Q: How to communicate with people who are very sensitive?

HaptometerA few months ago I moved into a shared house. I really like it here, but as per previous questions there's been some conflicts regarding the rules and expectations of other roommates. I worked really hard and we are now on good terms and I can tell talking to them people are happy. I want to keep...

Q: What to do if you are an autistic atheist in a religious country

SmootQWhat should you do in such a situation ? You have Asperger's Syndrome and lack social skills. You are a 30 years old virgin. You are an atheist in a Muslim country No friends, no relationships, no social life. You want to get married, and girls reject you when you tell them the truth about you....

Am dancing in my kitchen as I prep stuff for dinner later and singing to the Greatest Showman soundtrack and I blame this room lol

@Ash kitchen dancing is probably one of the greater things in life :) any place where food is involved gets me going xD

user15026
Heck yes. I am making Guam fiesta plate food today, and it makes me feel like dancing because it is bright and happy, so I put on bright and happy music to match.

4:31 PM
@Ash ooo yummy! Wish you could share with your SE family haha. I love cooking; especially when dancing or with other people :D

user15026
Yeah, it is too bad I can't just send food through the internet :P I don't get a lot of chances to cook but I am definitely taking advantage of today to do it. (I am stuck at home today anyhow, I have to test my cat's blood glucose levels every couple hours to see how well he is responding to his insulin therapy).

Hey all

@Ash I'm walking a tightrope...

user15026
@Mithrandir That song is one I come back to a lot - it makes me think about my husband and our long distance stuff a lot.

@Ash Oh no! I hope your cat acclimates to the therapy well :) Do you just do self-expressive dancing while in the kitchen? Or do you break out some organized stuff? I find myself mainly being self-expressive. It's easier to whisk :P

user15026
4:37 PM
@Anilla It's mostly just moving however feels fun for wherever the song is going :)

@dhein I'm sorry optimization buddy... I broke our code and am starting to use VueJS... ahhh!
@Ash Aha, that makes sense :) Do you ever do organized dancing?

user15026
@Anilla Not really, I'm not really coordinated enough to want to do that, I guess. But I just like moving to my music when I've got a good jam

@Ash That's fair! As long as you enjoy it, that's great :D

user15026
I make my own fun

Is there anyway to flag an answer as needing updated? People placed their answers in despite knowing the question was about to be closed and need to revise it since the "on-topic-izing" edits I made :)

4:55 PM
@Ash it seems like almost nobody knows it though... it's not one of "the" Greatest Showman songs

user15026
@Mithrandir Yeah, I've noticed that too, but it's one of the most important songs to me from the whole thing. It just...resonated with me.

user15026
I mean so did "This is Me" for a lot of reasons, but "Tightrope" is one of the first songs in a looooong time where I was like "this is a love song I can actually identify with"

5:12 PM
@Anilla Just left the a comment and, if the answer is no longer answering the question, flag as NAA

5:33 PM
@Ash Incidentally, Lexi Walker did a great cover of the song
(sorry for disjointed chat; popping in and out)

6:11 PM
@bruglesco No-one say Hi back yet? Bunch of manners in here :P Welcome!

@Tinkeringbell Thanks. How are you?

@bruglesco I'm fine, thanks. And you?

I'm well.

Well, welcome to the Awkward Silence. It really lives up to its name, especially during the weekend ;)

Most of SE is a ghost town on the weekend. Its something Ive come to terms with in my experience here.
But it makes ingratiating myself into the community a little bit more difficult.

6:19 PM
Hmmm? You don't have much time to post/chat during the week?

Not really. I work in food service. I occasionally log on on my phone. Like on lunch. But I don't otherwise have access/time.
I also log on late nights but that is usually the same as the weekends.

user15026
@Mithrandir I will have to look for that!

Hmm. That's a bit strange... Over here it has it's quiet spots, but I always got the impression there's also bits of the network that are always active.

Yes, there are.
But if one is interested in a particular community. Finding activity in others isn't really rewarding.

That's true. Well, always feel free to just drop a 'hello' in here, or a 'good morning'. We could use more chatters at quiet times, and sometimes all it takes is for other people to see someone is here :)

6:36 PM
@bruglesco waves

@Mithrandir Hi to you too

6:53 PM
I am here to wave the pom poms.

1 hour later…
7:56 PM
@bruglesco Hello :D Glad to see a new chatter! I'm rather new here too and have quickly discovered the weekend blues xD

8:13 PM
@Ash Good :D me and others influenced you
@Anilla heya i'm popping my head in here before my meeting with classmates
doing a group presentation. :P

8:32 PM
@ElizB Hey! How's it going??
And what's the presentation about? Lol

@Anilla it's about american health reforms
My portion is to just do the intro, 19th century, 1900s to 1950s

@Anilla Thanks.
@ElizB Good Luck
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I appreciate it.

