@NVZ No. I think we're just getting a lot of questions that are quickly and highly upvoted, same with their answers. It might be a sign that we're not being quite critical enough, but the questions which make the list are generally decent enough.

I'm excited - we'll be hearing about our mods soon :D
@curiousdannii yep I 'm voting for encouragement as well as content - may not be the best - but I want people to keep contributing

Q: How to tell a friend to stop being a attention seeker & rude

Nfagie YansanehI have a friend, Let's call him Jack and the problem Is have is that ever since he has started watching some YouTubers, he has now wanted to act like them. If I was to walk down in street he will sometimes yell out stupid words to be "cool" and maybe do stupid actions as well, trying to get atte...

A: How to tell friends something goes against my religion?

SQB My religion prohibits me from being profane, how can I tell my friends to stop swearing so that I am not influenced by their actions? You don't. You can't expect other people to follow your religion. If you phrase your request like that, it will likely feel to them like you're asking them to...

This is getting ridiculous.
Since this is now a highly visible question of our new stack, should we subject it (the question, the answers, the comments) to greater scrutiny?

Q: "how to ... without beeing rude?" Should this kind of question get a custom close reason?

dheinA big part of questions I looked into already since the site started was in a breakdown just "how to say/ask ... in a friendly way/without being rude". The answer can be break down to "Simply do it, but in a friendly way". All the answers are giving a lot of additional information that are some...

Q: What are appropriate non-binary alternatives to sir/ma'am?

RobbGA non-binary friend of mine recently posted on Facebook about getting agitated about being addressed as ma'am while on a train. This got me thinking about what possible non-binary/gender-neutral alternatives there are out there. I'm specifically talking about respectfully referring to people who'...

Q: How to ask a friend/roommate to do/to stop doing smth? And how not to feel bad asking?

Sergey GulbinThere are different situations where I would like to ask a friend or a roommate to do smth or to stop doing smth. So, for example, I have a roommate that sometimes don't wash his dishes and I don't like it. How to ask him politely to wash the dishes without being preachy and without offending him...

@SQB It's difficult since it receives so much attention. Honestly, if I had the option to disable HNQ, I would, at least until we get moderators

Q: How can I easily improve my reading of faces and eyes?

PaulI spent a lot of time reading when I was young, and also had very poor vision which I assume means I didn't see faces well. I believe I could benefit greatly from improving my ability to read people's faces and expressions. A friend of mine has a condition and is working with a therapist, but I...

@Zizouz212 What I mean is, maybe we should go over the posts (q, a & c) and edit or flag them.
Tidy them all up a bit.

I would say flag them - if we can get them closed (if they should be), then they're off the HNQ straight away
But providing extra scrutiny isn't... well... right. Everything should be subject to the same level

SQB
Comments can only be deleted by mods, right?

Edit? Yeah. Flag? Bit of a long shot. I'm sure if the question is HNQ, people are more inclined to not doing anything, even if it's lower quality
Yep. Only by mods.
What I'm actually curious though, is how much of our traffic is being driven by HNQ right now. It's very difficult to tell

Lots. But only a mod can tell.

I'm not complaining about the HNQ, though — I'm one vote away from the first golden answer badge :)

I've been flagging obsolete comments and long comment chains. DVing answers that aren't descriptive enough, commenting on questions that need clarification... but a mod hammer for questions that need details would be nice.
I think we need a custom close reason for "needs detail" with the text that explains to say where you are, specific example, links to meta... etc.

I've deleted my "white man's burden" comment on your question; you probably want to delete your response.
@Catija this one, I mean.
@Catija perhaps you could move some of your comments into your question?

I've been surprised by the DVs on that question.

SQB
That would clean that comment thread up a bit.
I wish I was surprised by the DVs and the "there's no problem there" comments.

Yeah. I'll do something when I get back to a desktop. I'm mobile right now.

Q: How do I show interest in what someone is saying in a one on one interaction?

Joe SSometimes I am listening to a friend and they say something along the lines of "It doesnt seem like you are interested in this" or "It seems like I am annoying you" when I feel that I am genuinely engaged in the conversation. It seems that I am not providing the social cues that they are used to...

Q: Looking for help regarding feelings of worthlessness and suicide

WorthlessSo I had to create an alt account for this one since it is of a really sensitive nature. This is closely related to this question: How to respond to a friend with little to no self confidence and often doesn't feel good about themselves, though not quite the same. This is going to be quite long...

