Q: How to respond to a stranger's compliments on my dressing

enlighten_meThe compliments I receive about my choice of clothes are from my relatives and close friends, which I can just say "thanks!" without sounding disinterested or off-putting as they know me well and expressing my gratitude with a "thanks!" would suffice. However, today was dress-down day at the off...

Should the interstitial page be enabled here?

What the neck is that.
Goodnight :)

user15026
4:16 AM
@gparyani Maybe you should start with explaining what that is, and why it's useful - not everyone has the knowledge you do.

user15026
Then once people know what it is, they can posit to it's potential usefulness

user15026
Okay, so what do you mean by "enabled", then?

The basic gist is, when a user attempts to ask a question for the first time, they are directed to a page where they are asked to look at the site guidelines and "agree" to them before being granted access to the question form.

user15026
Honestly, it just becomes one more thing to blindly click through

4:18 AM
On Stack Overflow and some other sites, this is enabled. On other sites, the page still exists, but is unlinked.

user15026
people blindly click through EULAs and other things of this ilk all teh time

user15026
expecting people to actually get anything out of something they can just blindly go "okay" to and then never really interact with again has never made much sense to me

user15026
I don't see it actually making any difference

The thing is, the user thus cannot use the defense that they didn't look at any rules and thought it would be acceptable.

user15026
shrug There are lots of other defenses tehy can use

user15026
4:19 AM
And like...it won't replace them actually taking the time to see how a particular site works and lives and breathes

user15026
so even if they do read it, it won't stop potentially poor questions in their entirety

4:44 AM
Unrelated: It's been experimentally proven that users don't usually read the right sidebar, and those who do usually don't notice it until after they've already typed up their question, and then think "they won't mind, right?".

Hello! i'm thinking about what to ask that relates to my being deaf and first interactions always having that edge of awkwardness when I say, "by the way, i am deaf and i might ask you to repeat what you said a couple of times" especially if it is a noisy environment. i've always laughed it off but people either learn that i am actually a nice person to interact with or run away. heh.
i feel like i have a ton of questions in my head but don't quite have the phrasing right

@ElizabethB that's vaguely...
I talk too fast.

Deaf or true deaf. I'm assuming deaf. Just ask them to say it clearly and loudly.

So people either ask me to slow down
or I use the "talking with someone very slow" speed. Which I hate

@ElizabethB I believe we had a similar question once upon a time. I'm searching for it...

@FreezePhoenix I'm not sure if I understood that correctly, I always politely ask them to repeat it, but after at least 2-3 times, they say "nevermind" and i'm basically left chasing after them saying "no, i really do want to understand your question/comment, i am really just not understanding it yet!"

4:46 PM
@ElizabethB I think he means whether you can't hear anything or its partial?

^ correct

i was born profoundly deaf and have cochlear implants, for 15 and 12 years (Right side then left), so I missed out on some brain development time, and still do depend on sign language interpretation and reminding them i need at least 2-3 repetitions of the question.

ah
@ElizabethB and I suppose they help but arn't perfect
but... you'd not have a frame of reference for 'perfect'

This might help a little? I remember it because I answered it :) interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/6422/1599

Q: How to politely ask someone to repeat themselves

sblI work at a restaurant and have to take orders over the phone all the time. My hearing isn't the best, and a lot of times I have trouble understanding what the customer is saying. I often have to ask people to repeat themselves 3 or 4 times before I can understand them. How do I ask someone to re...

I found this, and it is similar. I find that it happens when i am socializing, not working (the majority of the time). I also worked as a stocker in the produce section, for about a year before going into my masters degree program, and find those answers very similar to what I did.\
It's after that initial mutual understanding that I am deaf, may need a bit of repeating, that there is an awkward pause where this new acquaintance may decide to hang around or dash away and avoid me... that's what I want to prevent from happening. I usually add a bit of humor in there.

hah.
My response to that might be "Mind if I text?"
(I often actually find that more confortable)

one such interaction happened at the indoor rock climbing gym, my hands are absolutely tired and covered in chalk... (shrugs) it's a good suggestion.

@JourneymanGeek Sounds like a good idea for such a situation.

5:03 PM
assuming the other person gets that its as much for your benefit as theirs lol

Yes :P they must understand they are less likely to get their point across if they don't use a comfortable medium.

