one hundred rep points on offer in the next 24 hours if you can answer this question

why are people voting up immigration questions?
let me retry that bounty link

Q: Are there any travel experiences in Australia that offer aboriginal (or Torres Strait) “cultural immersion”?

hippietrailI am wondering if it's possible for a traveller in Australia to immerse in aboriginal culture, or Torres Strait Islander culture. By "immerse" I mean stay in a traditional aboriginal area where people speak the language on an everyday basis and generally live to some degree or other in a traditi...

best assumption is that people new to the site are voting up the immigration questions rather than us old regulars

3 hours later…
1:09 PM
still nobody around?

5 hours later…
6:18 PM
I'm just back home now. was hiking the whole day

6:41 PM
how was the hiking?

very nice
but a lot of people
and i didn't expect that it will so hot

it was gorgeous here in southern albania and barely a tourist in sight

nice
every time im more interested in albania ;)

6:56 PM
even the beauty spots here aren't really developed... yet

yes i think it is time to go there.. .maybe in 20 years it will look really different

i think so. this town i'm in will be all "zimmer frei" like in croatia at the very least
there's all those slightly annoying but lovable quirks that countries that haven't woken up to tourism have

yes
I was surprised how fast Croatia recovered form the war

well i haven't been there for three years but at that stage there were two croatias: "zimmer frei" and "danger, land mines" - we were the only tourists in the latter
dammit now i have to go find a photo!
and why not a free bonus gift...
our satnav didn't believe we were on such a road

7:15 PM
yeah ok thats true
i was mainly at the coast and in zagreb
i imagine that in upcountry it is really different

we did the coast down to pula and dubrovnik and some inland roads and ugly cities too but didn't make it to zagreb
we totally loved ljubljana by the way
hey was the vodka question our most popular ever so far?

yes ljubljana is nice too ;) we drove trough it on the way home
hmm i don't know how to check it,
but it seems very popular atm.... 10 views or something like this per minute

i shall be in this position soon enough again in the caucasus

Possibly.. I guess somebody prominent tweeted about it
@hippietrail: Ahh, Georgian toasts.. not to be missed

in georgia the trick is drink the vodka because it's usually good quality but diligently watch out for the inevitable transition to chacha

7:22 PM
yes I think it has to be linked somewhere

i would like to ask a question about georgian toasts but don't want to stray too far off topic

Not sure you'd find an authority on the site, but might just get lucky
'sides, two drinking questions for one weekend are probably too much

a good question is a good question whether or not it finds a good answer quickly
hmm one per day of weekend though (-;
i did pose a sample question on the culture proposal about drinking in georgia but it wasn't anything special

btw I checked the site stats on area51, and we're not doing so well in terms of visits/day

maybe we need more drinking questions to fix that!

7:25 PM
Then we'll have to change the topic of the site
drinkntravel.stackexchange.com

wouldn't bee too hard with duty free and customs and liquids on planes not to mention alcohol availability in muslim countries

yeah, but doesn't really create a good first impression for new visitors.. then again, if they are brought by that sort of questions, I guess it's fine
btw you are totally right about German airports.. I've been to 5-6, and free wifi was nowhere to be found
one more reason to avoid Lufthansa

yes I think we should have if possible some really popular questions that attract people in the first place... but it's not easy to find such questions

its a bit funny but you know we could well give our community themed challenges to come up with good questiions

maybe this would be useful to attract people
but im really surprised that there is no wifi in german airports

7:29 PM
i was in frankfurt airport twice last year and honestly can't remember. i've always looked on free airport wifi as a bonus rather than something to be expected

Frankfurt definitely doesn't have it -- been there one month ago

the same friend was also annoyed about the lack of water fountains in munich airport which surprised me more but i couldn't see the potential in that for as good a question

