputation as "the best human lie detector in the world". He was ranked 59th out of the 100 most cited psychologists of the twentieth century. Ekman conducted seminal research on the specific biological correlations of specific emotions, demonstrating the universality and discreteness...

Q: How do I express affection and appreciation for a dear friend with low self esteem?

William GrobmanA very dear friend of mine has low self esteem, particularly relating to social desirability and men, and becomes very sad when I've expressed my deep appreciation for her. Compliments just make her feel that it couldn't possibly be true and she's even cried when I've told her that I love her and...

The question will need some buzzwords like non verbal communication then ;)

Q: Why do men rise when a woman leaves the room?

SidI once read that in Canada, it is considered polite for men to rise when a woman leaves a room and men normally offer their hands to women. My question is, what is the origin of this tradition?

...I should probably kill that one
does the edit invalidate Kate's answer?
@AnneDaunted Maybe, but we do allow the editing of 'bad' questions to get them reopened I think?
I think this needs a 'the question has been updated, please review your answer'?
@Tinkeringbell But the question is pretty old. i wonder if it's not better to start all over again
@AJ the false praises one... main man with his interruptions!
15:46
@Tinkeringbell And what would the update look like - deleted by owner?
@AnneDaunted Feel free to leave a comment ;)
@AnneDaunted Are we talking about the same question? the man rising ?
@Tinkeringbell Yes
"My question is, what is the origin of this tradition?"
formerly "My question is, why is this tradition considered to be polite and what is its origin?"
@AnneDaunted I'd leave a comment saying 'heads up, the question has been edited and part of the original question was removed (why it was considered polite. You might want to review your answer to see if it still stands, to avoid receiving downvotes'
Then again, it hasn't been reopened yet
and it won't get my vote
@AnneDaunted then you could comment why :)
that way, people can take it into consideration when seeing it in the queue

@ExtrovertedMainMan too many questions in one post? I want to answer, but..
@EmC yeah
and im going to make a meta on disclaimers...
@Tinkeringbell sigh, hits VTC :P
@EmC It could use a comment pointing that out too... I'm on itr
@Tinkeringbell working on it ;)
