It certainly seems one of the best detours to all the philosophical headache to develop a mantra of "be the best person you can be". (Haven't read the Medium thing BTW, I can't access it)

@avazula So, she's a bit more religious than I am, as you can read about here. I had gone to her church a couple of times and did not like it. I told her that I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to go to church with her, and we had, I wouldn't call it a fight, but I thought she was going to decide it couldn't work and break up with me

And WTF. Pastebin didn't use to be censored?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hey, you don't know what I did with that mantra, maybe I screwed everything up ;)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ No, I mean that I've seen several people experience a nearly identical faith crisis to Ava's

@Rainbacon oh :( good to know you've found a solution now!

5:02 PM
@Rainbacon I realize that my gut-feeling-y observation is impossible to prove or disprove (hah, faith-based).

@avazula I'm not entirely sure we have though. It's not a topic we talk about frequently

:/ hopefully you can talk about it peacefully when the will comes up

@avazula It's certainly the most practical. Different faiths do/should answer more questions than "how to live", but you're setting aside those because they'd cause inertia.
Like, for most purposes, I wouldn't need to know or deduce logically whether angels exist or not.
I don't need to sit around and find out first before donating to charity

@avazula I'M NOT THANKING YOU!!! go back listening to the blue music

@Ælis "I have a girlfriend and she is so bluuue "

5:09 PM
@avazula DABBA DEE DABBA DA

@avazula The extreme groups you mentioned, hardcore atheists and hardcore Catholics/Christians, frustrate me too. Those kinds of atheists choose to overlook the copious amounts of love that many Christians express (that isn't fear-motivated) and those kinds of Christians lose sight that Christianity is not supposed to be about following the right rules, but following the right Person. It frustrates me that both groups contribute to division (and harassment) in our societies.

Yep. The crux of the problem. Gives @El'endiaStarman a bounty
Dawkins vs. Crocoduck. As if there is no middle ground.

@El'endiaStarman that's where the cultural differences come and play: that are not extremes branches over here. It's the "regular" ones.

Personally, I don't have a high opinion of Catholicism in general but hey, it helped you deal with serious loss and hard times, and you've become a better, kinder person for it. That's wonderful.

Both sides love making strawmen of the other side, and sometimes strawmen of strawmen.
Meta.strawman.stackexchange.com.

5:12 PM
@avazula I mean, I could sorta say that too with regards to American branches. They're both just far from moderate (in different directions).

But the lot of people who identify as religious (having a religion as opposed to the modern more fanatic meaning) or agnostic have done acts of lasting kindness. The best of humanity.

Of course

Of course of course.
I'm thinking you've maybe said all of this in your Medium post.

I'm not generalizing. I'm saying that I've had what I consider to be too many bad experiences with some people from within, who are supposed to lead by example.

Agrees with the duplicate close vote

5:14 PM
Haha

5:40 PM
@Ælis Since I'm blue, does the music I listen to count as blue music?

@Mithrandir Are you also blue inside? Otherwise, your music might not be blue :p

My music is... a very, very, very eclectic mix.

@Mithrandir Then maybe it's a rainbow and you are yourself a rainbow :D

The playlist I've been working on assembling in Spotify is currently at 15 and a half hours long, and I've been working on it for less than a week...

That seems impressive! (but I don't listen to music very often, so I can't really see how impressive it is)

@Ælis it probably has that 10-hour fan sound
Right now the garbage truck is magnificently ruining Beethoven's for Elise outside
One of the best pieces in the world, and they're using it to signify the truck is here so make sure your trash is out.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ XD
@Mithrandir I really like Thomas Bergerson's music too (the music I tend to appreciate the most tend to be from movies and TV shows)

WOOOO Thomas Bergersen!
Oooh, some good ones from Peter Hollens at the top too.

I feel like Nick gets glossed over

I know and like a surprising number of these artists. Huh.

@Mithrandir For your consideration (because you had Star Sky in there): Globus - The Promise, Globus - Mighty Rivers Run, and Christopher Tin - Sogno di Volaire.

