@Tinkeringbell If I may ask, why did you make a binding "Leave Closed" review here? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/review/reopen/11349

user15026
"How do I tactfully do x" doesn't always make a question work.

A J
@gparyani I guess this has been discussed at length already.

@AJ No, Tinkeringbell wasn't a mod at the time.

A J
She was.

user15026
Honestly, we've discussed this question so many times

5:41 AM
Even when she reviewed a prior RV task as a non-mod, she didn't explain her decision to review it as that.

user15026
I think it's kinda at the point where you just gotta take the lessons from it and move in

user15026
@gparyani She doesn't have to, though

user15026
And chasing people around for stuff like this....isn't helpful

So I can't ask a mod why they took a moderator action?

user15026
That's not what I'm saying

user15026
5:43 AM
sigh it's too late to get into this, I am going to elect to go to bed instead of having my words misinterpreted

@gparyani well, it can be seen as being somewhat... well, we gotta do what we gotta do. If folks are constantly asking us why, we can't pay attention to all the other things we have to.
If its important, meta please.

TBH I would have preferred to ask my own reopen request for it, Crafter jumped the gun in asking it.
@JourneymanGeek Mine would be a duplicate.

Q: What makes question 11643, about talking to flight attendants when the plane has a problem, off-topic?

Crafter0800Question 11643: "How can I properly ask a flight attendant what's going on if I know my plane has a problem?" has been voted as "off-topic" by 7 total people now, while has been voted "on topic" by 5. I'm one of the 5 that believes it to be on-topic, but was wondering why it is off topic? The way...

user15026
@gparyani Then take what's in that meta, learn from it, and move on

One of the answers was deleted; did the author voluntarily delete it?

user15026
Not everything you do needs a personal response from a mod/CM/whoever

5:45 AM
@Ash The mod did respond, but it has heavy downvotes. (FYI I didn't vote on it.)

A J
@gparyani yes of course

user15026
@gparyani Then that's the response. Leave it at that.

user15026
Sometimes you gotta know when to fold 'em, to quote Kenny Rogers

Did you read the answer and its comments?

user15026
@gparyani I like that you automatically assume I wouldn't've

user15026
5:46 AM
That's not fair.

user15026
Please stop this sort of assuming.

It's basing a close reason on the answer. If the answer is that I shouldn't do it, go ahead and post it as an answer, don't close it.
@Ash I was expecting a literal "yes" or "no".

@gparyani it isn't as much about that as "Hey, there's proper channels to take care of these things"
There's ... well rules.... and a way things are done.

user15026
You can't expect to circumvent that stuff and have it sit well with people.

@John I agree that the flight attendant would probably respond like that; but it doesn't mean OP can't/shouldn't ask. I just think we aren't well suited to deal with the question, because it is likely more an airline policy issue than an IPS one. Flight attendants not being able to provide additional information isn't the same as you not being allowed to ask them for that information. I don't think it's unreasonable for a passenger to ask a attendant what is going on if they notice something (and the attendant is able to take questions); it's just also reasonable to be told "it's all okay". — JMac Apr 6 at 19:11
@Ash Circumvent what?
Anyway...back to the main point: I wanted to know from Tinkeringbell why she reviewed, bindingly as a mod, to leave it closed. I'm sure she knew her decision was binding, and that she probably exercised much more care in her decision. If she were a non-mod I wouldn't be asking. (The reason I asked her before as a non-mod was because we were talking about it.)
And please excuse me for being direct. It's just my communication style. I sometimes fail at congeniality; I'm trying hard.

6:03 AM
Just an observation...IPS seems to have quite a few users from NL

6:23 AM
@gparyani Just a guess but since no substantial edits had been made to the question once it was closed there was no reason to revisit the decision to close the question in the first place.
The only edit made to the question in the last two months is the addition of a comment to the markdown. Nothing visible to the question has changed.
If a significant edit had been made it would be worthwhile to reconsider the question but as is there isn't anything new to say about the question that wasn't already said in March.

@sphennings Ah, I see that the system makes you view the revision rather than the question. But it would have been better if reopen reviewers had read the question from a fresh perspective. So I can see why @Tinkeringbell may have bindingly left it closed (but I still would like confirmation from her that that's the case).
Blame the system.
My edit wouldn't have pushed it, as it was more than five days after it was closed. I believe I edited it after the first reopen vote. So it's more of a system bug.

It's a good way to see if the close reason for the question has been addressed.

But if someone votes to reopen, it shouldn't show the revision by default. It should just show the question (as it did initially, before my edit).
If, on the other hand, it was added to the reopen queue by virtue of an edit within five days, it should show the revision.

