Proposed Q&A site for developers, IT Professionals and Enterprise/Solution/Domain Architects working on Cloud Computing platforms. Includes multiple vendors and technologies: AWS, Azure, OpenStack, etc.
No real interest, and not even sure it's got enough "experts" to go with. Seems, from the description, that it's probably better as a part of ServerFault, unless they kick related questions out.
Proposal: Cloud Computing
All of the services list on this proposal is already covered by StackOverflow
The AWS, Azure and the OpenStack tags on StackOverflow.
Should there be a new site to cover these services?
Proposal: Windows 10
Windows 10 is very much on-topic on Super User, with a tag that has more than 13K questions. Why do we need a specific site dedicated to it?
The informed badge is this most easiest badge to get I mean you can get it just by going on the tour page staying there for a while without reading anything and after a few minutes you will get it.
Proposed Q&A site for anyone interested in self-directed learning (MOOCs, OCW, libraries, etc.), as a student, teacher, researcher or other enthusiast.
BTW, there have been several failed attempts in the past to offer a Cloud Computing site:
Generic Cloud Computing
AWS-specific
Azure
However, none of them have reached the required support.
How does this proposal compare to StackOverflow?
StackOverflow currently receives the most cloud-ori...
This is in line with a prior question I asked about teaching induction, but this is specific to the loop invariant step.
I have not had great success helping my students see how to choose a loop invariant that will (1) always be correct (ie. actually be a loop invariant) and (2) create the struc...
On advanced Excel courses I teach attendees how to use the macro recorder. I also start VBA beginner trainings with the recorder and analysing the recorded code. I find the macro recorder a good entry point to learning VBA and programming. I'm always struggling with exercises though.
What exerci...
Last summer I was excited to get my hands on a Makey Makey. I played around with it for a couple days, but it ended up just gathering dust for most of the year. The same goes for a Sphero SPRK.
They were fun to play around with, but they weren't overtly connected to what I was teaching, so I did...
It’s no secret that despite the phenomenal rise in computing over the last 50 years, women are still not engaging with computer science at the same rate as men.
Girls are less likely to enroll in introductory computer science courses in school and the number of females studying computer science ...
We have two entry points for programming students here: one is web-oriented and features HTML5/CSS3/ECMA6, and the other is in a robotics environment using LabView. Both classes address the "big 5": variables, objects, functions, conditional logic, and iteration.
We are thinking about a new e...
What works for building programs that are accessible to "non-traditional" CS students and which help to support the students so that they enjoy the class, start seeing themselves as "CS types," and ultimately succeed in the program and go on in CS?

Yeah, I wondered if the girl one and the equity one should both be in our first announcement on reddit, or if we should just stick with the girl one for now
It's... basically an unfathomably vast web board. Subreddits (the word after the "/r/" in the url) are the communities (which you "subscribe" to). Popular content gets voted up to the top, and is continually replaced by new content.
It's not social media at all
It's nearly fully anonymous, and they were total extremists about not shutting down any content for years, until they (after many years) started shutting down child-porn and revenge-porn rings
And after that, they went after the most extreme forms of hate-speech, like the communities devoted to trolling the rest of reddit to convince fat people to kill themselves. (And the like)
It's supposed to be community modded, but the mods are of varying quality.
It's pretty different, but I can't describe how exactly
In some CS courses (especially undergraduate and high school courses) the tests and the final exam are written on paper without the use of a computer.
But if the students are in a CS course, shouldn't they be allowed to use the computer? If some mistakes are difficult enough to not be noticeable ...
Now that we're in public beta, it might be a good time to think about expanding parts of the help center. For example the what's on topic page isn't as helpful to new users as it can be.
Additionally, the text here:
(The above section was adapted from MetaFilter’s FAQ.)
that suggests that...
@ItamarGreen It was a hot network question (it'll be shown on the sidebar under 'Hot Network Questions' for a while, because it has sufficient votes in a short time)
@Aurora0001 My only options for that new MVC answer are "Looks Okay" (it doesn't), "Edit" (I'm not the source of the information), "Recommend Deletion" (which I'd hate to do to a new user unless it's extreme), and "Skip" (which also seems not ideal)
They all seem like bad options.
I want to help foster a healthy beta site. How should I approach questions in the Low Quality queue?
Well, if it's any consolation, the post can't be deleted from the queue anyway, even if every user eligible to review it does so
You need 6 "Recommend Deletion" votes, but there are only 3 eligible users
Still, to answer your question, I think you should judge the post's quality, regardless of the fact that the user is new. You don't have to be mean—leaving an encouraging comment is a great idea—but you should make the decision in review that reflects the post's quality.
I would personally Recommend Deletion in its current state. If the post is edited, the review will be disputed anyway, so the OP does have a chance to fix it
Bioinformatics has "9.1 questions per day", and has 210 questions overall. They've been hanging out close to 10 questions per day for quite a while now. In the meantime, we have "4.1 questions per day", have been around for 75% of the time they've been around, but have 121 questions.
Would @EllenSpertus be a good moderator for this site? She's later to the game here, but brought us a wave of users when we needed it, and knows a lot about this field.
How come I can edit something whenever I feel like it, but it still takes several voters before an edit can be approved, even if I am one of the voters?
I understand if the system feels like semi-trusted people should have to collectively vote on edits, but if the system trusts a user enough to take edits directly, shouldn't their votes be sufficient to suggest that an edit is worthwhile?
Well, sometimes it's better to have more than one person look into an edit. If it is obviously good\bad, then the reviews will reflect that (unless there's a naughty reviewer, but we have a small community at the moment, so I doubt there is one)
Many beginners strive to solve given problems, without thinking about efficiency of solution.
Consider such Python code:
data = [int(n) for n in input().split()]
max_el = max(data)
# count multiplicity of every element in data
counting_table = [data.count(i) for i in range(max_el+1)]
This s...
In mathematics, the binary logarithm (log2 n) is the power to which the number 2 must be raised to obtain the value n. That is, for any real number x,