I don't see a problem with water fountains, if the water in the bathrooms is drinkable

we could have a game to ask the best drinking related question each weekend to stimulate weekend traffic
me either but i understand that some spoiled rich people do d-;

yeah, best to ask in Thursday evening to prepare for the upcoming weekend

7:32 PM
in germany you can drink the water from every tap :D
yes

every tap? no recycled water used in public gardens or anything?? no bore water?

in public gardens, fountains etc. they probably have a closed water cycle

hmm
don't know

the next most views i can see so far is 477

but in public gardens i drink the water in germany
i drink the water every time when not signed to no drink it

7:36 PM
only some public parks and gardens in australia use recycled water but it's more and more common since we have water shortages every summer

another good thing is, based on the upvotes and the views I think, the question is now on the SE main site

even if you're not thirsty? d-;

;)

Yeah, I saw it on the Superdropdown-colider something-or-other (the dropdown menu in the top left)

yes

7:39 PM
I check these twice per day, there are often fascinating questions from other sites

really interesting stuff
so i have to go to pick up my girlfriend at the station
have fun and cya

aha Can I use USD in Canada? gets 559 views
girlfriends often seem to fall over at stations d-;

omg :D

It's bad form to pick on unsuspecting non-native speakers :)
buuut.. it's all good, mate
:)
seriously do aussies really talk like that?

7:49 PM
i try to throw in lots of extra smileys and winkys that you wouldn't get from me in real life
i dunno since i've spent so little time with typical aussies over the last decade
the pick up one is a family joke my dad once made when my sister rang to get picked up "what you've fallen over again?"

haha
hmm, I should probably ask about a question about moose safari in Sweden on the site, maybe somebody will know
(I've been in Sweden for some years now, and haven't been on one of these)

why don't we just talk about travel difficulties in the countries we know best and suddenly we'll provoke good question ideas out of each other?
my sweden story is that unlike other countries rich and poor in which i've travelled, swedish long distance bus drivers do not do at least a head count before departing from rest stops

ahh, I see where this is going

actually maybe that is a good question. was that typical for the country or was i the unlucky exception?
ok i'm gonna ask it

pretty typical.. they only check for tickets on the stations where people are supposed to get on or off.. but never on stops for break
and they'd never count the people on board on those
I think it should be pretty easy to sneak in, but never tried it, or heard anyone do it

7:57 PM
i think it will be a useful question for people generally so i'm going to ask on the site and you may answer there if you wish
ha i never thought of that either!

don't do it, seriously.. they are very strict about the rules, and if you get caught without a ticket, the fees are astronomical
for example, riding without ticket in the public transport in a city will set you back 50+ EUR if caught.. they don't check all that often, but when they do, you better have a ticket!
same is for long-distance travel

i can hear small creatures fighting or hunting each other in the ceiling of the next room

oh, most rats are harmless, unless confronted or cornered
just shoot on sight and you'll be fine

i only ever did it once in australia (encouraged by a pretty girl) and got caught immediately. the fine was about $100 and i was unemployed at the time
i was going to use one of these local albanian grenades i picked up at the market

oh cool! is it live?
heyy.. a question.. is it going to be a problem if you carry ammunition-like and explosive-like items (such as grenades) through airport security
will ask later

Q: Is it normal for Swedish long-distance bus/coach drivers not to count for missing passengers after rest stops?

hippietrailBack in 2001 or 2002 I was travelling by coach in Sweden because it was cheaper than the train. There was a break for lunch and I believe it was 15 minutes. I didn't have a watch and didn't spot a clock in the rest stop which was so enormous that the other passengers dispersed and I couldn't tra...

Let me at it

get some nice juicy references or quotes!
now i need to think of a bulgaria question

Shoot.. btw your question about the socialist art museum.. I spent at least 15 minutestrying to find the exact address!

i spent much longer than that and failed. i'm still bummed out that i missed it after all that effort

I found some high-def photos from there, do you want me to dig the link?

