Well, teachers hold a fairly high position in society. That's partly because society is more
communalistic versus
individualistic - which is more common in places like the US. Due to social conditions, and just the way society is, education is viewed a lot more like a privilege, as opposed to some sort of right (again more common in the US). So to disrespect a teacher would be to abuse a privilege, and to disrespect someone with authority makes it worse. Many universities have policies that reflect that (e.g. be on time or don't come, minimum attendance). —
