Q: Bringing up financial concerns with partner’s parents

KrúžokMy partner’s family has been financially struggling a long time (way before I even entered the picture). Their parents frequently ask for money (which at times can be their entire weeks paycheck). As we develop our relationship, I’m starting to become concerned with our future. Eventually, mone...

Q: ❄️ Winter Bash 2019 Hat list ❄️

DavidThe Winter Bash is back and the hats are listed below. As always, there are only two answers: one for the secret hats, and one for the regular hats. The secret hat list will be updated as we learn them. Only edit the secret hat answer with definitive and correct triggers. This is not the place ...

@JAD thanks! I searched for "secret hats 2019" ... Guess my search patterns still need to improve ^^

JAD
I just scrolled through the tag :)

@Rainbacon What about ts? :P
Morning by the way

Love this answer! Bonus points if you can get the sub-conversation in English about learning their language. Even short term this has a lot of positive effects to be included. You're showing interest in their culture, you're learning (slowly) to understand them, it's one of the friendliest way to remind them you cannot participate in their conversation in their native tongue and it can cause great laughs when you accidentally use swearwords in the language! — Imus 2 mins ago

Q: Is there a polite way to ask for the person calling to identify themselves first?

potionpot1I've been getting a lot of spam phone calls. Today I had one from a strange number (started with 1188). When I said hello the person asked to speak to me by name. I confirmed it was me speaking, but the rest of call was so strange I'm concerned it may have been some scam. Is there a polite way ...

@ExtrovertedMainMan phrasing?

@AlexRobinson phrasing, opinion based, ... you name it. It can be salvaged however
I can't deal with it rn though, I'm stuck with a stupid programming issue

11:23 AM
thats fair
i'm pretty much in full "end of year" mode so can't salvage rn

@avazula Happy birthday :)
i'll join the 20's club in less than a month
Interesting article but this happens everywhere it seems, I saw an article on Facebook too

You're all so young :O
Happy birthday, @avazula!

@avazula We still have to see if they actually make an offer, but thank you!
@Belle TS is ok, but it's still javascript under the covers, which means that weird things happen

Thanks everyone :)
@Rainbacon Fingers crossed! Let us know how it goes :)

Oh yeah, happy birthday @avazula!

shoo!

@Rainbacon isn't TS javascript but with more stuff?

JAD
with an attempt at type safety

@CaldeiraG Yeah, it's technically a typed superset of javascript, but before it ever runs it gets translated into javascript, so it's really more of a glorified linter

@Rainbacon Ah I see :)

2:46 PM
@AlexRobinson tbh if I had non-binding close votes I would vote it as a duplicate of the one I commented ;)
@avazula happy birthday!!

Thank you :3

@EmC thats fair

3:04 PM
@Rainbacon I'm a proud angular developer -sticks out tongue-

Angular is quite nice, I just wish I could write it in Haskell :)
And the job I'm in talks about is Angular on the front end

I tried Angular but it has a lot of stuff to learn
Find the learning path quite steep :P
I'm doing discord bots for fun now

3:20 PM
@CaldeiraG Did you go through the "Tour of Heroes" tutorial?

i'm so close to my second silver badge - 80 flags

I found a secret hat :D

my hat is secret... i know not how i got it however

JAD

@JAD ahh yes, the "warm welcome"
also could a mod just delete a whole load of comments on this question, there are so many bad comments that don't add anything and have no place on IPS

3:38 PM
@Rainbacon I've seen some stuff from there but no, i didn't finish that tutorial
@AlexRobinson 72/80 here
@AlexRobinson that hat is pretty easy, got it on the first day of hats, both on SU and Travel.SE
In fact, I probably have some kind of website on my pc made with Angular

Finding stuff to flag on IPS isn't hard. ;)

very basic stuff tho

@Mithical yeah, i once got 5 flags on the same answer on a given question.....

@Mithical There is kinda of a lack of questions though :p

nowadays if something gets really bad i just add custom flag "blog post worth of comments"

3:40 PM
got 1027 helpful flags over at SU with ease

@CaldeiraG It's one of the better tutorials I've seen for any framework

@Rainbacon I need to take a look at that again

4:02 PM
@CaldeiraG after making a few flags, snap :D

Happy birthday @avazula!