Yeah, i've just seen so many people go "nevermind" and walk away without really having an intelligent conversation with me. Their loss...
The issue is that I speak for myself so well, that people assume that I can hear well enough.

@ElizabethB That may be the only way to look at it, as their loss... I don't know how you usually present it, but you might try making it look smaller than it actually is, and focus on how it's handled instead of how it limits oppurtunities. 'I can do ...' instead of 'I can't...'

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that's what i've done

@ElizabethB did the best you can do then, at least from my perspective ;)

5:22 PM
Alright. I just know that there's people out there that have the same interaction, if not worse. because i am deaf, my mom made a point to teach me idioms and references to movies I might hear, and how to basically learn how to interact with hearing people, and thats the basis of my in depth analysis of how I interact with people, and why.

is there any word that can be used to refer to any person informally (irrespective of gender status)? For example, "'Sup -bro-", "whatup -sis-" are too gender specific...
and dude and dudette are also weird...

What's up folks?

Not much :)

@AbhigyanC it might just be a California thing, but I casually call everyone dude/man

I would think intentionally (attempting to) making eye contact and just saying "what's up?" or "hey there, how's it going?"

user15026
5:25 PM
@AbhigyanC I'm not sure that in those examples you need a person-word

@AbhigyanC "Pal" or "buddy" maybe? I've heard "friendo" recently.
"Fellow human" in a robotic tone is catching on in my friend group.
3

in American Sign Language, all we sign is "what's up!" or just wave at the person... no gender specific terms needed.

5:36 PM
So I have a friend who has an interpersonal question, and I'm trying to encourage them to post their question in IPS. Problem is, I've always been really bad at gauging what the community does and doesn't deem an appropriate question, which is why most of my interactions with IPS has been with answering things, not writing or reviewing questions.

So their basic question is, "how do I tell my parents that I no longer want to see them on holidays?" And I'm worried that the community would collectively decry her question for appearing to look for a script, or something. She also added to m

I can relate to your friend, because holidays are overwhelming for me and my husband (even more so for him)... I don't have enough experience on the site to accurately say whether it would be supported or not, but I would support your friend asking the question.

6:12 PM
@TheTinyMan Has your friend already tried anything? Are they trying to avoid a specific reaction? What about their way of thinking of handling it might go wrong and do they want to improve? If they can answer one of those, it might be a good question

@Tinkeringbell Thanks, I will pass that on! :-)

You're welcome!

Now I once had a question on IPS

@FreezePhoenix VTC

@TheTinyMan You bet that happened.

6:22 PM
@FreezePhoenix Aww...I was trying to be silly, now I feel mean, I'm sorry! D:
Also I adore your name and icon. xD I am tempted to go into my LARPing history as relates to phoenixes but am trying to restrain myself. ;-)

We can do that later :)
The questions was about something I don't remember ATM. But i clearly stated that I wanted to understand a certain behavior so I could improve upon my responses. Then, it was closed as off topic, and a person put a comment saying "No wish to improve. Voting to close."

@FreezePhoenix Wow, that's crappy.

I've noticed the following scenario several times:

Person A does something wrong (The details do not matter). Later, Person B begins to antagonize Person A about their flaws and what they did wrong. Eventually, an authority named Authority A breaks it up, and hands Person A a minor punishment, and rewards Person B for their behavior.
At first, I thought this could be favoritism, but then I saw it happen the reverse way with the same two people. Person A got rewarded, etc.

So I am left wondering, why does this occur? Is there something I might be missing?
^ Question

6:44 PM
In this case, the details do matter, because it's basically a question of who's right or wrong and whether or not you've been misinterpreting the situation or not. And before you go share, I don't think I want to know the details.

I wasn't planning on sharing details

Great, that means we're in the same mood :)

@TheTinyMan Lets talk about that :)

6:55 PM
@FreezePhoenix So, are you familiar with LARPing at all?

Never heard of it - lemme look it up
Oh ok yes I've heard of it but not by that name

The first LARP character that I played that I really loved...so I learned that you can be a "mythical creature-kin" in this system. I wanted to be a guy with a big sword who healed people a lot, so I was like, "well, what kind of creature is both physically strong and associated with life and healing?" Almost created a unicorn-kin, but decided that would weird people out for some reason or another and went with a phoenix-kin instead.

