@Catija avoids inappropriate jokes

@apaul I don't think you can. :P

@Catija Can avoid inappropriate jokes?

Yeah.

1:08 AM
I think I did...

Inferring it is the same thing as saying it. :P

Almost

Going home. :P

1:26 AM
Have fun

2 hours later…
3:28 AM
Hi @CaptainBohemian :)

@D.Hutchinson have you read my message?

So, you offered him coauthorship, and yet he still implements delay tactics when you ask him to review your manuscript. I'd say you're wasting your time trying to convince him.
yeah ...

I didn't know what you mean by offer yesterday until afterwards you left.

yeah
glad you understand now :)
but yeah, my gut feeling is that you might be wasting your time ...

I didn't directly tell him I offered him authorship but in his mind he understands we will both be shown as authors on the papers.

3:31 AM
perpetually delaying a meeting to review your manuscript is basically him / her say that they're not interested in publishing with you ...
yeah ...
so, he's just not interested ...
I'd advise you to not waste your own time ...

that's so obvious in that the manuscripts I sent to him imclude we both as authors.

I see ...
so what will be your next moves?

well, but he says he is very interested in reviewing my papers since the beginning.
the problem is he always uses up time in other things every time.
it's like he lacks time or he can't manage time well.
if time is naturally enough for him, he would review my papers, but it's just isn't.
well, I have understood people like us, academics, wouldn't naturally have time for doing everything we want to do.
I have sorely lacked time for long. This happens probably since I entered graduate school, and the problem gets more and more serious.
before entering graduate school, I didn't have this problem often.
I contunually manage to chase time and need to give up a lot of things I really want to do. I think for us, we really need to find the priority of the things we want to do and do them in the order of priority. In this way, there are always things left undone forever.
I think my master advisor just didn't put reviewing my papers as high enough priority, so he never gets time doing it.
I have told him this point, but he denied. He said he puts it as his first priority (certainly besides his basic obligation as professor) and he wouldn't conduct new research until finishing it.

4:02 AM
I see :(

@D.Hutchinson you went to dinner again?

haha ... having a hot, steamy chai latte :)

@D.Hutchinson if you are having dinner, then I may go to lunch and continue later.
@D.Hutchinson I also only eat one meal a day, but I prefer to eat breakfast or lunch than dinner.

no, we can talk a bit :)

@D.Hutchinson because when I wake from sleeping, that's the time I am the most hungry.

4:08 AM
I see
regarding, school, I think you should move on as soon as possible ...
it sounds as if you have been waiting long enough
don't waste your time :)

@D.Hutchinson I am not so hungry at night if I eat in daytime and can stave off hunger by snacks at night.

I see
there's too much to do when I wake up ... I can't eat until dinnertime :)

@D.Hutchinson yes, I have wasted a lot of time in prompting him. And the hardship and distress therein is beyond understanding of usual people.
@D.Hutchinson that's what I become very irritable to usual people asking irrelevant personal question.

yeah, I know :(

@D.Hutchinson they just can't understand this thing if I talk to them. I don't feel the meaning of tellng others my personal matter if they can't help.
@D.Hutchinson maybe they don't understand this point because they have never experienced the difficulty I experience.
@D.Hutchinson I have never arbitrarily asked strangers their personal matter because I am afraid they are in some difficulty which I can't help and they may become irritable upon my asking.

4:18 AM
yeah :(
@CaptainBohemian I am moving soon ...

in this ghostly city there are merchants everywhere on the street who like to accost passersby to promote their merchandises. They usually start by asking them some personal questions. I have got annoyed by them very much.

To Tibet - I had applied to join a monastery and recently got accepted
I'm really excited about my new plans ...

@D.Hutchinson what? you want to be a monk?

@CaptainBohemian I'm going to live a Buddhist way of life soon - with no plans to return to New York :(

@D.Hutchinson why? You don't like New York?

4:25 AM
My family recently is going through tragedy, so it's a good time to step away and leave for a bit.
No, I just want to make some changes for now.

I have no helpful family actually. My family has scattered. Actually originally in my home only Father maintained the family, but I have lost him when in graduate school.
So my family has long been in tradgedy.
and probably is no longer has any meaning.

Oh geez ... I'm sorry to hear :(

because there is no longer any family gathering.
even during festivals.

I see :(

I can go to anywhere and nobody would care where I go.
even I am at this home, nobody would care about me.

4:54 AM
I think I shouldn't go back this home after graduation because I understand this home is no longer like a home without Father.
I originally also planned not going back and tried to look for vocations distant from this home.
but ...

3 hours later…
7:50 AM
I see :(

8:01 AM
what kind of vocations?
sorry to hear about your Father :(

I originally tried to find the positions of research assistants.
I wanted to apply for PhD programs when I graduated but I had to make some money first.

Q: Who should remove many people in cc from emails?

