Comments aren't for discussing votes.

you got a downvote because someone thought your answer was not useful - that's as much as anyone can tell you apart from the person who cast the vote, who is not obliged to out themselves

Anything else you want to tell me before I hid in seclusion?

@Cascabel @Cascabel How is that fine, but an offhand comment about people wanting to be offended is cause to heap abuse upon someone?

@RichardU What?
Sorry, "people wanting to be offended" seemed odd and out of place given that conversation... I'm guessing that I missed a previous conversation.

@apaul yes, and it was a doozy. Suffice it to say, that despite our disagreements, I respect the fact that you say it, and you cannot, and should not be held responsible for the rudeness of others who comment on your posts

Folks seem to like discussing votes in the comments.

Well, as long as it's votes... :P

7:44 AM
I'm lacking the concentration to figure out if that post really deserves a downvote or not... It seems the language may need some moderating though...

BTW, I've re-enabled the "possible-aic" for "you need to", with the provision that the comment doesn't have a question mark.

Was that really necessary? :P Let's see how many noise it causes. From the transcript, it looks like you've had some fun experimenting last night?

Yeah, experiments are fun ;)
Look. The more comments deleted by users, the less work the mods have to do, which means that they'll be less overworked and stressed.
I'm not sure what exactly is going to happen with the issue of the moderators being overworked, but in the meantime we can do what we can to alleviate the problem to the extent of our capabilities.

@Mithrandir I know. But with some threads I don't even know where to begin... :/ I just pick a chatty one, and custom flag the entire thread for a thorough check up

As a mod, I prefer individual flags because it means that those were pointed out specifically, but some mods don't agree with that :)

7:51 AM
@Mithrandir I know for a fact that I was always told not to flag the entire thread :P I think though that if there's stuff that can go, and stuff to stay, single flags are preferred. But I can't mindread :P

Which reminds me... hey @Henders, want to take a stab at the original purpose of Charcoal? ;)
(since you're lurking and we can really use more people flagging comments)

Having something automatically flag comments? :/

No, not automatically.

So we'd have another comment bot?

There's only one project I know of that automatically flags comments and it's fine-tuned to SO.
@Tinkeringbell original Charcoal didn't have a bot, AFAIK, they just flagged comments by hand

> A king wants to go out. He comes at the end of the fort that has two door with two buttons. The thing is those buttons work opposite. For eg., if you push button-1, the king will come out from door-2 and vice versa. If you press both at once, you won't know which door that king will come out or whether he will be divided into two pieces.

a.) that doesn't sounds like a riddle b.) why does that need to rhyme?

A J
a.) why ? b.)I don't know. just make it look good.
I want to know the name of that king.
I think I told you about a riddle a stranger asked me a few weeks ago.

> A king wants to go outside. He comes to the end of the fort. There are two doors there, and two buttons. These buttons do opposite things - if you push button 1, the king will come out of door 2 and vice versa. If you press both at once, you don't know which door the king will come out (or whether he will be divided into two pieces).

What is the king's name?

> A king wants to go outside. He comes to the end of the fort. There are two doors there, and two buttons. These buttons do opposite things - if you push button 1, the king will come out of door 2 and vice versa. If you press both at once, you don't know which door the king will come out (or whether he will be divided into two pieces).

What is the king's name?
Take a look at this.

@AJ Nope, not at all. But it can read nicer if it rhymes.
Mith is right though, that's not a by the PSE definition :-)

A J
@Randal'Thor So, what would we call it?
The answer is an object (TBH, I don't know the answer) and it gives indirect clues about it.

@AJ Actually, I suppose it could be a riddle - if the whole king/fort/doors/buttons situation is a metaphor for something else.
At first I was thinking it sounded like a puzzle.

A J
@Randal'Thor yes, exactly.

@AJ I stand sit corrected then :-)
Another thing that could work is , if you don't want to make clear exactly what type of puzzle it is.

@AJ Ah, okay, that wasn't clear.

A J
:)

Anyway, @AJ, if that thing is a riddle and you don't know the answer, I wouldn't mess with the wording too much.

A J
@Randal'Thor So, can it be rhymed, or should I post it as is? :)

You never know which particular choice of phrasing could be important.
Especially if there's wordplay involved as well as metaphor in the solution.