Thing is...I'm a pyrophobe. xD But my character, I decided, REALLY likes fire, and all things associated with it. And then, the costume I came up with wou
AND I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ICE AND COLD AND STUFF BUT THAT'S ASSOCIATED WITH DEATH IN THESE THINGS AND NOT LIFE AND IT MAKES ME SO MAD
and now, today, I'm playing a character in a different game, who is a paladin of the god of justice...and the sun. >.< I HATE LIGHT AND I HATE FIRE AND I WANT TO BE COOL AND DARK AND PLEASANT AND NOT BURNING!
..now that I've said all that I'm not sure that it was a very good story xD

That was decent
For a short story

Well, yes. xD Or an amusing...I dunno...personal, tale, or something.
falls into awkward silence, needs IPS help

@TheTinyMan It's probably called self-disclosure? :)

7:03 PM
@Tinkeringbell Man, usually my self-disclosures are kept out of polite company! :o

@TheTinyMan Paladins are cool. related: freezephoenix.github.io/Angels-And-Demons/game.html instructions: very top of codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/196291/…
I'm trying to decide which side to put Phoenix on

That's really cool. I don't LARP, but I love reading books on fantasy... the latest I love are books from Stephen R. Lawhead. Celtic mythology + classic tales like robin hood, king arthur, etc... yeah.

@FreezePhoenix Maybe both? xD
@FreezePhoenix Phoenixes are typically associated with life, as are angels, though...

@TheTinyMan Ahh too complicated

@ElizabethB That sounds great! :-)
@FreezePhoenix You could maybe have phoenixes on the side of the angels, and cryophoenixes on the side of the demons. cheerfully perpetuates the stereotype that he hates

7:07 PM
@TheTinyMan Well that wouldn't put me where I belong, would it XD

I don't know, would it? xD Which side DO you belong on? ;-)

i'm absolutely in love with his books. i could go on but my reminder to myself is "keep it simple, if others press you with questions, do answer but otherwise, clam up. they might not be interested!"

@ElizabethB I might ask some but I am about to step away from the keyboard for the weekend. Gonna go be that sun paladin in a few hours. xD

@ElizabethB I would only be non-interested if it was the second time you were telling me.

@ElizabethB You might love the Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley too then ;)

7:10 PM
@FreezePhoenix Gotcha! no worries.
@FreezePhoenix I'm not sure I understand clearly... is it non interesting to you if i told you of how much i loved the books, the author, etc again at a later time or twice in a row within a short span of time?

@ElizabethB short span.

@Tinkeringbell (looks up the Avalon series) ooooooooh me likey
Gotcha, thanks!

(I like those too :P)
You're welcome!

However, if it was the 30th time total i might get tired of it too

especially when the stories are being told in the perspective of women....

7:14 PM
@ElizabethB I... never really thought much about that, seemed completely normal :)

well, there are many stories out there in the view of many powerful men and fewer women, like the one i'm reading now, where Merian (Marian from Robin Hood) is pretty much the only woman that is actively a character in the foreground, while there are many men around her that make decisions and such

Oh sure :) But the stories are probably products of their time ;) If you add in a high dose of fantasy, of course it gets much easier to add in a female character :P

@Tinkeringbell of course, yeah. i love watching those stories unfold. their interaction also shows me what the interpersonal culture was like at that time

@ElizabethB I think I once poked in this chat the idea that we should allow history questions on Interpersonal Skills as well :) It was just a wild idea, and not a good one XD

@Tinkeringbell ahh, i can imagine... there's a lot of history to cover.

7:21 PM
@ElizabethB Also, 'how would an Ancient Egyptian politely assert a boundary' just doesn't seem right :)

@Tinkeringbell haha yeah
what about within the last generation? Interactions between grandparents and people in their 20s?

@ElizabethB Those are okay :) Especially if you think there's a generation gap, that's a good thing to mention in a question!
You'll often see people asking either 'where are you from' or 'how old are you and the people involved' ;)

Yeah! I'll put that on the back burner, because there are culutral differences... in the deaf community, there are definite gaps between the older and newer generations, over disputes on medical "solutions" to hearing loss

Huh? Really? Or is that something like me wanting a walker and scooter as soon as I'm unable to walk, just to keep freedom, but my grandparents absolutely refusing them?