The question in it's current form is entered into the queue. I can look at all the edits that were made since the question was closed in March and see that no major changes have been made.

Out of curiosity, that's why you voted to Leave Closed?
@sphennings Looking at the question from a fresh, unclouded-by-existing-closure view, would you vote to close it?

6:38 AM
@gparyani This has all been discussed before. There's nothing to be gained by rehashing it another time. I'm going to put on my Room Owner hat and consider the discussion of this question over.

7:32 AM
Morning :) Got to try out the headphones in public transport today. They work! :D

Sorry for my earlier pings. Metal Sonic took over my account (i.e. I lost sight of myself). Feel free to answer if you want, but don't feel pressured.

Give her some time to catch up on the chat first :)

@gparyani I am not going to undermine the Room Owners powers by restarting a discussion they said should stop, and neither should you.

@Tinkeringbell If I may ask, what Arduino projects are you working on now?

@gparyani None. I just started a new project at work (new language, IDE)... and I've been crocheting a lot. Maybe I'm going to make some sort of shift-stick with my brother this summer holiday for his racing games.
If he still has his mind set on having one by then ;)

7:44 AM
@Tinkeringbell What sort of racing games?

I think he wants the shift-stick for rally games, although he does Formula1 racing too (He's also modding competitive racing leagues for formula1).

@Tinkeringbell Which headphones, again?

Sid
@Tinkeringbell wait, your brother is a racer?

7:59 AM
@Sid Hahaha no... online ;)
Not good enough to be a pro e-sporter either, but he's doing the moderating :)
@gparyani New ones ;) Sony, WX1000-somethings. They have a very good noise cancellation (according to reviews, and now that I have them, I agree).

I got the Bose QuietComfort 25, and it's quite effective
Just its battery life isn't that great.

I used mine throughout the weekend, which was at least 18 hours I guess... Apparently mine has around 40 hours of battery life, which should easily last me a week of commuting ;)

My previous ones, Sony MDR-ZX110NC, which were super cheap but of great value, had a battery life of about 60 hours.

Oh nice ;) These were quite expensive, but I like good sound and noise cancelling (and they're wireless with controls on the headphones like pause, volume up/down, next/previous song)... I decided to spend some of my holiday money on it.

The newer QuietComfort 35 has those, but I wanted a wired model, so I went for the older model. I watch videos on my computer, and I find that wireless speakers tend to exhibit lag (which I am extremely sensitive to).

8:09 AM
@gparyani Never really noticed lag, but mine stuttered a few times. I blamed the bluetooth dongle on my PC though, not the headphones ;)

@Tinkeringbell I have the Sony Mx1000 and their noise cancellation was the best I found. The bose QC35 were pretty nice but I just couldn't get over how the Sony's got rid of a lot of the noise in the shop around me where the Bose didn't. It was extremely close between the two though...

The Bose headphones are exceptionally good at removing jet engine noise

@Henders I have looked up the version number, I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM2's
A coworker just tried them on since we're on an open floor plan with lots of background noise... and you don't hear a thing at all! :D
I like how these allow me to say 'focus on voice' and I still won't hear any background noise, but I do hear the person talking to me

A J
@Henders you have what?!
That's cool!

8:24 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that's a great feature too. The only thing I find with that is my keyboard noise seems to be in that frequency range so I hear more of that :P

@Henders Hmmm.. haven't tried that yet :P Although I can stand that better than the constant ... 'geroezemoes' of people in the background ;)

@Tinkeringbell Heh, that's true
@AJ Yep, they're great.

A J
My parents will beat the hell out of me if they see me traveling/walking with those headphones on. ;)

I must admit I'm not wearing these while navigating traffic either :P
Or if I do, I turn noise cancellation off.

8:48 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yep, same :P It's sometimes nice to stand outside with them on though because they kind of mute the world.

9:44 AM
Okay. One side-effect of wireless headphones is forgetting to leave them at the desk when going to bathroom... and losing connection halfway through, and only then realizing you were still wearing headphones.
"How do I make clear to the people that saw me that I'm not that anti-social'?

A J
@Tinkeringbell Means you forgot something else? ;)

@AJ Not really no?

A J
@Tinkeringbell It was a failed joke.

