NVZ
7:00 PM
We'll see how it goes, for a day or so. Test run.

@Mithrandir What's the regex testing for, specifically... the "not an answer but" sort of stuff?

NVZ
Mith is a comment hunter. No comment can escape his grip. ;)

@Catija Yes, that's one thing it's detecting
It's also looking for 'joined just to upvote', 'you should try', etc

How about "Celia" the "Chatty Comment Catcher"?

NVZ
Not bad.

7:07 PM
@Catija I like that one :)

"The Peanut Gallery"

NVZ
Ava?

Also, I just wrote some !!/help text, if anyone forgets the commands.

!!/help

Note: If <botname> is the only argument, it can be ommitted and the command will be seen by all bots. If <botname> is "*" all bots will repond as though they've been mentioned.

!!/on <botname> - Turns on the bot (if it isn't already on)
!!/off <botname> - Turns off the bot. When the bot is off, it will only respond to !!/on.
!!/notify <botname> <type> <on/off> - Turns notifications on or off. Currently there are two types: "regex", and "magic"
!!/alive <botname> - It'll tell you if it's alive
!!/reports <botname> - It'll tell you what the current reporting settings are for the current room

NVZ
7:09 PM
"all bots will respond" ... somehow that scares me.

(always read the manual first!)

@NVZ In the control room there's one running on meta too.

NVZ
and suddenly everyone heads over to the control room...
...

It's kinda spammy over there though -- in that room, every single comment on main or meta gets posted.

Q: How long to wait after death of significant others parent to break up with them?

SteveEver since this happened, things have been very tense between me and my girlfriend. I have returned to our apartment 7 days a week, giving up staying second apartment and it's only made things worse than before because I don't believe she trusts me at all and our relationship has seemed to lose...

#9739 Tinkeringbell (12509 rep) | Q: How long to wait after death of significant others parent to break up with them? (score: 0) | posted 11 minutes ago by Steve (893 rep)
Matched regex(es) ["you\\W(really)?(need\\Wto|should)"]

Okay, so how do I indicate a false positive? :P

@Tinkeringbell is fired ;-)

You know, this might become my new challenge... writing comments that make the bot go nuts! :P

@Tinkeringbell Tell @Mithrandir to write better regex :)

7:33 PM
@thesecretmaster I will! @Mithrandir!!!!! you need to fix the regex :P
Or I'll turn it off :P

It was supposed to post the actual comment too. It'll post the comment along with the metadata next time.

@Mithrandir Is there a way to see the existing regex rules?

Oh...
That didn't give much info :P

7:37 PM
Yeah. I don't have a list regex command, but I can pull them out of the DB. Gimme a sec.

@Tinkeringbell :(

!!/regexes

q: you\W(really)?(need\Wto|should)
q: if\Wi\Wwh?ere\W(in\Wyou('re|r)|you|u)
a: joined\W(th(e|is)\Wsite|IPS(\.SE)?|Interpersonal\WSkills(\WStack\W?Exchange)?)?(‌‌\W?just)?\W?too?\W(up)?vote
q: joined\W(th(e|is)\Wsite|IPS(\.SE)?|Interpersonal\WSkills(\WStack\W?Exchange)?)?(‌‌‌\W?just)?\W?too?\W(up)?vote
q: an?\W?answer\W?\Wbut
q: respond
q: <redacted>
a: <redacted>

"q" means it applies to comments on questions and "a" means comments on answers.

(the redacted ones are probably my offensive regex)

7:43 PM
Yep
I just manually edited that message, so if anyone else runs that command, it won't be removed.

@Tinkeringbell You could help if you want ;)

@Mithrandir I'm a bit tied up at the moment ;)

Have you been kidnapped?

@Mithrandir No, I got tangled in the yarn...

@Tinkeringbell In capitalist Netherlands, yarn knits you?

7:55 PM
@TheTinyMan Sort-of I guess :P
Wish it was knitted, that would make for easy untangling...
Right now, it's in a state called yarn-barf.

@thes Did you see my ping in the TL?

Oh, yes, I just forgot to answer.

