Q: How to get along with European roommates?

Gabriel DiegoI am a white male engineer born in Brazil and lived also in United States and France. I usually opt to live with roommates since it is more affordable and also I like the atmosphere of a shared living. The only problem that I have is that, despite rarely having problems with my multinational room...

Q: Is it weird that I sometimes don't respond to comments / jokes?

purpleladydragonsWhen someone makes an off the cuff remark, joke, or observation to me, I sometimes just laugh and nod along. I realized this silence might be kind of weird. I typically don't respond because I don't have anything clever to say back, so sometimes I'll just say "That's pretty funny". Most often tho...

@dhein Nice :) Hopefully some of it helps :)
> drunken messages or phone calls.
Is that really considered sexual harassment?
With regard to the #MeToo thingy that's happening on twitter/facebook

6:46 AM
That was my first thought as well, but TBH, that probably depends on what was said and other circumstances. And if the offender feels bad about it and wants to make up for it, be my guest

Yeah but if we're counting that... it sort of devalues the whole hashtag ;)

@JarkoDubbeldam site switcher dropdown - help, I think

I thought I saw girlfriends post this thing and was thinking rape or pussy-grabbing..
not getting a drunk text message.
I was confused, that these people were having those problems, but I can imagine them being the sort of girls that are screaming 'murder' when somebody texts them, so for me, that's the last of that hashtag... I'm not taking it seriously anymore ;)

@Mithrandir I couldn't find it on the help page though
@SmokeDetector Is this already gone?

6:54 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Yes... and he didn't even use my flags :(

@Tinkeringbell Well, the hashtag is used by victims, while that question was by an offender. I think that that is significantly difference. It doesn't devalue anything if a potential offender feels that it was sexual harassment

Hmmm... I still think that if we're counting things like drunk text messages as sexual harassment, this world is very, very broken. And I want the guy to understand that, because he's feeling way too bad about this... But I don't think I can write an answer without starting to rant (or one of those major discussions like with the Mary/Nina question)

On one side, yes. On the other side, now that a lot of people are opening up about it, I don't think it is a good time to start deciding who is allowed to feel bad, and who isn't

@JarkoDubbeldam Right. They should have done that before starting the whole hype ;)
To avoid attention whoring....

Oh please not another Mary/Nina dilemma sigh

7:03 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan @dhein this one... no Mary or Nina
I just feel bad for the guilt complex that that guy has been talked into...;) Because I don't get the 'seriousness' of the offense from the question.

7:22 AM
IDK, I think it's a tricky thing. On one side, people opening up and being honest about it, being able to talk about these taboos is a good thing. On the other hand, the idea that, as long as you spout your story on FB, all your sins will wash away is a bit attentionseeky.
Similar to thoughts and prayers. It's nice and all, but in the end completely useless.

A company asked me for a snippet of any code I made for opensource or private. Should I just sent them the snippet from here: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/55989/31033 And mentioning that it was for a coding challenge, or might that miss the purpose?

8:52 AM
Hmm, on one side, being able to golf in a language, implies that you are pretty familiar and comfortable with it. On the other hand, codegolfing isnt anywhere close to something you want to have in your codebase

Exactly these 2 thoughts I had in my mind too. '^.^

9:21 AM
@dhein, if you can point out exactly what kind of behaviour there isn't done normally... Maybe show that solution, and write a 'good practice' one as well?
To accompany it?
So it shows that a.) you're comfortable enough with a language to do challenges and b.) You know about best practices and can apply them to your own code.

Most of these submissions are not as impressive when ungolfed
fairly trivial and so

But then you're basically handing in 2 pieces of code... Don't know if that's okay...
Ah okay, I've never code-golfed.
I thought that Life-thingy you linked me a few weeks ago was code-golf ;-) That was very impressive :)

Basically, CG is throw every good practice out of the window to make things as short as possible
the golf part is to use as little bytes as possible
the Life thing was hard enough to do properly in the first place

@Tinkeringbell: Well this specific challenge was a polyglot (a code being compilable in different languages, having different functionalities for each of them), so hard to give a good practice way to accompany it :P

@dhein, I'll let you figure this out with @JarkoDubbeldam. You both know more about code-golfing than me ;)

9:26 AM
But, it is a polyglot of c99 vs c89 so demonstrating I'm VERY aware of the standard. and as that companys product is a C and Java code validation and code coverage compiler built in for GCC, I thought it still might be a snippet, they might have fun with.
@Tinkeringbell: sure, thanks for your inut anyways :)
@Tinkeringbell: feel free to have a look on the link anyways, I'm very proud on that snippet :)

You probably know better what it does than me. You should judge for yourself, is it just hacky golfing or is there more behind it?
OTOH, if they ask you for a snippet of some project, it is possible that they want some functional code. Your judgement call to tell whether this represents any qualities that they might want to see in that

@JarkoDubbeldam: It isn't really about golfing, but more about a polyglot. So the code behaves different depended on the C standards version it compiled with. Well, I just sent them the snippet and noted, if they are interested in something more practical, I would like them to give me further requirements. They just asked for some Code, written by me in C or C++ and added "It doesn't need to compile.".

hum, spent the last hour trying to find the source of some obscure warning generated by my odbc driver =.=

@dhein It doesn't need to compile... Hmm...

snippets can be annoying to compile as standalone i guess

@NVZ shouldn't happen too fast, I'd like to score my helpful spam flags :P
I turned on autoflagging yesterday, but it didn't use my flags for the previous one, and also not for this one. I think I forgot a step ;-) I'll look into it tonight

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell if you'd like, you can check out the mother of all spam detection: charcoal hq

@NVZ Been there ;-)

I get virtually all my flags from first post and late answer review queues - about a tenth of them require flagging and an alarming chunk of them, I would flag if it weren't for the fact that they're newcomers, so I'm a bit more lenient

(this is on Worldbuilding)

@Tinkeringbell autoflagging works by picking up to 3 random volunteers. 3 flags aren't enough to remove a spam. the rest have to be cast by other users manually.