10:08 AM
@Tinkeringbell I actually sometimes do this if I'm in the communal kitchen. If I'm in my flow and I just need a drink it means 'Cant chat right now'.
I think it's funny that they can make phone calls via bluetooth so sometimes I just stand their wearing headphones and apparently talking to myself :P

@Tinkeringbell that's vaguely the point lol

10:45 AM
@AJ If you were thinking of bringing my phone: I use a bluetooth dongle on the laptop... and I'm not going to take that with me :P
@Henders I've got to try that :P Just set up a discord call with my brothers or something and then go downstairs to the kitchen XD

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, it's a bit hit and miss sometimes with my phone. Sometimes it enables phone mode, sometimes it doesn't.

I haven't tested the voice function on this one yet... I do hope it's okay :P
But I don't often use it anyway, not for serious stuff.

11:15 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, me neither and I think it's probably an issue with my phone rather than the headset itself.

Q: How can I invite my daughter's friends over without being odd?

user1261710My daughter is turning 4 years old in August. She has been going to preschool since September. Her class is pretty small, with only 6 kids. She's good friends with most of them. She'll be joining them again in the next school year. The school year is coming to an end and she's going to get bored...

Apparently, this site has a motto:
> Right now over on our site for Interpersonal Skills (motto: "We have to delete every other comment posted because y'all can't stop kibitzing and being jerks") source
Dunno what to think of it though. Can anyone come up with a better one?

Haha "kibitzing" is something my grandmother would say. I think it's a perfect description :P

@scohe001 For a site motto? Meh...

Maybe not a site motto--that should probably be sugared up. But as a blunt truth, it's definitely spot on
@Tinkeringbell Did you have something in mind?

@scohe001 Not really no... That's why I asked if someone knew something ;)

5:53 PM
interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/15746/… any thoughts on the OP's update here?
I see in a deleted "answer" that OP has "extreme anxiety and bipolar disorder" which is making me think twice about it.. probably that should at least be in the question.

@EmC I encouraged them to actually put the details in the question... but looking at the wall of text that latest edit added... :/

@Tinkeringbell yeah.. it's just that the sort of descriptions they give there set off alarm bells in my head that this is beyond normal amounts of worrying, which that deleted part seems to confirm. but then again, can we really judge that? :/

@EmC I am personally horrible at judging stuff like that...
Right now, I'd say just roll back the entire edit... but I'm not sure
It might do more harm than good

6:13 PM
@IPSCommentBot ... Just because I shared that quote on deleting comments doesn't mean that it's time to start living up to it? ...

I can see some flaws in the experiment: our version of the comment system rewording wasn't implemented as thoroughly as Area 51's version

@Tinkeringbell haha, it's just trying to help :P

For instance, "show [x] comments" was still used here, along with "add comment" for the submit button. On Area 51, the former was renamed "show [x] improvement suggestions" and the submit button was changed too. I brought this up to Shog in a meta comment and he refused to change it.

@gparyani So we're all supposed to go bother Shog now or something? :P
(I'm not even going to poke him with a very looong stick without a very good reason)

No, it's not him that I'm talking about. I tend to speak matter-of-fact-ly.
But yeah, on Super User he did use bad data to back up declining a request to raise the minimum rep to create tags. He showed that newer users create good tags, but his data excluded tags that were subsequently cleaned up.
And we cleaned up tags fast

user15026
6:25 PM
@Tinkeringbell I think you might mean bother or bug, bugger is...a very different thing in English, generally :)

This is really not the place to go on a 'Shog did this' tour... :/ Drawing out such a reaction wasn't the intention of my reply to you..

That said, what I was trying to say was, maybe these steps were the difference between seeing a big difference on Area 51 and not here

@Ash Eh eeewll.. thanks for educating me

user15026
@Tinkeringbell No problem :)

@Ash Please don't tell him :P

user15026
6:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell edit, what edit? ;)

Thanks :D
How you've been lately? Might be me, but you seemed a bit quieter than usual :)

@Tinkeringbell Out of curiosity, your school was Dutch-medium, right? I was just talking about this with rene in the Tavern.

user15026
@Tinkeringbell Been busy a lot more, which might be why :)

user15026
(It doesn't help my husband has gotten me back into playing WoW, that takes a good bunch of my time ;) )

@Ash Hahaha cool :) I bought a controller for my PC a few months back... and have been playing Rollercoaster since :/
@gparyani Dutch-medium?
How hard is WoW if you're really, really, really bad at everything that involves using two buttons on a controller at the same time/in rapid succession?