7:20 PM
@Catija There is a close reason for that. Unclear what you're asking

@GypsySpellweaver That close reason does nothing to explain what we expect from them, so until SE makes it possible for moderators to edit the default close reason text to allow linking to help pages or meta questions, we are better served making a custom close reason.
You can see an example of this in use on ELL:

@Catija Comments, with a link to meta, can do wonders. =)

> This question should include more details than have been provided here. Please edit to add the research you have done in your efforts to answer the question, or provide more context. See: Details, Please.
That requires people write comments and know about the links. If they are in the clsoe reason by default, it makes it easy for everyone.

When the time comes that we can create custom close reasons, the most obvious choices will be the ones that have historically been used the most by comments. Using the generic with a comment now can improve the chance that it will become one of the custom reasons later.
TBH, I have no idea how long we'll have to wait until we can do custom reasons anyway. Need mods for sure, not sure what else is required by SE to enable that option.

Until we have moderators, that's our only option.
@GypsySpellweaver Nothing. Every site gets three blanks for it by default. When the site formulates such a close reason and votes it up on Meta, the moderators can set it easily.

7:27 PM
That's good. Guess it's time to build your case for that one by using it. =)
I think it'll be a prime candidate anyway. Details is just too important for good answers in this area.

Q: How to deal with social anxiety that gets worse with practice?

@YvetteColomb Hola!

Evening!

Will someone ask "how should I greet people in a chat room where there are users from around the world who may not be in the same time zone as I am?" :P

@Mithrandir24601 good (time-zone) to y'all
@Catija Felicitations and salutations my good people.

@Catija 'Rytsas'

@Mithrandir24601 Huh?

11:00 PM
Namaste
:bows:

Although 'rytsas tolvys' is also good - 'rytsas' is a High Valyrian greeting that I think means something along the lines of wishing people good health. 'tolvys' means everyone
Also, 'rytsas abrun' would work for a chat room - a bit like saying 'hello collective of people'
I'll have stack exchange talking in Valyrian yet! :P (I'm the one who's answered all the 3(?) questions on the Valyrian language on Sci-Fi SE... Don't know what that says about me, but there we go...)

@Mithrandir24601 Have you started a chat room on Science Fiction & Fantasy to use Valyrian in?

@Catija hi :D

@GypsySpellweaver ... There is a 'constructed languages' proposal on Area 51, although I'm tempted, now you mention it... I don't really have the time though :/

Pitty. I'm sure they could use the support.

11:15 PM
@Catija lolol
Good morning/day/afternoon/evening sir/madam/person

@Mithrandir24601 Only up to 53% commitment.

I haven't actually committed yet - probably should, but I know I won't have the time. Was actually hoping that the quantum computing proposal would miraculously take off, but sadly not :/

I've had enough trouble learning French - let alone the constructed languages

Q: Fidgeting in a polite way

heatherOkay, this sounds really stupid, but let me explain. There have been multiple times in class where I will be fidgeting in one way or another - clicking my pen, spinning the pencil on my desk, tapping my foot, etc - and I don't even notice. It really does help me focus to do something along these...

Q: Let's start working on our help center "what to ask" text!

CatijaWithin the next couple of weeks we are likely to have moderators who can edit the various parts of the site, including our "On Topic" page and our three custom "off topic" close reasons. In our time here so far, we've started to make some headway in defining this site. This "On Topic" page is a...

@heather Rytsas! So would I, considering my PhD's going to be to do with that. I'm trying to think of good questions, but for some reason, can't

same.

although the followers have doubled in the past couple of months, so there's some hope yet

11:36 PM
did you see the open science proposal was closed?
a new one's already started up, but it's going to take a bit to get it back to where it was.

Was it? I noticed that it was there, but that was about it - there's probably not much to ask about it though
Although perhaps the first thing to do for the quantum computing one is to fix the proposal description
(as one of the comments says)

i just added two new questions, but i don't have any more votes.

and I've just added a comment on the changing proposal description question :P
Hmm... I've upvoted one - I personally think that the other should be more along the lines of '... improve the probability of photon pair creation ...'
Although it would depend on exactly what you say when asking the full details of the question

11:52 PM
hmm, maybe.
the character limit is...well...limiting =P