I'll check 'em out in a few minutes ;)

Q: How to tell if self doubt is justified

tuskiomiWe all have an internal compass to tell us what is right and what is wrong, what we can do and what we should do. There are some times, however, when the compass goes all out of whack, and tells you that you shouldn't do something that you would really like to do. You can come up with reasons, f...

:) I have those three in my Fantastic Epic Songs YouTube playlist (as well as a cover of Star Sky that I like a bit more than the original).

Of TSFH's versions, the Orchestral one is the best IMO

6:06 PM
Hmm, I realize I'm not as odd as I thought in music
Everyone here seems to prefer vocal music and vocal only

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ What do you mean by "vocal music"?

I know it's not that clearly defined

Maybe? I'm not on there so I don't know what's within scope. Maybe Psychology? I'm not in that network either so I also don't know what's within scope. IMO this is a good question, but probably fits better elsewhere. I'm just not sure where. — Lux Claridge 11 secs ago

@El'endiaStarman But take that to mean the voice is considered way more than the music

@scohe001 I need help here. stackoverflow.com/questions/56761455/…

What am I helping with?

@scohe001 The piano.

1.If you know about the topic, then directly.
2. what to improve to convince them or them to convince me that this is not duplicate or the otherwise.
3. Moving to chat

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you can type DEAD BEEF in piano notes. I can do that :D
@ankiiiiiii it's been...8? years since I messed with Python sockets, so I won't be too much help here. As far as moving to chat, you'll have to have a mod to do that
Or just open up a chatroom and link them...

@ankiiiiiii If there's too many comments, a link will automatically appear with a description "would you like to go to chat" or something like that. Not before though.

6:25 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it was there, I went to sleep and it disappeared.

@ankiiiiiii Just edit your question and say "this is not a duplicate because <rational reason>" Doubt you'll convince tripleee though. He's usually really careful, and rarely does anything without strong reason or evidence.
@ankiiiiiii It should appear when you click "add comment"

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I am witnessing that since this afternoon.

Witnessing tripleee?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ their meticulousness

Oh wait, Barmar dupehammered it

6:28 PM
YES!
Thats what the close review people told me.
That he is some kind of Thor and we are not touching what he closed.

> P.S. My name is barmar, not barman.
Hehe
@ankiiiiiii He is. Gold tag badges are awarded when people have posted 200 answers and have a cumulative score of 1000 in a badge.
That means they're very, VERY knowledgeable about that tag.

Ha I saw the tag info tho

You mean the tooltip?

@ankiiiiiii the most help I can give you is to tell you that right now you have no reopen votes on the question. I wouldn't bet on having it be reopened as it stands.

Still, you can edit your question and it'll get in the reopen queue.
So you'd need to make that edit count.

6:32 PM
This^

Make it complex then?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ looks like it's already been edited after the close tho :/

add Charles proxy results
or netstat output

@ankiiiiiii Don't make it complex. How does making it harder to read make it more likely to be reopened? The guy is saying the other question answers yours, you need to edit to explain why it doesn't.
@scohe001 We're chatting for 20 minutes and Anki hasn't said why it's not a duplicate yet

it doesn't work, for one 😅.
the output in the terminal is different and are in two different stages of a server setup, for two

6:34 PM
Which makes me think you have a problem with the closure itself @Anki, not the why
@ankiiiiiii Then edit and include that in your question!
That was some rising intonation. I haven't had those since.
Hmm.

that's why I added emoji to soften it
I failed :(

I didn't mean you, I meant me
I mean, anyway, that's what I've been waiting for you to say. You need to edit the question

I guess I delete and ask another one
or reference it to the new one
it would a complete rephrasing

That's okay if it's different enough that doesn't look like a repost.

ok thenks :)

6:41 PM
You're welceme :)

@scohe001 I didn't want to add to the already long comment chain on the most recent question, but I don't think it's actually a "what should I do" question. The OP isn't asking us to make a decision, rather they are asking how to make a decision

@Rainbacon I tried to explain that us making or even aiding with the making of a decision is a "What should I do?" in my opinion. Both cases are lacking clearly defined goal (though maybe if this one focused on a specific situation, we could help. But as it stands, it's broad in addition to "What should I do?")

"How should I what should I do?"