8:11 PM
only if it's not too much trouble

ah socialist art museum
i have another question about moscow :D
i couldn't find the kgb museum

yeah, after I answer your question :)

and if somebody has a question about liechtenstein, here I am ;)

i wish i could ask travelshopping questions. i have one for greece but the SE people have selective blindness and never see the travel side of such questions and insist they are pure shopping questions
hmm stayed in a gaestehaus saw the castle rollerbladed the river bought a passport stamp at the tourist office walked around a lot caught a bus back from austria what else is there?
figured out what (FL) means on cars... saw lots of dentists i think... maybe some banks
oh what did you guys think of the two immigration-ish questions i brought up, and the immigration tag i used on them?

yes you can hike their and their are a lot of signed mountainbike trails. in the winter you can go skiing. the castle is from prince but you can visit it from inside
hmm but I don't really now a good question... there are 24 banks

Q: Is it possible to stay in Costa Rica for one year on a tourist visa?

AtlasRNMy significant other and I are looking to spend next year in Costa Rica. His company is going to relocate us there so he can work full time. I was hoping that someone might know what kind of requirements there are for the visas. We are from the United States. We wouldn't mind living on a to...

you can visit inside? i assumed i couldn't

can't
sry

wow that's a great link thanks

oh man.. the infamous vodka question still has some potential.. reputation continues to trickle in
should we have both and ?

since most of us can't just instantly make synonyms they have to be normal tags and then proposed as synonyms and then voted

8:23 PM
good point, never thought of that
btw are moderators active in chat? haven't seen them around

so i've been doing this a bit on travel and linguistics. here diamonds can do it if they're around but ling doesn't have diamonds yet
dori used to be here a lot and a couple of others sometimes but they've mostly stepped back to babysit new betas now that we have the pro tems

I could have shared some more Swedish travelling tips, but they are kind of cheating, and I wouldn't want to give people ideas

Q: Best inside tip for Liechtenstein?

hippietrailBeing from a big country like Australia I'm fascinated with tiny countries. Most people wouldn't visit Liechtenstein while touring Europe since it doesn't have any of the spots Europe is most famous for, but I would specifically go there. If I only do one thing in Liechtenstein to make the most...

don't think of it as a game where we score points, think of it as building the site so more people will find useful questions and useful answers via internet searches and then stay around to contribute to it

8:39 PM
this question is a little bit too broad (wink)..

but yeah don't put too many travel tips in as asides
hehe with such a tiny country i think such a question isn't broad like for a big country

exactly my point :)
I was thinking more of my personal experiences how can you get by not paying for full tickets and such (it wasn't planned, but just happened that way and it occurred to me it can be misused).

in italy i had the opposite problem
how can i make sure i pay for my ticket

how so?
they don't want your money?
how's a female moose called?
moose cow?

ma'am

8:54 PM
(sigh)

good question for english.se if you've never used it before

I did, actually.. asked a few questions there, but I'm not very active

doe doesn't sound right like it is for a deer so i would expect cow
i have my answer for the FL question but won't add it until some other answers come in first

FL question?
yeah, seems it's a moose cow

Q: I'd like to go to a moose safari in Sweden! What are my options?

mindcorrosiveI've been to Sweden for some time now, but never had a chance to go to a moose safari so far. To clear up any confusion, this is the kind of trip where you walk around through the forest, enjoy the fresh air and shoot moose with your camera. Here's one specimen, in all its glory Some requiremen...