6:54 PM
Important note on commenting: meta.stackexchange.com/q/311737/369802 ;) I think everyone that's regularly in here is already doing a pretty good job at that though :)

user15026
@Tinkeringbell I am super bad at that and I make WoW work reasonably well. How good are you at using the keyboard to like...steer your character and then clicking buttons with the other hand? (I mean you can use keyboard shortcuts for most stuff, I just find the clicking easier0

@Ash Ehh... even more horrible? :P I guess I should just start trying. I managed to learn left-handed writing and crocheting (my dominant is right)... maybe I should see it as just another exercise.
I could play Lego Racers when I was younger, using a joystick. Never really managed that well with the keys

user15026
I know I struggle with a lot of hand-eye stuff but I did manage to make this work

user15026
It's not like super fast paced which helps

And I completely messed up the last time I tried to play Zelda on the WiiU (my brothers were delighted though).
@Ash Hmmm. It already sounds better than the kind of stuff my brothers are suggesting (Zelda can be really fast-paced, and they had me play some other way too fast game as well)

user15026
7:03 PM
It might be worth a shot. Last I checked, it's free until you reach a certain character level, so you can try it out without feeling like you wasted anything if it doesn't appeal to you

@Ash Nice. I'll go see if I can get that controller working soon then :)

@Tinkeringbell Meaning, all of your classes (math, science, history, etc.) were taught in the Dutch language?

@gparyani Not really. Higher level classes in French and English were given in those languages at my school
But the rest was Dutch, yes.

user15026
@Tinkeringbell I'm not sure how it handles controllers, to be honest, but I've never tried anything but keyboard and mouse.

@Ash Oh. Maybe I'll start with keyboard and mouse then ;)
If not, I have brothers to bother :D

user15026
7:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell laughs let me know how it goes! :)

@Ash If it goes as well as driving, I'll be offline for a week, crying in a corner. That should be enough info then :P

user15026
Oh no! :(

user15026
if the video game makes you cry, then it's not good.

I WILL manage to tame that stupid piece of sheet metal sometime.

user15026
(well unless it's like emotional tears from a good story)

user15026
7:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell I believe in you!

@Ash Hahaha now I need to start believing in me (and other road users :P)
@Ash It probably won't. Just frustrate me to the point that mom asks 'what's wrong' and I have to admit a PC is better at stuff than me :P

user15026
I know that feeling

user15026
(There are a lot of video games I can't play because they're too fastpaced or what have you)

user15026
(Which is kinda funny sometimes as a Arqade mod)

@Ash hahaha. I guess you're really good at other games though?

Q: How to keep passengers off the phone

BlackThornI am often the driver for friends and family whenever we travel, whether short or long distances. I am not against passengers making/answering phone calls while...

I wonder why "Introverted Meta Man." has a period at the end

It has been like that from the very beginning, as a mystery for generations to come.
"so that people will ask"

@Tinkeringbell fyi I just added in the paragraphs OP wrote in the non-answer... not sure what to do beyond that, but it seemed important enough to put in a place where all users can see and take into account

One day and it will be the site's first birthday

user15026
8:10 PM
@Tinkeringbell Enough that I keep myself entertained

@Ash you use games for that? What about SE? :P

@Tinkeringbell With regards to the current conversation in the Tavern, is it usually considered polite to tell other users that I'm clicking the "ignore this user" button on them? I'd prefer it if others did it to me, but my preferences are in some cases polar opposites from others'.

@gparyani Think of it this way. If I were standing in front of you with my fingers in my ears screaming 'I don't hear you'... would that be polite?
Also, this room really isn't the place to discuss antics from other rooms....

user15026
@Tinkeringbell Sometimes SE can be too much, so I need as break

Just a general question. TBH I really don't wish to start a big discussion about it here.

user15026
8:13 PM
@gparyani In general, don't bring your issues from other SE stuff here

@gparyani Well :) I hope that example answered it then :)
@Ash Yeah, you're right. Does work count as a break? :P

user15026
Some days :P

@Tinkeringbell But here in chat I can't pick up implicit signals, which I have no issue doing in real life.

@Ash My work is finally starting to get a bit more fun... guys are thawing a little. They were really reserved the first few days... To the point I thought I might have to ask an IPS question about it :P

user15026
I'm glad they're relaxing!

8:17 PM
@Ash Yep, me too. It's not much fun having to feel like walking on eggshells all the time, but luckily they do have a sense of humor ;)

Anyhow, Arduino is fun. You should pick up your own board and kit, and build things with it.

user15026

@Catija Well, my neurotypical "emulator" is currently in beta, and does have some bugs, but it's much more stable than the early alpha builds. Unfortunately, it suffers from a critical bug where it sometimes crashes in areas of interests (such as this site); I'm currently trying to fix it.