EdgarSome business emails which I receive show lots of people in cc. And my initial answer will include the same people in cc. Maybe I confirm that there is a problem and that I will work on it. And then there might be lots of follow up emails back and forth with lots of details. Most of the time mo...

I see

I don't really have nonacademic skills.
but I found the positions of research assistants are all in experimental or programming fields. Even the one I saw the closest to my field is numerical relativity. Nevertheless, I almost applied to any of these scientific positions and even some teaching assistant positions for physics expeiments.
It's really not easy to get a position probably because of my fields are not close to the fields of these positions.
I didn't get acceptance to a teaching assistant until half a year after graduation, when I almost used up money.

8:20 AM
I see :(

I had to borrow money from friends to rent a house near the university where I was going to teach before that position gave me the salary of the first month.

8:46 AM
@D.Hutchinson How soon is soon? Now I'm curious. Which monastery are you going to? Why go to a monastery and not just live a Buddhist life in the real world? Or is this like a training course in Buddhism? What will you be learning?

@Tinkeringbell what is a Buddhist life like?

@CaptainBohemian I don't know.... Hence the load of questions ;)

@Tinkeringbell I saw a facebook friend of mine from Netherlands changed his name as ''to Boddah'' after he deleted all his facebook friends. I am not sure what that name means. I guess it's related to Buddhism.

2 hours later…
10:25 AM
@CaptainBohemian Hmmm... I don't know of that happening massively or something, that's new for me too. I don't know whether it's related or not ;)

A J
@Tinkeringbell o/

Hi @AJ :)

A J
howza?

Annoyed at the answers my meta is getting. Seems like I have to step in myself :P
And for the rest I'm busy crocheting ;)

A J
Noun: crochet (plural crochets)
  1. Needlework made by looping thread with a hooked needle.
  2. crochet m (plural crochets)
  3. hook (rod bent into a curved shape)
  4. (typography) square bracket
  5. fang (of snake)
(2 more not shown…)
Verb: crochet (third-person singular simple present crochets, present participle crocheting, simple past and past participle crocheted)
  1. (transitive, intransitive) To make (a piece of) needlework using a hooked needle; to make interlocking loops of thread.
Cool!

10:31 AM
@AJ Yeah, I've just started my very first ever blanket. That's going to take some time :)

3 hours later…
1:48 PM
@Tinkeringbell That's funny... it's about all I make.

@Catija What's your favorite to make?

Scarves.

@Catija (I meant to ask for a blanket pattern ;) ) But scarves are cool too, I just finished a hygge scarf. Now, I'm making a nuts about squares blanket. I almost got the first square done :D

@Tinkeringbell Oh... I don't know... I've never made the same one twice.
Are you on ravelry?

@Catija I have an account, but I almost never use it.

1:59 PM
Ah. The blanket I made for Ben, for example:

@Catija Oh wow... That looks amazing :D

:)

I used to make a lot of these:

2:12 PM
Aww, that's cute.

2:23 PM
Well. That's Texas for you... deep freeze and ice storm on Tuesday... 65 F on Saturday.

@Catija Sounds a bit like here, today and tomorrow would be freezing and for next week they're predicing 12/13 degrees ;)

@Tinkeringbell Is that normal for y'all? The only time I've been in your area it was Christmas Day and we were flying through Amsterdam to get to Berlin and they lost my luggage... I had to walk to the hostel in PJ pants because that was what I used to wear on planes... until that trip :/
^ Blanket I made for Andy's niece. I now refuse to ever make another Granny Squares blanket.

@Catija What's normal? ;) It's a bit weird for it to be changing that much over so little time, but it happens...
@Catija I would be soooo bored after that! ...
I did one granny once and never wanted to do that again!
I love making stuffed animals, this one I made for a friend of mine that collects mice:

@Tinkeringbell Blankets are all pretty boring... Though, if you do a granny sampler... where each square is different... that's probably more interesting... you still have to stitch them all together at the end. I think I actually crocheted these together rather than stitching them but I don't remember... I do remember making them into long rows and then going the other direction.
@Tinkeringbell That's really nice! I'm not really good at the detailed stuff like that. I made Ash a kitty...
But it's not fancy.

@Catija Yeah, that's what I'm planning to do with this one too. Just crochet them together in long rows ;).... I'm now making this one: itsallinanutshell.com/2017/02/25/nuts-about-squares-cal-2017

2:31 PM

@Catija It's cute :D

@Tinkeringbell Oh, and those are big squares, too... mine were tiny. :P Less sewing.

This was the first thing I made, except for a chain and a row of single crochets:

My username on Ravelry is the same as here... I like to keep things simple... so if you want to be friends on a site you don't use, feel free :P
Awww, that's really cute!

