@LinuxBlanket The remarks are not from a single person; it could vary from anyone at the workplace to my roommates and their parents/partners. It is a little less at the workplace because I brush them off saying 'We'll talk about it later' and keep my rapport professional. But, with roommates, it is getting sick. And it is not always the same set of roommates, people come and leave or I would be changing apartments. I want to brush off the comments as silly ones or depending on the situation might want to have a friendly chat with them minus these sarcasm, if at all possible. — Sandy C 6 secs ago

@Cashbee Ugh... that's not... I mean, Catija said no?

I mean shog clearly didn't intend people to copypaste his message verbatim :p

@Tinkeringbell I find it incredibly funny but it isn't really apt to do it. I flagged it

@Cashbee ;) I mean, to me, posted under an actual answer, it reads like you just met someone that's binging and browsing ;)

> binging and browsing
is that the IT version of drinking and driving?
> Don't bing and browse guys, you will land in places where you did not want to land at all.

Never heard that one before? I mean, yeah, that's basically what it is :P

@Tinkeringbell lol no. you didnt just make that up?

@Cashbee Nope, I've had people mention that to me online ;)
Maybe they made it up though :P

googling (heh) it shows no positive results

Let's make it show up on google then :P

@Tinkeringbell new custom close reason? AWESOME!

@Cashbee Yeah, now use it :P

@BlackThorn - I fully agree with all you said about business cards in Japan... except, unless you are Japanese don't bow - you will never get it right; you are not expected to be able to get it right & to not do it is better than getting it wrong. we have many old closed questions (interpersonal.stackexchange.com/…). Should I start recommend deletions for them, or are 'we' okay with letting them stay undeleted?

@Cashbee You could start with voting to delete the lowest scoring ones. But you need a few others to chime in as well ;)

Technically every question that gets closed and has no perspective of being reopened should be deleted.

@Tinkeringbell I know I need others, but I thought once i started, the questions in question (lel) would come up in review queue?

@Cashbee Not in a queue, but it will show up in the moderation tools you get at 2k rep here :)

@Tinkeringbell ah. so I would just generate more work for you guys? I don't want to be a burden

8:59 AM
@Cashbee No, every 2k+ reputation user has that dashboard here, so technically the community can handle that themselves :)

*4k

I too think it's 4k, then you are a trusted user
where the whole deletion permissions kick in
anyway, I'll start VTD'ing the lowest scoring ones, beginning with the oldest

2k for the tools tab, where you can already vote to delete certain things. 4k expands on that.

@Tinkeringbell OK makes sense, since I too can VTD with < 3k

On a side note: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/5759/1599 I've finally gotten around to editing that one ;)

9:01 AM
Yeah, you can't VTD answers without 4k, which is what I was thinking of

@Mithrandir yes I can

oh, answers. no i can't

@Cashbee I'm pretty sure you can 'recommend deletion' in the queue, but not vote to delete ;)

but i can VTD questions
@Tinkeringbell ooh right that is a difference

9:02 AM
right. i always forget those two are separate.

I liked that question @Tinkeringbell, I can't immediately see what's wrong with it either, nor what used to be wrong with it...can anyone shed a little light on it?

@Cronax It initially focused very much on making my mom do something, which is off-topic on IPS: questions should focus on what I want to do/achieve

although the alert box says "vote to delete this question? (4 votes remaining)

Editing this one was especially tricky since it already had some answers.

9:05 AM
I see

@Cashbee ? You only have 4 delete votes left? That's okay, everyone gets that box I think

I've voted to reopen, at the very least I think the current version is good enough to be let back into the wild :D

no its not me that has 4 votes left. its the Q that need 4 more vtd to be deleted

Q: How to say "no"?

Zoltán SchmidtI have a very hard time bringing up themes that may cause conflicts or even very minor hurt, e.g. asking someone for not going on with talking, and let me focus on my current tasks. More often than not, I use "too harsh" wording in such situations. How can I avoid it?