{\displaystyle x=\log _{2}n\quad \Longleftrightarrow \quad 2^{x}=n.}

I feel this 3k views question is a great jump start for our site. I think it brought many new users (some answered the question, which is why I'm assuming that it brought them here)
I wish I could word another question about pulling girls in - there's so much activity on the site right now, it would become another hot question right away. Plus it would get dialogue going about that issue
I agree. Maybe this could help you: My school takes girls to a tour of Microsoft (in the country; there's a Microsoft center over here, so they go there) once a year (taking the 11th graders of each year). While this is an attempt to engage girls in Computer Science, it is not enough. It does however make them a bit more interested (this I know because I asked a few of them this year when they came back)
I don't understand your sentence "Use this tag to ask questions about teaching various aspects of the MVC design pattern, and not for questions about the design pattern in general." Do you mean "about design patterns in general"?
about mvc in general. It's a tag for asking about teaching mvc design pattern, not about the pattern itself. While those questions can be useful for some, they might not be fully withing the site's scope of computer science education.
actually now that I wrote that I see that the tag edit isn't as good as it can be
I was trying to think of a way to bring the girl question back around - if there were a fresh take on it (that wasn't a strict duplicate) it could easily become another hot question right now
@BenI. It's kind of you to suggest me as a moderator, but I think other people have invested more time, and I'm not sure I can commit the time to being a moderator.
I do think it would be good to have someone at the college-level as a moderator, in addition to people at the high school level.
That was my thought as well, and I thought you would make an excellent choice
But I definitely respect not having enough time, and thanks for the time and energy that you do contribute. Your input is certainly appreciated from my little corner!
Of course, right now, there are no other reasonable alternatives at a university level as far as I can tell :P
In team discussions (robotics team) we have a 10 minutes rule which says that when someone joins, they stay quite for 10 minutes, and only then they can talk. This makes sure they know what's going on.
If only there was a graph that showed how well we're doing. Then we could learn how to improve even more. cough Just kidding. I've seen quite a few metas for different sites and from what I see we're doing relatively good for now.
@EllenSpertus I nominated you anyway, but I mentioned that you indicated you did not have time. You can always edit the nomination if you change your mind, but there is absolutely no pressure to do so.
Or you can bother a moderator, when they're appointed; they will unlock the analytics privilege, and can use it (although sharing the data verbatim is discouraged)
I don't pay too much attention to that. I'm sure the downvoters had their reasons, and that's perfectly ok. CM team would make their choice and, because they know what they're doing, it would be what's best for the site, so I'd be all for it.
@Aurora0001 8-<
@Aurora0001 I'm not going to bother moderators with anything except for flagging things if their attention is needed.
good in what way? I'm still not sure what exactly he's asking. Is he asking to create a lesson plan for him? or is he asking for suggestion for lesson plans on "something about computational thinking"?
I've had to do similar tasks. I had to give a lesson on dynamic programming and memoization to high school students for 25 minutes, with no knowledge about their background (and no indication of whether I would even have access to a projector)
Dear god, when I had to plan my sample lesson, I would have been all over this site if it had existed. I spent easily 15 hours working on one 25 minute lesson.
I would be all for helping him, if (but not only if) he gave us a direction of what he thought.
@GypsySpellweaver couldn't have put it better :)
not asking for much. I doubt he has no ideas of his own. Any idea he gives would be a place to start from (kind of like any non-linear search algorithm. There needs to be an initial point)
I invited him to chat - I can make a separate room if you guys prefer. I'm happy to spend some time helping him brainstorm - hard hard hard hard problem
I don't understand the "The answer to your question" section at all, but his first part could be its own QA
But if he doesn't want to post it, that's okay
I might spin a question out of that myself, thinking about it --- there's a valuable question in there... I know that some folks teach Objects first, and some teach Objects last, but I've never understood Objects first at all, so I'd love to hear some justifications for it from practitioners who've actually used that tact
That's not really his question, though.
Sorry, I seem to have distracted myself here. As far as his question, yes, it could be its own QA pair, I think. I'm just not 100% sure I understand what he's said.
I'm... gonna go post a question...
I posted my question. He can still post his (and his answer) if he can make it more intelligible.
Sometimes, I feel like I'm having a conversation with myself...
On CodeHS we have a very streamlined system for submitting and managing student work. You can use our courses, or if you want, create your own assignments and starter code. The students can run the Java code all in the web browser (or if you'd like in your own IDE), and then when they click submi...

At his point we have 20 questions tagged lesson-ideas. 4 have accepted answers, and only 2 are on the unanswered tab.
We also have 17 questions tagged curriculum-design. # of which have accepted answers, and only 1 is on the unanswered tab.
In both cases some of the questions have needed some b...
However, if you are having suicidal ideation, your best option is probably to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. People are on call there to talk to people struggling with the same kind of issues you are, regardless of location. US: +1-800-273-8255. If calling's not good, they can chat with you live online. Just go to this site, and you can talk with someone online from 10PM-6AM UTC: suicidepreventionlifeline.org/GetHelp/LifelineChat.aspx
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Not sure what he meant. Maybe the other tags available for SO that could duplicate the content of that proposal. But, I'm no Oracle, so unless he clears it up himself we may never know WTF he meant.