@Catija Haha, I could look you up ;) But I've had that account since 2014, and there's nothing on it ;) I'm taking all these pics from my imgur :)

2:33 PM
Some of mine are from insta and some are from ravelry... I don't put much up there.

@Catija I guess I should start using it, it looks like I can keep stuff there that I now have lying around on paper everywhere :)

@Tinkeringbell It's actually really good for tracking your yarn so that you don't have to keep all of the wrappers around.

@Catija I really need to start that too... :) I've got 3 boxes of yarn already...

^ One of my first attempts at amigurumi.

@Catija Hey, an octopus :) I made octopuses as well...
I don't believe I have a picture though :/

2:40 PM
^ Scarf for Andy... I really love making them the long way... it's a pain to count out initially (if there's a repeat you need to match) but it looks really nice.
And that pattern was really easy, too... I think it's just [SC, Ch1,] repeat until done with a few turns in there.
@Tinkeringbell Are you doing one of the color collections they show or did you pick your own colors?

@Catija I picked the earth colorway... I hope to have it finished before mother's day, so I can gift it to mom. She saw one at the local yarn shop and loved it ;)
@Catija That looks great :D
I think I only made 1 scarf lengthwise, it was fun to do but I hated the counting, and in the end it did turn out a little longer than expected (I didn't expect the acrylic yarn to stretch that much)

I actually made two of those... one for Andy and one for a friend on the internet... I sent it to him (shades of purple) and then he disappeared... it was slightly odd but I hope he's still enjoying it.
It's also held up really well... I think I made it 10 years ago.

That sounds amazing. I still have to wait and see how my scarves hold up... I only started crocheting about 4-5 years ago, and the first scarf I made is only 2,5 years old ;)
@Catija Ugh, internet friends :P

My mom taught me when I was little... various projects over the years... more recently than in the past... I made an Etsy shop for a while with crocheted necklaces... no one bought any of them so now I just have bunch hanging around.

@Catija Which is why I never started selling stuff. I just made it for people I considered friends :)

2:55 PM

Oh cool, you crocheted the wire? I never got the hang of that ...

Yep. It's actually not wire... it's thread.

@Catija Oh, now I see :) It looks wire-y though ;)

The first one uses metallic thread, which is why. :D

@Catija hahaha, I only ever made one piece of jewelry, and that's tatted, not crocheted ;)

2:58 PM
That's cool :D

I really need to pick up that skill again too sometime soon ;) Ah well, first I want this blanket finished!

The necklaces didn't actually take long to make... I spent more time figuring out what beads to use... you have to string them all on before you start crocheting, so it takes planning.

A J
Nice knitting skills you ladies got.

But actually crocheting them was pretty quick... maybe 30 minutes per strand? I'd make them in 3-5 strands.
@AJ Crochet :P

@AJ heathen :P
@Catija I think I'd never survive the planning phase ;)

3:01 PM
I'm really regimented about things and it made me realize that sometimes you just have to be more free... they're all chain stitches, so you'd have to compare where the beads fell or you'd end up with all of the beads in the same spot, which would be really bulky there but empty in other places. It was pretty easy by the 10th one :P

A J
For me, it's knitting. Like you might call them pumps, sling back, wedge, platform heels, but for me, they are only heels. :P

Bennett has shut himself up in his room... I knocked, waited, opened the door and he slammed it in my face...I didn't realize they entered the teenage phase so early.
@AJ Except they're completely different... it's like calling shoes "socks".

A J
What's the difference?

@Catija Awww.... what's he so mad about? Have you run out of cake?

Crocheting is done with a single curved hook, one stitch at a time. Knitting is done with two needles working from one needle to the other with all of the stitches being passed between the two.

3:05 PM
And tatting can be done with either shuttles or needles :)

A J
And heathen?

Heathen? That's just a word for a non-believer.

That's what you get called for not knowing the difference. I'll pin those two posts, and I don't want to hear people saying they don't know again :P

A J
@Catija ohh
Songs of the day: The Way You Make Me Feel.

3:08 PM
I probably would have gone with "philistine".
@AJ Michael Jackson?

@Catija "barbarian" works too :)

A J
@Catija yes

A J
I forgot to add another in that. :/
But here it is: Billie Jeans
During college, my roommate was a fan of MJ and danced like him. He used to play MJ's songs during dance practice. That's when I listened to MJ first.

Whenever I think of the song, it's in reference to this scene:

A J
3:17 PM
Lol
Did you listen to Cindy Lauper or Paul McCartney?

Sure.... I have dance movie references for that, too:

@Catija Oh, teeange phase... I don't want to scare you, Catija, but on Parenting someone wrote that her 16 year old daughter sneaked in a boy, although she wasn't allowed to. They went intothe basement...
...and played board games.

HAHAHA perfect!

so better hide that chess set before it's too late

A J

In case of meta questions with a discussion tag, should the OP even accept an answer? I don't mean specif questions like "Why was...closed/declined/etc.?", but more general questions about site policy and so on. Like my "Is it rude...?" question.
Even if there is an answer that's a clear community favorite and the OP would accept that one.