@Mithrandir24601 you should flag especially if they're new users

also, the autoflags are cast on spam from various sites, not just ips.

@Mithrandir Why not do it yourself? It's clearly one of those cases where it doesn't really matter if there are 1 or 5 close votes IMO.... (just curious, because I'm seeing very little close-voting from mods, even on those things that are imo obvious)
btw, this one could do with a healthy dose of details imo: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/5532/…

@Tinkeringbell I did vote to close it. I'm a moderator on Literature, not IPS...

@Mithrandir Where did I get that idea then... Sorry ;-)

NVZ
Is it weird that this question is closed as POB? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/5505/345

"Is this weird?" is an opinion based question.

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell so what about "is it rude?"

12:23 PM
That's what I picked ;-) It IMO needs some editing to bring out the How can I respond to X a little better..
'is it rude' I think also fall in that category... example?
Without an example I'm thinking I'm walking into a trap :P

NVZ
i'm not saying that that question is great, but i'm thinking why is "is it weird" treated differently than "is it rude". "Is it rude?" has been well-received: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/search?q=%22is+it+rude%22

'rude' is less opinion based than 'weird' IMO
it's weird to me to see milk in plastic cartons after using milk in bags for the past 7 years, but to my cousins the bags are weird

NVZ
@Mithrandir hmm.. but that's even pob as it is.. what's rude for me may not be rude for you. lol

@NVZ , btw, the Opinionbased question also needs a bit more cultural information.

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell that question could benefit from an edit with additional details. yes. but the idea of "is it weird" is not any different from "is it rude" is my current thinking. i could be wrong.

12:27 PM
every question could benefit from more details IMO

Hmm... I think you've found a meta :-)

Q: How can I be confident?

Ruba MaherHow can I be confident when I talk with people, and not being shy to talk and share my openions with them?

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell well, would you like to pick up the ball?

I think, being rude differs in so far from being weird, as culture usually dictates what has to be seen as rude, while weirdness is more of a personal preference and therefor more of a opinionbased thing. Or am I missing something?

12:30 PM
@Mithrandir Yeah.... that's also true, more details are always better. But in this case, we don't even know what culture we're dealing with... basic info (that I think I need for writing an answer) is missing or just not coming across clearly
@NVZ Let's race. I might have time tonight to write one, but I also promised a group of friends to do some gaming and I'm very busy working on a new crochet project that needs to be finished before winter arrives ;-)

@Tinkeringbell this isnt writing.. this is chatting.
chatters block, not a problem today. maybe tomorrow, who knows

I'll put it on the list... I still have an answer to finish for that close-reason for 'telling people what to do/write'
@NVZ You need to write if you want to do chatting...
Otherwise, it would be talking ;-)

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell i would think of "is it 'adjective' to do 'X'?" sort of questions. are they pob? or something like that

12:34 PM
@Mithrandir What went wrong there? Did the system not recognise your authority?

@Tinkeringbell 'twas before they were elected, but it looks odd after they're elected

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell its an old elu question; where the close voters are now mods, but werent back then.

@NVZ Are 'Is it weird/rude/adjective to do 'X' questions POB?
There's your question title...
@Mithrandir Ah, I get it ;-) Thank you!

Guys, is it normal if a girlfriend dumps you because you might get fat again? I've known the girl for 4 months and I've been in the military all this time. I lost about 80 pounds while in the military. She told me she was gonna leave me if I get fat again. @Pavel well, if you want an answer, do ask on the main site; and here we can help you formulate it better, not answer it.

I told her that if I get fat I'll do it on purpose to see if she leaves me just or get rid of a shitty person, and she answered, saying:"Might as well stop talking now", so I said goodbye and deleted my Facebook, she hasn't contacted me ever since.

12:41 PM
"is it normal" is likely to get closed as POB ;-)

@Tinkeringbell Better asking if its weird?:P

is it a girlfriend (like, relationship), or female friend?

@Pavel: Would she ahve any means to come over to you? And especially, where exactly you need help with? Whats your goal? try to collect these things and ask them on the main site: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/ask

She has my phone number

12:50 PM
Sound to me like you already broke up with her :P

I just got frustrated cause I think she's a bitch

@NVZ Given enough context, "is [this] rude?" can be objectively answered as it's a measure of what the society of that context finds rude, while 'weird' varies from person to person, hence is POB. Or at least, that's my opinion on it :P
Oh wait, @dhein pretty much already said that... At least someone agrees!

Okay, little experiment. I've edited this. Go or no-go, don't do it again?

@Pavel I agree with @Tinkeringbell - does it matter if "it's normal" or not if, by the sounds of things, you seem quite happy with the outcome?

I'll see it tomorrow then. I'm off for today :) Bye!

ciao for now