@Mithical Thanks! :)

4:29 PM
Fun fact that I think the room will enjoy. One of my coworkers is giving a lunch and learn on the intersection of identity, tech, and the workplace

@Rainbacon Tell them about Otia, they should love it xD

What is Otia?

@Rainbacon It's a zine that covers work (especially in tech), passions, and what links them together
Here's an example on software engineering and martial arts

Hmm, it doesn't come up in a google search. When I search Otia I get some sort of sports memorabilia dealer

Their goal is to prove that you can learn stuff from your hobbies that's useful in the workplace too
I actually had my own article in their zine a few months ago :D

5:30 PM
@avazula Happy Birthday!!!
(also check Discord)

5:44 PM
should be at 75/80 for my silver badge once those flags go through

6:23 PM
Hi! My age-old answers don't seem to meet new site policies anymore (people comment on them). I don't want to be involved with IPS, so could the mods here be so kind and just delete all of my answers? This should solve all problems. Thank you!

user15026
@AnneDauntedGoFundMonica If you don't want to be involved with the site as a whole, it might be easier to just ask for your IPS account to be deleted?

I thought we had decided not to judge older answers by the newer citation expectations?

we don't mass-delete answers. answers that were flagged and don't have backup, but were posted prior to enforcing backup policy, we'll put post notices on but not mod-delete

ah gotcha
So, my coworker brought up an interesting point in her lunch and learn that I hadn't considered before. When she was talking about things that we can do to be more inclusive she mentioned having a growth mindset. She compared it to the mindset that the company has about growth in other areas. It's fairly well accepted at my current company that it's fine to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and work to be better in the future.
She talked about taking the same approach to inclusion. Specifically, that nobody is expecting that we be perfectly inclusive, just that when we do things that aren't inclusive, we learn from those situations to improve so that we are more inclusive in the future.

6:40 PM
that seems like a healthy way to look at it :)

Yeah it is. I know that when the topic of inclusion comes up I often feel like there's a lot of pressure to be perfect. One thing she mentioned is that a lot of people feel like they can't come forward and ask for help on how to be inclusive because of that.

6:56 PM
yeahh. context is really important, too.. a lot of the "I'm scared to even ask questions now" stuff I see kind of neglects that, say, posting a bunch of questions on a random social media post is different from talking with your friend who you have a close relationship, which is also different from asking someone who is explicitly interested in helping educate others..

7:21 PM
I was rebasing my code and missed one of the conflicts when I was resolving the merge and accidentally checked a git diff in to my branch. I think I'm ready for the holidays

I feel that.. having major trouble concentrating today :\

Q: Is is rude to switch language in group conversation?

JoleneI live in Miami. lately i have been getting irked by my fellow colleagues. At work we speak English, Spanish, and Creole. ( with Everyone being fully literate in English having Graduated from an English High School). At time we will be having a English Conversation with American, Latin, and Haiti...

@ExtrovertedMainMan POB

probably could be saved with an edit but i can't do that right now.. and already has an answer for "is it rude" :/
summary of this week -

why are computers hard -.-

the outer shell protects the soft fleshy organs within

8:19 PM
@Mithical I had always suspected there was a tiny little gremlin inside of my computer doing all of that math on a chalkboard. Thanks for confirming :)

D:
gross :p

@Rainbacon Is that why being on a PC after midnight is highly discouraged?

Yes, it's also why you can't get your PC wet

The health precautions now make sense
Thank you, Internet.
@ExtrovertedMainMan what's with the sudden language interest on IPS

user15026
I have learned so much about computers today, thank you :P

Just asked my first ELU question if any of you happen to know how to answer it

Q: “Mx” the gender-neutral honorific

Mari-Lou AThe gender-neutral honorific “Mx” has its own entry in the OED since August 2015, so no one can argue it doesn't exist. According to The Sunday Times, central and local governments have been quietly using this [mysterious] honorific in their documents and forms for at least two years. British go...

Q: How can I tell my brother to stop giving me condoms for my birthday?

Sam SuchsEvery year since I turned 18, my older brother has given me a 3-pack of condoms for my birthday with a note that says, "Maybe this year, loser." The first time it happened, I just kind of laughed it off. But I just turned 22 this year, and he is still doing this. What makes this particularly st...
