Q: What to do when 'establishment' science or researchers misrepresent your idea and call you a crackpot?

CorrectCrackpotSo I've had this computer architecture idea for a while. I've made some other posts about this on academia and may make one on EE stackexchange, and I hope I don't come off as bitter. The thing is, I feel that some of the people I talk to about this misrepresent my idea, and insist on their misun...

Afternoon!
@Mithical Is it true that you need a driving license for bicycle there?

huh? no
not that i've ever heard

A J
For electric one?

Oh, for an electric bike you need some sort of license I believe

When I hear "bicycle", I don't think "electric". :)

8:37 AM
@AJ Eh, they're often really easy
At least here
Driving is really easy on paper

They should do that here too. Especially elderly people on e-bikes are dangerous!

A J
@Tinkeringbell Did you have an incident with them?

@AJ Not yet :P But they're riding their bikes like tourists in Amsterdam... they don't look out very well (looking over your shoulder is harder if your old)...

@AJ an old guy on an ebike crashed into me a couple weeks ago

A J
@Tinkeringbell ohh
@Mithical That's bad. Were you hurt?

8:55 AM
not really, but it did break a spoke on my bike

Q: How to interact with narcissistic(?) people positively while not encouraging their behavior

BanalBadgerI have been wondering how to approach people with an unrealistic sense of self-importance in a positive manner (both for those who are not receptive to feedback about it, and those who are more open minded with feedback). I know the former will come up plenty in my professional career, but I imag...

It's a vicious cycle: People don't cycle because the streets are dangerous, so they drive more (sometimes being unqualified to do so), so the streets are more dangerous, rinse and repeat
@ExtrovertedMainMan 1. Don't assume they're narcissistic
I mean, if you're gonna approach them like that Bill Cosby gif, you can't expect the conversation to go that smoothly

9:26 AM
@M.A.R. So I would like to be able to hold them accountable for what they say, if they make misleading or wrong arguments against me, without triggering an angry conflict (caused by either me or them or both of us) or a stone wall of denial; and if you or others could see a way that I can be more conciliatory - without having to bow and scrape beneath the feet of the Legitimate Academics(TM), that would be nice. You know, some humility on their part as well as mine, right? — CorrectCrackpot 9 mins ago

And that's how trolls play ;)

Although, we usually dip them in either melted cheese or marinara sauce

Well, I'm not really seeing the humility from your side in that last comment, if you do react to people that way they're not likely to be willing to listen to you. Is that exasperation usually there in your responses to people in real life, how much do you let these thoughts shine through when interacting? I think it would be best if you started editing your question, make it clear this is about real life and not SE, and instead of including the details about your ideas (which seem rather irrelevant), add more details on how you interact with people you're trying to get to listen to you. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 11 secs ago

Ya know, what was that gimmick about humans not understanding large numbers and very small percentages?
Probably 1000 of 100000000 crackpots throughout the history have proven their idea can change the world and did.
That's both.

Seems to me (but I have no proof yet) they aren't actually having a conversation but are instead just shouting into a void.

If someone comes to me to tell me the earth is flat, I have two options: Say 'you're wrong' and stick with that, which won't open a conversation, or ask them why they think the way they do, and at least learn more about how flat earthers think.
A conversation requires listening and reacting to what you're told, otherwise it's not a conversation.

@Tinkeringbell I have encountered too many people that feel they're owed something extra because 'they're the hero'. But of course we're all our own story's hero. This fellow seems to expect that "they should listen to me, no matter what, if we're having a balanced, neutral, and scientific discussion"
It's when idealism departs from reality. People optimize for not hearing BS, so no, you can't expect that if your idea is too far-fetched
It's not "fair" or "unfair", it just is. There's no other version of reality.
I was neutral until I saw the phrase "bow and scrape beneath the feet of the Legitimate Academics(TM)"
So you don't wanna do any hard work and flesh out your idea to see if it stands the test of consistency and incoherence. What do you expect, then? You already seem convinced it's a great idea, so why are you discussing it with anyone else?

Q: How could my friend interact with her mom when what she told him differ from how she acts?

nonopolaritySo my friend talked about this situation: What his mother told him, it should be when somebody gives him a gift, he could say: Wow, it is something that I have always wanted! Wow, it is something that I really like! I have been hoping to get this! So one day, my friend knowing that his mom's fa...