@AnneDaunted I generally don't think meta questions should really have accepts unless maybe they're support requests... some bug reports... but FRs and Discussions really shouldn't.
But there's no way to control it.
There's arguments on either side.

I got that feeling, too. So thanks for confirming
It would kind of feel strange, because the OP would then decide for the whole community. They just happened to be the first one to ask that question, in a way.

In that case you just have to remember that an answer being accepted doesn't mean anything on SE other than "this helped me (the OP) the most".
It's not uncommon to see rants with answers accepted that just validate the rant but are extremely downvoted.

Yes, but it may be confusing to other users who may mistake it for community consensus
one of those cases I remember well
sparked like two meta posts

3:37 PM
Meta really isn't designed to function well for what it is. They took a Q&A formula and force us to use it for issue tracking and discussion. Without a complete overhaul of what meta looks like, these issues will persist.

At least a place where you don't have to delete so many comments :-)

I've had discussions with staff about it over time. They realize there's an issue but changing how accepts work on meta would be more complicated because there would be two sets of rules. The whole "voting on meta is different" thing already complicates things... most people forget that really only relates to Feature Requests. Other question types should be voted on normally.
Threaded comments with hierarchy would be useful. Long discussions in comments can be really difficult to follow.

it all appears rather makeshift

The site design has changed very little in the 10 years SE has existed.

It looks nice indeed
but has some weaknesses

3:46 PM
When you have a big concept, you focus on the heart of it until you realize that you need more... if you're trying to meet that need quickly, you use the infrastructure you already have with the hope of improving it later... and before you have the chance, you need something else... and then the stop-gap solution becomes entrenched.

Do you think they'll ever consider the need to overhaul meta great enough to spend resources on it?

Short of starting from scratch and rebuilding from the ground up, I think it's unlikely that they will have time to fix anything. The layoffs have forced them to focus on core concerns ... like earning money. The hope is that focusing on Q&A related income sources (Channels and Enterprise) will trickle out to the public network.
Unfortunately, I doubt that features that would be beneficial to meta would also be beneficial to private SE sites which are unlikely to have much, if any, meta activity.

private beta sites?

It's possible that there may be interest in threading comments on private sites, not sure if it's a priority, though.
@AnneDaunted nope. Private sites for companies to host internal Q&A. stackoverflow.com/channels

Thanks!

3:54 PM
Enterprise is hosted on a company's own servers. Channels are hosted by SE on private servers and aren't accessible without a specific account connection.

I have to admit that until now I didn't really understand how SE makes money

Jobs and ads, mostly. But focusing on jobs has pulled dev attention away from core Q&A. They decided in November to relax the emphasis on jobs and move into development of Channels.
Well... they announced it in November. They'd started working on Channels several months earlier.

Is that better for "us"?

Yes. If Channels and Enterprise are profitable, they will work on improving the code base and site features... currently they're improving search. This will be valuable to both the public and private sites.
While not all improvements will benefit both, more of them will than jobs, which shares nothing with Q&A.

Thanks for all that infor, Catija. You are a real expert on SE!

4:05 PM
I'm off for a bit. I don't have all of the answers but if you have other questions, let me know. :)
Anytime. :)

Pretty sure Channels alpha starts Feb 12

7:55 PM
... only for special people. :P

8:10 PM
What what?

@apaul Is there something specific you're confused about?

8:40 PM
@Catija Channels alpha?

Channels isn't live yet.
First there are those who get alpha access, the first testers. So that starts for a select few on Feb 12, last I heard.

@apaul Read up if you want a better understanding of what Channels is... I talk about it with Anne.

8:59 PM
@Catija Ah "I see" said the blind man.

9:23 PM
I wonder how well jobs works actually
I made a profile here, but I only every see the same few companies. So I'm guessing it's just not on companies' radar over here. So I wonder if that's different in the US

@Mithrandir I had actually flagged it once and it was disputed. i even thought about asking here about quality standards.

I feel like the SO blog has talked about Jobs market saturation in different regions... but I don't have any links. Possibly part of the developer survey? I don't use SO at all, so I'm not on Jobs.
@AnneDaunted disputed as opposed to declined?

Yes, disputed

"disputed" means people reviewed it as "Looks Okay"

two members thought it looked ok

9:28 PM
Yeah. Dunno. I avoid acting on those personally.
I'm so tired of deleting comments there.

In general or that unplugs monitor question in specific?

Both?

Yes, surely possible. I see a lot of unnecessary comments.

84 deleted on the question.

9:37 PM
The struggle is real.

Any relief in sight?

*pops up*

Not if they don't give us a comment lock.

maybe it should be the other way round - flagging to keep a comment

Ha ha.