A J
12:14 PM
I provided the riddle as it was asked.

And making something rhyme usually involves some paraphrasing.
So I'd say post it as-is and forget about the rhyming.

A J
should I state that I don't know the answer?

YES.
Definitely.
:-)
People will be annoyed if they spend time trying to solve it and then find out that you can't even provide hints or the solution yourself.

A J
One last thing. The title.

Titles on PSE are pretty free-style.
You could make it something descriptive like "A king in a fort with two buttons".
Or something more imaginative.
But imaginative titles often contain clues, so if you don't know the solution, best to stick with a basic title.

A J
12:17 PM
OK. Thanks. :)
I am on my way to post it.

No problem :-) Always happy to help new riddlers.

My flag here was disputed - How to deal with noisy snorers in hostel/dorm?. Anyone want to raise another flag on it? (Also note that the more flags a post has the more Looks Okay reviews it needs to dispute the flag.)

A J
@ArwenUndómiel I should have added some commentary to that effect. A lot of flagged responses talk about the snoring problem but not how to deal with it. This solution allows the snorer to keep sleeping and also allows OP to get a good night's sleep as well. Snorers can't control that activity and generally know that they do; this makes an allowance for that and still enables OP to sleep. I submit that waking the snorer up to deal with something they can't control isn't a good interpersonal skill. — baldPrussian 3 mins ago

1:02 PM
@Mithrandir That's mean :P You're basically suggesting everyone that votes to delete to raise their own flag? :D

@Tinkeringbell yes

Lol

I've got 90 flags pending now.

... :sigh:

O.o

...I lied, it's 92 now.

@Catija sorry, not sorry

... You know... it'd be really nice if you could... I don't know... stop.

You know we're overwhelmed...
Do you really need to do this now?
I appreciate your interest in helping but we need a different kind of help right now.

3:28 PM
@Catija I'm not even going through tons of old stuff now... I was going through the front page and some links. And yeah, I can take a break.

3:39 PM
Are all of your pending flags mod flags?

No. Most of them are normal comment flags, and some VLQ/NaA flags.
As of right now, 8 pending post flags and 68 pending comment flags (they handled some in the interim).

All of them show up in the mod queue, and can only be handled by mods (although enough flags from the community can of course delete a comment).
And yes, I got through maybe six just now.

Sounds like the rest of the community needs to step up our comment flagging so the mods have less work to do

It would also be nice if people would just not make so many irrelevant comments in the first place. . .

@Rainbacon That only works if you're all agreeing and flagging the same things enough times to delete them. Otherwise you just add even more to the flag queue.

3:44 PM
...I could take put some links in another room if anyone want to attempt to get enough flags to nuke the ones I have pending flags on.

It takes at least three community members to delete a comment that has no upvotes; I think (I think) that more upvotes on a comment means more flags are needed to delete it.

@HDE226868 3 upvotes = 1 one more flag IIRC

@HDE226868 Yeah, thats why i choose a custom mod flag for one comment because it had 30+ votes

Either is fine... 30+ upvotes doesn't affect whether we delete it. If it's unnecessary, we'll remove it.

@Rainbacon I'm putting some links here, but I don't have much time at the moment.

3:50 PM
@Catija I mostly wasn't aware that the other flags also got to you in the same queue. Also there was a long chain and I figured it would be easier to send one flag about all of them
@Mithrandir you have your own chat room?

@Rainbacon If you use the default flag, it will stack on top of existing ones. Using a custom flag gives us two separate flags to handle on the same thing.

@Rainbacon indeed

:o I wasn't aware. I'll keep that in mind in the future

Though, handling one (by deleting the comment) handles both...

4:18 PM
@Catija Anything specific we can help with?
Okay, both of those comments above could use some community flags!

I'll stop by them when I finish with the LQP

I'll take first posts then :P

4:40 PM
is annoyed at LQP queue

@Mithrandir breathe in.... breathe out...
Maybe there's just been too much put in there today?

I don't know.
I don't have the energy to go to war over these.

Then don't... :)
I think one thing that confuses people is the 'answers need to address the IPS part'

@Mithrandir I skipped one because I was on the fence and recommended deletion on the other

Apparently questions need votes too :P

4:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell I've noticed a lot of non IPS answers lately, but I haven't figured out how to go about a "make this about IPS" crusade yet