Is it really lacking a goal though? I feel like "I want to make a decision" is a valid goal. It's still off-topic because it is not interpersonal, but I would argue that it does have a goal.

The newest question seems pretty unclear to me.
It'd need a lot of editing to be clear enough for a meaningful answer.
For starters, how do we know this self-reporting of the OP is of real phenomena? This self-doubt thing sounds like it does happen to people but this subtle stuff is hard to deal with because of self-biases.

6:54 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Part of answering here is that we are supposed to respect the premise of the OP. If they say "this is what happened" we have to assume that they are correct in that

@Rainbacon fair enough. Let me better define "What should I do?" then. It is a question lacking a clearly defined goal where answers can be objectively ranked depending on how well they solve it. "I want to make a decision" could have any number of answers with any number of decisions, where no answer is "better" than any other.

So it can range from anything like "The OP's understating the issue and they might need professional help" to "The OP's imagining things then applying some experimenter bias for sauce"

There's a better definition saying what I'm trying to say somewhere on meta, but I can't seem to find it atm

@scohe001 Keep that in mind for the meta I am writing

@Rainbacon I'm saying the premise is unclear
It's not answerable without a concrete example.

7:27 PM
@Rainbacon I'll be on the lookout for it :)

Ooh, I only have 1 vote left today. Better make sure I use it well

7:40 PM
I'm downvoting this answer mainly because of the last paragraph : it seems your understanding of this disease is pretty basic (psychology 101), too basic to provide for an issue this complex. I do agree with your advice to talk to a professional to get useful tips. — MlleMei 32 secs ago

@IPSCommentBot It's a complex complex
Oh it's that anorexia question
@IPSCommentBot fp IMO

Is the SE network being unreasonably slow for anyone else?
Ahh just got "offline for maintenance." No wonder

8:05 PM
@scohe001 yea, I got the same

Seems to be fine for me

Main site looks fine, but Meta's still down
(for me at least)
Wait jk, things are working
You're magic, @Rainbacon

@scohe001 true

You know, I once worked on a team where the other developers would often ask me to come look over their shoulder because doing so would magically make their code work

8:10 PM
Ahh and I missed a great "Yer a wizard" opportunity :(
@Rainbacon LOL you're the guy with the magic touch

At one point, yes I was

@Rainbacon are you a debugging rubber duck?

No, I'm a real duck. I know this because I really like bread.

Do you float?

Now I picture a purple duck who loves pizza and I've never been more confused

8:17 PM
Well I'm certainly not made of wood

I'm made of metal
o/

@avazula I'm just imagining the human incarnation of Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Black Sabbath and Tool :p

@scohe001 oh i dont now Tool

Ahh my brother's super into them. He ended up going to one of their concerts where Baby Metal opened. That was the day he became a Baby Metal fan lol

8:33 PM
If you had to imagine a metal-me you'd be closer with Iron Maiden indeed, Ghost, System of a Down, lamb of god, Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom

Ooh System of a Down is 👌
I haven't head Dimmu Borgir, though

Dang it, I didn't get the job I would have liked BUT one of the interviewers (a longtime family friend) reccomended me for another position that they have open in the same workplace soooooo hopefully I get that
I have to do interview and all that

Good luck! And sorry to hear about the one you didn't get

@scohe001 I think they're from Norway
@ElizB fingers crossed!

8:48 PM
Kinda bummed I didn't get the job, but I have hope and it's good to know my friend Karen who recommended me is in my corner, she definitely wants to see me employed but the reason why they didnt hire me was that someone else had more experience and they needed that
Which i totally understand. the position had been empty for 4 months and they needed someone to "hit the ground running"

Q: My wife has now decided she doesn't want have children, but I fear it's just because of mental illness (depression)

KidACrimson37 y/o male. Wife (33 y/o) and I have been married for about 7 years. We fell in love deeply and quickly and were married within 2 years of when we started dating. We never really discussed having kids vs. not having kids until after we were married, but the understanding was kind of always that ...

11:41 PM
This sounds like you and your wife need medical help, not internet suggestions. There's a lot of therapy options that can be looked into. It's not likely that anyone here will have anything useful enough for your situation that'll "turn things around" for you. — computercarguy 1 min ago