7:26 PM
@IPSCommentBot Thank you :)

@Tinkeringbell mmmm. something like that. if your grandparents say that is violating their ability to move their body... really, it's mostly about cochlear implants and hearing aids, whether a child should receive "hearing assistance" in order to improve their life (as medical professionals say)

Hmmm. Not really no, for my grandparents it's probably more of a 'we don't need that, we're aging and not accepting it'. ;)
I think the 'improve their life' part may be what's bugging people here?
Maybe if it's phrased like 'give them the experience of sound as well' that might be received a lot different...

yeah, something like that. they declare loudly that their life is just fine, frustrations or not, and they managed just fine... while i am grateful for medical technology like my cochlear implants.
people have said to my face "what have you done??!!" "They cut open your head?!" and i have to explain that they made no impact on the structure of my head, and it improved my life...

@ElizabethB I guess these are the hard decisions you have to make as a parent, until your kid is grown enough to make them themselves :)

yeah, that's what my mom did for me. i was 10 when i asked about it persistently

7:35 PM
@ElizabethB Wait, but they did cut open your head? :P

my two sisters are also deaf, they have CIs too (cochlear implants), and they received them younger, and their understanding and expression of spoken english is astounding.

@ElizabethB 10 is a reasonable age for children to start getting some say over their lives I think. I guess at that time, I was allowed to pick my own clothes for the day, hairdo, and sometimes even wear make-up (for very, very special parties).
@ElizabethB Yep. And I guess that if they wanted too, they could turn them of/stop wearing them (there's an outer part you have to wear, right?)... or even get them removed again?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implant
lots of info there... no, they did not cut open my head. they made a skin-deep incision behind my ear, made a space, and inserted the internal component. no big impact.
no sawing or drilling at all, haha

@ElizabethB Hmm... that's pretty disappointing :P No big stories!

haha well, i'd rather keep my head intact rather than tell a big story...

7:39 PM
Hahaha okay, you win that round :P

hahaha i've gone many rounds with angry older deaf folks that just insist that having a CI is basically an insult...
"Much of the strongest objection to cochlear implants has come from within the Deaf community, some of whom are pre-lingually deaf people whose first language is a sign language. For some in the Deaf community, cochlear implants are an affront to their culture, which, as they view it, is a minority threatened by the hearing majority.[1] This is an old problem for the deaf community, going back as far as the 18th century with the argument of manualism vs. oralism."

@ElizabethB They don't know what they're missing out on ;) and .. to be honest, I sometimes wonder if medical technology isn't going too far, fixing stuff that really should maybe not be fixed... But I leave everyone to their own choices :). I can understand the point of view you just shared, but at the same time it feels like a bunch of people that still want to live as hunter gatherers forcing that kind of existence on their children, after they've experienced city living ;)

@Tinkeringbell hah, yeah. I still do identify as Deaf, am fluent in American Sign Language, but often I feel i'm in the middle of the two cultures (hearing and deaf). it's an interesting position. i can speak for myself well, that I can pass for someone that maybe is from a different country (because of my "deaf" accent and struggle with enunciating frustrating words.)

'frustrating words' :D
I've never heard anyone call words frustrating, but that does convey your meaning well :)

i'm in the environmental science field... yep, there's a lot of science lingo to work my mouth around...

7:48 PM
We had a boy in high school class that was also deaf (had hearing aids, no implants, maybe because they weren't all that common yet?). Even with the aids, he still couldn't hear much.

In French classes, he used to sit behind me, especially on exams. I let him cheat, I didn't care and he always was grateful. One day though, the pancake decided to just write down every single answer I wrote down on his sheet too. Including 10 or so answers to questions that we had to answer by listening to a radio fragment in French XD
That was the day the teacher found out I was letting him see my answer sheet, and the day she took care to always switch my papers around so that my answer sheet was firmly in front of me and blocked from his view :)

Yikes. i can see both sides of that.
That happens a lot to deaf students... they try to get by. Did he have an interpreter?

No, but he had some sort of special .. bricks .. he could attach to his aids, and then there was this sender that you would wear around your neck and it would send a signal directly to his hearing aids? And you were always supposed to look at him while talking, so he could read your lips.
I met another girl while studying archaeology, she did have an interpreter. That took some getting used to.