8:39 PM
@Samuel that's the reason why I mention in my answer that looking at your phone briefly isn't really that rude. I could pitch up at a date with a book and read instead and it would still be rude. The rudeness is not the phone, it's ignoring your date. — Stacey 1 min ago

So I've seen this term bandied about today, what's a 'magic comment?'
Is it a comment submitted psychically instead of with a computer? :o

This is the magic comment:
Please don’t write answers in comments. It bypasses our quality measures by not having voting (both up and down) available on comments, as well as having other problems detailed on meta. Comments are for clarifying and improving the question; please don’t use them for other purposes. — Arwen Undómiel Jan 25 at 9:18

Q: New friend put us in awkward position

LadybuggzA new friend has lead a rough life, an ex drug user that still seems to have street ties that come with way too much drama for us. She put us (my hubby & I) in an uncomfortable position last week by yelling and threatening some guy when we stopped at a gas station. We had no idea what was going...

Ah, so the detection just lets us know when someone has felt the need to say that?

No, the detection picks up all comments posted after the "please don't write answers in comments" comment was left.

8:43 PM
@Mithrandir Ahhhh, gotcha, okay

@Mithrandir It might be a good idea to add a description such as "comment after AIC warning" to the bot.

@NVZ I was not talking about English Student, that's why I was surprised. (btw., I'm sure he is male). I was talking about the bot.
@Mithrandir @Catija Scroll up a bit (I don't want to link to it) like 2 hours ago, where thesecretmaster posted the github link. I just wonder if someone's actual name was revealed.

Yeah, it's okay - he links to his github from his profile as well.

@IPSCommentBot Hi! How's your first day going? A lot of work?
Okay, I thought better safe than sorry

The bot isn't very talkative :P

8:52 PM
@AnneDaunted They link to that github account from their profile. There's no requirement that you use a handle instead of your actual name.

@Mithrandir But there's a github so we can fix that! :-D
When we're done he'll have, himself, devised a better alternative to the Turing Test!

!!/test You should really do something like this

@Mithrandir I will need all my IPS then. I love challenges

!!/test ips q You should really do something like this
okay, no testing in here, that's restricted to the control room

@IPSCommentBot I understand that you still need some time. Everything is new and overwhelming at the beginning. I know that feeling just too well. But be assured that I'm always there for you if you have questions
We need a chatbot or rather artificial conversational entity (what an awesome username that would have been). I like the idea of the IPS crowd, who's advising people on how to deal with other human beings, spending their time on talking to a computer program.

9:05 PM
@Stacey I'm saying rudeness is culturally based. It's fine if the OP finds a behavior rude, I'm just saying they need to realize that finding it rude doesn't mean it's universally rude. This includes your book example. My wife and I bring books on our dates with each other. When people assume their feelings are shared by everyone their reaction will often be less considerate because they assume the person offending them is doing it intentionally. — Samuel 16 secs ago

@AnneDaunted @Pseudohuman used to be in here

an actual bot?

yep
Also seems to be down, have to ping @JennaSloan to get it back up again ;)

@AnneDaunted we had pseudohuman

:-)
everyone knows pseudohuman except for me
what was chatting with it like?

9:08 PM
It randomly gave you some info about random songs and said "I don't understand" a lot :P

Wait, that's me!

@AnneDaunted ... this explains a lot.

@TheTinyMan I don't understand

I think the @AnneDaunted bot needs to be taken offline for maintenance...I'll call a guy. :-P

Sorry for digressing but I finally learned what smartphones are useful for

"and clearly the only thing kids use cell phones for are to take crotch pics and get raped anyway."

That was some pretty hilarious sarcasm in context
I have definitely known "old people"™ who've seemed to hold that conclusion :-p

I use my phone to check for new flags mostly, actually :p

9:15 PM
There was not enough time to implement sarcasm into my source code

@AnneDaunted Gosh-darned stretch goals...we never seem to be able to work on them no matter how important they seem! D:

I'm off now
for maintenance
put your phones away!

Discuss this with the person responsible for what you spend your time on and ask if and what you should do when asked. It might be as simple as having to have approval from your manager before asking you. — Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen 2 mins ago

Q: How can we encourage more discussion when voting to close, or why is it not happening already?

Jess K.I feel like I've become more aware of a trend, in that it seems that when a question ends up in the review queue, it tends to snowball into getting closed regardless of what editing efforts are made to salvage the post. The most recent example I can find of this is New friend put us in awkward p...