@Cashbee in my experience the message tells you how many close-votes you have left without giving any information about the number of close-votes that others have cast

@Cashbee I really think that 4 is the number of votes you have left, not the number of votes still needed. Lemme look

Tink is correct

that's my experience from the Workplace, where I have 6k+ rep

ok thx for clarifications

9:09 AM
@Cashbee Here's the math, if you're interested: meta.stackexchange.com/a/51071/369802
So, in this case, 8+9 =17, so it still requires only the three base votes

@Tinkeringbell ofc I'm interested 😉 thx

Q: Could mods stop deleting the comments?

DžurisCan we stop this genocide? Removing comments does not seem to stop people from using comments the same way next time, it only ruins what has been posted in the comments. I see the removal only as a detriment. Comments under the question are very often the most useful part. When looking at a ques...

12:09 PM
interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/3000/8077 did I mix up "is" with "should" as a comment says?
I'm a bit confused

@Cashbee I don't think so? To me, it almost seems like they're wanting you to change 'the question body is the most important' to 'should be the most important' which would leave a lot more room for rules lawyering...

@Tinkeringbell that was my impression too.

they are implying that sometimes the most useful information is actually in the comments meaning they are at that time more important than the question itself

but wasnt sure since its not my first langauge

which is nonsensical, as I've stated in my answer any case where the most useful information is in the comments should by definition be a temporary situation
so while they are technically correct, your wording is the rule and therefore factually correct
now we all know technically correct is the best kind of correct, but still ;)

I feel this user (interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/14842) is taking a decision based on the expected judgment/reaction of other people, rather than their own real feelings. Is it ok to challenge that in a comment or an answer?

I think you could do that constructively, for instance by framing it as if you're looking for 'the real question'

@Federico In the context of an answer sure

I have done so in the past

Is frame challenge ish but appropriate imo

@Federico generally, we shouldn't judge the decisions querents made. In this case, if you tread carefully, challenging that could be okay

12:46 PM
I dunno, I have no clue where this person is from, but it really may be impossible for them to be together (arranged marriages or something?)... then an answer saying 'do what you like' might cause more trouble than do good?

ok, I'll attempt an answer. I'll be available for feedback

just don't say that his decision is wrong or that he shouldn't listen to his parents

an example text would be:
You're asking X but from the context and your comments it seems like you're actually trying to achieve Y. If that's true, could you edit the question to reflect this?"
not sure an answer is the right thing to do in this case

@Tinkeringbell In that case a valid course of action could be to damn the consequences and cut their parents out of their lives though

@Cronax yeah, I too think that asking in a comment whether he really wants to base this decision on his parents reaction is better than in an answer

12:48 PM
Although that'd probably be out of scope for this

@user5389107 but it is OP's decision to listen to his parents. Otherwise, this would be a "should I listen to my parents?" question
I wouldn't decide the same way as OP did, but we are not here to judge

Sid
@Cashbee Those have become off-topic, no?

@Sid have always been, yes (I think)
currently they are.

@Sid those questions are 'make this choice for me' questions, which are unacceptable everywhere in the network afaik

Sid
Is,"How to make an excuse for something" on-topic?

1:01 PM
depends on the specificity, I guess

I think so? Apologizing effectively is definitely a skill, but depends on what 'How' means here, what are you struggling with?

it can be reframed as "I want to achieve goal X by doing Y" which seems on-topic to me

Sid
(I kinda want a sandbox for this SE, though)

it's a beta SE, this is the sandbox :D

answer is up

Sid
1:04 PM
@Tinkeringbell Like, making up a real excuse to avoid doing something?

I can answer feedback for about 20 min, then I probably have a meeting

@Sid Oh that's different I guess... 'making up' usually means your excuse won't be real ;) Something that's made up is fake :P
@Federico I'd switch the order: real answer first, questions last...

@Tinkeringbell ok, doing that

@Federico I'd also make your sourcing explicit. If it's personal experience, mention that
doesn't invalidate it, but it's important to note what the basis for your answer is

Sid
@Tinkeringbell No. Like, I have to do something on that day, but I am getting texts to attend a Reunion party..

1:08 PM
@Sid Ah :) So you want to attend the Reunion party and excuse yourself from what you've already planned? That sounds like a good question ;)

Sid
So, how do I express effectively my disappointment at not attending it?

