at places I've worked they usually introduce themselves at a meeting, or the manager walks them around to different offices and and chit chats for a minute then moves them along to the next place

Yeah, our vp is really weird about stuff like that. We had an open house to show off our new office a few weeks ago. We had all of us (about 30-35) and then maybe 10-15 guests. He kept going around telling everyone who was talking to a coworker that they needed to go and talk to people that we don't work with.

A lot of people invited their significant others, we had a few clients there, some people invited various people they knew (former clients, friends, etc)

(agh I'm visiting MIL right now and she's having an angry phone conversation with someone about an order that got messed up, and SO is having a loud conversation on speakerphone with someone else, aaa)

Well I notice that the few festivities we do celebrate are actually ancient Iranian traditions, rather than religious ones.

In religious holidays, when they're not sad, it just plays some joyful-ish music on TV and we make awkward "yaaaay?" gestures.