I wonder whether hunting questions are on-topic

let me copyedit for you

9:02 PM
knock yourself out :)

i don't know why but this made me think of an old question i never found the answer to

thanks for the edits.. I always seem to make the same mistakes

you don't want to see how bad my romanian is (it's much better than my bulgarian though)

Well, in Bulgaria you only need to be able to say "Здравей", "Благодаря", "Моля", "Довиждане", "Голяма ракия и шопска", and some of the most common swear words, and you'd get by fine :-)

Q: Is it possible to tour the facility where Kahlúa is made?

hippietrailNow I know you can visit plenty of wineries, breweries, and distilleries around the world. But my favourite alcoholic beverage is Kahlúa, a coffee liqueur from Mexico exported around the world. Does anybody know if it's possible for any random person, or also only under some special circumstance...

actually i wanted to know how to order gyuvech
the meals cooked in the clay pot with egg and melted cheese and i don't know what... yummmm
shopksa was also good but it could vary so much

9:18 PM
hmm, the gyuvech is not this, you are talking about gyuveche (гювече) which means "small guyvech", and is different.. the pot itself is called that

yes i thought it was really the name of the pot but we never met people in restaurants whose english was of a high enough level to figure out the subtleties

yeah, this is my favourite as well, but it requires the special pot which is hard to come by in Scandinavia (IKEA, for one, doesn't have them, for some reason)
would "food-recommendation" be on topic here? Example question: "I'm travelling to region X, what I shouldn't miss to try from the local cuisine? I eat Y and Z, but I'm allergic to W."

can't you get some family to send you the pot surely?
well i once had a recommendation tag and the SE staff nuked it without telling me why so it's probably not a great idea

good to know

i think it might be on-topic on cooking.SE though - why not ask as a meta question on each site?
i think there are ways to ask national dish type questions though as long as you can be sure to be objective and specific
in fact i had trouble finding the supposedly available everywhere national dish in macedonia and here in albania too

9:28 PM
which one is that?

in macedonia it was tavche-gravche and here it's tavë kosi
i'm gonna ask the latter one since i badly want to try it

ah, I think we have this in Bulgaria, it's called Боб по манастирски (Beans monastery style)
Mind if I use your example for my meta question?

9:44 PM

Q: What kinds of places should I go to eat the national dish in Albania, tavë kosi?

hippietrailI'm currently travelling in the Balkans and have previously had surprising difficulty finding the national dish in some countries. Here in Albania the national dish is tavë kosi, baked lamb and rice with yoghurt sauce, which to me sounds divine. But so far in Shkodër, Tiranë, Durrës, and Berat ...

no problemo

ahh, but this is not what I was thinking of.. but we still have it :)
you are right it's most likely seasonal.. lamb is usually available only in the spring, around May
0
Q: Are food availability questions on-topic on Travel-SE?

mindcorrosiveI am kind of a food appreciator and amateur cook, so I always look forward to try samples of local cuisine everywhere I go. Sometimes, though, finding where a particular dish is served is not very easy, especially if it is localized to a certain region or not usually sought after by tourists. So...

probably not the best title but I'm too tired anyway

10:06 PM
ah i didn't think of that
and no don't think i was saying that any two of gyuvech, tavche-graveche, or tave kosi were supposed to be similar at all
titles can be rougher on meta than on the main sites

doesn't matter, maybe I misunderstood it

i think this kind of gormet traveller is on topic but also on topic would be finding cooking courses for national cuisines. this is particularly popular in thailand
i'm surprised we don't have a tag already

hmm, that's an interesting idea -- finding courses and training for local crafts

this old question would work with that tag but not with say which might by a synonym sometimes

Q: Diving safety in Australia

rshimodaI'm going to Australia next October and I was wondering if it is safe to go diving (near Cairns) even though it will be my first time doing so. Should I take a course locally before the trip? Thanks!

Hey, Mark Mayo knows where they make this stuff

10:17 PM
there's one i asked a while back too...

Q: Language schools that teach Mayan languages around Lake Atlitlan, Guatemala?

hippietrailI've been to Guatemala several times and always spend some time around Lake Atitlan. This is maybe the third most popular place to study Spanish in the country and has many language schools for foreigners, but most of the local people speak one of three Mayan languages and Spanish is their second...

which stuff?

your tavë kosi, see his answer on meta

10:36 PM
i'm already south of where he suggested and i took a more westerly route so didn't pass through elbasan