@Cronax I thought I mentioned that my sourcing are my experiences and my acquaintances' ones. Where do you think it is missing?

Sid
@Tinkeringbell Reverse of that, actually. :P

Wait, you're not going to the Reunion party... that's also okay ;)
Just make sure your question conveys why 'I'm so sorry, but I already have plans that I can't cancel' isn't an option ;)

@Federico "hope dies last" / "hope springs eternal" are very well known english sayings too ;)

1:10 PM
@Federico I can't find any specific mention of it anywhere in your answer, perhaps you accidentally removed it somewhere?

Sid
@Tinkeringbell You mean, I have to convey specifically what I am going to do that day?

@Sid No, but if you're asking about how to excuse yourself to people making plans because you have something else to do, it would be nice to know why 'I'm so sorry, but I already have something planned' or something like it isn't going to work/hasn't crossed your mind yet ;)

@Cronax maybe I have different way of understanding what you mean. "I have done it for sure" "I know I would need that" "I have occasionally needed to go that far" "an approach that worked for a few of my acquaintances" ?
@Cashbee thanks, added :)

@Federico "I have done it for sure in similar situations" would be better. We arrived at a nitpicking level now :D

@Federico Are we both talking about interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/14842/…?

1:14 PM
@Cronax yep
@Cashbee :D ok

okay, I've found what you're talking about, it may not have been as explicit as I'd like but it's definitely in there so it's all good

@Federico Be clear, no fuzzyness, no vagueness: tell her clearly that you like spending time with her, but only as friends, nothing more. You say: - In my opinion (and this is an opinion only! don't change your answer if you don't agree!) I would somehow open up a little bit more and say that I really like her too, but... Because saying that "I like you only as a frined, nothing more" is a lie IMO, which I wouldn't do to friends.

at this point it's a difference of 'writing style'

Again keep in mind that this is my opinion

if you want I can add a line at the top where I say "all that follows comes from personal experience and/or friends' ones"

1:18 PM
@Federico nah it's fine. That sentence would only make it worse somehow
@Federico unless you specify more clearly what you went through this is not needed

@Cashbee I was thinking that in the short days after the decision to be more strict about requiring sourcing, it's good for those who visit this chat to be 'more Roman than the pope' as we say in Dutch, in other words to give very explicit good examples
I agree that in this case it's not really necessary

@Cronax yes, but fed does mention that he went through similar situations several times ;)

@Cashbee sorry, can't fully agree. She would still hope that that "I like you" would sooner or later change in something more. I have done it for years and I could not move on. A clear cut is more helpful (and the friendship is not necessarily tarnished afterwards, I am still friend with a woman that I liked in university and she stopped talking to me for months to make me understand)

I too think that setting a good example here (and on main) is a good idea

@Cronax I am roman, the pope is not :D

1:22 PM
@Federico yes I already regret saying that, I didn't think it through

@Cashbee no problem :)

@Federico also, here take a medal. Because some stranger on the internet just admitted to you that he was wrong :D

@Federico haha in your case it's literally true that you're more roman than the pope yeah

XD TIL: I am a medal factory :D (I [think I] have no problems in admitting I am wrong, even if I could take some convincing)

although in the case of the saying, it's not really roman as in Roman Empire but roman as in roman catholic church

1:25 PM

though for all I know you're also more devout than the pope :D

@Cronax 'roomser dan de paus' translates very boringly as 'more catholic than the pope' :P

@Cronax I'm as atheist as they can come :D
ok. sorry now, but gtg. If there is more feedback I will take care of it later after the meetings.

Good luck!

@Federico was fun, hope to see you again here sometime

1:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah I was going off of google translate, in hindsight that's not the most reliable way to go for sayings and expressions I don't know an analogue for

@Tinkeringbell @Cronax I just read a book from Hendrik Groen, a senior from netherlands who wrote a diary for a year. Do you know that book?