@ElizB ooo that's neat. Feel good about presenting? Lol

@bruglesco Thanks :)

@bruglesco Appreciate havin' ya here :D

8:34 PM
@Anilla I have no problem presenting
it's just that I don't appreciate my group mates being late. -_- Meeting was supposed to be at 3 but it's 35 after 3 :/

@ElizB What are you doing here then?! This room is for people with no social skills! Out!

@ElizB That's good. Many people find it difficult

like come on seriously I'm tired and miserable I wanna nap

@ElizB Ahh, the classic group situation :) I've enticed my fellow members with food before. It works quite well xD

8:36 PM
@Mithrandir I've just presented too many times to be scared of it anymore
@Anilla meh. can't really bring a meal to a library

@ElizB Library, huh? I see. Do you like your group outside of their tardiness?

@bruglesco In certain situations where I'm unprepared or don't know the material as well I don't like presenting
@Anilla They're just classmates. Not really friends outside of that
they're in more of a neutral classmate zone thing
I neither like or dislike them

@ElizB I usually 'rate' my group members based on their performance. I like it when they're active participants and making good contributions... otherwise :P

@Anilla based on their performance so far... nope, don't like them. I made a google doc and they've added nothing so far for their parts
either they've done their own thing but I don't know what they did

@ElizB Oof, there we have it then lol. Usually get better groups?

8:42 PM
@Anilla yeah, this time it was assigned randomly
can't do much about that

@ElizB Yea, kind of a roll of the dice sometimes. Do you expect to receive good marks for it?

@Anilla I hope to. Gonna just do my best
right now i'm just sleepy and tired and thinking I couldve taken a long nap then come here because it is now 45 minutes past 3 and nobody's here. :/ Shitty time judgement.
Sorry, I need to stop complaining

Q: Sit opposite or along-side on a 4-seater table on a date?

SavageSpeaking broadly across Western culture, on a typical romantic first-time date, is it more common to sit across from the person or to sit at the 3/9-o'clock position on a 4-seater table, and what would be the motivation for that decision?

@ElizB A good vent isn't bad :) Are they even gonna show up?

@Anilla they said they'd be here "soon"
whatever the heck that means

8:48 PM
@ElizB Oh my... I've gotten a soon that's been hours. Best of luck to you fam... I really hope it doesn't turn out to be in vane

@Anilla Vain. Yeah, i hope so

If you're in a position where you can listen to music, Pentatonix's Sound of Silence is sounding pretty awesome. Might improve your mood a bit.

@Mithrandir I heard it before, and right now I'm contemplating leaving in a few minutes and saying that I came for an hour and waited. If one shows up that's fine i will just leave at 4:30 because I am seriously just not feeling great

I don't think anyone here can or should speak for all of Western Culture. Mind narrowing this down a bit so it doesn't get closed? — bruglesco 1 min ago

it's not being sick or anything but I have had a long weekend

@ElizB :/

it's like my body has not been afforded the time to properly wind down and recover

@Mithrandir fp means incorrect? and tp means correct?

OH SHOOT! I mixed my words up ;( can a mod edit that message and correct it xD

8:54 PM
@bruglesco yep

If it gets marked correct what happens?

@bruglesco I think it just gets recorded

Once I reach 2k reputation am I able to edit my messages after the 2 minutes?

it doesn't actually do anything like flagging or deleting

Does it learn?

8:57 PM
I don't think so... @Mithrandir?

@Anilla No; only mods can edit messages after the 2 minutes. I didn't feel it was worth it to edit for a typo like that as it would cause a re-ping. Chat is full of typos ;)
@bruglesco No, but it keeps track of the feedback and allows humans to improve the regexes that catch the comments.
Posting the comment here puts more eyes on it and help make sure that comments that should be deleted get noticed.

MAkes sense
wrongo?

@Mithrandir oh oops I was only kidding :). And okay, I didn't know that, thanks

@bruglesco blame @doppelgreener :P

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/21006/… Does anyone else think this question is too broad?

@Mithrandir hah so now you just have both?

too tired to make a straight decision

@Anilla The title seems broad, but the body has a very specific scenario in it. I'd say that they should make clearer what their goal is, though - what's the outcome they'd like to achieve in this situation?
@bruglesco yep

@Mithrandir It was honestly pretty confusing to determine the correct goal; they had a huge grammatical error too. I need to revise my answer quite a bit in order to fix it to their actual intentions.
Besides that though, you'd say it'd still be on topic?

9:04 PM
Probably. I was out of the loop for a bit, though, so if something changed I might have missed it. To the best of my knowledge, though, it's on-topic, just could use a bit more polishing.
For instance, we're missing cultural information.
What are the ages of the housemates?

one person from my team is finally here :P

What kind of environment is it? If they're in college the answer might be different than if they're in their sixties.

@ElizB wahoo!! :D What was their response upon arrival?
I agree, I'll leave a comment encouraging more information from the OP.