@ElizabethB Something like that, although his looked different. The description fits though :)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, how so? i haven't heard from others how people either ignore or get used to an interpreter in the classroom.
@Tinkeringbell Perhaps an older system? they were pretty bulky

7:53 PM
@ElizabethB Probably. This was over 10 years ago :)
Possibly 15 ;)

ahh, gotcha. Yeah, bricks would be a good description haha

@ElizabethB This wasn't really the classroom, but on a dig site, where we both were interns.
It's just kinda strange, you're used to making eye contact with the person you're talking with, but sometimes the interpreter would stand behind you and she in front, and I wouldn't be sure who to make eye contact with.
It felt strange completely ignoring the interpreter like she wasn't there, but then again it also took some getting used to to actually address the girl instead of the interpreter.

hearing people interacting with interpreters while the deaf person is there is another case of very awkward situations. This is a very, very common question. you make eye contact with the deaf person, and address the girl; the interpreter's role is basically just be invisible and be the translator.

Well, we did chat with the interpreter too, but that was mostly like smalltalk, when we were all talking about hobbies and stuff, we included the interpreter too.
It's just really strange to 'ghost' someone like that, no matter how used they may be too it :) We all managed though (we got the rulebook :P)

I can understand the awkwardness with not knowing who to address, and I encounter this all the time with people who just didn't know until the interpreter or myself communicated what was going on.
@Tinkeringbell yeah, i can get that. i've seen people try to not "ignore" the interpreter, to be polite, but the point of them being there is just to facilitate communication. there's a lot of work going on in the interpreter's brain to translate from a spoken to visual language, and when that's interrupted (politely or rudely, doesnt matter) it kinda throws them off

8:00 PM
Yeah, which I was glad that the interpreter explained what she was doing and how it really wasn't bad to ignore her right from the start.

It's just that even though you know, you keep that weird gut feeling that it's somehow wrong... you want to focus on the voice you're hearing, that's what you've been taught to do all your life :)
@ElizabethB Hahaha yeah, I guess so. It takes some effort to really be able to make such conversations natural :)

i've seen that happen so many times, and i grimace and express my sympathies to the interpreter

Hahaha and use a sign if it gets really bad? I mean, no one will know when you two start gossiping XD

if it's in a classroom, i usually open myself up for any questions, and usually am not shy to correct simple references like instead of "tell her xyz" just talk to me directly.
@Tinkeringbell I have done this so many times it's not even funny... (maybe somewhat funny, but nobody really knows)

@ElizabethB Yeah sorry. The thought is funny from an outside perspective, it's probably very frustrating if you're in the middle of it.
@ElizabethB Ooh am I glad I managed not to do that one! And that took effort.

i have whole conversations while i'm supposed to pay attention in class, but we all know that some professors are just...... not .... (insert nice but not mean word describing their teaching style/method)
no, it's all funny. like i said, i have conversations without anyone really knowing
i'm not one to hold grudges... unless the person is a repeat offender. xP

8:05 PM
Hahaha but a repeat offender has it coming :P

oh yeah. once i walked out of a class because he didnt provide good closed captioning for a 50- minute documentary. I was so pissed.

@ElizabethB Errr. yeah. I'd have just gone home and done something fun too :)

the guy just didnt get that my interpreter cant work on a video cold turkey that is longer than 30 seconds.
that was in the college policy........ ergh.

(It's nice talking to you, but it's about bedtime. Although it's weekend tomorrow, my alarm will go off :( Goodnight!)

okay, i am gonna hop off and bus home, and hopefully have something with generational gaps!
perfect timing haha. okay have a good night, and talk later!

8:08 PM
@ElizabethB Hahaha, 'but you have your translator'. I guess it doesn't help you see those news reports on tv with an interpreter, those do last 30 minutes :)
@ElizabethB See ya!
have a good ride and a nice weekend :)

note-they usually have contextual knowledge
whereas my interpreters in class did not

@ElizabethB I know ;)

okay, good night
:)

Q: How to encourage two of my friends to at least try to communicate again despite a really bad breakup in the past?

Iter AtorI have two ( I believe ) close friends in the university, since the first year. As the weeks passed, I felt less and less part of our little group, and I think the reason was that they started to date, and I felt a bit like the third wheel. Around the end of the first semester they broke up realy...

Q: Is there a term for a person who is half British and half East Asian?

They are all very nice people, and I was just wondering, is there an ethnic term for people like this? (Please excuse...