@Cashbee You've got to be kidding, how do you even dare ask! That thing was so hyped, you could only miss it by living under a rock the last years :P

It rings a bell vaguely, but I'm not much of a non-fiction reader
<-- has apparently been living under a rock the last years

@Tinkeringbell haha

:D

1:29 PM
@Cronax They made it into a tv series, with Andre van Duin
They also made a theater play out of it :P

@Tinkeringbell 😒 I don't know if I want to watch that

@Cashbee It was cool, well done :)

I don't watch TV and I don't go to plays either XD

but i can understand the hype, I think its an amazing book

@Cashbee Yeah, I still have to read it though :P I don't read much Dutch literature.

1:31 PM
I'm kinda like the stereotypical nerd in Anime shows except I don't think 2D girls are better :P

@Cronax I only know Death Note and One Punch Man (love those). I am still undecided if I should start a lifelong binge-watch of naruto....
should I?

Naruto is decent, but not really up to that standard, especially since it has a LOT of filler, most of which is terrible
I'd suggest reading the manga instead if you're interested in it

@Cronax good to know, thx

if you're looking for reccommendations on anime to try, I could probably make a suggestion if you tell me your favorite 'regular' tv show or movie

@Cronax ok let me think a minute

Sid
1:35 PM
I kinda liked Code Geass more than I liked Death Note though..

yeah I thought the second half of Death Note was terrible, after the spoiler event happens

"regular" tv shows that I like: Westworld, Rick and Morty, Futurama, Cosmos, Silicon Valley. Those are the ones that come to mind after 1 minute :D

so sci-fi stuff with humour?

oh you also asked for movies.. : Austin Powers, Monty Python, argh I will never be able to write them all down there are so many awesome movies
@Cronax humor yes, sci-fi sure, but I also love when the plot is just awesome (like the chess-like mindgames in deathnote)
lol who starred my internet medal xD

@Cashbee the aforementioned Code Geass might actually be a decent fit, the plot revolves around someone who's only able to survive because he constantly out-planning and out-strategising everyone else

@SQB Personally I think that being Dutch and growing up in the Dutch culture means that I often feel that interpersonal situations are straightforward with a clear answer, that's why I got interested in this stack, because I felt I could help others see things as clearly

@Cronax Careful with that though! What's common here may be very rude somewhere else ;)

+1 If someone personally gives you a business card, it may be worth it for the OP to just keep collecting the business cards. It cannot be stressed enough, you never know when you need to make contact with someone in the future where you may not want your current employer involved like looking for a new job, needing their services or help in some way, or something. I would only throw a card away if my interaction was very negative with the person for some reason. Even then I always take the card, bring it home, and wait about a few weeks, just in case, before throwing it away. — Fixed Point 6 secs ago

@Catija Hmmm...

5:18 PM
I'm not sure that won't invalidate any answers there already :/

If someone answers an off topic question, getting their answer invalidated when it is brought on topic is a risk they take
The alternatives here are either closure and eventual deletion or bringing it on topic and making a couple answers less relevant

@Catija I'm still not 100% confident I can just go rephrasing it like you suggested, because in combination with the examples mentioned in the question 'handle' seems too broad to me to mean what you've just suggested. I've left a comment, I hope I do get some clarification to work with...

The comments that are already there specifically say that they're trying to figure out what to do in the future. We're allowed to make edits that will "rescue" a question if we think the question is a bad fit for the site scope.

@ExtrovertedMainMan Looks like this might be a good candidate for your new close reason, @Tinkeringbell

And from a quick read of the two existing answers, I don't think that either will be invalidated.

6:14 PM
@Catija Yeah, but would that mean in preparation of the future road trip, or when something like that occurs again?

@Tinkeringbell Does it matter?

To me, it does.

I don't see why it does.
You're expecting the OP to know the answer before asking it... If you're expecting them to decide when to talk about it with their friends... and either is an option.
Hopefully, they talk about it before the trip even starts... if not, they should absolutely talk about it when it happens before any decisions to rent a car are made... either is a perfectly acceptable option.

@Catija I'm expecting that people will react a lot differently when planning stuff then when they think they already known (and have budgeted) the costs of a trip.
I would, at the very least.
If there's a possibility that a trip will cost me more than what I've got to spare for it, I can't go on the trip.
If I'm already on the trip, and I don't have the money to spare but someone suddenly expects me to pay for something extra... I'd be pissed

And why should one person have to bear that entire cost?
You don't get to force that on them either.
If you don't want to pay, go home.