@Anilla nothing really, she said she walked

@Anilla heh, I was thinking of writing an answer to that :P more info about the housemates could be useful, but I agree with Mith that it seems generally on-topic otherwise
also hi :) I am listening to Pentatonix now, thanks to this room

9:11 PM
@Em C ooo, you totally should. I'd be interested to hear your take on it... don't look at my answer rn :3 it's wayyyy outta line since recent edits. I'm revising as we speak. :)

i admit to not remembering how to check what specific regex caught it

@Anilla haha no worries :) I'm still brainstorming, a lot of the examples there sound like some of my family members, but I need to reflect a bit on what/if anything actually worked..
@IPSCommentBot huh?

Matched reason "experimental-aic(@scohe001)" for regex you\Wmay\W

@Mithrandir ^ that?

thanks

9:20 PM
Ohh look at me speaking things the bot doesn't like xD @EmC Sounds good to me :) I'm waiting for the OP To give more info before I revise the answer I have so far

good plan :)

@Anilla according to room tradition, you now must provide the room with cookies. either that, or @scohe001 does, for regex matching good comments ;)

@Mithrandir I hope everyone enjoys oatmeal raisin :) cause that's what I have rn

9:34 PM
I have bore witness to the traditional cookie giving. My job here is done

I can offer soup. All out of cookies here.

....can anyone think of a word that means "feeling good about what's happened that day, is feeling like what's to come should be good because I'm feeling good because of what's happened"? I was pretty sure there was a word on the tip of my tongue, but it's eluding me now...
Context:
> Everything was running smoothly. While Bailey still wasn’t entirely comfortable with the other kids yet, the ones she had met had seemed friendly enough, especially the ones she had first sat next to in English class. Feeling <word>, Bailey walked into the last class of the day – Geography.

"Content" maybe?

If things have been going poorly before, then maybe "Feeling like things were looking up, Bailey walked..."

Or "Optimistic"

9:46 PM
This^

@scohe001 No, they were fine before. Now is when everything goes down the drain;)
@Anilla That works perfectly. Thanks!

Ahh the calm before the storm, she just doesn't know it lol best of luck to her then

@Mithrandir np! Good luck to the character xD I'm quite intrigued as to what might happen

(I don't even have a plan for this story at the moment... I just saw a few scenes in my head and knew I wanted to write those scenes. This is one of those.)
@Anilla :P

@Mithrandir Ohhh that's fair. Have you ever tried writing a story with someone else? Letting it flow between writers?

9:50 PM
Yes. I nicknamed my co-author "Vanishing Girl", though, since she had a tendency to, well, vanish. We eventually dropped off the project because neither of had the time and we were having a hard time maintaining contact that was sustained enough to work on it.
We spent a dozen emails at one point just emailing the lyrics to "The Sound of Silence" one line at a time to each other :P
(Which reminds me, I should poke her.)
@Anilla It's kinda designed to give a bit of a shock to the reader ;) More than that I will not say at the moment :p

@Mithrandir Haha "Vanishing Girl" xD It's fun to co-create a work 'cause you can just contribute random snippets whenever ya got extra time. I love being shocked! Lol

Are ping sounds room specific? And if so, who sets them?

@scohe001 No; they're server-specific. chat.SE, chat.SO, and chat.meta.SE all have their own ping sounds.

Ahh got it
There go my dreams of an "arf" for this room :(

There are a few more still saved on the server in places (such as one for Ask Ubuntu or Super User), but those aren't used anymore aywhere.
@scohe001 psst... userscript

10:01 PM
Eh 90% of my time in this room is on my work machine. It's the reason I haven't delved into the wonderful world of userscript :(

Does chat.SE have a restful API? I see it has one for basically the rest of the site... not sure about this area though

nope, chat.SE has no official API. a few have been written though, most notably ChatExchange

Hmm, that's too bad. Looks like ChatExchange emulates a browser in order to interact. How is the IPS Bot setup then?

it uses ChatX, a Ruby gem for SE chat interaction
...it's at times like these that I realize just how much almost useless esoteric knowledge about SE I have picked up and remembered over the past few years...

Shh don't think about it like that
Maybe you be a CM one day and then you'll get paid for knowing all these things
Or maybe there'll be some life-or-death scenario where your SE knowledge saves you and your friends
Who knows

10:11 PM
pffff :P

Hey, if you didn't know that you'd have made me ask Google. You helped a buddy out! :D

...what're the chances you describe a professor in your story, define an age and appearance, think of a name, and then out of curiosity Google the name and discover that a professor that age with that name actually exists? O_O
@Anilla heh:P
(I can't type today. Oof.)

@Mithrandir I would say pretty high if their name is common enough lol. Is there anyway to propose an API for chat? Would people be on board for such a thing? Lol

@Anilla I believe it's been proposed. Chat hasn't seen much development in years, though, as SE needed to focus on keeping the lights on and chat really doesn't make them any money. I'd personally love to see an official way to run a chatbot, but I don't see it happening any time soon. SE staff has worked with the developers of ChatExchange to make sure that it doesn't break some essential bots, though

10:40 PM
note to self: find time for writing before midnight and later, it'll be healthier