6:21 PM
@Catija No, so I'm wondering when this discussion is going to be had, because if I'm warned beforehand, I'd not have wasted my time on coming in the first place

All of that is part of the answer, though... us arguing about it in here is irrelevant...
The point is, answers can suggest either...

But then the question would be when to talk about this, not how to handle the situation

OK?

Your suggestion was to ask how to talk about it, when planning a trip, so that a plan would be in place when something like that happens again. And I'm not seeing the jump from 'handle' to that...

Q: How do I make anonymous therapists respond to my queries?

JETMI am attempting to find a psychologcal therapist. I am using a directory on a website. The directions for contacting say to ask what you want in less than 200 words. The direct email addresses are unlisted. My queries are unanswered. How do I make them respond? Attempted email bodies include: ...

weird that they don't have phone numbers....

8:25 PM
This really doesn't sound like me.
But does anyone have any methods for convincing kids that internet safety is important?
Since some of the responses there don't seem to get it.

On the one hand I agree, on the other hand what do you expect to happen to you if random people on the internet know who you are in real life?

Kids make vulnerable targets.

That's true independent whether random people on the internet figure out who they are
And yes, I'm exagerating a bit to the other side here, but if you teach your kids not to post things online that they wouldn't show to their grandma than I don't really see any more danger than what they're already in anyway

8:41 PM
They'd probably tell their grandma where they go to school, though...

that's my point. I don't see a direct problem with letting people know who you are and where you live. There might be a problem if you also post that you're going on vakation so a burglar has a week to prepare breaking into your house ...

If you tell someone that you go to school at X school... that makes it much easier for them to find you ... for whatever reason they may want to find you.

Well yes, but I don't see any reason someone would want to find a specific kid in that way

... and, to be clear, that site that Mith is on doesn't even let users set their own usernames... so they're extremely protective about what sort of info the kids who use the site share.

@Imus Then you're obviously not nefarious enough. More seriously, there are reasons people would want to find kids.

If every single post has a header that reads "Please remember not to share information that can reveal personal information..." That's probably a big sign that they take it as a huge issue if you do.

Here's one article. There are others.
@Catija eh, no, that's the topic title
But you see this whenever you go to post:

HAHA. Ok.

Q: How to overcome my feelings for someone at work

VerverIt's been almost a year ago that my coworker started showing affection to me (not verbally though). I decided to be rational and without hurting his feeling tried to let him know that he shouldn't pay much attention to me or watch me all the time. And he's acting as if he's turned off. But I have...

I'll think about what exactly makes it dangerous to tell personal information. I still believe the dangers are overrated (although I fully agree that there is a problem with children meeting up with unknown people which has other solutions required than not providing personal information publicly). I'm probably too optimistic about most things :)
Off to bed now, got to get up in about 7 hours for work again tomorow.

@Imus Personally identifiable information can be used for various and sundry designs.

Q: How can I amicably end a friendship with a needy friend?

cheshireOver the last few months I have become closer with a friend from class. She seems to have really latched onto me and considers me a close friend of hers. I'm an introvert and don't make strong bonds easily; I tend to be selective of the people I consider friends. She's an extrovert and is alway...

@Imus see here. People will use any line they can get on a child and it's horrific and sickening. I grew up in an age where we were told to put NOTHING on the internet (and were scolded when we posted pictures of ourselves on Facebook) so maybe I'm a little jaded, but I'm fully onboard with Mith on this one.

Q: Does this site suffer from low representation from older people? And if so, what to do?

ab2After an initial burst of enthusiasm, I became only a sporadic visitor to this site. Part of the reason is that most of the questions seem (from my totally unscientific survey) to be from very young to youngish people -- teens, 20s, 30s. I am sure their problems are serious and important, and v...

@Mithrandir it sounds like they're using arguments similar to people who use "password123" as their bank password. "Yea it's not the BEST idea, but who's going to pick out MY account to brute-force of all the accounts? Why would anyone care about little old me from everyone else with even worse passwords?" Anonymity is not a good security policy (and that seems to be what they're relying on--"it's public info anyway, anyone could find it if they really wanted to...")
